• Gnome3 pointer barrier not working with dual monitors

  I have a dual monitor setup using Gnome3. Misc Info : In the past I used Fedora, there was a pointer barrier between my two monitors in the upper left corner so that I can hit the hot corner when moving from the right monitor to the left monitor. Problem : However, with my new Ubuntu installation, the barrier no longer exists and my mouse pointer glides straight to the next screen. This makes that hot corner nearly useless. I've looked around, messed with the values in /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/layout.js, but I can't figure out how to make the pointer barrier work. may someone suggest hot to get the full utilization of hot cornet.

• Git bug branching convention

  I've been following the successful Git branching model guide for most of my development. I still wonder if the way I handle bug tickets is correct. My current workflow: Once I accept a bug ticket I will do a git checkout -b bug/{ticket_number}, create a single commit as a fix and then checkout develop and do a git merge --no-ff. I'd love to hear from the experiences of others whether or not I am abusing the --no-ff option in this instance. If I am, could someone suggest a better approach?

  So chrome has just updated itself automatically and you are now running v18 – great. Or is it… If like me, you are someone that are running sites using a self-signed SSL Certificate (i.e. when running a site on a developer machine) you may come across the following lovely message; Fear not, this is likely as a result of you following instructions you found on the apache openssl site which results in a self signed cert using the MD5 signature hashing algorithm. Using OpenSSL The simple fix is to generate a new certificate specifying to use the SHA512 signature hashing algorithm, like so; openssl req -new -x509 -sha512 -nodes -out server.crt -keyout server.key Simples! Now, you should be able to confirm the signature algorithm used is sha512 by looking at the details tab of certificate Notes If you change your certificate, be sure to reapply any private key permissions you require – such as allowing access to the application pool user.

• No root partition

  I'm having serious problems trying to install ubuntu 14.04 on my Toshiba Satellite C850 laptop. Whenever I try to install it it says "No root file system found. Please correct this error from the partitioning menu." I've tried to create new partitions but I don't know what size to make them etc. can someone please help me on this? (Is there a way to create partitions through the terminal? I'm new to ubuntu) but i was on it 2 days ago, laptops crashed and now I can't get past the installation. I've created a new partitioning table just need guidance on which partitions to create and how big to make them. I have absolutely no partitions whatsoever on my hard drive (or whatever the partitions are part of) so it will need to be from the very start. Thanks in advance!

• How was collision detection handled in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past?

  I would like to know how the collision detection was done in The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. The game is 16x16 tile based, so how did they do the tiles where only a quarter or half of the tile is occupied? Did they use a smaller grid for collision detection like 8x8 tiles, so four of them make one 16x16 tile of the texture grid? But then, they also have true half tiles which are diagonally cut and the corners of the tiles seem to be round or something. If Link walks into tiles corner he can keep on walking and automatically moves around it's corner. How is that done? I hope someone can help me out here.

  Hello. I'd like to build a web service similar to kickstarter that allows users to pledge money to an idea, tho I'm unsure how I can implement this kind of payment system. If the the idea receives a specified amount of money, then the donors are charged. If it doesn't, the donors are not charged. I've done some preliminary research and have found Amazon Payments to be a possible solution provider for this, but I'm still unsure where to start with this and was hoping someone could point me in some right directions for how I can go about implementing this kind of payment structure in my web site. I should also note that this is primarily a prototype I'm building, so it's ok if the solution is limited to U.S. customers only. Also, I plan to build the site using Ruby on Rails. • Can 302 redirect on wordpress homepage affect SEO?

  I manage a website. In order to lead the visitor to the latest post when entering the website, I set a 302 redirect from the homepage URL to the latest post URL. There's 1 to 2 posts a month so the redirection is made manually each time a new post gets published. Despite the website registration on google it doesn't get indexed at all. After searching for some solution on blogs and forums I understood this issue might be related to the 302 redirection. It's the first time I use redirections on a website, can someone help me?

