• Master Typing Productivity when Programming/SysAdmin [closed]

  I try to learn how to type fast and have managed to learn a lot. I am quite good at typing english text now. I do a lot of programmation though and if QWERTY seems fitted for english text, it doesn't seem fitted to type Ruby, Python, Javascript, Command Line or C++... I have read plenty of articles and if I respect their guidelines/tips, I am using a lot my right pinky specially to type []{}|\;:'"/?=+ enter delete. As you can see this symbols are the ones which are the most used when you are programming and we are using only one weak finger to reach them. Am I learning wrong? Is there is a way to be more productive? (I don't really want to switch to DVORAK) Have you some experiences/tips to share regarding this issue? • Faking Display tree (Sprite) parent child relationships with rasters (BitmapData) in ActionScript 3

  I am working with Rasters (bitmapData) and blliting (copypixels) in a 2d-game in actionscript 3. I like how you can move a sprite and it moves all it's children, and you can simultaneously move the children creating an interesting visual effect. I do not want to use rotation or scaling however cause I do not know how that can be done without hampering with performance. So I'm not simulating Sprite parent-child behavior and sticking to the movement on the (x, y) axis. What I am planning to do is create a class called RasterContainer which extends bitmapData that has a vector of children of type Raster(extending bitmapData), now I am planning to implement recursive rendering in RasterContainer, that basically copyPixels every child, only changing their (x, y) offset to reflect their parent's offset. My question is, has this been implemented in an existing framework? Is this a good plan? Do I expect a serious performance hit for using recursive methods this way?

• Should I understand SVN before I jump to GIT?

  I work in a department where no one has ever used source control before, including myself. I am trying to push the concept. I have spent a little while researching SVN. I some basics learned. I can Create/update/checkout/commit with command line and from Tortoise. I am starting to learn how to tag and branch but still confused a lot about conflicts between branches and trunk etc. I am still learning, but I do not have a physical person who can show me anything. Its all from books/tutorials and trial and error. From what I have read online it seems like git is the better thing to know, but its also more complicated. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Should I continue to master svn before moving to git or would I be wiser to just jump to git now? Are there pros and cons to both approaches?

• Azure website that talks to third party services

  I have website that crawls data from many third party services when user browse to webpage. This can be really slow because I hit third party server and process returned data before showing it to user. I am hosting website on Azure (shared mode). I am thinking to improve my implementation. Here is what I am thinking... Run a service that crawls data from third party services, process it and then store it in database. when user browse to my site, my site pulls data from database and display them to user. But above solution is not clear to me. Should I have normal service or wcf service? If wcf service then should website talk to database or wcf service (that can access data from database)? If normal service then how can I deploy on Azure?

• Using allocators for different systems

  I am going over the memory architecture for my game and even though I know my memory budgets may not be final, I at the point where I can start using them in a general sense. I know that I will need several allocators (for systems such as audio, rendering, etc) but I am unsure of how they will be accessed. I do not use singletons, so I can't just have something such as AudioManager::GetInstance().get_allocator(). Instead, I need to find a different method of usage but I am not sure of how. How can I store and call my allocators needed for several different systems over engine in an efficient manner?

• Music player that uses an alarm function with multiple time settings

  I have tried many different players searching for one with a specific feature that I would think would be easy. Simply, I want to play MP3 primarily. I would like to play a radio stream on Thursdays from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm, then return to playing MP3. Also, because I am in the Husker state, I would like to program another stream to start at game time on Saturdays and end several hours later, resuming my MP3 play until 11:00 am Thursday. Does anyone have a simple solution for me?

  I am building a very small e-commerce site, and I need a free and simple to use/deploy/integrate shopping cart that I can add into my website in order to be able to sell a FEW items. I want the shopping cart to be an add-on in my website, nothing fancy.Ideally when a person clicks on the "Add to cart" button, they will be redirected to the shopping cart, which will then handle different types of payment methods, and everything else you would expect from a fully working shopping cart.   Possible Duplicate: I cannot reach my deadline. What to do? My manager is a very deadline specific person. Even though I am a trainee, he insists on a deadline for every small assignment that he gives. Now it so happens that I miss the deadline. And boy, he doesn’t like that at all! So how do I say that i missed the deadline without inviting his wrath? How to stop getting into his bad books? P.S. I am not being lazy. • Is there an apt command to download a deb file to the current directory?

  I am often interested in the installation triggers (postinst, postrm) or certain parts (/usr/share or /etc) of packages. Currently, I am running the next command to retrieve the source code: apt-get source [package-name] The downside is, this file is often much bigger than the binary package and does not reflect the installation tree. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

• Should a new programmer nowadays start with C/C++ or OOP language? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

• What is the difference between all-static-methods and applying a singleton pattern?

  I am making a database to store information about the users of my website (I am using stuts2 and hence Java EE technology). For the database I'll be making a DBManager. Should I apply singleton pattern here or rather make all it's methods static? I will be using this DBManager for basic things like adding, deleting and updating User profiles. Along with it, I'll use for all other querying purposes, for instance to find out whether a username already exists and to get all users for administrative purposes and stuff like that. My questions What is the benefit of singleton pattern? Which thing is most apt here? All static methods or a singleton pattern? Please compare both of them. P.S. The database is bigger than this. Here I am talking only about the tables which I'll be using for storing User Information.

