• Why is there no generic implementation of OrderedDictionary in .net?

  Why did Microsoft not provide generic implementation of OrderedDictionary? There are a few custom implementations I've seen, including: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/recipes/GenericOrderedDictionary.aspx But why did Microsoft not include it in the base .net library? Surely they had a reason for not building a generic.... but what is it? • Are certification courses worth it?

  I'm planning on getting certification in Database Development for SQL Server (MSTC - 70-433). I'm a junior level report writer at a new job and the company is offering to pay the majority, if not all, of training course fees. The course is five days. I noticed that MS has a self-paced training kit (book) that I could use. I'm wondering if this would be a better option because it will allow me to go as quick as possible. I've also heard about video training sessions (Lynda.com) but they seem to go at slow pace. My questions are: What should I expect at a certification course? Is it hands-on training? Small classes with personal feedback or not? Would I be better off learning at my own pace using the training kit? (I'd rather this not turn into a certifications are pointless discussion..)

• ltsp: install in chroot with GUI-Installer (lirc)

  I am trying to install "lirc" into chroot. Installing lirc requires "answering 2 questions". I am on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. (in Virtualbox) I try this way: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/GuiInstallLocalApp but I had errors and then the server would hang on reboot. No big surprise, the guide says it is valid for 9.04. Maybe I could create " debconf.seeds" ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients ) but I dont know how to. Could somebody point me in the right direction? thanks Roberto

• UML Class Diagram: Abstract or Interface?

  I am modeling a class diagram and have spotted an opportunity to simplify it slightly. What I want to know is, would this it be better to implement an abstract class or an interface? The scenario is this, I have the classes: Artist Genre Album Song All of which share the methods getName, setName, and getCount (playcount that is). Would it be best to create an abstract 'Music' class with the aforementioned abstract methods, or should I create an interface, since the classes that implement the interface have to include all of the interface's methods (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). I hope I've given enough detail, please ask questions if I haven't. Thanks!

• Object Oriented programming on 8-bit MCU Case Study

  I see that there's a lot of questions related to OO Programming here. I'm actually trying to find a specific resource related to embedded OO approaches for an 8 bit MCU. Several years back (maybe 6) I was looking for material related to Object Oriented programming for resource constrained 8051 microprocessors. I found an article/website with a case history of a design group that used a very small RAM part, and implemented many Object based constructs during their C design and development. I believe it was an 8051. The project was a success, and managed to stay inside the very small ROM/RAM they had available. I'm attempting to find it again, but Google can't locate it. The article was well written, and recommended a "mixed" approach using C methods for inheritance and encapsulation - if I recall correctly. Can anyone help me locate this article?

• Share on Facebook does not show thumbnail images

  I have a PHP application which has a "Share on Facebook" button that, On the development server shows the thumbnail images correctly and allows the user to select between them On the live server, it does NOT show the thumbnail images at all. The relevant portion of the .htaccess file is: # Set up caching on media files for 2 days <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|flv)$"> ExpiresDefault A172800 Header append Cache-Control "public" </FilesMatch> I'm using the exact same set of php files and .htaccess, but the server configuration is different. What could be causing this? Note that the text appears fine. Edit1 We are also doing some URL rewriting related to images in the .htaccess (on both servers): ... RewriteRule ^.*/content/image/(.*)$ content/image/$1 [L] ... RewriteRule ^.*/images/(.*)$ images/$1 [L] ... Would that be somehow making a difference? Images appear fine all throughout the site. • Remapping Shift Selection in Gnome Terminal

  Hey so I was hoping somebody could help me out in finding a way to get shift-selection working in gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 11.10. I found the question/bug report below but neither seem to have a solution. I use Emacs for development and being able to select my current line with shift-ctrl-a/e is something I find myself trying to do every couple of minutes. I use 10.04 at work and this is possible so I am not sure what has changed. If it matters I am using Gnome 3 Shell and I use bashish to style my terminal.   I am interested in studying game design, not because I want a job in the games industry, but because I am interested in the subject itself. I read the following questions, but they mostly deal with the effects on your career in game industry. Should I consider a graduate degree in game development? Game Development Degree vs Computer Science Degree First I thought a game development degree could be beneficial. But from the websites of colleges that offer such degrees, I feel like its more about basic programming with examples from games. This college offers game design degrees, for example. My question is, can I benefit from such a degree when I already have a degree in Computer Science, I already know programming, I'm already developing a game and finally, I have this site to help me when I get stuck?

• How do you get aware of new tools?

