• unable remove/reinstall libxss1:amd

  Whenever I try to install anything (software-center or apt-get) I get an error report stating that libxss1:amd is in a "very bad inconsistent state" (translated from german) and that I should reinstall it. That would not bother me much but I am never sure if the stuff I'm trying will be working in the end. It really resists from being repaired apt-get install, apt-get remove, apt-get -f install, and all the usual suspects - nothing works. It always comes to: dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von libxss1:amd64 (--configure): Paket ist in einem sehr schlechten inkonsistenten Zustand - Sie sollten es nochmal installieren, bevor Sie die Konfiguration versuchen. Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von: libxss1:amd64 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I posted the error as is, since my translation might not be exact. But I guess you can figure from my text. I found out that this file is the X screen saver. Maybe I should kill it before handling that file. If thats so, than please tell me how. • How do I get from a highly manual process of development and deploy to continuous integration?

  We have a development process which is completely manual. No unit tests, interface tests are manual, and merging and integration are as well. How could we go from this state to implementing continuous integration with full (or at least close to full) automation of build and test? We have a pretty intense development cycle, and are not currently using agile, so switching to agile with CI in one move would be a very complicated and expensive investment. How can we take it slowly, and still moving constantly towards a CI environment?

• Does Hauppauge WinTVR 900H work with Digital TV in the UK

  I have been trying to sort out my Hauppauge WinTV 900H USB Tuner. Here in the UK, we do not have Analogue TV any more as we are fully converted to digital. I have had this working in Windows a while ago, but am having no joy in Ubuntu 13.04 all I get is a blue screen and no settings for the UK. Can anyone advise me how to set this up on my laptop. I have tried: Does Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502] work with ubuntu 12.04 LTS? I am using TVTime I have also read this page, which makes me think that this unit can only receive Analogue signals, which are no longer transmitted in the UK (which could be my problem!) Laptop Specifications: Intel® Core™ i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4 Intel® Sandybridge Mobile 6MB RAM Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Two views of Federation: inside out, and outside in

  IDM customers that I speak to have spent a lot of time thinking about enterprise SSO - asking your employees to log in to multiple systems, each with distinct hard to guess (translation: hard to remember) passwords that fit the corporate security policy for length and complexity is a strategy that is just begging for a lot of help-desk password reset calls. So forward thinking organizations have implemented SSO for as many systems as possible. With the mix of Enterprise Apps moving to the cloud, it makes sense to continue this SSO strategy by Federating with those cloud apps and services.  Organizations maintain control, since employee access to the externally hosted apps is provided via the enterprise account.  If the employee leaves, their access to the cloud app is terminated when their enterprise account is disabled.  The employees don't have to remember another username and password - so life is good. From the outside in - I am excited about the increasing use of Social Sign-on - or BYOI (Bring your own Identity).  The convenience of single-sign on is extended to customers/users/prospects when organizations enable access to business services using a social ID.  The last thing I want when visiting a website or blog is to create another account.  So using my Google or Twitter ID is a very nice quick way to get access without having to go through a registration process that creates another username/password that I have to try to remember. The convenience of not having to maintain multiple passwords is obvious, whether you are an employee or customer - and the security benefit of not having lots of passwords to lose or forget is there as well. Are enterprises allowing employees to use their personal (social) IDs for enterprise apps?  Not yet, but we are moving in the right direction, and we will get there some day.

Man, I would have loved to be in new Orleans this year, but, I guess these guys only understand one language and I wont be their puppy any more. You see, they wouldnt pay for my business class flight to TechEd from Israel. Me the great emperor of unit testing?! travelling coach for 12 hours? No thanks. • How do I simplify a 2D game grid for level management while keeping its by-pixel features?

