• How do I open a hardware accelarated DirectX window on a secondary screen

  I'm looking to create a hardware accelarated DirectX (9 at the moment) window on a secondary screen. This screen is connected to the same graphics display as the primary screen (at least at the moment). Currently, when I try to open the window on the secondary screen based on window position or by dragging it there, CPU usage jumps by about 10%, which seems to indicate that windows is switching to a software fallback rather than the hardware accelaration. Machine is windows XP running a NVIDIA graphics card (varying cards as this runs on several machines), with the latest driver. It's also running CUDA at the same time to produce the images if that matters. Programming language is c++, manual window and message queue creation, no tookbox used at the moment to manage the GUI Thanks

  I'm running a database-heavy Java application on a cluster, using Connector/J 5.1.14. Therefore, I have up to 150 concurrent tasks accessing the same MySQL database. I get the following error: Exception in thread "main" com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: Too many connections This happens because the server can't handle so many connections. I can't change anything on the database server. So my question is: Can I check if a connection is possible BEFORE I actually connect to the database? Something like this (pseudo code): check database for open connection slots if (slot is free) { Connection cn = DriverManager.getConnection(url, username, password); } else { wait ... } Cheers

  I'm using the Colorbox module in Drupal 7. I'm opening an external website. I can make it work with a link. Click here, then click the "colorbox popup" link at the bottom, middle column. The client would like this to open automatically when the page opens. I do have a .java file already and would like to add a few lines of code to a method inside it. So, I would like the API to modify the java file directly/ create a modified copy of it.   i've seem this post about extracting a zip without a temporary file via stream and pipes: Open a file from archive without temporary extraction The problem is that i'm using php and have no idea if that is possible. I've search a lot with no luck. My idea is to preview zip files from the dropbox using its API but i dont want to save the files to a local drive, just preview the content. Any idea if that's possible with php? Almost everything i found is about creating the file, not reading it... :-\ I was thinking that i might try with nodejs, but i know mostly nothing about nodejs, do you think it would support it? • Solution for distributing MANY simple network tasks?

  I would like to create some sort of a distributed setup for running a ton of small/simple REST web queries in a production environment. For each 5-10 related queries which are executed from a node, I will generate a very small amount of derived data, which will need to be stored in a standard relational database (such as PostgreSQL). What platforms are built for this type of problem set? The nature, data sizes, and quantities seem to contradict the mindset of Hadoop. There are also more grid based architectures such as Condor and Sun Grid Engine, which I have seen mentioned. I'm not sure if these platforms have any recovery from errors though (checking if a job succeeds). What I would really like is a FIFO type queue that I could add jobs to, with the end result of my database getting updated. Any suggestions on the best tool for the job?

  I'm using Jumi to echo php code and then showing that in a Joomla Article, and everythings working fine. Now I want to do this: The output is basically a list from a database like this: Name Price Type A 1 T1 B 2 T2 In this list I want to include links to only show items of the same type, so "T1" would like to a page only showing things of type T1. So I thought I would do this by making a new page that takes a type and then get all the items of that type from the database. Without Joomla this wouldv'e been a piece of cake, with Joomla I'm not quite sure where to begin. How should the a href=... tags in the html code printed by my php script look? Is my basic structure still correct, and if so, how do I make Joomla open the new page in the normal frame and not replace the whole Joomla page. some kind of target-frame attribute?

  there are plenty of frameworks for coding MVC web applications. this time im going to code a library (think of Doctrine or Solr) with a bunch of class files. u just include a bootstrap or a class file and you are ready to use my classes. i have never tried to code a library before and intend to code one for learning purpose so that i can use various design patterns i have learned. are there any great frameworks for this, how i should organize the different class files, where i can put configuration files and so on? tutorials or other information would be great too. thanks

• Using GitHub with another Bug-tracker?

  I am involved in this project, Pinta, and we are currently using GitHub for our development. We all love Git and GitHub and want to keep using it. However, now the project is getting stable and involved, and it's time we started using a more capable bug tracking system than GitHub's simple issue tracker. We also want to start doing GetText based translations. We are looking at Launchpad which has both a nice bug tracker and translation manager, but we want to keep using GitHub for development. I'm worried that these will not integrate well, and it will make development harder. Has anyone used GitHub with another bug tracking system and had any success? Any recommendations?

• How do i open Google Maps for directions using coordinates on the iphone

  I am using UIMapView to display locations on the iPhone. I want to do a directions from current location to the location of interest, I don't think its possible using MapKit (but if it is please inform) So I will open either the Google Maps application or safari to display it. Can i do this by specifying co-ordinates from (current location) to co-ordinates (the location of interest) I have these longitudes and latitudes. Or do i have to use street addresses? If I do have to use street addresses, can i get them from the latitude and longitude.

