• Cannot install "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" (SystemError)

  I have just installed a fresh copy of 12.04.1 64bit. I formatted my PC completely and enabled updates during the installation. After the installation was complete, I went on updating my software. However, when I wanted to install the additional drivers using the Additional Drivers tool (namely "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver"), it gave me this error: SystemError: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. The same error shows up if I try installing the post-release updates driver. Installing the drivers from the terminal results in this output: XXXXXX:~$ sudo apt-get install fglrx [sudo] password for XXXXX: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Can't really test any new solutions you may give me until ~10 hours from now on. • How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time. • Looking for a recommendation on measuring a high availability app that is using a CDN.

  I work for a Fortune 500 company that struggles with accurately measuring performance and availability for high availability applications (i.e., apps that are up 99.5% with 5 seconds page to page navigation). We factor in both scheduled and unscheduled downtime to determine this availability number. However, we recently added a CDN into the mix, which kind of complicates our metrics a bit. The CDN now handles about 75% of our traffic, while sending the remainder to our own servers. We attempt to measure what we call a "true user experience" (i.e., our testing scripts emulate a typical user clicking through the application.) These monitoring scripts sit outside of our network, which means we're hitting the CDN about 75% of the time. Management has decided that we take the worst case scenario to measure availability. So if our origin servers are having problems, but yet the CDN is serving content just fine, we still take a hit on availability. The same is true the other way around. My thought is that as long as the "user experience" is successful, we should not unnecessarily punish ourselves. After all, a CDN is there to improve performance and availability! I'm just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of how other Fortune 500 companies calculate their availability numbers? I look at apple.com, for instance, of a storefront that uses a CDN that never seems to be down (unless there is about to be a major product announcement.) It would be great to have some hard, factual data because I don't believe that we need to unnecessarily hurt ourselves on these metrics. We are making business decisions based on these numbers. I can say, however, given that these metrics are visible to management, issues get addressed and resolved pretty fast (read: we cut through the red-tape pretty quick.) Unfortunately, as a developer, I don't want management to think that the application is up or down because some external factor (i.e., CDN) is influencing the numbers. Thoughts? • How do I `SUM` by multiple columns in Excel

  I have a comma delimited file that includes two columns date/time (which imports as Excel's mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm custom format) and status of 1 or 0. The status represents a piece of equipment either being on or off. I'm trying to generate a graph that will show, hours up vs. down by day. CONSIDER: 1/1/2012 00:00, 1 1/1/2012 03:00, 0 1/1/2012 14:00, 1 1/3/2012 00:00, 0 This tells me that the equipment was up for three hours, down for eleven hours, and then up for thirty-four hours (across two calendar days). However, I would like to generate a graph that shows how many hours PER DAY we were up or down. CONSIDER: 1/1 XXXXXXXXXXXXX----------- (up 13, down 11) 1/2 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (up 24) To me, it seems that I need to generate a dataset summing HOURS by STATUS by CALENDAR DAY...but I can't seem to find a flavor of pivot table or nested SUM(IF(SUMIF(...))) combination to make it work. Most troubling is accounting for date changes...in my example above, since my uptime starting at 14:00 on 1/1/2012 crosses midnight, I need to know that 10 uptime hours get totalled with 1/1/2012 and 24 uptime hours get totalled with 1/2/2012. I may be able to do something with a calendar list to drive the date summation, but then I need a way to compare 01/01/2012 to 01/01/2012 03:00 as equal. There's got to be a way along the lines of if(INTEGER-PORTIONS-OF-SERIAL-DATES-ARE-EQUAL,TOTAL-HOURS-IF-VALUE-IS_1,0) but nothing's worked so far. Any suggestions? • Delete on windows vista and seven -- discovery process

  Hi SUs! I've recently encountered a problem. Using svn at work I needed to clear some space. As you may know svn directories are full of sub-directories and files. So the delete process begins with a step of discovering the items to be deleted (I guess this is for displaying the progress bar). But in my case it ended up to be still running after I watched Braveheart (Off-topic: good film in my opinion. On-topic: and it last 2h50) and counting 440 000+ files. I finally decided to cut off the process and use the good old cmd with a del <directory> to do the job. (Done in some minutes) So I'm wondering if someone know how to override the system to make it actually begins the process while scanning the other items? At the end, I just want the file to be deleted and I don't care the number of files to be deleted. On the contrary I care about the time it takes. Thanks

• MS Excel and Access - which is better for reports?