  (I cross-posted this from StackOverflow as this seems to be a more appropriate forum. I've looked around a little here and I did not find an answer, so I hope this is not a recurring question.) This is a question dealing with 2D world design. I am playing around by creating a 2D bird's eye view shooter game, and I am looking to make the game sleek and advanced. I hope to be able to write physics so projectiles have momentum and knock-down properties. I am immediately running into the problem of world design. I need a way to have level files that store everything there is about a game. This is easiest by just having a grid of objects. But there are thin-walls and other objects that don't seem to fit into a traditional cell of a grid. I want to be able to fit all these together so I can streamline level design; so I don't have to put in the exact pixel-specific start and end of a wall. There doesn't seem to be an obvious translation from level file to game without forcing myself into a pacman-life scenario, meaning a scenario where the game feels boxy and discrete. There is a contrast between the smoothly (relatively) moving characters and finite jumps in a grid. I would appreciate an answer that would describe implementation options or point me to resources that do. I would also appreciate references to sites that teach game design. The language I am using is Java (although I would love to use C or C++, but I can never find convenient resources in those languages). Thank you for any answers. • Will the Global Demand for Water Outstrip the Supply by 2030?

  A recent study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by Oracle Utilities, titled “Water for All?”,considers the preparedness of utilities to supply water to the current global population of over 7 billion people, with a further 1 billion expected by 2030. It compares strategies used by utilities in 10 major countries to address this challenge. This study’s findings show that wide-ranging water management efforts and large-scale investments must be made if utilities are to meet near-certain water stress—demand outstripping supply—by 2030. The report is based on an online survey of 244 executives of water utilities in these countries, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 20 water utility executives and independent experts. The research concludes that utilities worldwide expect to meet future demand, despite increased supply pressure on supplies, due to improvements in water productivity that the wide range of measures utilities and governments will take to ensure that water is used more efficiently. • Building a Repository Pattern against an EF 5 EDMX Model - Part 1

  I am part of a year long plus project that is re-writing an existing application for a client.  We have decided to develop the project using Visual Studio 2012 and .NET 4.5.  The project will be using a number of technologies and patterns to include Entity Framework 5, WCF Services, and WPF for the client UI.This is my attempt at documenting some of the successes and failures that I will be coming across in the development of the application.In building the data access layer we have to access a database that has already been designed by a dedicated dba. The dba insists on using Stored Procedures which has made the use of EF a little more difficult.  He will not allow direct table access but we did manage to get him to allow us to use Views.  Since EF 5 does not have good support to do Code First with Stored Procedures, my option was to create a model (EDMX) against the existing database views.   I then had to go select each entity and map the Insert/Update/Delete functions to their respective stored procedure.   i'm a fan of ubuntu, but for now i want my installation to be perfect for my new laptop, its a series 5 of samsung with A6 processor. Somebody suggest what to do? or mention any problems related to this? Im more concern of the drivers to increase its performance because i am to develop an android app. I need "i dont know" to make this unit run as fast as possible without any dangerous tradeoffs. Also i read some forum saying that their units are overheating. -_- somebody help me please. and also i want to switch to gnome 3. And last thing, is there any differences in performance if i use alongside, replace or custom in formatting?

• Importing an existing project into Git

  Background During the course of developing our site (ASP.NET), we discovered that our existing source control (SourceGear Vault) wasn't working for us. So, we decided to migrate to Git. The translation has been less than smooth though. Our site is broken up into three environments DEV, QA, and PROD. For tho most part, DEV and the source control repo have been in sync with each other. There is one branch in the repo, if a page was going to be moved up to QA then the file was moved manually, same thing with stuff that was ready for PROD. So, our current QA and PROD environments do not correspond to any particular commit in the master branch. Clarification: The QA and PROD branches are not currently, nor have they ever been in source control. The Question How do I move QA and PROD into Git? Should I forget about the history we've maintained up to this point and start over with a new repo? I could start with everything on PROD, then make a branch and pull in everything from QA, and then make another branch off of that with DEV. That way not only will the branches reflect the differences in the environments, they'll be in the right order chronologically with the newest commits in the DEV branch. What I've tried so far I thought about creating a QA branch off of the current master and using robocopy to make the working folder look like the current QA environment. This doesn't work because the new commit from QA will remove new files from DEV and that will remove them when we merge up, I suspect there will be similar problems if I started QA at an earlier (though not exact) commit from DEV.

• Creating foreign words' learning site with memory technique (Web 2.0)? Will it work?

