• Silverlight for Windows Embedded Tutorial (step 5 and a bit of Windows Phone 7)

  If you haven’t spent the last week in the middle of the Sahara desert or traveling on a sled in the north pole area you should have heard something about the launch of Windows Phone 7 Series (or Windows Phone Series 7, or Windows Series Phone 7 or something like that). Even if you are in the middle of the desert or somewhere around the north pole you may have been reached by the news, since it seems that WP7S (using the full name will kill my available bandwidth!) is generating a lot of buzz in the development and IT communities. One of the most important aspects of this new platform is that it will be programmed using a new set of tools and frameworks, completely different from the ones used on older releases of Windows Mobile (or SmartPhone, or PocketPC or whatever…). WP7S applications can be developed using Silverlight or XNA. If you want to learn something more about WP7S development you can download the preview of Charles Petzold’s book about it: http://www.charlespetzold.com/phone/index.html Charles Petzold is also the author of “Programming Windows”, the first book I ever read about programming on Windows (it was Windows 3.0 at that time!). The fact that even I was able to learn how to develop Windows application is a proof of the quality of Petzold’s work. This book is up to his standards and the 150pages preview is already rich in technical contents without being boring or complicated to understand. I may be able to become a Windows Phone developer thanks to mr. Petzold. Mr. Petzold uses some nice samples to introduce the basic concepts of Silverlight development on WP7S. On this new platform you’ll use managed code to develop your application, so those samples can’t be ported on Windows CE R3 as they are, but I would like to take one of the first samples (called “SilverlightTapHello1”) and adapt it to Silverlight for Windows Embedded to show that even plain old native code can be used to develop “cool” user interfaces! The sample shows the standard WP7S title header and a textbox with an hello world message inside it. When the user touches the textbox, it will change its color. When the user touches the background (Grid) behind it, its default color (plain old White) will be restored. Let’s see how we can implement the same features on our embedded device! I took the XAML code of the sample (you can download the book samples here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/D/B/1DB49641-3956-41F1-BAFA-A021673C709E/CodeSamples_DRAFTPreview_ProgrammingWindowsPhone7Series.zip) and changed it a little bit to remove references to WP7S or managed runtime. If you compare the resulting files you will see that I was able to keep all the resources inside the App.xaml files and the structure of  MainPage.XAML almost intact. This make sense because there is not support for phone applications on CE 6. I also had to specify width and height of my main page (on the WP7S device this will be adjusted by the OS) and I had to replace the multi-touch event handler with the MouseLeftButtonDown event (no multitouch support for Windows CE R3, still). I also changed the hello message, of course. I added the code to load a resource dictionary. Resources are an important feature of XAML that allows you to define some values that could be replaced inside any XAML file loaded by the runtime. You can use resources to define custom styles for your fonts, backgrounds, controls etc. and to support internationalization, by providing different strings for different languages. The rest of our WinMain isn’t that different. It creates an instances of our MainPage object and displays it. Since our TextBlock is inside the grid, we don’t need to provide an event handler for its MouseLeftButtonDown event. We can just use the pOriginalSource member of the event arguments to check if the event was generated inside the textblock. If the event was generated inside the grid we create a white brush,if it’s inside the textblock we create some randomly colored brush. Notice that we need to use the RGBA macro to create colors, specifying also a transparency value for them. If we use the RGB macro the resulting color will have its Alpha channel set to zero and will be transparent. Using the SetForeground method we can change the color of our control. You can compare this to the managed code that you can find at page 40-41 of Petzold’s preview book and you’ll see that the native version isn’t much more complex than the managed one.   I have a windows 7,32 bit laptop. • VMWare ESXi virtual machine can contact the gateway but not the DNS server

