• Detect Browser Refresh vs. Form Submit in ASP.Net MVC 2

  I have an ASP.Net questionnaire application that resubmits data to the same page, showing a different question each time. There are BACK and NEXT buttons to navigate between questions. I would like to detect when the form is submitted due to a browser refresh vs. one of the buttons being pressed. I came across a WebForms approach but don't know how to apply those principals in an MVC 2 application since page events aren't available (as far as I know... I'm pretty new to Microsoft's MVC model). How would one apply that principle to MVC 2? Is there a better way to detect refresh?

• When to use UserControl vs. Control in Silverlight?

  I'm just getting my feet wet in Silverlight, and don't really understand the differences and pros/cons of creating a UserControl vs. creating a Control for the same task (as in when you right click on a selection in Expression Blend, for instance). It seems like selecting "Make Into Control" just creates a new template for the base type you specify, whereas creating a UserControl creates a whole new base class. Is that correct? In this particular instance, I'm creating a custom text box control that only takes numbers, and divides itself into 3 sections, storing 3 values into separate properties as pictured below. In this particular case, which would be best? Update (Additional Question): Why can't I use Template Binding with a UserControl, but I can with a Control? That's one reason I thought that making a UserControl might not be the right decision.

• How do I create interface methods using .tlb types in VS C++?

  Background: The .TLB file contains interfaces written in language 'X'. I don't have .h, .idl, .tlh, or any other header files - just the .TLB file. Language 'X' does not export compatible .h, .idl, etc. I use the VS wizard to add an ATL simple object to my ATL project. I want to add a method to the interface of my simple ATL object that uses one of the .TLB defined types for a parameter. // Something like the following in the .idl file: interface ISomeInterface : IUnknown { HRESULT SomeMethod([in] ITypeFromTLB* aVal); // ITypeFromTLB declared in .TLB file. }; How can I do this? I'm hoping for a wizard, or a line in the .idl interface declaration that would bring in the .tlb information. midl's include (no .tlb), import (no tlb), and importlib (library only) don't seem to provide a solution (I need proxy/stub to be working, so I cannot put this inside the library declaration with the importlib command). Presumably, that should make them available on the classpath when I select the java module that contains "main" and do a "run as" application. What's the problem? I suspect it may be related to 64-bit vs 32-bit VMs....

• "Microsoft DNS Client" vs. getaddrinfo?

  Right now, my application is using the c-ares asynchronous DNS resolver library on Windows below cURL, and I have users complaining that it behaves differently from other windows apps. One particular user said that "other applications are using the Microsoft DNS client" and experiences no problems. cURL itself has an asynchronous DNS implementation that uses getaddrinfo() in a thread. My guess is that would be equivalent behavior to using the "DNS Client" and its host of functions (e.g. DnsQuery?) So, dear Lazyweb, I ask if there is a tangible difference between the behavior of getaddrinfo() vs. using the actual Dns* APIs from the Win32 API.

• Deploying 32 and 64 bit COM objects on 64 bit machine from one VS setup project MSI.

  I have a Shell Namespace Extension C++ COM DLL that must have both a 32 bit and 64 bit version installed on a 64 bit machine, because when 32 bit applications perform a file- open the dialog that is presented is a 32 bit shell. The problem is that both my 32 bit and 64 bit COM objects have the same progid and the VS setup project will throw an error when including two files with the same progid. How do I get around this issue if I want to maintain the same code for both 32 and 64 bit? Currently I just have two different MSI's (32 and 64) and they both must be ran on the 64 bit machine.

• When to use Spring Integration vs. Camel?

  As a seasoned Spring user I was assuming that Spring Integration would make the most sense in a recent project requiring some (JMS) messaging capabilities (more details). After some days working with Spring Integration it still feels like a lot of configuration overhead given the amount of channels you have to configure to bring some request-response (listening on different JMS queues) communications in place.   I recently came across a query that implements a join using just the "JOIN" keyword. On researching I saw that when using a join in SQL without specifying INNER or OUTER, the default is an INNER JOIN. I've never come across this syntax before; all the SQL I've written/read/worked with specifies INNER or some sort of OUTER (LEFT, RIGHT, FULL...). Is there any reason not to rely on the default? Is the plain JOIN widely used? What are the coding standards regarding JOIN vs. INNER JOIN?

