• Running Emacs on Multiple TTYs in screen

  When working with EMACS over SSH, is there any way to spawn a new frame of the same emacs session on a different terminal? In my use case, I have screen running, so I have multiple terminals, and can recover which pseudo terminal they're attached to with pts. Suppose I have two "windows" (in GNU screen parlance). The first one is attached to /dev/pts/12 and the second one is attached to /dev/pts/13. I launch emacs on the first window. Is there any way for me to start a new frame of the same session on the second window? I've been playing with passing arguments to make-frame but it seems that the usage that allows me to specify a terminal requires that a terminal object already exists, and I can't see any way to create a new terminal object.

  When I compare a dir in DOSBox 0.74 against a dir from Windows 7 command prompt, the 8.3 filenames differ. • Why do most routers not include local DNS?

  I need to change my firewall/router, and I'd prefer something with built-in DNS to resolve queries on the local subnets. I've got a mixed Linux/Windows system, often with only one computer turned on, and I frequently have problems resolving local names. I don't want to keep a Linux box permanently on just for DNS, and I'd prefer to have DNS in my router appliance, which is always on. I search Google for this occasionally but never find anything. You always get the obvious answers - it's not possible, put everything in /etc/hosts, NetBIOS, dedicated box, etc. So what am I missing? Why don't "cheap" routers let you do this? I'm pretty sure that Cisco kit does this. Almost all cheap routers will let you do MAC address reservation, to let them assign static IP addresses for DHCP. So why can't they simply do DNS as well for everything on the local subnets, just passing through remote domains to the ISP?

• dpkg -S not showing all files in package

  I've been using dpkg -S <package_name> to list the contents of a package. Sometimes I pipe to grep bin to quickly scan for executables. I just ran into a case where this didn't work out for me: $ which virtualenv $ sudo apt-get install python-virtualenv Reading package lists... Done ... Setting up python-virtualenv (1.7.1.2-1) ... $ which virtualenv /usr/bin/virtualenv $ dpkg -S /usr/bin/virtualenv python-virtualenv: /usr/bin/virtualenv $ dpkg -S python-virtualenv | grep bin $ /usr/bin/virtualenv seems to be provided by python-virtualenv, but isn't listed in the package contents provided by dpkg -S. All the while, passing /usr/bin/virtualenv to dpkg -S returns that the file comes from python-virtualenv. Can you all explain this?

• Outlook 2010 reminders keep popping up even if closed

  Today when I got to work and started my computers I got a event reminder for my last events last friday. I closed the reminder, but perhaps 10 minutes later it pops up again, and another 10 minutes later it popped up yet again. As the day is passing all my reminders for this day is added to the list of reminders that keep popping up 10 minutes after that they are closed. I've tried both the repair function in Windows Control Panel -- E-mail and the scanpst.exe program, but none of them solved the problem. I've tried outlook.exe /cleansniff and outlook.exe /cleanreminders, but that didn't help either. Reading on the net there seem to be some reports with this for reoccuring calendar events, but my affected events are one-timers. How can I get the closed reminders to stay closed? Update: I noticed that I have 282 drafts of the meetings that I keep getting reminders of.

• Unable to use autossh in background even with absolute path

  I would love to set autossh to run at boot adding it to /etc/rc.local. This command works: autossh -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa -R 2522:localhost:22 user@address But, if I add the -f option autossh -f -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa -R 2522:localhost:22 user@address The ssh session is not started.   I need to process an SVN working copy in a PS script, but I have trouble passing arguments to functions.   I need to start up mysqld with command line options as from here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/server-options.html#option_mysqld_skip-grant-tables I normally do sudo service mysqld start, but passing the option as sudo service mysqld start --skip-grant-tables does not seem to work.   I am using IE8 to open a sharepoint portal on local network. Initially, I clicked on remember password after passing domain credentials. However, now I want sharepoint to ask credentials again. I've tried many options - Deleted all cookies, IE Security Tab Form Autocomplete Deleted everything. Restarted my machine. And all I could do. Still, when I open portal, sharepoint logs me in automatically. What should I do to make IE ask for credentials again?

• Multiple IPs from one router

  I would like to know if it is possible (and if so, how) to configure a router running dd-wrt (or openwrt) to supply connected devices with two ip addresses. The network looks like this: [Internet] | [Router] | | [Comp1] [Comp2] ... My ISP provides me with enough public IP adresses to give all devices on my network one each. The easiest way to set that up is to just use the router as a switch. This will however lead to problems with some LAN based applications. I would still like to use Samba-shares between the computers as well as a vpn server. What I am looking for basically is if it is possible to use the router as a DHCP server for a local network (let's say giving IP adresses 192.168.1.xx to connected computers) while at the same time passing through public IP addresses to each as well?

• How to work around Windows error 8x90070057?

  So today I was trying to copy a simple .PDF file from a local folder on my machine to a network folder and every time I tried to move the file I would get an error dialog box which would state that I was passing a wrong parameter and give me the error code of 8x90070057. Does anyone know of a way to work around this error so that I can get this file copied? I have tried renaming the file with an underscore in front. I have tried copying from my local folder to my desktop and then to the remote folder. I have tried hunting down anything that might be using the file. An example of the file name is: Flowers & Trees.pdf

• Mount cifs share anonymously

  I have a Windows 2003 Server sharing out a few folders as read-only to "Everyone". The server is a domain member, so I'm not able to connect to the share on computers that aren't on the domain without passing some form of credentials. I have a linux box that I want to mount the share on at startup, so I want to put the share mountpoint in fstab. I have this setup by specifying a credentials file that is only readable by root, but I would rather either not use a credentials file or specify some guest/anonymous user. Can I do that, & if so, how?

