• Can this navigation be done completely in CSS [migrated]

  I am a little stuck. I have created almost everything in the picture below. What I am stuck on is I am trying to figure out how I would set it up so that when a user clicks one of the links it makes the line below become red (after the next page loads). Obviously I would need to use Jquery to detect the page then add inline css, but what I am struggling with is I want this to be as easy as possible so that I can give this template to others and then they can add or remove items as necessary. I was trying to figure out if I could somehow use a li element to do this but I have not found a way yet. Does anyone have any ideas to help me?

• Using subdomains or directories for main categories?

  I have a website which references places to travel to in the world. Those places are (of course) grouped by countries. Here is an example of an actual URL of my website: http://awespot.org/country/105/iceland I am wondering if it would be better, in terms of SEO, to have the countries separated in subdomains: http://iceland.awespot.org/ I know subdomains are considered by Google as different websites, so I am considering the 2 options: separating would mean also separating the pagerank and benefits of links to the website but separating would enable me to create a "web" or related websites (all related to travel and all) that link and benefit to each other I am only asking about SEO here, I know there are other questions raised by this possibility (user experience, administration... even password completion by web browsers)

• How to detect if a placement would be empty (Doubleclick for Publishers)?

  I want to use DFP for my ads. To display an ad I am calling GA_googleFillSlot(). My understanding of this is, that this function injects the ad code at the position where the JS call is placed. How can I detect if the placement is empty, e.g. no banner code will be injected because there is currently no banner. I need to know because the surrounding html needs to be adapted. Any ideas? Edit: Alternatively, is it possible to alter the injected html elements? DFP injects a div with id="google_ads_div_$PLACEMENT_ID". Is it possible to add a class attribute?

• No cache and Google AdSense performance

  I'm developing a page where I need to avoid JavaScript caching by browser. I've added this header: <?php header('Cache-Control: no-cache, no-store, must-revalidate'); header('Pragma: no-cache'); header('Expires: 0'); ?> After this, browsers didn't cache more JavaScript sorting out the issue, but in the same time I noticed a drop in Google AdSense RPM. Then I removed the added code and now Google AdSense RPM is reaching again a good value. So, how could I avoid JavaScript caching without meddle with AdSense performance?

In particular, I am interested in monitoring availability of a domain which is in PENDINGDELETE (or REDEMPTIONPERIOD or REGISTRY-DELETE-NOTIFY or PENDINGRESTORE or similar ) status after its expiration date. • Page Titles - Including gender of a fashion product in page titles?

  I need a bit of help to decide whether it is worth including gender in page titles. In the webmaster tools: I looked at our search queries that include "women", and they account for 9% of our total search queries for the site. I am wondering if it is the right way assess the benefit of including "woman" or "men" in page titles, looking at it with existing results pointing to us already? Is there another tool that I can check the actual queries that may not include us in search results? Like google insights maybe? http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=shoes%2Cshoes%20for%20women&cmpt=q So it looks like 1.1% of searches for "shoes" are also "shoes for women" is that correct? • MacOSX VirtualHost: "You don't have permission to access / on this server" error

  The Apache instalation of MacOSX is running Ok. I have tried to create a VirtualHost called test.local, but as soon as I uncomment from /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the line Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf , and try to access test.local virtualhost I get an error "You don't have permission to access / on this server". • Content theft - Where can I go from here?

  I am the webmaster of a very successful blog in a fairly small niche. Recently our success has started to bite us with people copying posts on the site without consent and trying to pass them off as their own work. Most sites stop as soon as you contact them but there is one in particular that is a blogger site which persists in passing off our content as their own. Every post we find we report to Google and they have been fairly good at taking the posts offline within a day or two but this isn't good enough or a long term solution. Given the nature of what is being blogged about after 24 hours the post is pretty much useless so I need some way to just stop them from taking our content? Any ideas? I don't want to go down the route of using a third party for people to get our RSS feed but I guess that is one option?

  while my friends and I planning to run our own website, we're confused about the encryption where hackers can TAPPING or in social engineering it's WIRE TAPPING, but I don't know how do they call it in Computers today... Well guys, I just want to know how encryption works with websites if we are using PHP+MYSQL? Is it ok to use user login ---- (PHP) encrypt inputted value then (PHP) will decrypt and validate it going to (MySQL) user login ---- (PHP) encrypt inputted value and decrypt the (MySQL) data if they are similar... Is it similar if we use $_SESSION without encryption inside PHP going to MySQL?or PHP encryption also helps the manipulation of binaries?..I'm so confused T_T... In regards to what I stated above, can a hacker hook the data if the server uses $_SESSION? Is $_SESSION safe?... IF THE HACKER CAN HOOK it? is it necessary to use SSL on our website? and why do some Merchandise websites use SSL and likewise facebook also uses SSL? what is the best suit for you if there is no SSL? encrypting the DATA using PHP going to MySQL or even without encryption while the PHP server uses $_SESSION?...

As per Google's recommendations: To indicate to Google that you want the German version of the page to be served to searchers using Google in German, the en-us version to searchers using google.com in English, and the en-gb version to searchers using google.co.uk in English, use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" to identify alternate language versions. • Why are intermittent pages disappearing from SERPs?

  I have a very basical informational site with about 50+ pages. Specifically, there is a page about each site. I have been tracking pages daily for months and they have been streadily increasing in the SERPs. Suddenly, about 3-4 weeks ago, about 20 pages were completely missing from the SERPS, though they were still indexed (I could google a specific text from the page in quotes and it would appear). Since then, pages have been added and removed from SERPs continually, cutting my traffic by about 50%. All I have been adding is information about the sites topic. I haven't stolen content or done anything else that seems like it would cause this.