• Will more CPUs/cores help with VS.NET build times?

  I was wondering if anyone knew whether Visual Studio .NET had a parallel build process or not? I have a solution with lots of projects, every project has lots of markup/code, lots of types, etc. Just sitting there with intellisense on runs it up to about 700MB. But the build times are really slow and only seem to max out one of my two cpu cores. Does this mean the build process is single threaded? My solution's build dependency chain isn't linear, so I don't see why it couldn't be building some of the projects in parallel. I remember Joel Spolsky blogging about his new SSD, and how it didn't help with compile times, but he didn't mention which compiler he was using. We're using VS 2005. Anyone know how it's compilation works? And is it any different/better in 2008/2010?

• Why is the event object different coming from jquery bind vs. addEventListener

  Why is it when I use the jQuery bind the event object I get back is different from the event object I get back using addEventListener? The event object resulting from this jQuery bind does not have the targetTouches array (among other things) but the event from the addEventListener does. • VS 2010 Class Diagram Error "The type cannot be edited..."

  A few of the classes on a VS 2010 class diagram are displayed with a red title. The Class Details window shows all of the methods, properties, fields and correctly shows no events. However, there's an entry under each of methods, properties, fields and events that states where the name should be: "The type cannot be edited because the source code file contains an error." However, the source file builds with no errors or warnings. Anyone seen this? Any idea how to fix it?

• Changing the namespace for a Web Reference in a Project to be Made Into a VS Project Template

  When I add a web reference to a project, it comes up with a default namespace of: com.wpdevs.myservice. This is the namespace I'd have expected it to use in the application. When I add the using statement to the project, I have to add: using MyProject.com.wpdevs.myservice; I'd like to find a way to eliminate having to reference the project name in the using statement. The project I'm putting together now is destined to be converted into a VS Project template and having that rather strange reference in there, or even having a per-project reference, isn't something I'd like to have in the project.

  I am getting some "ref" vs "out" keyword errors using the sql-net and C# Sqlite combination for windows phone 7.1. Is this due to a wrong combination of libraries that I am using? App Type: Windows Phone 7.1 Using: 1) sql-net Version 1.0.5, Source Nuget thru Visual Studio 2) C# Sqlite for WP7 (wp7sqlite) ( Community.CSharpSqlite.WP7) Version 0.1.1, Source Nuget thru Visual Studio. The exact error I receive is below **Error 5 The best overloaded method match for Community.CsharpSqlite.Sqlite3.sqlite3_open(string, ref Community.CsharpSqlite.Sqlite3.sqlite3)' has some invalid arguments C:\Dev\Learning\SQLite.cs Line:2492 Column: 29 ** The next error then hints that it is related to the parameter being passed as "out" type instead of "ref" type. Error 6 Argument 2 must be passed with the 'ref' keyword C:\Dev\Learning\SQLite.cs Line: 2492 Column: 64 I can make the compile errors go away by replacing the "out" keyword with the "ref" keyword, but that is likely to lead to other issues.   Obviously it will vary depending on the compiler you use, but I'm curious as to the performance issues when doing vector<vector<largeObject>> vs. vector<vector<largeObject>*>, especially in c++. In specific: let's say that you have the outer vector full, and you want to start inserting elements into first inner vector. How will that be stored in memory if the outer vector is just storing pointers, as apposed to storing the whole inner vector. Will the whole outer vector have to be moved to gain more space, or will the inner vector be moved (assuming that space wasn't pre-allocated), causing problems with the outer vector? Thank you

  Hi there, my problem occurs during compiling Irrlicht3D Engine in VS 2008. 1Error 1256: integer overflow in internal computation due to size or complexity of "irr::IReferenceCounted" I'm currently merging a very old Softwaredriver I have written with the rest of the engine which is much newer. The main Problme is that I have tried to resolve abstract inherince problems. But now I get this error and it is the only one. "irr::IReferenceCounted" is one of the base classes used by other classes which have been inherinced from. What does that mean? I know that an integer overflow can be a normal overflow, but why is this shown during compilation? Any help appreciated! -db

• Why do Java/C# edge out C++ as the recommended language to learn OOP on S.O?

