• How do I start "Ubuntu classic desktop" (no effects) from the command line

  I am able to run sessions over an ssh connection but I rather use the "Ubuntu classic desktop (no effects)" version on Ubuntu 11.04 instead of the new Unity since I don't have 3d support on the laptop I'm using to display the graphical User Interface. How can I startup the older gnome-session without the 3d effects? I tried gnome-session but it seems to be the option with the 3d effects and I want a more stripped down session over my ssh session.

• Is there a simple way to stop enemies standing in the same spot?

  So: top-down game, my enemies chase the player, when they get within a certain distance they stand still and fire. If they're all coming from the same direction they all end up standing in the same spot (i.e. standing "within" each other), as I'm not currently doing collision detection between enemies - they are free to pass over each other. What's a simple way around this? Either some form of collision detection or some ai?

• Lock mouse in center of screen, and still use to move camera Unity

  I am making a program from 1st person point of view. I am also very concerned about clamping the mouse to the center of the screen, since you will be selecting items, and it is easiest to have a simple cross-hairs in the center of the screen for this purpose. Screen.lockCursor = true; does not work though, since then the camera no longer moves, and the cursor does not allow you to click anything else either.

• Motivating yourself to actually write the code after you've designed something

  Does it happen only to me or is this familiar to you too? It's like this: You have to create something; a module, a feature, an entire application... whatever. It is something interesting that you have never done before, it is challenging. So you start to think how you are going to do it. You draw some sketches. You write some prototypes to test your ideas. You are putting different pieces together to get the complete view. You finally end up with a design that you like, something that is simple, clear to everybody, easy maintainable... you name it. You covered every base, you thought of everything. You know that you are going to have this class and that file and that database schema. Configure this here, adapt this other thingy there etc. But now, after everything is settled, you have to sit down and actually write the code for it. And is not challenging anymore.... Been there, done that! Writing the code now is just "formalities" and makes it look like re-iterating what you've just finished. At my previous job I sometimes got away with it because someone else did the coding based on my specifications, but at my new gig I'm in charge of the entire process so I have to do this too ('cause I get payed to do it). But I have a pet project I'm working on at home, after work and there is just me and no one is paying me to do it. I do the creative work and then when time comes to write it down I just don't feel like it (lets browse the web a little, see what's new on P.SE, on SO etc). I just want to move to the next challenging thing, and then to the next, and the next... Does this happen to you too? How do you deal with it? How do you convince yourself to go in and write the freaking code? I'll take any answer.

  I'm looking for a script, functioning like the Google homepage that fetches data from a database rather than the internet. This is not intended to be a search engine, but a repository of jokes that can be pulled depending on the keywords typed. No sophisticated search techniques are required - keyword based is perfectly fine. If some mechanism of up/down-voting jokes can be incorporated, that would be fantastic, but I'm presuming that will be an entirely different game.

• Getting Started Plugging into the "Find in Projects" Dialog

  In case you missed it amidst all the code in yesterday's blog entry, the "Find in Projects" dialog is now pluggable. I think that's really cool. The code yesterday gives you a complete example, but let's break it down a bit and deconstruct down to a very simple hello world scenario. We'll end up with as many extra tabs in the "Find in Projects" dialog as we need, for example, three in this case:  And clicking on any of those extra tabs will, in this simple example, simply show us this: Once we have that, we'll be able to continue adding small bits of code over the next few blog entries until we have something more useful. Now I'm wondering if there is any function that scales down the world. For example, how can I simulate the throw of tennis ball within a room, without using a window of only 5 x 5 pixels? • How to move a website and domain name without experiencing downtime for emails or site?

  Okay, I have a pretty complex problem, so I'll get right to it. I'm a designer who built a new website for my client. Their old site is hosted at GoDaddy, as well as their email. Problem is, the guy who built the original site decided to put the original domain name and hosting under HIS personal GoDaddy account. Well, that turned out to be a bad move for several reasons. Here's how it's all tied together. The original domain name, www.domainoriginal.com, was actually purchased at Network Solutions. The original web designer pointed the nameservers from Network Solutions to his GoDaddy account, where the email and hosting is setup. The new domain name, www.domainnew.com, was purchased under a new and separate GoDaddy account belonging to the company, and the new website was built under a 3rd party platform (Big Commerce). So, the www.domainnew.com is already pointed to the new website using A records at new GoDaddy account. All is fine there. However, they still need www.domainoriginal.com to point to the NEW website as well. (The old one can simply be deleted, it is NOT important). AND, they want to keep their old email addresses intact and working as well, but under the NEW GoDaddy account. Obviously, I have no DNS control at Network Solutions, and I have no idea what kind of control I have at GoDaddy under the old account because the web designer will not let me see inside his account. But, he and GoDaddy both tell me nothing can be done other than to repoint the nameservers to Network Solutions, and then repoint the A record to my new website, www.domainnew.com, and point the MX Records to GoDaddy. I'm told the downtime would be 24-48 hours if I do this. Ideally, we'd like to do a domain name transfer and get www.domainoriginal.com in the new GoDaddy account created by the company. But, I'm told this could take up to 7 days. Does this mean the site and email will be down for 7 days? And any emails sent during this time, would they be lost forever? If I do this, how long could I expect the site and email to go down? And, will the emails be permanently lost? I've gotten different answers from everybody at GoDaddy so I kind of don't trust them anymore... Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Tyson

