• How to prioritize tasks when you have multiple programming projects running in parallel?

  Say you have 5 customers, you develop 2 or 3 different projects for each. Each project has Xi tasks. Each project takes from 2 to 10 man weeks. Given that there are few resources, it is desired to minimize the management overhead. Two questions in this scenario: What tools would you use to prioritize the tasks and track their completion, while tending to minimize the overhead? What criteria would you take into consideration to determine which task to assign to the next available resource given that the primary objective is to increase throughput (more projects finished per time unit, this objective conflicts with starting one project and finishing it and then moving on to the next)? • Writing scripts for Visual Studio project

  What is the best way to write and run small scripts and tasks that are specific to a particular .Net project? Such things as configuring a database or confirming proper connections to servers. In Ruby, I would build rake tasks for this sort of thing. I am currently using unit tests for these tasks as they are easy to run within VS and they have access to all the necessary libraries and project code. However, this is not really their intended purpose and, with the dropping of Test Lists in VS 2012, it does not work nearly as well as it used to. Is there a better solution than writing a console project to handle these little code snippets I need to run periodically?

• Quaternions, Axis Angles and Rotation Matrices. Which of these should I use for FP Camera?

  After 2 weeks of reading many math formulas and such I know what is a Quaternion, an Axis Angles and Matrices. I have made my own math libary (Java) to use on my game (LWJGL). But I'm really confused about all this. I want to have a 3D first person camera. The move (translation) is working fine but the rotation isnt working like I need. I need a camera to rotate arround world Axis and not about its own axis. But even using Quaternions, this doesnt work and no matter how much I read about Euler Angles, everybody says to me dont touch on it! This is a little piece of code that i'm using to make the rotation: Quaternion qPitch = Quaternion.createFromAxis(cameraRotate.x, 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f); Quaternion qYaw = Quaternion.createFromAxis(cameraRotate.y, 0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f); this.multiplicate(qPitch.toMatrix4f().toArray()); this.multiplicate(qYaw.toMatrix4f().toArray()); Where this is a Matrix4f view matrix and cameraRotate is a Vector3f that just handle the angles to rotate obtained from mouse move. So I think I'm doing everything right: Translate the view Matrix Rotate the Move Matrix So, after reading all this, I just want to know: To obtain a correct first person camera rotate, I must need to use Quaternios to make the rotations, but how to rotate around world axis? • Can someone explain the (reasons for the) implications of colum vs row major in multiplication/concatenation?

  I am trying to learn how to construct view and projection matrices, and keep reaching difficulties in my implementation owing to my confusion about the two standards for matrices. I know how to multiply a matrix, and I can see that transposing before multiplication would completely change the result, hence the need to multiply in a different order. What I don't understand though is whats meant by only 'notational convention' - from the articles here and here the authors appear to assert that it makes no difference to how the matrix is stored, or transferred to the GPU, but on the second page that matrix is clearly not equivalent to how it would be laid out in memory for row-major; and if I look at a populated matrix in my program I see the translation components occupying the 4th, 8th and 12th elements. Given that: "post-multiplying with column-major matrices produces the same result as pre-multiplying with row-major matrices. " Why in the following snippet of code: Matrix4 r = t3 * t2 * t1; Matrix4 r2 = t1.Transpose() * t2.Transpose() * t3.Transpose(); Does r != r2 and why does pos3 != pos for: Vector4 pos = wvpM * new Vector4(0f, 15f, 15f, 1); Vector4 pos3 = wvpM.Transpose() * new Vector4(0f, 15f, 15f, 1); Does the multiplication process change depending on whether the matrices are row or column major, or is it just the order (for an equivalent effect?) One thing that isn't helping this become any clearer, is that when provided to DirectX, my column major WVP matrix is used successfully to transform vertices with the HLSL call: mul(vector,matrix) which should result in the vector being treated as row-major, so how can the column major matrix provided by my math library work?

• How should I implement the repository pattern for complex object models?

