• Upgraded to Mountain Lion, now 127.0.0.1 is not resolving

  I used to be able to type 127.0.0.1 (or my network IP 10.10.53.32) and it would resolve to my "default" virtual host. 127.0.0.1/~Shanimal and shanimal.dev both resolve to their appropriate folders. localhost and 127.0.0.1 give me a 404 - "Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server." • Pinned program on the taskbar is not grouping in Windows 7 Ultimate

  Previously, I had pinned Google Chrome Dev to the taskbar. Being that it was unstable and crashed frequently, I decided to uninstall it. Before uninstalling, however, I did not un-pin its icon from the taskbar. Afterward, I installed Google Chrome Stable and launched it from the old pinned icon. This resulted in a new icon appearing in the taskbar. I figured this happened because the icon was originally for the Dev build, so I unpinned the icon and re-pinned Google Chrome. I launch Google Chrome again, but I still get a new icon! Re-pinning the icon should have fixed it, no? Why aren't my Google Chrome windows grouping together?

• How should a small team using multiple OS's deploy over github?

  We have a small development team that have recently moved to using github to host our projects. The team consists of three developers, 2 on Windows and 1 on Mac. I am currently researching the best way to deploy applications to our Linux servers (dev and production). Capistrano running locally would be ideal but from what I read this won't work for Windows machines. It looks like the best way is to use a post-receive hook in github, I can see how this would work for auto deploying to dev, but I don't see how we could then deploy to live. I have found paid projects like http://www.deployhq.com/ but it feels like something that a quick bit of code should be able to do for free, I just can't seem to get myself pointed in the right direction! I was wondering what would be considered best practice for small team deployment involving multiple local OS's and github.

• Setting up central git repo on local Mac network

  We are a team of three, all working on our local machines on the same internal network. We will all be working on websites in local working copies of the same Git repo hosted on Github. We have an internal staging machine here (dev.internal), and I am looking for a way for us to be able to push to this machine. At each milestone in the development cycle. In essence, all I really want us to be able to do is add the dev.internal machine as a remote, and push to this whenever we are ready. Could somebody please point me in the right direction to get this set up?

• Has anyone found a (eg bash) shell terminal for Windows as good as the OS X one?

  I am mostly using 'git-bash' which came with the Windows install of Git vcs. I think it is the same one that comes with Cygwin. It works fine technically but the UI sucks: have to right-click the title bar and go to Properties to change the window width most annoyingly... copy and paste and highlight with the mouse are equally cumbersome In contrast, the Terminal app that comes with OS X manages these with aplomb and makes it so much more comfortable to work with. You can even drag and drop a file on it and it will paste the file path in at your cursor! I have also tried: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win-bash http://www.steve.org.uk/Software/bash/ http://www.hamiltonlabs.com/cshell.htm None of these do copy and paste of text without cumbersome right-clicking. I am specifically looking for a Unix-flavoured shell in Windows so I don't have to use different shells between my home dev (Windows), the live server (Linux) or dev at the office (Mac). Yes I have Googled and haven't found one yet...

After installing Windows, I want to recover my hard drive MBR to be able to load Ubuntu. • Possible to run system-config-network during %post kickstart?

  Hello, I'm currently trying to figure out a smart way to set IP, hostname, gateway and DNS settings during a kickstart (with user input during the kickstart). Doing this with firstboot after the install is not acceptable, so this must be done during %post. I've tried to run the system-config-network tool during post in tty6: #!/bin/sh chvt 6 exec < /dev/tty6 > /dev/tty6 /usr/bin/system-config-network-tui This doesn't work since for some reason I'm unable to catch user input. I would prefer to use built in tools to change this during post, rather than write my own bash script to do this, since using the provided tools is less likely to break anything. Does someone done anything like this or similar, and made it work? Thanks

  I'm trying to incorporate some code from Programming an RTS Game With Direct3D into my game. Before anyone says it, I know the book is kinda old, but it's the particle effects system he creates that I'm trying to use. I know this has something to do with the character set, and my program was already running with a Unicode Character set on the go. I read that to solve the above problem, I need to switch to a multi-byte character set. But, if I do that, I get other errors in my code, like so: Error 2 error C2664: 'D3DXCreateEffectFromFileA' : cannot convert parameter 2 from 'const wchar_t *' to 'LPCSTR' With it being accredited to the following line of code: if(FAILED(D3DXCreateEffectFromFile(m_pD3DDevice9,effectFileName.c_str(),NULL,NULL,0,NULL,&m_pCurrentEffect,&pErrorBuffer))) This if is nested within another if statement checking my effectmap list. Though it is the FAILED word with the red line. Like wise I get the another error with the following line of code: wstring effectFileName = TEXT("Sky.fx"); With the error message being: Error 1 error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from 'const char [7]' to 'std::basic_string<_Elem,_Traits,_Ax' If I change it back to a Uni code character set, I get the original (fewer) errors. Leaving as a multi-byte, I get more errors. Does anyone know of a way I can fix this issue?