  I would like to earn a little money for realizing a good, simple project. My idea is to build a website for learning of chosen by me language (for users knowing English) using mnemonics. Users would be encourage to enter English words with translation to another language and describing the way, how to remember a foreign language word (an association link). Example: if I choose learning Spanish for people who knows English well, it would look like that: every user would be encourage to enter a way to remember a chosen by him/her Spanish word. So he/she would enter to the dictionary (my site database) ,e.g., English word: beach - playa (Spanish word). Then he/she would describe the method to remember Spanish word, e.g., "Image that U r on the beach and U play volleyball" - we have the word play and recall playa (mnemonics). I would like to give possibility of pic hotlinks, encourage for fun or little shocking memory links which is -- in the art of memory -- good. I would choose a language to take a niche of Google Search. The big question is if I don't lose my time on it?? (Maybe I need to find prototype way to check that idea?)

• RSpec + Selenium tests for .NET on Windows

  I'm a Rails developer doing TDD on a Mac with RSpec, Capybara and Selenium webdriver. Now I have been asked by my company to use this approach for a .NET on Windows environment. What is the best way of doing this? I could just install Ruby and use RSPEC, Capybara and Selenium webdriver for integration testing. But what about unit tests? I also looked at NSpec, but I'm not sure if I can combine that with Capybara or Selenium for integration tests. What would be a good approach here?

• What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

  I currently reading a lot about Design Patterns and I have been watching various Pluralsight videos from their library. Now so far I have learnt the following: Repository Pattern Unit of Work Pattern Abstract Factory Pattern Reading the awesome "DI in .NET" book Now I read lot about Services and Service Layers and wanted some advice about the best place to read up and learn about these. I presume this fits into Domain Driven Design and I should start there? The term "Service" just seem to be used widely within IT and it can be confusing the exact meaning. So my questions is: What is the Service Layer Where is the best place to learn about them. I know there are probably tonnes of interweb/books/blogs on the subject, but some good areas to start from would be nice. If I'm being too vague, let me know.

  When I find some interesting project (e.g. on GitHub) I often would like to use it and try it out to see how it works, but if there isn't a good documentation or some kind of tutorial it's hard to figure out how to use it. So my question is: how do you approach such a situation? How do you figure out which classes are important and how to chain them to put them to use? What would you look at first? An advice I found is to look at the tests (if there are any). But if there are unit tests for every class, how do you know which ones to look at first?

• Writing scripts for Visual Studio project

  What is the best way to write and run small scripts and tasks that are specific to a particular .Net project? Such things as configuring a database or confirming proper connections to servers. In Ruby, I would build rake tasks for this sort of thing. I am currently using unit tests for these tasks as they are easy to run within VS and they have access to all the necessary libraries and project code. However, this is not really their intended purpose and, with the dropping of Test Lists in VS 2012, it does not work nearly as well as it used to. Is there a better solution than writing a console project to handle these little code snippets I need to run periodically?

• Handling (many) multiple projects in Git in an enterprise environment

  One of the advantages of older version control systems such as CVS and SVN in enterprise development is that anyone can connect to source control and see all the projects that the company has. This can make it easier to get a high level view of what kid of development is happening outside your sprint and also keeps everything in one place and easy to find. However, distributed version control systems (Git, specifically) use the repository as their base unit. They work best with one project (or several closely related projects) per repository. This makes repository management more difficult in most enterprise environments where it is not unusual to have more than 25-50 projects to support. As far as I have been able to determine, you have to keep a list somewhere else of all the repos you have. There is software available, like GitHub, that help, but that still is an extra step beyond a single connection string and listing the contents of the repository. What is the best way to deal with the complexity of multiple repositories?

• Circular movement - eliminating speed ups near Y = 0

  I have a basic algorithm to rotate an enemy around a 200 unit radius circle with center 0. This is how I'm achieving that: if (position.Y <= 0 && position.X > -200) { position.X -= 2; position.Y = 0 - (float)Math.Sqrt((200 * 200) - (position.X * position.X)); } else { position.X += 2; position.Y = (float)Math.Sqrt((200 * 200) - (position.X * position.X)); } It does work, and I've ensured that at no point does either X or Y equal NaN. However, when Y approaches 0, it seems to go significantly faster. This surprises me, because the Y values are locked to the X, which is being incremented by a steady amount. What can I do to smooth the speed?