• Creating my own kill cam

  I plan on creating my own kill cam system for a sandbox tool set. After thinking about the mechanics of the kill cam itself, however, I'm quite lost. I'm trying to recreate the ones commonly seen in call of duty games that show, from the view of the killer, the actual killing scene. My Thoughts: -I can't just keep in memory when people kill others because I wouldn't know when to start the 'recording process'. There is on way for me to accurately determine when somebody is 'about' to kill someone. -My only real idea so far is to have a complete duplicate of everything loaded off to the side copying all the movement from the original world but with a 10 second delay. That way, all the kill cams would be 10 seconds long and the persons camera would just be moved to the second world of their killer. My Questions: Is there already an accepted way to do this? Does anybody have any good ideas for something like this? Thanks if you can!

  Is there commercial-grade computer animation software available for Ubuntu, similar to the professional software sold for the Windows operating system? This question goes out to those of you who may be using such software professionally. My daughter recently graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, and needs to put together an animation portfolio in order to interest employers in the field. As you know, such software is usually provided by the employer and the costs are high - several thousand dollars. I suggested that she investigate Ubuntu as a possible way to acquire the tools she needs. But, since I have no idea what might be available, either as open source or proprietary animation software, I am reaching out to the Ubuntu community for help in the hope someone who is using such software can help her. • Changes to 'resolveconf' discarded when connecting to a new network

  I have upgraded to 12.10 from 12.04 recently and I am having issues with connecting to the Internet. I got an IP address and am able to ping other LAN IPs in the local network but I am unable to connect to the Internet and am even unable to ping www.google.com from a terminal. Somehow making changes in /etc/resolv.conf and restarting resolvconf service and rebooting works but I need to do this every time I connect to a new network. How do I make these changes permanent? Can someone suggest a solution to this issue?

• Usefulness of the Backlinks shown in Webmaster Tools

  Is the list of links for a site shown in Google Webmaster Tools a complete list or just a sample? I've noticed that the links in there appear to be all the ones I didn't think would have any real value - either because they were nofollow or from irrelivant sites. The few I did think would be some use have never shown up and there's also some links that are sometimes there and sometimes not (such as my linkedIn profile). Does this mean that the missing links don't/no longer carry any value? It almost appears that the list is there for Google to either inform you about problems (there was a useful list there when someone tried to SPAM my site) or mis-imform you about which link-building strategies work or not (to keep people guessing about what works or not).

  I've recently learned how to make games for Unity3d, and now I want to start making games! I can't wait to start! However, before I can make 3D games, I need to learn 3D modeling for character design, level design, and some animation. What is the easiest 3D modeling software, compatible with Unity3d? I do not want to spend too much time learning the software. From what I've heard, Blender is a bit complicated to use. Maya and 3dsMax seem very powerful. Could someone point me in the right direction? I don't want to spend a lot of time learning. • Java plugin is not working on some sites

  I have icedtea6-plugin installed on my Ubuntu box. The weird thing is, when I am browsing the internet, certain website are able to use the Java and some websites are not. For instance, I am able to log in to my bank at nordea.dk. They use a Java applet to authenticate the user. But when I try to use keepvid.com, it says "Loading Java Applet". And then after a minute or two it says "Error: Please click here to download Java. If you already have Java, please restart your browser and try again." The thing is I've restarted my computer, closed and opened my browser(chromium) and none of it seems to help. Could someone please point me in the right direction to solve this problem? Thanks.

• Has anyone used Sproutcore?

  Has anyone used Sproutcore for a web application? If so, can you give me a description of your experience? I am currently considering it, but I have a few concerns. First, the documentation is bad/incomplete, and I'm afraid that I'll spend lots of time figuring things out or digging through source code. Also, I'm a bit hesitant to use a project that is relatively new and could undergo significant changes. Any thoughts from people who have developed in Sproutcore are appreciated! EDIT/PS: Yes, I've seen this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/370598/sproutcore-and-cappuccino . However I'm interested in a bit lengthier description of Sproutcore itself from someone who's used it for a significant project.