  When I connect my 3G USB Modem to my laptop with 12.04, nothing shows up in Network-Manager. This modem is working in 11.10 and the modem is shown in Network-Manager but not in 12.04 !! • Getting beyond basic web programming languages. How to be awesome?

  I'm a web developer that's done a bunch of projects using PHP, JQuery/JS, Mysql using PhPMyAdmin, CSS, HTML and a tiny bit of XML. Basically lots of work with CMS's and freehand coding. I'm looking to take things to the next level. I've done a lot of freelance and small contract work, but I'm dying to excel. I'm tired of acting as tech support for all these "non-tech" companies that barely know how to use their own computers..."really, you didn't think to backup your files before switching to a new server??". Think of potential employers as amazon, netflix, twitter, google, etc. I don't necessarily want to work for these guys specifically, but potentially organizations like this. I could be wrong, but I feel like a big company like this would laugh at me if I interviewed. For example, how helpful is knowing Ruby, SQL (commands without interface), C++, API's, Oracle, Java, debugging, qa, etc? (I realize this is a very random list). I use Notepad ++, but have heard that the bigger boys use IDE interfaces. I'm not really interested in building desktop apps, only web related stuff. I feel like I've reached my potential and want to really take it up a notch. I see a lot of projects on GitHub and I'm amazed at what people have created. Note - my degree is in economics but I've done web dev since high school. I definitely wish I took more comp sci/programming courses in college. I'm 27 and want to be awesome at web dev before it's too late. Not just decent. Any advice? Book suggestions? Thanks

  When adding new team memebers... off set the ramp up time by 1) having pre built machines ready and and easy method of getting the lastest tools, code base etc. I'm fortunate enough to be at a client that has a machine ready built and loaded when the dev arrives, all they have to do is grab the code. 2) have tasks broken down so that dependencies are as minimal as possible. In other words, to over come the mythical man month issue (as recently mentioned on slashdot) make sure the tasks you hand out have few dependencies on each other. That way the new dev is able to be productive fairly quickly. Here's our historical lead time... the bump in Jan is due to added work, by 2/18 we had added 4 new people over the last two weeks. And amazing the time starts coming down: Here's our averag work time: again time ramps up as we are adding more tasks, but then starts inching back down through out Feb and March. It's not that we beat the Mythical Man Month, and in fact I still believe the book and idea are highly relevant. But if you can break the tasks down and reduce the dependencies between the task then you can mitigate the effect. The tool used in this case is from AgileZen.com and some of the wild swings are due to inexperience with the system initially... but our average times as measured by the tool are matching real life. Also the tool appearst to measure in 24 hour days and 7 day weeks. so it isn't as bad as it looks. :-)

• NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? • Roadshow Microsoft – Primeira Parada: Londrina, PR

  Hoje (23/03) tivemos aqui em Londrina a primeira parada do Roadshow Microsoft, com apresentação de diversos produtos com aplicação em cenários técnicos. Como já é de costume, o evento reuniu alguns dos melhores profissionais de DEV e INFRA, com informações extremamente úteis sobre .NET Framework 4, Entity Framework, Exchange, Sharepoint, entre outras tecnologias e produtos. Na minha visão, o evento conseguiu atender a expectativa dos participantes, através dos cenários técnicos criados para a ficticia Adventure Works (acho que eu conheço esta empresa… :). Através da participação ativa de todos, as tracks de DEV e INFRA tiveram o sucesso aparente no comentário do pessoal nos intervalos e almoço. Depois das palestras, lá por 19h, tivemos um jantar com o pessoal da Microsoft e influenciadores da região, onde, até as 21h, discutimos muita coisa (até Commerce Server!). Esta aproximação com o time de comunidades da Microsoft, além de alguns “penetras” como o próprio Alex disse, é extremamente importante e útil, visto que passamos conhecemos a fundo as intenções e futuras ações da Microsoft visando as comunidades locais. Para concluir, algo que sempre digo: participe de alguma comunidade técnica da sua região. Entre em contato com influenciadores, conheça os grupos de usuários perto de você e não perca tempo. Ter o conhecimento perto de você, contribuir e crescer profissionalmente não tem preço. • How do I install GRUB on a RAID system installation?

