• Getting scp's status bar to appear in a Java window

  I'm writing a program that uses scp to copy files in a bigger java program. As it stands now, the program freezes up while the scp is copying the file, which can take a few minutes, so I'd like to be able to display the progress of the scp or at the very least get the terminal window with the scp progress to show up! Any suggestions?

More specifically, I am doing this: tree = etree.parse('somefile.xml') I am passing this tree around in my program. I was wondering whether this is a good approach, or can I do this: Create a global tree (I come from a C++ background and I know global is bad) Create the tree again wherever required. Or is my approach ok?

• Manually Increasing the Amount of CPU a Java Application Uses

  I've just made a program with Eclipse that takes a really long time to execute. It's taking even longer because it's loading my CPU to 25% only (I'm assuming that is because I'm using a quad-core and the program is only using one core). Is there any way to make the program use all 4 cores to max it out? Java is supposed to be natively multi-threaded, so I don't understand why it would only use 25%.

• Is it possible to deny access to SQL Server from specific programs?

  Currently one of our databases (SQL Server 2008) is accessed via a number of different mechanisms: .Net SqlClient Data Provider; SQL Server Management Studio; various .Net applications and 2007 Microsoft Office system (basically Excel). I see that in the sys.dm_exec_sessions DMV it is possible to see the program name of the program accessing the database for the current sessions. My question is: is it possible for one to deny access from a particular named program? First prize would be if this could be done for any named program, but we would gain a great deal of benefit from being able to deny access to this specific database from all Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel).

  In C++ is there a predefined library function that will return the size of RAM currently available on a computer a program is being run on, at run-time? For instance, if an object is 4bytes, then can we divide the available virtual memory by 4 bytes to give an estimate of how many more objects could be stored by the program safely? I have used the sizeof() function to return the size of objects within my program. Thanks

• C++: Help with cin difference between Linux and Windows

  I have a Win32 console program that I wrote and it works fine. The program takes input from the user and performs some calculations and displays the output - standard stuff. For fun, I am trying to get the program to work on my Fedora box but I am running into an issue with clearing cin when the user inputs something that does not match my variable type. Here is the code in question: void CParameter::setPrincipal() { double principal = 0.0; cout << endl << "Please enter the loan principal: "; cin >> principal; while(principal <= 0) { if (cin.fail()) { cin.clear(); cin.ignore(INT_MAX, '\n'); } else { cout << endl << "Plese enter a number greater than zero. Please try again." << endl; cin >> principal; } } m_Parameter = principal; } This code works in Windows. For example, if the user tries to enter a char data type (versus double) then the program informs the user of the error, resets cin, and allows the user another opportunity to enter a valid value. When I move this code to Fedora, it compiles fine. When I run the program and enter an invalid data type, the while loop never breaks to allow the user to change the input. My questions are; how do I clear cin when invalid data is inputted in the Fedora environment? Also, how should I write this code so it will work in both environments (Windows & Linux)? So I have this program on the MAC but I want two users in my team to be able to use this program, is there any way more than one person can VNC or remote desktop or something to the MAC server? • C++ class is not recognizing string data type

  I'm working on a program from my C++ textbook, and this this the first time I've really run into trouble. I just can't seem to see what is wrong here. Visual Studio is telling me Error: identifier "string" is undefined. I separated the program into three files. A header file for the class specification, a .cpp file for the class implementation and the main program file. These are the instructions from my book: Write a class named Car that has the following member variables: year. An int that holds the car's model year. make. A string that holds the make of the car. speed. An int that holds the car's current speed. In addition, the class should have the following member functions. Constructor. The constructor should accept the car's year and make as arguments and assign these values to the object's year and make member variables. The constructor should initialize the speed member variable to 0. Accessors. Appropriate accessor functions should be created to allow values to be retrieved from an object's year, make and speed member variables. There are more instructions, but they are not necessary to get this part to work. • Are unspecified and undefined behavior required to be consistent between compiles?

  Let's pretend my program contains a specific construct the C++ Standard states to be unspecified behavior. This basically means the implementation has to do something reasonable but is allowed not to document it. But is the implementation required to produce the same behavior every time it compiles a specific construct with unspecified behavior or is it allowed to produce different behavior in different compiles? What about undefined behavior? Let's pretend my program contains a construct that is UB according to the Standard. The implementation is allowed to exhibit any behavior. But can this behavior differ between compiles of the same program on the same compiler with same settings in the same environment? In other words, if I dereference a null pointer on line 78 in file X.cpp and the implementation formats the drive in such case does it mean that it will do the same after the program is recompiled?

My C# WinForm is meant to launch the installer for a program, mainly games, and then be able to detect where that program was installed. Or even if it was installed successfully. Would I have to look in the registery for the location of installed programs? Or is there another way? Thanks for the help!

  I am now trying to use this Application Verifier debugging tool, but i am stuck, first of all: it breaks the program at a line that is simple variable set line (s = 1; for example) Secondly, now when i run this program under debugger, my program seems to have changed its behaviour: i am drawing image, and now one of the colors has changed o_O, all those parts of the image that i dont draw on, has changed the color to #CDCDCD when it should be #000000, and i already set the default color to zero, still it becomes to #CDCDCD. How do i make any sense to this? Here is the output AV gave me: VERIFIER STOP 00000002: pid 0x8C0: Access violation exception. 14873000 : Invalid address causing the exception 004E422C : Code address executing the invalid access 0012EB08 : Exception record 0012EB24 : Context record AVRF: Noncontinuable verifier stop 00000002 encountered.   I have written application which downloads data from a website every 10 mins and writes to a file.Then these files are merged into one file and then R program is run on this merged file to perform sentiment analysis and result is stored in hbase. I want the process of merging files,running R and then storing to HBase to run continuosly on the downloaded data. For running R,we are running R script from java program.We have used Runtime.getRuntime().exec() method to run R program but it doesn't wait for R program to complete and method in the next line starts executing.Using p.waitFor() did not help . What approach should I use to do merge then run R and finally store results in Hbase?Should I use timer class??

  When compiling the below, the program seem to crash. However, there is no error in the compiling process. ... int *x; *x = 3; printf("%d", *x); ... From what I know, this program initializes the pointer *x to an integer value, and subsequently assigns the value of 3 to the deferenced pointer *x. So why does the program crashes? If I do this instead, the program can work normally. ... int *x, y; y = 3; x = &y; printf("%d", *x); ... So, what seems to be the problem with the skipping of the y variable, and instead, assigning the pointer *x directly to an integer value?
