• Search relevance from XML docs (XQuery?) vs MySQL

  Hello there, I have a website where documents are saved in xml documents, all with the same structure. I need a search engine where I am able to choose documents with the highest relevance according to the key words given by a searching user. I thought it could (?) be a good idea to have one using XQuery rather than having the information stored twice (in XML docs + mysql database) and querying the mysql database for relevance searches. Is XQuery any good for this, and how, and what speed can I expect on +1000 documents of about 7kb each. Thank you for your time. Kind regards

  For converting between Latitude/Longitude and UK's Ordnance Survey National Grid eastings and northings, this seems to be the most popular explanation and reference implementation in JavaScript: http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong-gridref.html The web is littered with other implementations in different languages. Making the conversion via PostGIS queries is another alternative. ...but did anyone implement this maths in ruby? OSGridToLatLong is the direction I'm looking for just at this moment, but I would have thought a library for converting in both directions must surely be available in a gem somewhere. I'm just not searching for the right thing.

• Using a proxy for NSURLConnection

  Is there any way to get the content of a webfile (namely a .html Document) using a proxy, which is not defined in the system settings? I know that NSURLConnection is the right way to download a web file into a variable and not into a file (for which we should use NSURLDownload), but I don't find a way to use a proxy for it. Are there some unofficial APIs, Libraries or Classes or such I could use for what I want to do? I'm not that pro in Mac Programming, so I'm searching for something more or less simple. SideSwipe

  I'm using PHP Version 5.1.6 I have a string (session file) and need to extract a value from it, so i'm searching for a needle in the string but it returns false, I reduced the code to this: $string = ';SERVER_NAME|s:17:"stackoverflow.com";REMOTE_ADDR|s:13:"69.59.196.211";'; $start = strpos($string, ';SERVER_NAME|s:"'); echo $start; // prints nothing because $start = false $start = strpos($string, 'SERVER_NAME|s:'); echo $start; // prints 1; As you noticed if I have the character ';' or the character '"' in the needle, the search returns false, I tryed to use chr() for all characters in the needle but had the same result, If I remove the ';' and the '"' from the string if finds the needle in the string. How can I search special characters in a string using PHP ?

• Looking for Google Reader javscript commands for controlling events

  I've played in the /reader/ui/ code for a few hours now, and couldn't figure this out. Also, I didn't see any exact help when searching StackOverflow. This is really a JavaScript un-obfuscator question. I'm looking for a way to call the obfuscated Google Reader javascript commands... and am having trouble determining what actual function is called when the "Next Items" button is pressed or the spacebar is hit. I've tried using Firebug as well as FireEvents to track it down, but it's just too well hidden. Any ideas? Something that I could type into the URL bar and make it run, something like 'javascript:SH("entries-down", "click");void(0);' Thanks in advance! And, please let me know if it's against Google's terms of service to de-obfuscate their code to view these JavaScript commands.

• Fast read of certain bytes of multiple files in C/C++

  I've been searching in the web about this question and although there are many similar questions about read/write in C/C++, I haven't found about this specific task. I want to be able to read from multiple files (256x256 files) only sizeof(double) bytes located in a certain position of each file. Right now my solution is, for each file: Open the file (read, binary mode): fstream fTest("current_file", ios_base::out | ios_base::binary); Seek the position I want to read: fTest.seekg(position*sizeof(test_value), ios_base::beg); Read the bytes: fTest.read((char *) &(output[i][j]), sizeof(test_value)); And close the file: fTest.close(); This takes about 350 ms to run inside a for{ for {} } structure with 256x256 iterations (one for each file). Q: Do you think there is a better way to implement this operation? How would you do it?

• Efficient most common suffix algorithm?

  I have a few GBs worth of strings, and for every prefix I want to find 10 most common suffixes. Is there an efficient algorithm for that? An obvious solution would be: Store sorted list of <string, count> pairs. Identify by binary search extent for prefix we're searching. Find 10 highest counts in this extent. Possibly precompute it for all short prefixes, so it doesn't ever need to look at large portion of data. I'm not sure if that would actually be efficient at all. Is there a better way I overlooked? Answers must be real time, but it can take as much preprocessing as necessary.