  I'd like to create a web wizard or a wizard on/within a website. I know there are several java frameworks for wizards but there is none for the web in particular. If I search for a framework, I always get wizards to create a website, applet, servlet and what not. But never how to create such a wizard itself. So the question(s) is: What framework should I use to create a web wizard? And what frameworks are there? The wizard will be the visualisation for a BPEL Process deployment on a apache ode. I thought a webapp would be an easy way because the apache is running anyway. I'm not bound to that, perhaps someone has a better idea.

• URL Rewrite http to https EXCEPT files in a specific subfolder

  I am trying to force all traffic on my web site to use HTTPS, using the URL Rewrite 2.0 module added to IIS 7.5. I got that working and now have a need to exclude a couple of pages from using SSL. So I need a rule to rewrite all URL except those referencing this folder to HTTPS. I've been banging my head against the wall on this and am hoping someone can help. I tried creating a rule to match all URL except those in a nossl subfolder as in this example: <rule name="HTTP to HTTPS redirect" enabled="true" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="(/nossl/.*)" negate="true" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll" trackAllCaptures="false"> <add input="{HTTPS}" pattern="off" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" url="https://{HTTP_HOST}/{R:1}" redirectType="Found" /> </rule> But this doesn't work. • Is it unwise to blacklist an IP address?

  We have a form on a commercial website which has been abused (but only once or twice) by someone from a particular IP address. A colleague wants to blacklist that IP address from the website. Seems to me that's overkill, and that there's a risk that genuine customers sharing that same IP address would be blacklisted too. I suppose a big part of my question is how many people might be sharing that same IP address and could be affected by our blacklist. I suspect that's a "how long's a piece of string" question but some ballpark answer would be really helpful. We're in the UK if that's significant.

( the two PCs are connected with an Ethernet cable ) I've already searched for a solution, but all i found was the use of some softwares that should have been already installed on the "Internet-less PC". ( Keryx, APTonCD ... ) What I want to do is to create a mirror in my laptop which contain the packages i have in this one ( situated in /var/cache/apt/archive ) and i don't want to download all the packages from the official repository, I don't need them. • First time using Ubuntu, need help with drivers!

  I have just successfully built my first computer last night. I went through the boot menu and got Ubuntu 12.10 installed properly and everything. My question is...now what? There has to be some sort of drivers I need to install right? I can't connect to wi-fi or anything of that sort. I have an ASUS motherboard, model number M4N98TD EVO , and an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 650 grpahics card. • Is "PHP and MySQL Web Development, 4th ed." an outdated book to learn from?

  I want to get into web stuff, and thought of going with PHP+MySQL. I have experience in C#, C++, desktop graphics, but no web stuff besides HTML, CSS which I started learning 2 months ago. On SO PHP-book question, the highest rated book is "PHP Objects, Patterns and Practice". However, I'm not sure if it's a book to start PHP with... or is it? Most of the books mentioned in that SO question seem to be for those who already know PHP. I considered "PHP & MySQL Web Development, 4th Ed.", but someone mentioned that "it uses the mysql_* functions which are almost deprecated." Help?

• Separate urls for a set of pages sharing 80% duplicate content

  Issue: Currently my site has one particular page which has country specific data. So I've URLs like : mysite.com/sale-united-states mysite.com/sale-united-kingdom mysite.com/sale-sweden etc. All these pages have 80-90% common content and 10-20% country specific content. currently all these pages canonically point to mysite.com/sale-united-states. The problem is when someone searches for "sale Sweden", Google correctly shows mysite.com/sale-united-states page, which does not feel correct as it shows US page instead of Sweden. Now I'm thinking of not using canonical url so that country specific urls are produced in Google saerch. But I'm not sure how 80% duplicate content is going to affect SEO? What should be the recommended approach for this situation? A friend of mine suggested a "separate subdomain per country" based approach but it seems overkill for one page.