  I'm trying to setup and install Ubuntu on a RAID 1 setup. I have two disks, sdb and sdc. I've been following this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID which more or less works for getting everything set up and Ubuntu installed. The problem is at the end of the installation, it tries to install GRUB. By default it tries my "first disk", which gives a "fatal error". I've tried installing it on a specific partion, e.g. sdb1 as well as RAID devices, e.g. md0, md1, etc.. Nothing seems to work. Edit: The actual error is "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sdb Executing 'grub-install '/dev/sdb' failed. This is a fatal error." Then I'm taken back to the main install menu. If I choose "Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk" option, I can pick the partition, but entering sdb2 or md1 gives the same error. So I went ahead an just didn't install GRUB, which means now I presumably have a working Ubuntu installation, but I can't boot it. I've tried booting from the LiveCD to install GRUB, but I can't chroot into my system because it doesn't seem to recognize that my disk is a Linux disk. There's an error about it being a RAID partition. So basically I would really like to know how you know to which device to install GRUB at installation, or at the very least, how to install it on to my system now. I suppose I should also mention that sda is a Windows 7 installation that I would like to keep around and be able to access at boot. Thanks for any help.

• very long boot up with Ubuntu 10.04.4

  I installed Ubuntu 10.04.3 on Atom. Then I do the update and upgrade with: #apt-get update #apt-get upgrade #apt-get dist-upgrade The system can boot up now but in almost 2 minutes. After power on and system test, it will stop at "Verifying DMI pool data" for 10 seconds before the GRUB menu comes up. Then after the choosing of one item, to the start up of OS there is 100 seconds of black screen. The start up after that is normal and the operations in the system is also normal. I am concerned with if it is of hardware problem, or just some problem with the kernel. Also I want to know after "Verifying DMI pool data" what is done? And after we choose an item in GRUB menu, what does the system do? And where can I see the procedure of the whole boot up? • RAID5 over LVM on Ubuntu Server 12.04.3

  I'm trying to create a RAID5 software array using LVM. I use VirtualBox as I'm only learning how LVM works. So I've created 4 virtual SCSI drives and then did the following: pvcreate /dev/sd[b-e] vgcreate /dev/sd[b-e] raid5_vg lvcreate --type raid5 -i 3 -L 1G -n raid_lv raid5_vg However, I get an error after the last command: WARNING: Unrecognised segment type raid5 Using default stripesize 64.00 KiB Rounding size (256 extents) up to stripe boundary size (258 extents) Cannot update volume group raid5_vg with unknown segments in it! So it looks like raid5 is not a valid segment type. "lvm segtypes" also doesn't contain 'raid5' entry: root@ubuntu-lvm:~# lvm segtypes striped zero error free snapshot mirror So my question is - how could I create RAID5 logical volume using LVM only? It seems that it is possible, I saw a few references (not for Ubuntu, unfortunately) for RedHat and Gentoo systems. I don't want to use mdadm for now, until I find out that it is mandatory. • How can I transfer files to a Kindle Fire with a Micro-USB cable?

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10, and when I connect my Kindle Fire to my computer via micro usb, it is not recognized automatically. Other usb devices, such as my ipod and digital camera, are recognized just fine. It does not appear to be a usb power issue, since the Kindle Fire wakes up from sleeping when it is plugged in. I never get the message on the Kindle telling me it is ready to accept files from the computer, though. • Add physical disk to KVM virtual machine

  I'm setting up a file server (nas4free) as a KVM virtual machine on a Ubuntu Server 12.04 system. How do I add physical hard drives directly to the VM so they can be used by the guest (nas4free), but not the host? Specifically the hard drive I'd like to mount is /dev/sda (which is not currently mounted on the server.) So far I've found two solutions but I haven't gotten either to work. The first is from Server Fault where it's suggested to use virt-manager. I haven't gotent this to work because when I try to select an existing drive nothing is being listed. My best guess as to why this is, is because I'm using virt-manager over ssh and not connecting as root, should that make a difference? The second solution I've found here is to just run the command (modified for my system) qm set nas4free -virtio /dev/sda but that seems to require proxmox which I don't have installed and doesn't seem to be in the default repositories? Finally, once the above is sorted out and I can mount the drive directly to the VM, does anyone have an experience with whether the drive should be mounted to the VM as scsi, ide, or virtio? (I know virtio was recommend in the linked ServerFault page, but I hadn't heard of it before now since I mainly use VMWare). Thanks for your help!!!