  I am having a bit of a strange issue. I have a VMWare ESXi server with two virtual machines running on it. They are running just fine and can communicate on the network without a problem. I am now trying to add a third. I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 Server. I assign it a static IP address and it's a fresh installation. Once installed I can ping the gateway but I cannot ping the DNS server. It's on the same network with the other two VMs which are communicating just fine. I have tried to reinstall the operating system but it still fails to connect. One interesting thing I notice is the arp reply's MAC doesn't look right. I have cleared the FortiGate's ARP cache though and checked the entry and it seems correct. The MAC it lists is the one for the router. • Troubleshooting latency spikes on ESXi NFS datastores

  I'm experiencing fsync latencies of around five seconds on NFS datastores in ESXi, triggered by certain VMs. I suspect this might be caused by VMs using NCQ/TCQ, as this does not happen with virtual IDE drives. This can be reproduced using fsync-tester (by Ted Ts'o) and ioping. (reiserfs /dev/sda): request=12 time=4950.0 ms When I move the first VM to local storage it looks perfectly normal: root@dynip211 /mnt/sda # ./fsync-tester fsync time: 0.0191 fsync time: 0.0201 fsync time: 0.0203 fsync time: 0.0206 fsync time: 0.0192 fsync time: 0.0231 fsync time: 0.0201 [... tried that for one hour: no spike ...] Things I've tried that made no difference: Tested several ESXi Builds: 381591, 348481, 260247 Tested on different hardware, different Intel and AMD boxes Tested with different NFS servers, all show the same behavior: OpenIndiana b147 (ZFS sync always or disabled: no difference) OpenIndiana b148 (ZFS sync always or disabled: no difference) Linux 2.6.32 (sync or async: no difference) It makes no difference if the NFS server is on the same machine (as a virtual storage appliance) or on a different host Guest OS tested, showing problems: Windows 7 64 Bit (using CrystalDiskMark, latency spikes happen mostly during preparing phase) Linux 2.6.32 (fsync-tester + ioping) Linux 2.6.38 (fsync-tester + ioping) I could not reproduce this problem on Linux 2.6.18 VMs. Another workaround is to use virtual IDE disks (vs SCSI/SAS), but that is limiting performance and the number of drives per VM. Update 2011-06-30: The latency spikes seem to happen more often if the application writes in multiple small blocks before fsync. For example fsync-tester does this (strace output): pwrite(3, "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"..., 1048576, 0) = 1048576 fsync(3) = 0 ioping does this while preparing the file: [lots of pwrites] pwrite(3, "********************************"..., 4096, 1036288) = 4096 pwrite(3, "********************************"..., 4096, 1040384) = 4096 pwrite(3, "********************************"..., 4096, 1044480) = 4096 fsync(3) = 0 The setup phase of ioping almost always hangs, while fsync-tester sometimes works fine. Is someone capable of updating fsync-tester to write multiple small blocks? My C skills suck ;) Update 2011-07-02: This problem does not occur with iSCSI. I tried this with the OpenIndiana COMSTAR iSCSI server. But iSCSI does not give you easy access to the VMDK files so you can move them between hosts with snapshots and rsync. Update 2011-07-06: This is part of a wireshark capture, captured by a third VM on the same vSwitch. This all happens on the same host, no physical network involved. I've started ioping around time 20. Is it possible to detect if the DHCP request comes from an Android or iOS device based on the DHCP request itself?   I installed Fiddler 4 Beta to do some HTTP tracing. I found a lot of calls being made to sites like : facebook, collegehumor and a bunch of other sites I've never visited. Could not trace what/who is initiating these calls as I do not see any Windows Processes. No one else is connected to my network. I use both Google Chrome and IE10 on a Windows 7 box. Please help me tracing and removing these malicious HTTP calls.

• HttpModule Init method is called several times - why?