• How do I find a proprietary driver for the Intel graphics card I have?

  I have an Intel corporation core processor integrated graphics controller (rev 18), and I am trying to get a proprietary driver for my graphics card so I can play Amnesia from the Humble Bundle. I am a female that can easily follow directions but doesn't know much about Linux yet. If you give me precise directions, I will follow them so you can help me fix the problem. I would really appreciate it! My laptop is a Dell n7010. Additional info: I believe that it is the graphics card that is causing Amnesia to crash, but I am unsure. I have tried running it on the lowest possible settings, and it crashes after the first loading screen. :( Also, I installed via the Ubuntu Software Center after purchasing the Humble Bundle. I have not tried the other games yet.

• It is worth planning before jumping in the code?

  I always thought that planning is important for a game. But i don't know at which point. Some are telling me to code instead of planning but i feel like its still important because when you will be in the code you will know what to do next more easily. I am currently working on a game that will have lots of content so i decided to start a design document introducing thoses content and at a side-level i am doing proofs of concept to check if it can be done. Parts of each proofs of concept then could be used later in the real game. EDIT: I am working alone on this project. So my question is : It is worth planning before jumping in the code ? Im still interested to know what others have to say about this. Cause i still get some poeple saying i should code instead of thinking.. so what your opinion on this ?

• Soccer Game only with National Team names (country names) what about player names? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Legal issues around using real players names and team emblems in an open source game 2 answers Ok...this question hasn't been asked before, its very similar to some, but here's the difference: I am making a soccer/football simulator game, that only has national teams (with no official logos) just the country names and flags. Now, my doubt is the following...can I use real player names (that play or played on that national team?) From what I understand if I use a player name linked to a club like Barcelona FC (not a national team) I need the right from the club and the association that club is linked to, right? But If I am only linking the name just to a country...I might just need the permission of the actual player (that I am using his name) and not any other associations, correct? • Ghosting Program for Ubuntu 12.10

  I am looking to figure out how to set up a mass backup system for a computer network (of about 25) and am looking for a ghosting program that makes an image of the entire system for backup/recovery purposes. While clonezilla would work.. you have to manually boot us the CD for it. I am looking for a program that runs INSIDE Ubuntu that sends a system image backup off to the network server at set times, then when needed could also be used to burn the clone back to the machine. Another words- automatically and the only time I have to do anything to it is when I need to burn a backup BACK to a 'crapped' machine. Any ideas?

• What are good HTML 5 and PHP 5 books to get? [closed]

  I am looking for beginner books into PHP 5 (Maybe with a bit into MySQL?) and HTML 5. I started self-teaching myself PHP although it has become a problem as the tutorials online are either outdated or just crap. I also managed to start learning with very little HTML knowledge so I am looking to brush up on my HTML knowledge and get more into PHP. I also am unsure weather I should be looking into XHTML or HTML5, or both so an answer to that would be splendid. I just want to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on other for my programming needs. I've searched Google for books but I'm just not sure which one is the "best" for me and makes for good practice and habits which brings me here.

  I am using to study (and at some point of time copy the desired module of) the code from these two sites (Google Code and Github). There is sourceforge too, I have some code, say some library that I want to share with the community, and I am to decide the hosting site. And before I decide I want to have opinions from this community. Which is your favorite Project hosting site or service? And why? There is one point where github can win over google code (may be I am wrong here), Github can let you forge whole project with a zip or tar file, but to do the same in google code we have to upload the zip file explicitly and put it in downloads....   I am a senior & am a retired R.N., always good at math (50+ yrs ago, but still am). I have been in a computer users group since the mid 90's, & have become moderately advanced in using computers, including trouble-shooting other people's computer problems. Most of my expertise was gained by reading, asking questions, & trying my own trouble-shooting with the help of books & the internet. Now,I would like to take the next step and learn programming. What would be the best way for me to learn programming? Attending classes isn't a practical option, and I'm not in a position to spend much money. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. • Need help with gimp 2.8 (cpu not used to full capacity) [closed]

  I know this isn't the right place to ask this question but maybe some one here can point me out to were I should place this question (or help me fix it :)). Since I updated Gimp to 2.8 (and let me start by saying how happy I am with the new gimp) I have notice that Gimp only uses 35% max of my CPU power. I have tried changing settings, assigning only one CPU to Gimp (both in gimp preference and in windblows task manager). No matter what settings I choose it only uses 35% of the cpu. If I assign just one Core to it then Gimp will use 100% of that core (which is about 35% of a three core processor I have. Any thoughts? I am using Windblows 7 64 bit, gimp 2.8.0, AMD a6-3500 cpu. I also use Ubuntu (am going to see if it works the same there). Any help would be great.

• Calculating angle between 2 vectors

  I am working on some movement AI where there are no obstacles and movement is restricted to the XY plane. I am calculating 2 vectors: v - the direction of ship 1 w - the vector pointing from the position of ship 1 to ship 2 I am then calculating the angle between these two vectors using the standard formula: arccos( v . w / ( |v| |w| ) ) The problem I'm having is the nature of arccos only returning values between 0 and 180. This makes it impossible to determine whether I should turn left or right to face the other ship. Is there a better way to do this?