• matlab constant anonymous function returns only one value instead of an array

  I've been searching the net for a couple of mornings and found nothing, hope you can help. I have an anonymous function like this f = @(x,y) [sin(2*pi*x).*cos(2*pi*y), cos(2*pi*x).*sin(2*pi*y)]; that needs to be evaluated on an array of points, something like x = 0:0.1:1; y = 0:0.1:1; w = f(x',y'); Now, in the above example everything works fine, the result w is a 11x2 matrix with in each row the correct value f(x(i), y(i)). The problem comes when I change my function to have constant values: f = @(x,y) [0, 1]; Now, even with array inputs like before, I only get out a 1x2 array like w = [0,1]; while of course I want to have the same structure as before, i.e. a 11x2 matrix. I have no idea why Matlab is doing this...

  Hello Experts, Developing using MVC-3, Razor, C# Been searching around and cannot find advice I'm looking for. My site will contain user-uploaded images (possibly a high number). What is the best practice for managing these pictures (placement, breakdown into sub-folders, etc...)? Where do I place them that will prevent them from getting accidentally blown away if I republish my site periodically? If there are any good articles or blog posts, that would be helpful.   I get the following error when trying to sign up for the Microsoft Azure 90-day free trial: We can't authorize the payment method. Please make sure the information is correct, or use another payment method. If you continue to get this message, please contact your financial institution. I've tried three different cards, two credit and one debit. Those cards are issued from two different banks. I've also tried the cards on two separate accounts. Someone from my work also confirmed that he could not sign up for the free trial either. Has anyone else had this problem? I haven't really seen much help searching Google and the support staff doesn't seem interested in helping people sign up for free accounts.

• Compiling Qt for Windows 98

  I need to support Windows 98. The Qt documentation claims this is possible, but there are no instructions. The distributed binaries don't run on Win98 and the majority of Qt applications I have sampled also don't. For several apps that do run on 98, I have asked authors how they did it, but the common answer is that it was accidental and they don't know what factors caused it. In searching the forums for help, I found only guesses that turned out to be wrong. For example, one belief is that to compile for Win9x, you must build the tools and the apps on that platform. Yet, things I found to run were built on newer versions of Windows. What is required to build the Qt dev tools and then applications for Win98? How about cross-compiling from WinXP or Linux? Are there specific components that can't be made to run on Win98? Are there particular difficulties with dynamic or static linking for Win98 support?

I guess that this is happening because some requests are lost or that the responses dont come in order..... Any idea what to do to keep it asynchronous?

• Project Euler #163 understanding

  I spent quite a long time searching for a solution to this problem. I drew tons of cross-hatched triangles, counted the triangles in simple cases, and searched for some sort of pattern. Unfortunately, I hit the wall. I'm pretty sure my programming/math skills did not meet the prereq for this problem. So I found a solution online in order to gain access to the forums. I didn't understand most of the methods at all, and some just seemed too complicated. Can anyone give me an understanding of this problem? One of the methods, found here: http://www.math.uni-bielefeld.de/~sillke/SEQUENCES/grid-triangles (Problem C) allowed for a single function to be used. How did they come up with that solution? At this point, I'd really just like to understand some of the concepts behind this interesting problem. I know looking up the solution was not part of the Euler spirit, but I'm fairly sure I would not have solved this problem anyhow.

This isnt the first time i heard a table can do it but i tried without luck. Searching SO only got me results when i do know the size of the image. How do i do this with a table? In this example I'd like to get a list of directories call 'modules' that do NOT have a subdirectory called module. modules/package1/modules/spackage1 modules/package1/modules/spackage2 modules/package1/modules/spackage3/modules modules/package1/modules/spackage3/modules/spackage1 modules/package2/modules/ The list I desire would contain modules/package1/modules/spackage3/modules/ modules/package2/modules/ All the directories named module that do not have a subdirectory called module I started with trying something this with no luck find . -name modules \! -exec sh -c 'find -name modules' \; -exec works on exit code, okay lets pass the count as exit code find . -name modules -exec sh -c 'exit $(find {} -name modules|grep -n ""|tail -n1|cut -d: -f1)' \; This should take the count of each subdirectory called modules and exit with it. No such love.

