• Problem with user generated content

  In general, what do you think is better in regards to adding content to a site, to allow users to add content to the site and put a flag button to report it if it doesn't fit with the site, or should only I add the content and remove that option? It will be a small site but I don't know if I'll manage to scan the site constantly or deal with the flags and on the other hand I'm worried that the site wont move forward because there will be lot less content, thoughts?

  I am mobile app developer, I would like my application to check for news about new updates of the app when the user opens it. I am unfamiliar on how I would check from a server if the news are actually new or have already been read. • Stop Apache serving filetypes

  Preferably using .htaccess files, though .conf files are an option, is there any way to stop Apache serving certain filetypes? For example, .db shouldn't be served for obvious reason (privacy and whatnot, etc.), so could I make them show as a 404 but still have them available for my CGI scripts? Putting these sensitive files in a directory other than /public_HTML/ is also an option, though I like having them in the same directory as the scripts for ease of use. Cheers

• Do AdWords conversions only track AdWords visitors?

  I have set up an AdWords conversion and put the conversion tracking JS code on a test page. However, I don't see any conversions tracked when I visit it. Does the AdWords conversion tracking only register your conversion if you come to the site by clicking on an AdWords campaign? Google's help page advises me to test the code by clicking a campaign. However, I would like to use the tracking to track all conversions, not just AdWords. I considered using Analytics as well, but it seems you can only track via url there, not JS, which would mean I had to restructure a part of my page. (Because currently a conversion appears does not necessarily happen on a different URL.) Is AdWords tracking not a viable solution to track all visitor conversions on my site?

  I have done some reading on what URLS should look like for search engine optimisation, but I am curious to know how mine would like, I need some advice. I have a tutorial website, and my categories is something like: Web Development -> Client Side -> JavaScript So if I have a tutorial called "What is JavaScript?", is it good to have a URL that looks something like: www.MyWebsite.com/web-development/client-side/javascript/what-is-javascipt Or would something like this be more appropriate: www.MyWebsite.com/tutorials/what-is-javascipt Just curious because I also read that it is wise to have keywords in your URLs. Do I need to add the identifiers of each categories in the link as well, something like: www.MyWebsite.com/1/web-development/5/client-side/15/javascript/100/what-is-javascipt 1 is the unique identifier (primary key) of category web development 5 is the unique identifier (primary key) of category client side 15 is the unique identifier (primary key) of category javascript 100 is the unique identifier (primary key) of tutorial what is javascript UPDATE This is not a programming question so can someone please help migrate this to the correct Q&A site without devoting my questions?

  Does anyone know if authorize.net's SIM rids you of having to be PCI compliant? The payment form is hosted on authorize.net's site and they're processing the payment. I know you can do a relay response which basically puts some of the transaction details in a url that goes back to your website(to display a receipt). I'm not sure what all information gets put into the url though. I'm wondering if that makes you have to become PCI compliant?

  Possible Duplicate: Should I bother supporting IE6? I'm thinking about IE6 support and when to give up on it. Do you have a percentage of total visitors figure in mind for when to drop support? Would you let a trend develop past this figure or are you just going take the first opportunity? I've seen a 44% drop in IE6 visitors in the past 12 months from 23%(ish) of visitors down to 13%(ish). Even if it was 5% it still seems too early to drop support to me (it's still 1 in every 20 users). What are people's thoughts on this?

  I just wanted to get some opinions on the best "web site copying" software out there (free or commercial is fine). I have a site that I've recently become responsible for managing, and the previous consultant has not provided operating system access. As such, the plan is to re-host the web site. I realize there are a lot of different issues to consider in doing this. However, I don't have much choice in the matter now. The plan is to use web site copying software (ala HTTrack) to "rip" the web site, and then modify what is downloaded back in to a maintainable site. This, of course, involves HTML, css, javascript, etc on the front-end. I'd like to recover as much of the site as possible to make re-creating it as easy as possible.

• Mod_rewrite and urls that don't end with .php

  I'm trying to use Mod_rewrite to hide the .php extensions of my pages. However, it refuses to do any rewriting unless the input url ends with .php, which makes that impossible. I can confirm that rewriting works fine as long as the url has .php at the end. RewriteRule a\.php b\.php Works, while RewriteRule a\.html b\.html does not. How can I turn off this behavior and allow it to rewrite all urls? I'm on a shared host so whatever I do has to be done from a .htaccess file. Update: There seems to be some confusion about what I'm asking here. The question is not about how to write the rule, the question is about server configuration. The rule I'm using is fine, I can test that locally. But the server I'm working with is somehow configured so that mod_rewrite doesn't attempt to rewrite anything that doesn't end with .php

  As all SEOs know that google is trying its very best to kill SEO and linkbacks are quite a difficult task now. Although content is the key but my boss is still possessed with linkbacks. I can not do directory posting, link exchange, paid linking, web 2.0 and blog commenting as they are spam now. I do not see what other choice i have except forum posting and article posting. Can someone suggest new method to acquire link backs ? • cPanel email doesn't seem to work - error 550?

