• Should I block bots from my site and why?

  My logs are full of bot visitors, often from Eastern Europe and China. The bots are identified as Ahrefs, Seznam, LSSRocketCrawler, Yandex, Sogou and so on. Should I block these bots from my site and why? Which ones have a legitimate purpose in increasing traffic to my site? Many of them are SEO. I have to say I see less traffic if anything since the bots have arrived in large numbers. It would not be too hard to block these since they all admit in their User Agent that they are bots.

  I used to find http://www.patterntap.com quite useful to get design inspiration for forms, tabs, and other web elements etc. Unfortunately after the ZURB acquisition of Patterntap now they enforce you to sign in with your Twitter account in order to simply view larger images of patterns provided by the crowd. So in some way it's not free anymore. Do you know of alternatives to patterntap that are free and you are not obliged to sign in?

• In-page Google Analytics giving no page views recorded

  I am trying to use Google In-Page Analytics. The rest of Google Analytics seems to work correctly on my site, but when I go to the new In-page analytics, I get no click appearing. I just get an error saying "There are no pageviews recorded for this page. Try adjusting the date range or select an alternate page." To the left in the content details it tells the number of page views. Do I need to setup something special for In-Page anayltics to work?

  I have a quick question but I've been struggling to find the best solution: I have two java webapps and wordpress (php) that I need to serve through my Prod website: App #1 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/ (this would have other url too such as "www.example.com/book") App #2 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/manage Finally WordPress would be accessed at www.example.com/info How can I configure apache to serve all these three instances at the same time? • Why old (301) links stay on Google when breaking site down to multiple domains

  Some background: We did have single site and single domain (let's call it mainsite.com) with product information, however things have changed since and product database has grown fast. So we decided to move some major products/manufacturers under their own domains (let's call one of them subsite.com) while still using our main database/codebase. What we've done: Added subsite.com domain for product 1 by Great Products Co. Some new nice looking front pages, info pages, etc. Detail pages that will use information from original db. Redirected product/group links from mainsite.com using 301 redirect. Verified that redirects works as expected. Waited some time for Google reindexing (over 30 days, I've heard it should be more than enough). Results: If I search our moved products from Google then it will found them and list them but with old links to our main page like mainsite.com/group/product1 but it should show link to new site subsite.com/product1. Links from Goole redirects as they should, as said redirects are verified [301]. Main question: Any reasons why Google would not follow 301 redirects and update links so that they will point to our new mfg/product site subsite.com?

I would like to see email marketing data to see what kind of content a business sends out, the frequency of sending, the number of people emailed, especially the resulting open rates and click through rates. Are businesses willing to share data on their previous email marketing campaigns without divulging their contact list? • How web server choose between unicode and utf-8 for accentued characters?

  I have a web server with my ISP which replaces in the urls the accentued characters by their unicode values: for instance é (eacute) is translated to %e9 (dec 233). For testing I use locally Easyphp which translate those characters by their utf-8 equivalence: é is then replaced by the well known sequence %c3%a9 (é)... Browsers served by Easyphp don't decode unicode values but they do if running locally (utf-8 and non converted accent also)... I have been unable to find where this behavior is configured in the server. This is a problem as some urls are built by my application using the php rawurlencode() which seems to always encode with unicode values on both servers. Any idea? Thanks in advance.

What solutions could I apply to reduce storage needs? Is there a way to reduce the size of images without affecting quality too much? This is very much an objective question with legitimate use and purpose to identify hosts that offer the following: Multi Domain SSL Certificate Linux Server PHP5+ cPanel Unlimited Storage, Bandwidth, MySql DBs and Addon Domains SSL is mentioned first because this is most important. This is not a single domain or wildcard SSL cert. It's relatively new and unique. It's for the purpose of securing multiple domains on one account without having to have an entirely separate hosting account and SSL cert for every domain. I'm currently using BlueHost/HostMonster which meets all my criteria except for this special kind of SSL cert. Currently, HostGator is the only host that offers everything I've listed that I've been able to find. Again, I'm not requesting recommendations, advice or opinions of the best or most reputable service based on your experiences. I am asking for an objective list of known hosts that offer the aforementioned listed items only. Thereafter, I (and others who this will benefit) can make our comparisons and selection privately.

