  When working remotely, our team only has access to our source code by remote desktop into our office PCs so we never really work in offline mode. Does a distributed version control system like Mercurial or Git still give us advantages over our current centralized Subversion set up? If so, what are they? Are there any drawbacks or pitfalls? I've read in numerous places that shifting to distributed version control requires a change in thinking. Can someone explain what needs to change in this regard?

• Fastest way to deploy rails apps with Passenger

  I am working on a Dreamhost server with Rails 2.3.5. Every time I make changes to a site, I have to ssh into the site, remove all the files, upload a zip file containing all the new files for the site, unzip that file, migrate the database, and go. Something tells me there's a faster way to deploy rails apps. I am using mac Time Machine to keep track of different versions of my applications. I know git tracks files, but I don't really know how to work with it to deploy my applications, since passenger takes care of all the magic for me. What would be a faster way to deploy my applications (and avoid the downtime associated with my method when I delete all files on the server)? Thanks!

• ASP Force Download

  In PHP I can do: header("Content-type: application/octet-stream") and then anything that I output is downloaded instead of showing in the browser. Is there a similar way to do this in ASP? I have seen about all the file streaming and such using ADODB.Stream, but that doesn't seem to work for me and always requires another file to load the content from. Bit of an ASP noob, so go easy on me. :p All I want to do is have a script that outputs a CSV and that will force download instead of showing in the browser. • Renaming files: Visual Studio vs Version control

  The problem with renaming files is that if you want to take advantage of Visual Studio refactoring, you really need to do it from inside Visual Studio. But most (not all*) version control system also want to be the ones doing the renaming. One solution is to use integrated source control, but this is not always available, and in some cases is pretty clunky. I'd personally be more comfortable using source control separately, outside of Visual Studio, but I'm not sure how to manage this question of file renames. So, for those of you that use Visual Studio, which source control do you use? Do you use a VS integration (which one?) and otherwise, how do you resolve this renaming problem? (* git is smart enough to work it out for itself)

  Question from a first-time Jenkins user. So I hope you wouldn't mind if the question is too silly. I have installed jenkins on a Ubuntu machine, and is accessible at localhost:8080. I have successfully configured it to work with Maven2 and Git as well. Next, I created a job/project (A Java/Spring application), and got it to build without error on Jenkins as well. • Building FFmpeg for Android

  I've spent almost a week on this now, trying to get FFmpeg "Angel" to build for Android. I've tried build scripts from all over the internet to no avail. I got closest was using this. A sthe author himself says the script doesn't work for newer versions of FFmpeg due to this bug, which has been dismissed on that ticket saying "I found a Makefile that does it." This was dis-heartening, being the only post on all of the cast Google world that was anywhere close to my problem. So, question time: Is there a way to get around the above bug? I'm trying to use the newest ffmpeg API, and "Love" is just giving me "undefined reference" errors while trying to use av_encode_video2(), and av_free_frame(). The code I was working on the lines of is at the ffmpeg git repo, under /doc/examples/decoding_encoding.c (the function starting on line 338)

• iPhone toolbar shared by multiple views

  Another iPhone noob question. The app I'm building needs to show a shared custom UIToolbar for multiple views (and their subviews) within a UITabBarController framework. The contents of the custom toolbar are the same across all the views. I'd like to be able to design the custom toolbar as a xib and handle UI events from its own controller class (I'm assuming I can subclass UIToolbar to do so?). That way I could define IBOutlet & IBAction items, etc. Then I could associate this custom toolbar with eachs of the UITabBarController views (and their subviews). But I'm having trouble finding out whether that's possible - and if so, how to do it. In particular, I want to be able to push new views onto UINavigationControllers that are each associated with parent UITabBarController tabs. So, to summarize, I want a: custom toolbar shared by multiple views which are managed by multiple navigation controllers and the navigation controllers are associated with different tabs of a parent tab bar controller The tab bar controller itself is launched modally, though I don't believe that's relevant. Anyway, the tab bar controller is working, as are its child navigation controllers. I'm just having a little trouble figuring out how to persist the shared toolbar to the various subviews. I'd settle for a good clean way of implementing programmatically... though I'd prefer the flexibility of keeping the toolbar's visual design in a xib. Anyone have any suggestions?