  How do you get aware of new tools (libraries, applications, etc)? This question is only about "getting aware" that some tool exist and could be used. Learning and trying is different issue. Right now I get most awareness from stackexchange and freshmeat sites. But I wonder if there are more efficient way. E.g. 80% of freshmeat projects are no-use for me, but it reasonable overhead, because tools that I find trough it save me days or even weeks. Here are some related, but a bit different questions: How much time do you invest in exploring new technology? How to become aware of new languages, techniques and methodologies? What website are you using most to keep you updated on software development?

• Software installed on root partition or on home partition

  I am planning to install some big softwares such as Matlab (4GB), Mathematica (4GB) on my Ubuntu partitions. I was wondering if I installed them on my home partition, when I reinstall Ubuntu without touching the home partition, will the softwares still be runnable after reinstallation? what are the advantage and disadvantages of installing softwares on root partition and of on home partition? with your answer to the previous questions, what are some reasonable plans for the sizes of root partition and of home partition? Note that I would like to learn programming in C, C++, Java, Python, Lisp, databases under both Ubuntu and Windows, and no games. My laptop has around 230 GB, where I plan to install both Windows and Ubuntu, and reserve 40 GB for Ubuntu (three partitions: swap, root and home), 110 GB for NTFS partition shared between the two OSes, 70 GB for Windows OS partition, and 10 GB that can be added to any of the above partitions.   I have written a small front-end to the Festival TTS system using Python/Django. I wish to deploy it on the Google App Engine cloud. A few questions: My application uses the Festival app 'text2wave'. Will is work on the cloud? I have used Python primitives like subprocess.call() to invoke the aforementioned program. Will that work? If your answer to any or both of (1) and (2) is no, is there a free api on the web that I can use (from the appengine)? I read somewhere about placing calls from Phono to a Voxeo backend, but I'm not sure what that means. I am aware of the Google Translate extension that allows translation using an HTTP GET (REST) request, but here the text is limited to 100 chars. Bad. Plus, they may take it down any point of time.

• Mouse buttons and all keyboard buttons except alt and super randomly stops working

  A couple of times lately, unity appears to not accept button presses from neither the mouse or the keyboard. This happens after a random amount of time, usually a couple of hours, or right after boot. The weird thing is: I can still move the mouse around. I can press alt to get the unity menu thingy (but i can't type anything in it) I can press super to show/hide the unity search. None of the applications seem to get the input Ive tried connecting a second mouse, same issue I can press ctrl+alt+f1 to drop to a shell tty The shell works fine Now, this is definitely a bug, probably in unity(?), but it's hard to search for when I don't know what's causing it. Is there something I can do to debug? I've found some people that appears to be having the same problem with the mouse only, but most of the time, their questions are unanswered or closed for being too specific. What would be a good strategy to fix this? Should I report it as a bug?

• Is there an open source license that allows any use, except within a GPL/copyleft project? [on hold]

  I would like to open source some code with a permissive license (say MIT/BSD) I would be happy for it to be used both commercially and in any open source project that is not copyleft (GPL being the main one obviously). I looked at the list of non-GPL compatible licenses here: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#GPLIncompatibleLicenses But none seemed to be quite what I wanted. Is there such a license already? If not, would it even be possible to do this? EDIT: I have been asked to edit this question to clarify. I'm not sure how it's unclear, as that wasn't stated. What I would like to know is simply the answer to the topic - can anyone point to a standard licence that is permissive as possible, while restricting use in copyleft licence. I'm not clear why the question would be suspended by the same person that edited spelling differences (apparently British English is a 'mistake') in the question earlier, and by another that had answered licencing questions in other posts.

• TFS vs. Star Team comparison

  I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity. • Can I use GPL software in a commercial application

  I have 3 questions about the GPL here: If I use GPL software in my application, but don't modify or distribute it, do I have to release my application under the GPL? What if I modify some software that my application uses. Then do I have to release my application under the GPL, or can I just supply the modified software under the GPLs terms. And what if I use GPL software, but don't modify it, can I distribute it with my application? My case in point is, I have a PHP framework which I use the GeSHi library to highlight some output. Because GeSHi is GPL, does my framework have to be GPL? Can I modify GeSHi for particular use cases of my application if I supply the modifications back to the GeSHi maintainers? Can I redistribute my framework with GeSHi?

Whilst I've tried to keep up-to-date with movements there are a lot of changes that have occurred between Delphi 7 and (current for us) 2010. Stack Exchange and here have been great for answering the "how do you" questions, but what I'd like is a resource that shows great examples of larger scale programming. For example is there anywhere that hosts examples of well written, multi form applications? Something that can be looked at as a whole to illustrate why things should be done a certain way?