  The Technology website Ars Technica has adjusted their URL rewrite rules to end with a .ars. Traditionally, sites have taken advantage of this URL rewriting capability to completely eliminate file suffixes like .html, .php, .aspx etc, under the theory that this made for better SEO (since the content of the URL was more relevant to the content) Ars Technicas, though, look like this: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/03/flow-from-the-poles-drive-sunspot-levels.ars So, is Ars Technica adding the .ars file suffix purely a vanity play? Or is it an SEO trick to improve the site's SEO by cleverly inserting their site name into every URL slug? And, if this is indeed an effective SEO trick, should other sites follow suit?

  I need to do client-side includes on a website for the navigation. The problem is the navigation is currently all html, and since I can't use php i've just been using js to include the html with document.write (). however, i read that this is not good for seo. While i know there are seo-friendly js navigation menus, I was wondering if there's a way to do this while including the html and not having to alter it very much? I also got it to work using embed with html which i know is super hacky but i don't really know that much about js and am frustrated being told not to use server side includes. thanks!!

  The clients on my VPS are all getting spammed. The spam seemingly comes from their own email addresses - it is clear that somehow something got into my VPS and was able to capture all the email addresses that existed and is now using them to send spam. I was advised to set up a SPF record, but I am unsure what this is or how to go about it. After reading, I have figured out how to create one in CPanel, but I cannot find what to do with it now. Do I copy it into somewhere in my DNS records in Zone Management? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  We build a webapp that allows users to run the app under their own subdomain. So we run the app under search.domainX.com, search.domainY.com and so on. They each have their own Google Analytics to track individual stats. But we want to know what general traffic for all clients of our app. So we want to know stuff like "among all our clients we had x number of views." What is the best way tool to track that sort of thing. We prefer a snippet based solution similar to Google Analytics if possible.

  I am trying to track goals in Google Analytics for a website that has the goal URL on a sub-domain. The main domain for example is: domain.com and the sub-domain is my.domain.com. I have Google Analytics configured to track domains and all sub-domains and I've eve set up an advanced filter so I can see traffic to my sub-domains in Analytics. However, in goal tracking, you're supposed to put in the website URL after the front (so if it were domain.com/conversions/ you'd put in just /conversions/). However, since for me it would be my.domain.com/conversions/, how would I input that URL into Analytics to track? Would Analytics automatically determine the URL to be on the sub-domain? Thanks!

We are evaluating hosting on Amazon EC2 however I'm not sure how to do that properly. One (micro) instance per website is too expensive ~10 websites on one instance (using apache virtual hosts) make auto scaling impossible (or at least difficult) Or is cloud computing not suitable for such a usecase?

  Is there any way through CSS to style nested ordered lists to display sub numbers? The idea is similar to using heading levels. However what I'd really like to see is the following. Note each of these subsections has text not just a title. This isn't a real example just some organisational stuff. • Managing user privileges, best practices [on hold]

  I'm am new to web development. I'm creating a website where different user can have different privileges, such as creating/editing/deleting a news, or adding/editing/deleting whatever kind of content on the website. I started by creating a "user type" that would indicate the user's privileges (such as "user", "newser", "moderator", "admin", and so on), but I quickly started noticing issues that made me think that this might be a naive approach to this issue. What if I want to give a regular user the right to edit a news (for whatever reason)? Then the user would be half "user", half "newser". But the system I use can only handle one user-type. So what would be the best practice here? I was thinking of removing the concept of roles (or "user-types" such as newser) and only have the concept of "privilege", where every user could have zero to many privileges. So, to re-use the above example, if I wanted a user to have the right to edit some news, I would only have to give him a "edit news" privilege. Is this the way to go?
