• Evenly distribute items on the screen

  I am trying to solve this little puzzle (the algorithm): I have N image icons and I want to distribute them evenly on users screen. Say, I put them in a table. If there is one image, there will be one cell in a table. If two - one row with two columns, if three - one row and three columns, if four - two rows, two columns... and so on until row space is gone and since then the table should only grow in columns without adding extra rows. I'm trying to figure an algorithm for this and perhaps this is something that has a solution already somewhere? My attempt is so far something like this: obtain_max_rows() obtain_visible_columns() if (number_of_pictures > max_rows*max_columns) { columns = roundup(number_of_pictures/max_rows) for(max_rows){generate row;for columns{generate column}} } else { **here comes to trouble...** } This logic is bit silly though - it somehow needs to think cases where there are 12 pictures on first screen and 2 on the other trying to balance it say 8/6 or somehow like that.

  Generally don't do OO-programming in Python. This project requires it and am running into a bit of trouble. Here's my scratch code for attempting to figure out where it went wrong: class trial(object): def output( func, x ): def ya( self, y ): return func( self, x ) + y return ya def f1( func ): return output( func, 1 ) @f1 def sum1( self, x ): return x which doesn't compile. I've attempted to add the @staticmethod tag to the "output" and "f1" functions but to no avail. Normally I'd do this def output( func, x ): def ya( y ): return func( x ) + y return ya def f1( func ): return output( func, 1 ) @f1 def sum1( x ): return x which does work. So how do I get this going in a class?

  I'm trying to connect to an external Sql Server through PHP 5.2. Using this line: $con = mssql_connect('123.123.123.123','Username','Password') or die('Could not connect to the server!'); I'm receiving this error: Warning: mssql_connect() [function.mssql-connect]: Unable to connect to server: 123.123.123.123 in /home/file/public_html/structure/index.php on line 4 Could not connect to the server! My hosting provider assures me that ports are open for my server to connect to the DB. Looking at my php info, MSSQL Support is enabled, using FreeTDS. Any ideas why this would be failing, or how I can begin trouble shooting the problem?

I am trying to load the animation from inside the constructor of a CursorAdapter, so I can set it later assign it to certain children in the list. I was thinking about the book "Thinking in Java (4th Edition)"....Unfortunately, its deals with Java SE 5 and not the latest version.   I am having a constant trouble with pages not rendering correctly between FF and IE. not my code below. • Mac OS X 10.5+ and POSIX

  Hello, I need to program an authentication module that has to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and at the same time needs to be POSIX-compliant. I read here: developer.apple.com/leopard/overview/osfoundations.html that since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X is POSIX-compliant (to POSIX 1003.1), but working under MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard myself, I can't find any trace of my user name neither in /etc/passwd nor in its successor /etc/master.passwd, which is mentioned here: developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/passwd.5.html Instead it says in both files OpenDirectory Service is used, which should be OpenLDAP according to the OpenDirectoryService man-page. Is this still POSIX-compliant ? I guess not. I wonder how Mac OS X would handle my 100% POSIX-compliant code which depends on /etc/passwd ? • Algorithm for calculating definite integrals with bounds at infinity

  Suppose I have an integral that's bounded on one (or both) end by (-)infinity. AFAICT, I can't analytically solve this problem, it takes brute force (e.g. using a Left Riemann Sum). I'm having trouble generalizing the algorithm so that it sets the proper subdivisions; I'll either do far too much work to calculate something trivial, or not do nearly enough and have huge aliasing errors. Answering in any language is cool, but maybe someone with better google-fu can end this quickly. :) Is what I'm looking for as impossible as trying to measure the British coastline?

  I'm trying to add little icons to my tabs in WPF but having trouble with how to set up the binding. <TabItem.Header> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Image Source="{Binding Source=prop:Resources.eye}" /> <Label VerticalAlignment="Center">Header</Label> </StackPanel> </TabItem.Header> The xmlns:prop is set up for the local project's Properties, I am pulling other values from it elsewhere so I know that the namespace works. The markup above compiles fine BUT I don't see the eye image in the tab. Also, is there any way to set this up into a template? I'm fairly new to XAML/WPF and each tab will have its own image...

• how to translate Haskell into Scalaz?