And we all go rhapsodic!  It boils down to the age old dilemma, "if the cops are so busy protecting us then who will protect them" (even the folks back at Hollywood keep us reminded)! Who is going to ensure that these internet based services do not go down(either intentionally or by some malicious third party) leading to a multinational colossal disaster .At the risk of sounding pessimistic,  IT IS NOT AN ISSUE OF TRUST, this is but a mere case of Murphy's Law!  What then? Should the "cloud" be trusted to this extent at this time?  This is an era where challenges are rapidly solved with lightning promptness to "beat the competition", my hope is that our solutions are not just creating problems that we may not be able to solve!  Keeping my ear on the Ground.

My internet speed in Ubuntu 12.04 at my home network is really slow. • The Birth of SSAS Compare

  Noemi Moreno, Red Gate Business Intelligence Specialist Software vendors – even Microsoft – tend to forget about the needs of business intelligence developers. We are a rare and rather invisible species. For example, BIDS remained in VS 2008 until SQL Server 2012. It took until this release before we got something as simple as an “undo” function. Before I joined Red Gate as a BI specialist, I worked on SQL Development. I’ll never forget the time I discovered Red Gate’s SQL Compare tool and how it reduced the task of preparing a database release from a couple of days to ten minutes. When I moved to SSAS, MDX and cubes, I became frustrated with the deployment process because I couldn’t find a tool that made Cube releases as easy as they are with SQL Compare. This became my quest. I pitched the idea to a few people in Red Gate’s regular Down Tools Week, when everyone puts down their day-to-day tasks and works on their own projects. My task was to reason with a roomful of cynical developers, hardened to the blandishments of project managers, for help to develop a tool that would compare two different SSAS databases and create the script to process only the objects that needed processing, thereby reducing release time to only a few minutes. I walked to the podium and gave them the full story of the distressed BI specialists, doomed to spend tedious hours preparing deployment scripts. A few developers recovered from their torpor to cast a languid eye at my presentation. It wasn’t enough. In a sudden impulse, I blurted out a promise to perform a flamenco dance for just the team if the tool was able to successfully compare two SSAS databases and generate a script by the end of the week. I was lucky enough that some of them believed me and jumped in: David Pond (Dev), Matt Burton (Dev), Tilman Bregler (Dev), Shobana Sekar (Test), Ruchija Raj (Test), Nick Sutherland (Product Manager) and Irma Tanovic (BI). They didn’t know that Irma and I would be away on a conference in Amsterdam and would leave them without our support. But to my surprise, they had a working tool by the time we came back – basic, and with a few bugs, but a working tool nonetheless! Seeing it compare a very basic SSAS database, detect the changes and generate the scripts was amazing! Something that normally takes half a day was done in under a minute. Since then, a few months have passed and a BI Tools team has been created at Red Gate to work full time on BI tools for BI developers, starting with SSAS Compare. How cool is that? • Using SOUNDEX and DIFFERENCE to Standardize Data in SQL Server

  My client wants to standardize address information for existing and future addresses collected for their customers, particularly the street suffixes. The application used to enter and collect address information has the street suffix separated from the address field, but it is a textbox instead of a drop down list therefore things are not standardized. I know there are some options out there to standarize data, but they would like a less expensive alternative. Are there any functions in SQL Server that I can use to standardized data?

• Ubuntu 14.04 hangs at purple screen after it asks for my password

  I have installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS onto a Toshiba Tecra M5. The install appears to have been successful but when it says "install complete restart your computer" the computer does not restart. It just sits there, then after a forced shut down Ubuntu appears to start, icons appear in the top right hand corner of the screen but after it asks for my password it just hangs up on the purple screen. Can anyone help ?

• boxes adding up to 100% of the browser [closed]

  I want to have 2 boxes right next to each other, one with a fixed width, and another with a width that will change based on the size of the browser. The box has overflow:auto, and I'm trying to get the first box to act as a side bar that will follow you down the page. But of course I can't seem to achieve this, and have come here hoping someone could give me some examples, or point me in the right direction. Thanks!