• how to animate a menu item into a large div (window) using jquery's animate?

  i'm pretty sure this can be done pretty easily with jquery's animate api, but i'm not good enough to figure it out. what i want to do is this: i have a menu item at the top of the viewport that the user will click on. when the user clicks on it, you'll see something that looks like the div "popping" out of the menu and float to a particular location on the screen. when i say popping i don't mean anything fancy - i just mean it appears to be originating from the menu item and settling somewhere on the screen that i specify. but the important part is that this animation happens really fast. fast enough where you don't have to actually wait for the window to appear, but slow enough so the eye sees the animation start from the menu item and end up at a new location where the window will actually appear, and appear with a specify height and width. hope that all made sense?

When cloning the main repository one gets a complete build environment with all the libraries and all the tools needed to make an official installer file, with correct version numbers. I like the fact that anyone who wants to contribute can clone the repository and get started with anything they want. But I'm thinking this makes it to easy for Evil People to create malicious installers and release into the wild. How should it be structured?   Hi, Does anyone know of a C-based open source class / framework which can generate a random jigsaw puzzle from an image or generate a random puzzle template which could then be applied to an image? The puzzle pieces must have male and female notches/holes. There should be more than one template so that the puzzle does not become too easy. The target system is iOS / Mac. If not, how would you approach this problem? The puzzle pieces should be as close to a real jigsaw piece shape as possible and the system must be dynamic so that the user can use their own photos or download photos. thanks!

• How do you handle multiple (overlapping) projects in trac?

  We are using trac and are really satisfied with it. However, out of the box, trac is best suited for single-project environments only. I'd be interested to hear about the various approaches people take to make it work with multiple projects nevertheless and their experiences with them. Are there any plugins to recommend? Any patches, tweaks or whatnots? Are you maybe even using an entirely different bug-tracking system that offers all of trac's functionality plus multi-project support? We recently started managing a second project ourselves which generally works okay but also has some drawbacks, especially where the two projects overlap because of common library code we wrote that is used in both projects. How do you handle this? (I'll attach our own current approach as an answer to this post.)

  Windows 7 allows you to select multiple files to open at once by using ctrl or shift key. The "File Name" input field at the bottom of the dialog box would auto populate with the following sample: "aaa.txt" "bbb.txt" "ccc.txt" "ddd.txt" I have 14,000 files in a folder and I only need a range of files (approx 500). When I use the shift key to select a range of files, the "File Name" field auto populates all 500 file names. Windows would cut me off at the 260th character when I try to paste in a pre-generated string into the "File Name" field. Is there a way to bypass the 260 character limit so it would accept my entire string with 500 file names?

  Hi I'm learning scheme and was wondering if there are any active open-source projects I might be able to get involved in? I'm nearing the end of SICP and although this has good complex examples no textbook code compares to real-world applications. eg testing code / benchmarking / revision control styles / sheer size and scope etc. Hence my curiousity at seeing a project in the wild. I tried searching google code but only found projects that are interpreters that implement RSR5/6. Perhaps there are not many projects out there and I should consider scala?! Advice or even pointers to specific projects appreciated.

  I'm running a Postgresql query and getting the following error: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid (PGError: ERROR: could not open segment 1 of relation base/20983/24161 (target block 5046584): No such file or directory The query is of the format 'SELECT "locations".* FROM "locations" WHERE ("locations"."id" IN (115990, 78330, 77891, 78248, ...)' with about 600 ids in the IN clause - not an optimal query I know but it's what I have to work with for the moment! The server is running PostgreSQL 8.4.6 on x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, compiled by GCC gcc-4.4.real (Ubuntu 4.4.1-4ubuntu9) 4.4.1, 64-bit. Postgis 1.5 is also installed, and the locations table contains a geometry column. Anyone have any idea what could be causing the error? Thanks!

  I'm writing lots and lots of data that will not be read again for weeks - as my program runs the amount of free memory on the machine (displayed with 'free' or 'top') drops very quickly, the amount of memory my app uses does not increase - neither does the amount of memory used by other processes. This leads me to believe the memory is being consumed by the filesystems cache - since I do not intend to read this data for a long time I'm hoping to bypass the systems buffers, such that my data is written directly to disk. I dont have dreams of improving perf or being a super ninja, my hope is to give a hint to the filesystem that I'm not going to be coming back for this memory any time soon, so dont spend time optimizing for those cases. On Windows I've faced similar problems and fixed the problem using FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING|FILE_FLAG_WRITE_THROUGH - the machines memory was not consumed by my app and the machine was more usable in general. I'm hoping to duplicate the improvements I've seen but on Linux. On Windows there is the restriction of writing in sector sized pieces, I'm happy with this restriction for the amount of gain I've measured. is there a similar way to do this in Linux?

  Hello everyone, I need to develop an instant messenger (like MSN Messagner, but only simple and basic function is fine), based on .Net (C#). I want to integrate the instant messenger with my current web site user. I want to know any open source (better C#) instant messenger to reference? BTW: some of the users are using internal IP address (behind a gateway or proxy, like 10.10.xxx.xxx) -- so in this scenario two users can not use point to point message transfer if both of them are behind a gateway?