  Where I work, staff have just started to use a basic table in excel (1 october) to record sales which has about 10 columns (name, client, renewed, discount, paid etc). I record the data (total sold etc) every hour and email it to the manager. Each staff has the their own file on the network which they use constantly for that day (eg. John 08-10.xlsx; John 09-10.xlsx etc) and have been told to save the file after they complete a row with client data. I can see the file (in read only mode) to update the report but I am sure there must be a way of doing an autoupdate of their worksheets in real time. I can link worksheets and workbooks to my main workbook but manually. Does anyone have suggestions on have to do this on Excel? Or would Access allow me to make a report which shows the sales total for that hour without the staff closing the file or constantly clicking save every few minutes? We use office 2010. thanks

• Redis connection issue

  We are currently experiencing a lot of Redis errors with the message Unable to connect: read error on connection, trying next server We run Redis on FreeBSD using PHP Redis and we have a hard time reproducing the error on Ubuntu so this might be a hint. There's a long-running issue on that topic on github. Basically we get a socket from the operating system with a call to connect(host, port, timeout) in phpredis, but when we do a select(db_index) afterwards, we get an exception. Could there be an issue with persistance? I assume that connect does nothing in the background and select tries to access the connection, which is actually closed. We don't run into a timeout. We tried tuning TIME_WAIT without success. Any other ideas on where the problem might come from? What is the best way to track the issue down? dtrace maybe? Update We are currently looking into our BGSAVE settings. Interestingly it takes half a second and more to create a fork for the process which regularly writes the data to disk (persistence) and maybe redis can't respond to connect() requests during that timespan.

  I have stored some files in the form of blobs on azure and I have written an application that would access these blobs. When I host this application as a web role on azure, it works perfectly and I am happy with that. But now, I wanted to know “what is the query time taken to access each blob file?” I was searching for this through the Microsoft Azure Storage SLA and I found that for GetBlob request type, the maximum processing time should be within the product of 2 seconds multiplied by the number of MBs transferred in processing the request. I am still unclear. What is the actual processing time of my data query? How can I measure it? Can I be able to speed up the processing time? I can understand that the processing time depends on internet speed, location of the data center where my data is being stored, and location of data center where my application is being hosted. But still, will I be able to speed up my query?

• Is strftime (hour) showing wrong time?

  I'm using this line to get the beginning time of the first day of the month. t = Time.now.to_date.beginning_of_month.beginning_of_day When i display this using t.strftime("%A %b %e @ %l:%m %p") it shows: Monday Feb 1 @ 12:02 AM The hour is always 12 (instead of 00), and more wierd the minute changes to match the month in integers. For the February date, it shows 12:02 AM I use .prior_month and .next_month on the variable to move forward or backwards in time. So when I move to June, this would display as Tuesday June 1 @ 12:06 AM But when I just show the value of "t" using a straight t.to_s, I get this time of 00:00:00, which is what I expect: Mon Feb 01 00:00:00 -0700 2010 A similar error occurs using end_of_day, but the hour is always 11 PM and the minute is the same integer value that matches the month in integers, i.e the time is 11:06 PM in June, 11:02 PM in February. Qurky? Admittedly a noob to Rails. Thanks for any comments or explanations.

