• How should I pronounce the :: and -> in PHP?

  When I read these lines aloud to someone: $controller->process(); UserManager::getInstance(); How should the -> and :: be pronounced? Reading the characters themselves in cumbersome and I don't know of any nicknames for them. Being a developer who is used to C-style syntax, I'd like to say "dot", but I'd like something that is easy to say and people can easily understand. It would also be good to know if there are any pronunciations that have become de-facto standards among teams of developers.

• Java-Powered Robot Named NAO Wows Crowds

  He drew a crowd where he went at JavaOne. And only being 22.5 inches/573 mm tall, that's pretty impressive. Nao (pronounced now) is an autonomous, programmable humanoid robot developed by Aldebaran Robotics, a French robotics company. Over 200 academic institutions worldwide have made use of the robot.   I am a beginning to enter the world of game development. Lately, I researched that "OPENGL" is one of the tools to use in graphics, then I found out about "SFML" (I think that its a library or something that uses opengl). I am so confuse because all books/ sites said using "GLUT", but many people/fellow developers said that I must use a more updated one like "SFML" but sfml has few/none tutorials. What I am trying to say is "how to create own library or something like your own glut or sfml", and why does opengl has no source code? And how can I use the EXACT(not glut/sfml) opengl in my c++ program? I am so confuse....

• Service to test app on all the iPhones?

  I have some developers creating an iPhone app, often the app will not work on one type of iPhone even though it worked on another one using the same version of iOS. Therefore, I am looking for a service where I can test the app natively on all the iPhone versions running various versions of iOS. I would like to be able to interact with the iPhones myself, so that I know that a specific bug has actually been fixed before, pushing to App Store and waiting 9 days for the review before I can hear the sad news from customers. Googling got me nowhere. Do such services exist?

• Options for Opensource license?

  I am choosing a license for my open source software and I've learned about GPL, EBMS and BSD. GPL seems to be most popular one. The problems are: Would anybody kindly name a few popular opensource licenses? Since I do not see any EBMS BSD license is popular. Are there any chart or table that have list out the advantages/disadvantages of using anyone? Why is the GPL always the license developers choose from, what are its benefits? Thank you.

• Which social sign-in (Google, twitter, fb, etc) is most often used (if I could only choose one, which would statistically retain the most users)?

  I am working with a startup which is about to do it's launch in maybe 2-3 weeks. In order to see the primary features of the site, the user has to register or sign in if they have already registered. We quickly decided we wanted to incorporate social plugins as alternatives to a conventional sign up, just like stackexchange does. But seeing that we are strapped for time and fairly amateur developers, I'm trying to justify just choosing one or two social sign-ins to start with for the launch and then maybe add more later. Based on my experience as a user, I'm guessing that twitter and google (in no particular order of importance) would probably be the most important social sign-ins in order to retain as many users as possible, but have absolutely no statistics to back that up other than my own anecdotal experience. This question hasn't been visibly asked on the internet, so I figured I'd hop on stackexchange and give it a punt. Thanks.

• What do you do when one thinks the code isn't complicated enough?

  After six months of development on a project, our stakeholders have had a "gut check" and have decided that the path that we've been walking (a custom designed application framework and data access layer) is holding us (the developers) back from quickly developing the features they would like to see. After several days of debate management and the development team have decided to scrap the current incarnation and start over using ASP.net MVC, with Entity Framework as the bases of the a 'quick and dirty', lets just get it done project. In days following, our senior developer who has never worked with MVC or Entity Framework has finally gotten into a sample project and done some work. His take on ASP.net MVC, "this is not software engineering". So my question is this; what do you do, when one doesn't think the code is complicated enough?

  Microsoft launched a website dedicated to the demise of IE6.  Here's their pitch...10 years ago a browser was born.  Its name was Internet Explorer 6. Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye. We'll watch Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide, so more websites can choose to drop support for Internet Explorer 6, saving hours of work for web developers.  Thanks Microsoft!  We've been waiting for this day to come for a long time.  Of course, it would have been nice if IE6 was gone 5 years ago...but who's counting.

• What do you think about gems and eggs? Alternatives?

  I've read recently some criticism (see 1, 2, 3) about the packaging distribution system of two popular programming languages: Ruby gems and Python eggs. The most important argument stated against them is that they replace the system package manager (in case there is one, as in every Linux distribution), which makes eggs and gems difficult to track, code difficult to patch, and so on. Are actually eggs and gems right? In case not, are there any alternatives to distributing Python or Ruby modules? Should developers focus on taking advantage of package manager (apt-get, pacman, ...) capabilities?

• Open Source: Is Testing/Bug Reporting A Major Contribution?

  When evaluating contributions to open source projects, does testing the code on various real-world inputs, reducing a large number of complicated bugs to small test cases and filing good bug reports count as a significant contribution? I've done this for several open-source projects (specifically D compilers) where I wanted to help out but the codebase was too complicated to learn my way around in the amount of spare time I have. I'm interested in both the perspective of the main developers (those that write the code and fix the bugs) and from the perspective of employers (in case I want to put it on my resume at some point).

• As a software architect, am I supposed to focus that much on analysing the logs and fixing other's bugs?

  Since my graduation (late 2005) I was working for the same company as a c++ software engineer. A year ago I was promoted as a software architect but I have found myself involved more and more in qualification and fixing bugs, level 2 support. 50% of my time spent in Notepad++ analysing the software logs and trying to figure out what went wrong. 30% fixing other's bugs and the remaining (if any) reviewing developers spaghetti code. I started hating this product and thinking about an exit strategy out of this company. What do you think I can do in this situation? do you other software architect still fixing bugs in the code?

• Uploading Files Using ASP.NET Web Forms, Generic Handler and jQuery

  In order to upload files from the client machine to the server ASP.NET developers use FileUpload server control. The FileUpload server control essentially renders an INPUT element with its type set to file and allows you to select one or more files. The actual upload operation is performed only when the form is posted to the server. Instead of making a full page postback you can use jQuery to make an Ajax call to the server and POST the selected files to a generic handler (.ashx). The generic handler can then save the files to a specified folder. • How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

  I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. • ASP.NET Tooltips Extender Control

  Tooltips is always a good usability practice to display descripitve and meaningful message on UI, which provide guidance and extra information to users visually. However, I cannot find this kind of handy "control" in the latest version (40412) of the AJAX control toolkit. (Feature request?)