  I am fairly new to the web hosting game, so bear with me :) Recently set up a VPS with cPanel and WHM. Everything is going well so far, I've created a user domain and transferred my website there, managed a couple of databases with phpmyadmin, everything was going great until I started messing around with email. I made an email account [email protected] through cPanel, although when I try and email this address I get the following error: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 Unknown user (state 13) Quite unsure of what to do next, in all honesty.

• Website restyle, SEO migration plan?

  I am currently in a project for one of my biggest clients. We have built a website that will -replace- the old website. When it comes to actual content its is largely the same. However, the presentation of the content has changed drastically. From our point of view much more user-friendly (main reason to update the site). Now, since the sites presentation has changed we have some major changes in: HTML & CSS: To change the presentation of the content URL's: To make them better understandable (301 redirects have been taken care of and are in place) Breadcrumbs: To enhance the navigation (we have made the breadcrumbs match exactly with the url's) Pagination: This was added to enable content browsing Title tags: Added descriptive title tags to the major links and buttons. Basically all user content including meta tags have remained the same. Now since this company is rather successful and 90% of its clients come from Google's organic results I am obliged to take all necessary precautions. People tell me I need a migration plan to prevent the site being hurt in Google, but I have never worked using such a plan... ...So, based on the above. Would you consider a migration plan necessary and what precautions/actions would you recommend to prevent us being put down in our SERP positions? Many thanks in advance for your answers.

  I'm looking at setting up a blog, and I think I want to go the static website compiler route, rather than the perhaps more conventional Wordpress route. I'm looking at using blogofile, but could use jekyll as well. These tools recommend using disqus to embed a javascript comment widget on blog posts. I'd go that route, but I'd rather host the comments myself, rather than use a third party. I could certainly write my own dirt-simple comment server, but I was wondering if anyone knew of one that already exists (of the open source variety). Thanks!

  I have a directory website and I want to send focused emails, a small amount, less than 50 a month, to some of the businesses on my directory that get many visitors. The intention is to let them now many people are viewing there page and encourage them to update it and post information on it. How can I send this small number of emails without being targeted as spam? Also, should I send it from an email with the websites domain or will it better to send from a personal email? that way at least of email is tagged as spam sometimes it won't hurt the website's reputation, is this true?

  Is it possible to forward firstdomain.com to www.seconddomain.com or seconddomain.com using surely dns records? I know how to forward www.firstdomain.com to seconddomain.com (with CNAME). What I am trying to do is move my site from one domain to another (new) one, and not break all the links which use the old domain name.   Hello, A CMS-based site I manage is suffering from a small but ominously growing number of almost certainly bot-emplaced, invisible spam links placed in registered-user-only shoutboxes and user forums. "Link Spam", yes? Until recently, I've kept my eyes on narrow tech issues, and I'm having trouble understanding what's going on. I understand that we need to tighten up our registration procedures, but more generally... Do I understand correctly that our primary interest in combatting link spam on our site is that major search engines reduce or zero the search visibility of sites that contain link spam? Although we're non-commercial, we don't want to be at the bottom of the rankings, or eliminated altogether. Are the linked-to sites the direct beneficiaries of the spam links, or is there some kind of indirection? What is the likely relationship between the link-spammers and the owners of the (directly or indirectly) linked-to sites? Are the owners of the linked-to sites paying the link-spammers for higher visibility? Are the owners aware that this method is being used? It is my impression that major search engines are capable these days of detecting that given sites are being promoted by link spam, and that these sites may consequently be reduced in search rank or dropped altogether. Do these sanctions occur frequently? Is there any potential value in sending notifications to the owners of the linked-to sites that their visibility is at risk? TIA, hen3ry

I am using Market Samurai as my research tool, and I was wondering if I could ask for your help to identify the best key word to target for my niche. I do plan on incorporating all of them into my site, but I wanted to start with one. If you could give me your input on these keywords, I would appreciate it. This is all new to me :) I'm too new to post pictures, but here are my keywords (Searches, SEO Traffic, and SEO Value / Day): Searches | SEO Traffic | PBR | SEO Value | Average PR/Backlinks of Current Top 10 1: 730 | 307 | 20% | 2311.33 | 1.9 / 7k-60k 2: 325 | 137 | 24% | 822.94 | 2.3 / 7k-60k 3: 398 | 167 | 82% | 589.79 | 1.6 / 7k-60k I'm wondering if the PBR (Phrase-to-broad) value of #1 is too low. It seems like the best value because the SEOV is crazy high. That is like $70k a month. #3 has the highest PBR, but also the lowest SEOV. #2 doesn't seem worth it because of the PR competetion. Might be a little too hard to get into the top page of Google. I'm wondering which keywords to target, and if I should be looking at any other metric to see if this is a profitable niche to jump into. Thanks.