• C++ method chaining including class constructor

  Hello, I'm trying to implement method chaining in C++, which turns out to be quite easy if the constructor call of a class is a separate statement, e.g: Foo foo; foo.bar().baz(); But as soon as the constructor call becomes part of the method chain, the compiler complains about expecting ";" in place of "." immediately after the constructor call: Foo foo().bar().baz(); I'm wondering now if this is actually possible in C++. Here is my test class: class Foo { public: Foo() { } Foo& bar() { return *this; } Foo& baz() { return *this; } }; I also found an example for "fluent interfaces" in C++ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluent_interface#C.2B.2B) which seems to be exactly what I'm searching for. • Extract anything that looks like links from large amount of data in python

  Hi, I have around 5 GB of html data which I want to process to find links to a set of websites and perform some additional filtering. Right now I use simple regexp for each site and iterate over them, searching for matches. In my case links can be outside of "a" tags and be not well formed in many ways(like "\n" in the middle of link) so I try to grab as much "links" as I can and check them later in other scripts(so no BeatifulSoup\lxml\etc). The problem is that my script is pretty slow, so I am thinking about any ways to speed it up. I am writing a set of test to check different approaches, but hope to get some advices :) Right now I am thinking about getting all links without filtering first(maybe using C module or standalone app, which doesn't use regexp but simple search to get start and end of every link) and then using regexp to match ones I need.

  Hi I have a Creative Life CAM Optia AF webcam, the software included in the package is able to control the camera in different ways, like set autofocus to auto or manual, and a bunch of gamma and brightness settings. I'm capturing the feed with the AForge Computer vision library, and it's working great. But i would like to be able to set the manual focus from inside my application. Ive been searching for a tutorial, but come up empty handed. Can i somehow either disassemble the included software, or is there some way to fetch the traffic / instructions being sent to the device? My CEO has asked me to create a technology standards document, explaining things like the technology we use, our policy on adapting to new technology, and design standards like percent of code covered by unit tests. I've never had to do something like this, and I've spent a significant amount of time searching the web for examples, but I haven't found any at all. The closest I've found are documents describing technical specifications for an individual product. However, I'm trying to define this for the entire company.   I'm building some YouTube search functionality into an iPhone app and want to ensure that I only receive results that will be playable on the device. According to the Searching for videos section in the API reference doc this seems to be relatively straightforward: The format parameter specifies that videos must be available in a particular video format. Your request can specify any of the following formats: I've currently set my project to only return videos with "format=1" which will limit to: RTSP streaming URL for mobile video playback. H.263 video (up to 176x144) and AMR audio. I'd love if someone could confirm that this is in fact the appropriate setting or let me know if I'm missing something. Cheers.

• Building a code search engine for java code in git repositories

  I'm trying to build a Java code search engine. Apart from just searching for keywords, I would also like cross-referencing between classes to work. It should work the way eclipse's referencing works - click on anything to open the definition. Bonus would be if something like search-all-usages-of-foo works. I'm thinking of using Apache Solr to index the files and build the basic search. But I'm not sure how I'd do the crossreferencing part since Solr doesn't understand Java code. Any suggestions on what I could use here? EDIT: I mainly want to index a lot of java git repositories.

• how to get an instance of an XMLEventAllocator?

  I am trying to follow the recommended way of parsing XML with StAX using sun's Cursor-to-Event Example for Java EE 5. You are supposed to traverse the XML via the Cursor API and allocate an XMLEventusing an XMLEventAllocator when necessary. Awkwardly, sun's own example does not compile (at least not with JDK 1.6, even with 1.5 code compliance). The example tries to instantiate an allocator via new, but the according implementation classes in the JDK are not accessible externally. After reading the JavaDocs and searching the web I have found literally nothing. One could implement the XMLEventAllocator interface from scratch, but it seems really wrong, when there are perfectly good implementations in the JDK, besides not being an expert in StAX makes it difficult to get it right.