  Our data model has almost 200 classes that can be separated out into about a dozen functional areas. It would have been nice to use domains, but the separation isn't that clean and we can't change it. We're redesigning our DAL to use Entity Framework and most of the recommendations that I've seen suggest using a Repository pattern. However, none of the samples really deal with complex object models. Some implementations that I've found suggest the use of a repository-per-entity. This seems ridiculous and un-maintainable for large, complex models. Is it really necessary to create a UnitOfWork for each operation, and a Repository for each entity? I could end up with thousands of classes. I know this is unreasonable, but I've found very little guidance implementing Repository, Unit Of Work, and Entity Framework over complex models and realistic business applications.

• Rotate 2d sprite towards pointer

  I'm using Crafty.js and am trying to point a sprite towards the mouse pointer. I have a function for getting the degree between two points and I'm pretty sure it works mathematically (I have it under unit tests). At least it responds that the degree between { 0,0} and {1,1} is 45, which seems right. However, when I set the sprite rotation to the returned degree, it's just wrong all the time. If I manually set it to 90, 45, etc, it gets the right direction.. I have a jsfiddle that shows what I've done so far. Any ideas?

  I am writing a set of junit test classes in java. There are several constants, for example strings that I will need in different test classes. I am thinking about an interface that defines them and every test class would implement it. The benefits I see there are: easy access to constants: "MY_CONSTANT" instead of "ThatClass.MY_CONSTANT" each constant defined only once Is this approach rather a good or bad practice? I feel like abusing the concept of interfaces a little bit. You can answer generally about interfaces/constants, but also about unit tests if there is something special about it.

How can I have it that when I press the up key, down key, left key, or right key, it doesnt move up one unit, stop, then keep moving. Also, how can i have it move in two directions at the same time wthout stopping another direction when letting off a key? • In what ways can I test an image slideshow javascript code?

  I have a slideshow of images (and links) on a page. These images are part of a JSON response to a request sent after the page loads. The slideshow is set to play at an interval of 2 seconds. The slideshow can be paused, played over, and all other controls a normal slideshow would have. As a Rails dev, I proposed cucumber but the javascript guys in the team are not comfortable with ruby. I saw some cucumber for javascript libraries coming up, still in experimental stage. I checked out jasmine and related tutorials but all I could get from them is how I can carry out any internal functional testing such as credit-cart validation, etc. - which I think could actually be handled in unit testing? (Screw the research I did and) How should I go about testing this and similar components?

  A workforce management software has complex GUI (for example values in a page depends on the status (closed or open) of other pages). Only latest and near past development has test coverage. During our last release, we received lots of bugs from customer in-spite of 2 weeks of testing Sprint . We don't have dedicated test team. The developers does the unit test & User acceptance test. Every day triggers automated regression test. I am afraid the developers are not testing the entire workflow because its time consuming also not able to automate it because of its complexity. Any suggestions ?. The legacy code (15 yrs development) has less code coverage. How can I improve quality ? Note: Now not possible to hire testers to have independent test team!!

  I'm trying to write a Java formula based on this tutorial: 2-D elastic collisions without Trigonometry. I am in the section "Elastic Collisions in 2 Dimensions". In step 1, it mentions "Next, find the unit vector of n, which we will call un. This is done by dividing by the magnitude of n". My below code represents the normal vector of 2 objects (I'm using a simple array to represent the normal vector), but I am not really sure what the tutorial means by dividing the magnitude of n to get the un. int[] normal = new int[2]; normal[0] = ball2.x - ball1.x; normal[1] = ball2.y - ball1.y; Can anyone please explain what un is, and how I can calculate it with my array in Java?

But I am thinking about other countries for offshore development.   I have a rather large collection of classes which check and mutate a given data structure. They can be composed via the composition pattern into arbitrarily complex tree-like structures. The final product contains a lot of these composed structures. My question is now: How can I test those? Albeit it is easy to test every single unit of these compositions, it is rather expensive to test the whole compositions in the following sense: Testing the correct layout of the composition-tree results in a huge number of test cases Changes in the compositions result in a very laborious review of every single test case What is the general guideline here?