  One of my high school students and I are going to try to do a port of Haskell's Parsec parser combinator library into Scala. (It has the advantage over Scala's built-in parsing library that you can pass state around fairly easily because all the parsers are monads.) The first hitch I've come across is trying to figure out how Functor works in scalaz. Can someone explain how to convert this Haskell code: data Reply s u a = Ok a !(State s u) ParseError | Error ParseError instance Functor (Reply s u) where fmap f (Ok x s e) = Ok (f x) s e fmap _ (Error e) = Error e -- XXX into Scala (using Scalaz, I assume). I got as far as sealed abstract class Reply[S, U, A] case class Ok[S, U, A](a: A, state: State[S, U], error: ParseError) extends Reply[S, U, A] case class Error[S, U, A](error: ParseError) extends Reply[S, U, A] and know that I should make Reply extend the scalaz.Functor trait, but I can't figure out how to do that.   Thanks for checking out my problem... I'm having trouble submitting a login form via Ajax for a php script to run and return a new set of html items which will be replacing the HTML in #userlinks.... heres what I have so far $("#login_form").submit(function() { return false; }); $('#login_button').click(function(event) { $form = $(this).parent("form"); $.post($form.attr("action"), $form.serialize(), function(data){ $('#userlinks').html(data); }); }); The php script checks for post data of username && password, yet all I'm getting is a page refresh and no changes. Nothing returns unless I turn login_button into a link and change the script a bit... Any help would be appreciated!

  I'm having trouble with Twitter's implementation of an oauth_bridge_code for the @anywhere api. I've seen a few walkthrough's on how to use this functionality but I can't seem to get the request to work for me. I'm using Ruby on Rails with the oauth gem.   I'm having some trouble positioning the Google +1 button on my website. The div is as follows: <div class="g-plusone"></div> The CSS I'm using is pretty simple: .g-plusone { position: absolute; top:95px; left:715px; } I know for a fact that the div in question is being accessed. What's strange is that other social sharing buttons, such as the FB like below follow the same syntax and are positioned perfectly. .fb-like { position: absolute; top:62px; left:715px; } Any ideas?

  We have a class, say LegacyUserSettingsService. LegacyUserSettingsService implements an interface, IUserSettingsService. You can get an instance of the IUserSettingsService by calling our ApplicationServicesFactory. The factory uses Spring.NET to construct the concrete LegacyUserSettingsService. The trouble is that new developers sometimes do their own thing and construct new instances of the LegacyUserSettingsService directly (instead of going via the factory). Is there a way to protect the constructor of the concrete class so it can only be called from the factory? A well-known pattern perhaps? Note that the concrete class resides in a different assembly (separate from the Factory's assembly, so the internal keyword is not a solution). The factory assembly references the other assembly that contains the concrete class. Any ideas?

• Dynamic instant theming a la My Yahoo / iGoogle

  I can think of lots of ways to do this on my own, but I was hoping to find some sort of best practice and have been having trouble finding other's experiences. I want to create easily themed HTML and provide a real-time selector for the user to experiment with themes. I want to do something like the "Change Appearance" tab at http://my.yahoo.com . I'll be using jQuery. jQuery has a "theming" system, but it seems very much focused on jQuery widgets as opposed to the whole site, and also doesn't appear to address the real-time selection aspect (the jQuery page has this functionality, but I don't think it's part of the library.) Maybe there is a jQuery plugin that already does this? Or some sort of css/jQuery framework?

• Appengine (python) returns empty for valid queries

  I've got an app with around half a million 'records', each of which only stores three fields. I'd like to look up records by a string field with a query, but I'm running into problems. If I visit the console page, manually view a record and save it (without making changes) it shows up in a query: SELECT * FROM wordEntry WHERE wordStr = 'SomeString' If I don't do this, I get 'no results'. Does appengine need time to update? If so, how much? (I was also having trouble batch deleting and modifying data, but I was able to break the problem up into smaller chunks.)

• New to C/C++ Using Android NDK to port Legacy code, getting compile errors

  I have been trying to take some old Symbian C++ code over to Android today using the NDK. I have little to no C or C++ knowledge so its been a chore, however has to be done. My main issue is that I'm having trouble porting what I believe is Symbian specifi code to work using the small C/C++ subset that is available with the Android NDK. Here is a picture of the compilation errors I'm getting using cygwin I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on how to deal with these errors? For instance is TBool/Int/TUint/RPointerArray/RSocket a Symbian primitive and thats why it wont compile or is it something else? Also what is ISO C++? Any tutorials, guides or tips and help would be greatly appreciated.