• Reduce Heroku Compiled Slug Size

  I've just updated rails to v2.3.6 on my app under a bamboo-ree-1.8.7 stack and the compiled slug size has grown up to 40.5Mb! Previous to that last git push, the slug size was about 20Mb and was using rails v2.3.5. Is it because my slug has both of rails versions installed? Probably I'm missing something but I haven't added any special code/files into my app as to increase the slug size by ~20Mb. Can you point me on how can I reduce the slug size? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

  Hi, I have a project that i need to compile number of cities in each state and make an insert statement for mysql database. I think the easiest way to do it is via python but since i m a complete noob i would like to reach out all the python gurus here. Here is what the input looks like. Example below is for Florida. cities = ['Boca Raton', 'Boynton Beach', 'Bradenton', 'Cape Coral', 'Deltona'] and this what the output should be. INSERT INTO `oc_locations` (`idLocation`, `name`, `idLocationParent`, `friendlyName`) VALUES (1, 'Florida', 0, 'Florida'), (2, 'Boca Raton', 1, 'Boca Raton'), (3, 'Boynton Beach', 1, 'Boynton Beach'), (4, 'Bradenton', 1, 'Bradenton'), (5, 'Cape Coral', 1, 'Cape Coral'), (6, 'Deltona', 1, 'Deltona'), If you look at carefully the "idLocationParent" for "Florida" value is "0" so which means it is a top level value. This will be done for 50 states so ability to plug the state name into the mysql statement would be icing on the cake if there is a easy way to do it. Also alphabetical order and auto increment for the idLocation would be great. • Internal loop only runs once, containing loop runs endlessly

  noob question I'm afraid. I have a loop that runs and rotates the hand of a clock and an internal loop that checks the angle of the hand if it is 90, 180, 270 and 360. On these 4 angles the corresponding div is displayed and its siblings removed. The hand loops and loops eternally, which is what I want, but the angle check only runs the loop once through the whole 360. As the hand passes through the angles it is correctly displaying and removing divs but is doesn't continue after the first revolution of the clock. I've obviously messed up somewhere and there is bound to be a more efficient way of doing all this. I am using jQueryRotate.js for my rotations. • Can't find momd file: Core Data problems

  Aw geez! I screwed something up! I'm a Core Data noob, working on my first iOS app. After much Stack Overflowing I'm using this code: NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"CoreData" ofType:@"momd"]; if (!path) { path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"CoreData" ofType:@"mom"]; } NSAssert(path != nil, @"Unable to find Resource in main bundle"); CoreData is the name of my app. I've tried to put in initial data into the app by finding the path to the sqlite file in my iPhone simulator, and then going and inserting into that sqlite file. But at some point, I moved the sqlite (thinking it would create a fresh copy), deleted the app from the simulator, and the sqlite file is gone. I'm not sure if I'm leaving out some part of the process (this was a few hours ago) but the end result is that everything is screwed up. How do I resubstantiate this sqlite / momd file? "Clean" and "Clean all targets" are grayed out. I'm happy to post the relevant code from my app that would help shed some light on this problem but there's tons of code relating to Core Data which I don't understand, so I'm not sure what part to post! Any help is greatly appreciated.

  i am new to WPF so maybe this will be "noob" question but i can't find answer to it (and it seems so easy)... well i am programing WPF app and i want to use smth similar to css for webpages, so i found ResourceDictionary and tried to use it... I have main window in which i create Frame and on click some UserControl is loaded to that same Frame.I include my ResourceDictionary (root/style/Styles.xaml) to my main window like this: <Window.Resources> <ResourceDictionary x:Key="styles" Source="style/Styles.xaml" /> </Window.Resources> in which i have: <ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"> <Style x:Key="ProductsRequired" TargetType="{x:Type Label}"> <Setter Property="Height" Value="28" /> ... I don't use it on my main window but want to use it on my UserControls, which are loaded to that main window and i try to use it like this: <Label Name="product1" Style="{DynamicResource ProductsRequired}" /> Warning i am getting all the time is: The resource "ProductsRequired" could not be resolved. I even tried including Styles to my UserControl <UserControl.Resources> <ResourceDictionary x:Key="styles" Source="../style/Styles.xaml" /> </UserControl.Resources> and nothing happens... • subversion 1.6.x losing changes on check-in

  I'm trying to figure out if this is a known issue with SVN 1.6.x Developer A modifies a file and commits it. Developer B modifies the same file. Tries to commit it and gets told local copy out of date so does an update and then a commit. However the changes from Developer A are lost so the resulting file only contains the version that Developer B checked in. We can see this in the logs. It seems to happen when the same file is modified but in different places. Anyone else experienced this? We've had it happen 4 or 5 times in the past few weeks and we've lost a half day or so each time trying to figure out what's been lost, etc. We're starting to lose confidence in SVN. Should we be thinking of moving to GIT or Mecurial? Would that sort out this problem?

• Best Practices for a Web App Staging Server (on a budget)

  I'd like to set up a staging server for a Rails app. I use git & github, Cap, and have a VPS with Apache/Passenger. I'm curious as to the best practices for a staging setup, as far as both the configuration of the staging server as well as the processes for interacting with it. I do know it should be as identical to the production server as possible, but restricting public access to it will limit that, so tips on securing it only for my use would also be great. Another specific question would be whether I could just create a virtual host on the VPS, so that the staging server could reside alongside the production one. I have a feeling there may be reasons to avoid this, though.