  I noticed after reading the answers/discussion to this question (What is the best language to learn OOP on?) - that more and more people are recommending C# or Java over C++ to learn OOP on. A simple term search on that answer page results in 10 hits for C++, 21 for C# and 27 for Java. Now, I understand that these 2 languages fix a lot of quirks and issues with C++, and looked up these resources that relate mostly to performance, JVM vs native implementation, systems focus vs applications, manual memory management vs automated et al. My question is - are there any fundamental differences in the OO capabilities of Java/C# vs C++? Or are the former recommended purely due to their generic ease of use/improvements over the latter? Thanks. PS, I'm aware of Java interface inheritance vs C++ multiple inheritance as a difference. I would consider that an implementational one rather than functional.

• ASP.NET MVC v1 project upgraded to VS 2010 no longer will debug. Why?

  I'm getting the message "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document." I have a S#arp Architecture project (ASP.NET MVC v1) that has been opened and upgraded to be used in VS 2010. I can no longer debug the project. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. I have IE set to be my default browser. I have the build set to debug. System.Web.Mvc is referenced in my project's lib dir. I've cleaned the solution. I've recompiled the solution. It's set to use .NET Framework 3.5. PDBs are being created and dropped into the bin directory with the DLLs. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  I just did some testing for Int PK join Vs Guid PK. Tables structure and number of records looking like that: Performance of CRUD operations using EF4 are pretty similar in both cases. As we know Int PK has better performance rather than strings. So SQL server execution plan with INNER JOINS are pretty different Here is an execution plan. As i understand according with execution plan from attached image Int join has better performance because it is taking less resources for Clustered index scan and it is go in two ways, am i right?   In my project I have it set up so that all the tables in the DB has the property "id" and then I have the entity objects inherit from the EntityBase class using a repository pattern. I then set the inheritance modifier for "id" property in the dbml file o/r designer to "overrides" Public MustInherit Class EntityBase MustOverride Property id() As Integer End Class Public MustInherit Class RepositoryBase(Of T As EntityBase) Protected _Db As New DataClasses1DataContext Public Function GetById(ByVal Id As Integer) As T Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault End Function End Class Partial Public Class Entity1 Inherits EntityBase End Class Public Class TestRepository Inherits RepositoryBase(Of Entity1) End Class the line Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault however produces the error "Class member EntityBase.id is unmapped" when i use VS 2010 using the 4.0 framework but I never received that error with the old one. The table is small and does not contain any data that needs to be stored on disk. So I ask which is faster: InnoDB or MEMORY (HEAP)? My thoughts are: Both engines will probably serve SELECTs directly from memory, as even InnoDB will cache the whole table. What about the UPDATEs? (innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit?) My main concern is the locking behavior: InnoDB row lock vs. MEMORY table lock. Will this present the bottleneck in the MEMORY implementation? Thanks for your thoughts!

• Visual Studio 2008\Backup Files folder created when every new VS instance is opened.

  Hi, I think I have something broken with the path that VS 2008 saves the backup files. Since few days, it creates a new "Visual Studio 2008" directory in the same folder that my .sln file exists. Then, after the time of the first auto-save expires, the backup files are being saved to this folder. I browsed the tools-options dialog but I haven't found a way to set the directory to by static: C:\documents and setings\\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Backup Files. Can anybody point me with the right solution to this problem (probably the correct registry entry - I guess) ? thanks

• Turbogears 2 vs Django - any advice on choosing replacement for Turbogears 1?

  I have been using Turbogears 1 for prototyping small sites for the last couple of years and it is getting a little long in the tooth. Any suggestions on making the call between upgrading to Turbogears 2 or switching to something like Django? I'm torn between the familiarity of the TG community who are pretty responsive and do pretty good documentation vs the far larger community using Django. As I recall back in .net 1.1 we used to use that with a tool call ndoc, but I can't find much about ndoc and VS 2008 express.