  Bingbot and Yahoo slurp do not support SNI(Server Name Indication when using SSL). Ignoring other workarounds (multi domain certificates, non-SSL content etc.), will Bingbot index pages that have an invalid SSL certificate, eg. issued for example.net, but used on example.com? If possible please provide an example from Yahoo or Bing. I have found websites in bing, that use self signed certificates and are indexed correctly, but what about invalid certificates?

  Ok this is somenthing unbelievable, we have a website, users sign up and receives links to confirm they signed up BUT: 1 - microsoft blocked our IP (no one with microsoft email account can receive our emails) 2 - we tryed contacting microsoft submitting the detailed form about our problem 3 - we posted 3 times in their community about our problem 4 - we tweeted they about our problem 5 - we tryed finding out some telephone support number (the few there are arent' helping at all) Do you think we solved? the answer is NO :/ We still unable to send emails from our IP to microsoft email accounts, since 3 months back. Our emails are perfect we checked all the email headers following microsoft guidelines but it seems not enought, checking our IP reputation it seems everythings ok, indeed we can send email easly to any other provider , gmail, yahoo, etc Do you know any other way to try to get help ? FULL ERROR RETURNED BY MICROSOFT: host mx1.hotmail.com[65.55.37.120] said: 550 SC-001 (COL0-MC4-F28) Unfortunately, messages from 94.23.***** weren't sent. • Prevent mail flagged as spam when switching mail servers (new SPF records)?

  For our business, we send out a significant amount of newsletter alerts to customers that sign up for it on our website. We used to send this mail directly from our web server via PHP. But because the web server limited us to the number of emails we could send per day, we purchased a VM server at a different host (that doesn't throttle email) and we are going to use that account solely for sending out the emails. Anyways, now that the SPF records are going to be different from what they used to be and the source mail server is different, what steps need to be taken to prevent these emails being flagged as spam? I know in Gmail, it's pretty smart about determining if the person actually sending the email is sending it from the server it expects (for flagging Phishing emails, etc). We don't want that to happen to our emails. Just sending a couple test emails out, Gmail's shows the SPF record saying: Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=neutral (google.com: XXX.XXX.23.176 is neither permitted nor denied by best guess record for domain of [email protected]) [email protected] So is there anything we need to do with regards to SPF records as we move forward?

  I recently purchased one of those domain names like del.ico.us. While registering I found that delicious.com was being used. Argument: I found that delicious.com belonged to the same category as my to-be website. It served premium delicious dishes. Counter Argument: My to-be domain though belonging to the same category, specialized in serving free but delicious dishes or in giving out links(affiliate) to other sites serving premium delicious dishes. Additional Counter Arguments: 1.delicious.com was not in English. 2.the del.icio.us in my domain name though having the same spelling, is not going to be used in the same fashion. For eg.(this may not make sense, because the names have been changed)the d in delicious on my website actually stands for the greek letter Delta(?/d) and since internationalized domains are still not easily typable, I am going for the english equivalent.The prefix holds importance for the theme of the service which my website intends to offer. My Question: Can I use the domain name del.icio.us for my website? How are these kinds of matters dealt? (The domain names used are fictitious. And I have already registered the domain but have not started using it.I chanced upon this domain name because it was short, easy to remember and suited the theme of my website.)

• What could be causing this long waiting time on page load?

  What could be causing a 1.18s wait time when my page loads? Just to make sure I did not have any conflicting or parallel scripts loading, I completely deleted all the script on my home page and ran the speed test again. Although I had a blank website and 5kb file size, there was still a 900ms "waiting" time. I'm wondering if it could be my server? Any other thoughts or suggestions as it doesn't seem to be scripts. EDIT - Just ran a DNS test on pingdom and here are my results. Does this tell me anything? No nameservers found at child?

• Share on Facebook does not show thumbnail images

  I have a PHP application which has a "Share on Facebook" button that, On the development server shows the thumbnail images correctly and allows the user to select between them On the live server, it does NOT show the thumbnail images at all. What could be causing this? Note that the text appears fine. Edit1 We are also doing some URL rewriting related to images in the .htaccess (on both servers): ... • DNS query re website Status: inactive

  There is a website that I am assisting with which, when you do a DNS look up on Who.is, returns a Website Status of "inactive". I also noticed the server type is incorrectly reported. This is not a website I generally use for DNS queries so am unsure if it is reliable. Using other DNS checking services reports what Iwould expect and the site is functioning correctly. Research I have done with regard to Website Status: inactive suggests an issue with the DNS configuration? I am looking for help understanding if this is something to be concerned with and if possible how to update this value or how it gets set in the first place.

I am building a lightweight web application and have decided to have sql ce as the database for it. Two questions regarding this: Do i need to get an actual database hosted as well as the site, in order for it to work? • How to verify real people?

  For a music community, I want bands to be able to verify themselves. What is the best way to do this? For example I could let the record label mail me, but some bands are indepedent. I could also ask them to put a 'code' on their website or Facebook page and then check manually. I'm not per se looking for a waterproof solution, so no scanning of real life documents and I'm okay with doing the checks manually. In other words, how can you verify real people with their virtual presence?

• Is SimplePHPBlog a secure blogging engine?

  Has anyone used the blog engine SimplePHPBlog? It is a simple blog engine that uses only text files (no database). My problem with it is that the content directory where the texts files are stored appears to require being world writeable/readable (i.e. permission 777) for it to work. This means anyone can access the text files with a browser! These text files include the blog/comment poster's IP and email address! This is not secure or good practice, right?