• Using cssh with an ssh clone

  Just had a quick question about using ClusterSSH(cssh) with a homegrown ssh-like/ssh-clone application which we use internally to connect to remote machines. I tried using the ssh = /path/to/ssh_clone override in $HOME/.csshrc or /etc/csshrc (or even passing it via -C). Unfortunately running cssh with debug shows that it is still trying to connect to the remote machines as ssh -l user machine_ip instead of ssh_clone -l user machine_ip. Any thoughts/suggestions on how to work around this would be greatly appreciated. TIA. Edit: Version info $ cssh -v Version: 4.01_02

• Controlling TV Channel Through Computer

  I'm passing my TV input through my computer so that I can use the video stream in an application I'm creating which then outputs to my TV. E.g. Sky Digibox/FreeView box - Laptop - TV Where on my laptop I'll be using the stream in a WPF application so I can overlay XAML objects onto it. My question is, what would be the best way for me to send the signal back to the box to say change the channel for example? I don't want to have to use the remote, I want the computer to handle everything. Is there a standard cable these boxes have that could take what would normally be a remote control signal and use that as input instead? Or would I have to go down the route of looking at some sort of Infared LED to send the signal recreating the remote? Apologies if this is not clear enough, let me know and I'll try and be more precise.

• Adding Command-Line Switches To Windows Shortcuts

  Is there a way to, in general, create a Windows shortcut to a file and instruct Windows to pass certain switches to the application before passing the filename? For example: I have an Excel file, abc.xlsx. If I want to create a shortcut to open this file read-only, I would change the target to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /r abc.xlsx, but this fails when another person on my network opens the shortcut and their EXCEL.EXE is not in that same folder. Surely there's a way to tell Windows to pass the /r switch without supplying the path/filename of the application that is supposed to open the file?

  I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports.   i am receiving the follwing error when i am invoking a custom object "Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'." Following is the scenario when i am getting the error i am invoking a method in a dll dynamically. Load an assembly CreateInstance.... calling MethodInfo.Invoke() passing int, string as a parameter for my method is working fine = No exceptions are thrown. But if I try and pass a one of my own custom class objects as a parameter, then I get an ArgumentException exception, and it is not either an ArgumentOutOfRangeException or ArgumentNullException. "Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'." I am doing this in a web application. The class file containing the method is in a different proj . also the custom object is a sepearte class in the same file. there is no such thing called a static aseembly in my code. I am trying to invoke a webmethod dynamically. this webmethod is having the customObject type as an input parameter. So when i invoke the webmethod i am dynamically creating the proxy assembly and all. From the same assembly i am trying to create an instance of the cusotm object assinging the values to its properties and then passing this object as a parameter and invoking the method. everything is dynamic and nothing is created static.. :( add reference is not used. • How to have struct members accessible in different ways

  I want to have a structure token that has start/end pairs for position, sentence, and paragraph information. I also want the members to be accessible in two different ways: as a start/end pair and individually. Given: struct token { struct start_end { int start; int end; }; start_end pos; start_end sent; start_end para; typedef start_end token::*start_end_ptr; }; I can write a function, say distance(), that computes the distance between any of the three start/end pairs like: int distance( token const &i, token const &j, token::start_end_ptr mbr ) { return (j.*mbr).start - (i.*mbr).end; } and call it like: token i, j; int d = distance( i, j, &token::pos ); that will return the distance of the pos pair. But I can also pass &token::sent or &token::para and it does what I want. Hence, the function is flexible. However, now I also want to write a function, say max(), that computes the maximum value of all the pos.start or all the pos.end or all the sent.start, etc. If I add: typedef int token::start_end::*int_ptr; I can write the function like: int max( list<token> const &l, token::int_ptr p ) { int m = numeric_limits<int>::min(); for ( list<token>::const_iterator i = l.begin(); i != l.end(); ++i ) { int n = (*i).pos.*p; // NOT WHAT I WANT: It hard-codes 'pos' if ( n > m ) m = n; } return m; } and call it like: list<token> l; l.push_back( i ); l.push_back( j ); int m = max( l, &token::start_end::start ); However, as indicated in the comment above, I do not want to hard-code pos. I want the flexibility of accessible the start or end of any of pos, sent, or para that will be passed as a parameter to max(). I've tried several things to get this to work (tried using unions, anonymous unions, etc.) but I can't come up with a data structure that allows the flexibility both ways while having each value stored only once. Any ideas how to organize the token struct so I can have what I want? Attempt at clarification Given struct of pairs of integers, I want to be able to "slice" the data in two distinct ways: By passing a pointer-to-member of a particular start/end pair so that the called function operates on any pair without knowing which pair. The caller decides which pair. By passing a pointer-to-member of a particular int (i.e., only one int of any pair) so that the called function operates on any int without knowing either which int or which pair said int is from. The caller decides which int of which pair. Another example for the latter would be to sum, say, all para.end or all sent.start. Also, and importantly: for #2 above, I'd ideally like to pass only a single pointer-to-member to reduce the burden on the caller. Hence, me trying to figure something out using unions.

• Segfault on copy constructor for string

  I'm getting a segfault on a line where I'm creating a c++ string with the copy constructor. I've looked at some of the similar issues, but they're all due to passing in a bad c++ string object. I'm just passing in a raw string, so I'm not sure what my issue is. I'll paste the relevant snippets of code (it's taken from several different files, so it might look a bit jumbled). The segfault occurs in the 4th line of the default constructor for the Species class.