• Mysql: Convert DB from local time to UTC

  I need to convert an existing (datetime fields) db from local time ut UTC. The values are stored ad datetimes on a server with time zone CET (+1) (with summertime +2). When selecting data I use UNIX_TIMESTAMP(), which magically compensates for everything, ie, time zone shift and dst (if i've read the docs right). I'm moving the db to a new server with UTC as system time. Simply subtracting -1 H won't work, as summer time is +2. Any ideas for a clever way to do this? (using sql or some script lang)

  I've a simple but confusing doubt about whether the program below runs in exponential time. The question is : given a +ve integer as input, print it out. The catch is that you deliberately do this in a loop, like this: int input,output=0; cininput; while(input--) ++output; // Takes time proportional to the value of input cout<< output; I'm claiming that this problem runs in exponential time. Because, the moment you increase the # of bits in input by 1, the program takes double the amount of time to execute. Put another way, to print out log2(input) bits, it takes O(input) time. Is this reasoning right?

  Hello Friends i'm facing a very weird problem in sliverlight 4 + RIA Services, or maybe it's not weird and i'm just a newbie anyway i hope someone here can help, the problem is the following i've created a function on the server side inside the domain service this function is very simple and has a line in it that adds the server current date and time to the database (it's an HR application and employees should sign in and out thrue it each from it's own pc ) Emp.TimeOut = system.DateTime.now (C# syntax) the weird part is that for some users it always adds 3 hours to the current time(exp if he signes out at 5 it shows 8) and for others it works perfectly. the server and all the stations in the company have exactly the same time settings and the same time zone, and anyway my fucntion is on the server side so it should no be realted to the users time. any ideas why this is happening ? i've bin trying to find out why for days now but with no luck

  We have seen a strange issue on some Windows XP machines involving the "Co-ordinated Universal Time" time zone. Not all Windows XP machines seem to have it, but on those that do, the following simple Java program public class TimeTest { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(java.util.TimeZone.getDefault()); System.out.println(new java.util.Date()); } } on JDK 1.6.0_06 prints: sun.util.calendar.ZoneInfo[id="America/Caracas",offset=-16200000,dstSavings=0,useDaylight=false,transitions=5,lastRule=null] Fri Nov 13 05:34:14 VET 2009 (i.e. 4 and a half hours behind GMT). I should add that I am based in London, and have never been to South America. :-) My questions are: Where does Java get this time zone from? I thought Co-ordinated Universal Time was supposed to be the new name for GMT. Why do some Windows machines have this time zone but not others?

Should i create a column that gets date/time of the system when insertion/update happens to the table and then compare the created date/time with the time employee's specified - If so in this case i will have to create date/time column for timeIn, outToLunch, returnFromLunch and timeOut. • R Plot Specify number of time tickmarks

  I was wondering how I could plot more tick marks when plotting time on the x-axis. Basically, a time equivalent to pretty. Pretty obviously doesn't work so well with times, as it uses factors of 1,2,5 and 10. For time one probably wants e.g. hours, half hours, ... plot(as.POSIXct(x,origin="1960-01-01"),y,type="l",xlab="Time") gives really too few and widely spaced tickmarks. zoox<-zoo(y,as.POSIXct(stats$Time,origin="1960-01-01")) plot(zoox) gives the same.   In my Java program, I need to create an instance of the current moment in time. I use Date date = new Date(); This gives me the current date and time as per the host machine's system clock. Is there any way I can get the current date and time from an online server? The world time server perhaps? I have seen this post and it describes what I want but I'm afraid I need more help than what's provided there. In a nutshell, I want to get a date and time that is not dependant on the host machine's system clock. Thanks!

  Newly installed Exchange 2010 box (technically, a partially installed box, as this error is preventing me from completing the install). When I launch EMC or the Management Powershell, I get this error: VERBOSE: Connecting to myserver.mydomain.internal [myserver.mydomain.internal] Processing data from remote server failed with the following error message: The user "mydomain\administrator" isn't assigned to any management roles. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. Failed to connect to any Exchange Server in the current site. Thing is..