  I was creating a http module and while debugging I noticed something which at first (at least) seemed like weird behaviour. When i set a breakpoint in the init method of the httpmodule i can see that the http module init method is being called several times even though i have only started up the website for debugging and made one single request (sometimes it is hit only 1 time, other times as many as 10 times). I know that I should expect several instances of the HttpApplication to be running and for each the http modules will be created, but when i request a single page it should be handled by a single http application object and therefore only fire the events associated once, but still it fires the events several times for each request which makes no sense - other than it must have been added several times within that httpApplication - which means it is the same httpmodule init method which is being called every time and not a new http application being created each time it hits my break point (see my code example at the bottom etc.). What could be going wrong here ? is it because i am debugging and set a breakpoint in the http module? It have noticed that it seems that if i startup the website for debugging and quickly step over the breakpoint in the httpmodule it will only hit the init method once and the same goes for the eventhandler. If I instead let it hang at the breakpoint for a few seconds the init method is being called several times (seems like it depends on how long time i wait before stepping over the breakpoint). Maybe this could be some build in feature to make sure that the httpmodule is initialised and the http application can serve requests , but it also seems like something that could have catastrophic consequences. This could seem logical, as it might be trying to finish the request and since i have set the break point it thinks something have gone wrong and try to call the init method again ? soo it can handle the request ? But is this what is happening and is everything fine (i am just guessing), or is it a real problem ? What i am specially concerned about is that if something makes it hang on the "production/live" server for a few seconds a lot of event handlers are added through the init and therefore each request to the page suddenly fires the eventhandler several times. This behaviour could quickly bring any site down. I have looked at the "original" .net code used for the httpmodules for formsauthentication and the rolemanagermodule etc but my code isnt any different that those modules uses. (i just hope someone out there can tell me why this is happening and assure me that everything is perfectly fine) :) UPDATE: I have tried to narrow down the problem and so far i have found that the Init method being called is always on a new object of my http module (contary to what i thought before). I seems that for the first request (when starting up the site) all of the HttpApplication objects being created and its modules are all trying to serve the first request and therefore all hit the eventhandler that is being added. I cant really figure out why this is happening. If i request another page all the HttpApplication's created (and their moduless) will again try to serve the request causing it to hit the eventhandler multiple times. But it also seems that if i then jump back to the first page (or another one) only one HttpApplication will start to take care of the request and everything is as expected - as long as i dont let it hang at a break point. If i let it hang at a breakpoint it begins to create new HttpApplication's objects and starts adding HttpApplications (more than 1) to serve/handle the request (which is already in process of being served by the HttpApplication which is currently stopped at the breakpoint). I guess or hope that it might be some intelligent "behind the scenes" way of helping to distribute and handle load and / or errors. But I have no clue. I hope some out there can assure me that it is perfectly fine and how it is supposed to be?

  I found this in the Tomcat documentation here What I don't understand is why they close all the JDBC objects twice - once in the try{} block and once in the finally{} block. Why not just close them once in the finally{} clause? This is the relevant docs: Random Connection Closed Exceptions These can occur when one request gets a db connection from the connection pool and closes it twice. When using a connection pool, closing the connection just returns it to the pool for reuse by another request, it doesn't close the connection. And Tomcat uses multiple threads to handle concurrent requests. Here is an example of the sequence of events which could cause this error in Tomcat: Request 1 running in Thread 1 gets a db connection. Request 1 closes the db connection. The JVM switches the running thread to Thread 2 Request 2 running in Thread 2 gets a db connection (the same db connection just closed by Request 1). The JVM switches the running thread back to Thread 1 Request 1 closes the db connection a second time in a finally block. The JVM switches the running thread back to Thread 2 Request 2 Thread 2 tries to use the db connection but fails because Request 1 closed it.   I've come up with a simple search view to search for records in my app. The user just enters all parameters in the search box then all this is matched against the database, then results are returned. One of these fields is the phone number....now in the database it's stored in the format XXX-XXX-XXX. • Calling C function from DTrace scripts

  DTrace is impressive, powerful tracing system originally from Solaris, but it is ported to FreeBSD and Mac OSX. DTrace uses a high-level language called D not unlike AWK or C.
