• Can you shade a specific section of a sprite? If so, how? [Java]

  I have been working on an isometric minecraft-esque game engine for a strategy game I plan on making. As you can see, it really needs some sort of shading. It is difficult to distinguish between separate elevations when the camera is facing away from the slope because everything is the same shade. So my question is: can I shade just a specific section of a sprite? All of those blocks are just sprites, so if I shaded the entire image, it would shade the whole block. I am using LWJGL. • Efficient way to calculate "vision cones" on 2D tile map?

  I'm trying to calculate which tiles a particular unit can "see" if facing a certain direction on a tile map (within a certain range and angle of facing). The easiest way would be to draw a certain number of tiles outward and raycast to each tile. However, I'm hoping for something slightly more efficient. A picture says a thousand words: The red dot is the unit (who's facing upwards). My goal is to calculate the yellow tiles. The green blocks are walls (walls are between tiles, and it's easy to check if you can pass between two tiles). The blue line represents something like the "raycasting" method I was talking about, but I'd rather not have to do this. EDIT: Units can only be facing north/south/east/west (0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees) and FoV is always 90 degrees. Should simplify some calculations. I'm thinking there's some sort of recursive-ish/stack-based/queue-based algorithm, but I can't quite figure it out. Thanks!

• Can I speed up File Sync for Ubuntu One?

  I am using ubuntu 11.04 on my home laptop and the same on my work laptop. I just wanted to sync the work folders on my home laptop to my office laptop which is ~300Mb of data. This would normally be a short download but ubuntu-one is taking forever to sync it. Any ideas what could cause this? I am not behind any firewall or anything of that sort. I have not checked the limit bandwidth box in the preferences.

• F# Project Euler Problem 1

  Every now and then I give project Euler a quick browse. Since I have been playing with F# I have found it a great way to learn the basics of the language. Today I thought I would give problem 1 an attempt… Problem 1 If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. The sum of these multiples is 23. Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000. My F# Solution I broke this problem into two functions… 1) be able to generate a collection of numbers that are multiples of a number but but are smaller than another number. let GenerateMultiplesOfXbelowY X Y = X |> Seq.unfold (fun i -> if (i<Y) then Some(i, i+X) else None) I then needed something that generated collections for multiples of 3 & 5 and then removed any duplicates. Once this was done I would need to sum these all together to get a result.   In Objective-C, there are several methods like initWithContentsOfFile:encoding:error: where one passes in a reference to an NSError object for the error: parameter. In this example, the value of the NSError object passed in can change based on what goes on at runtime when the method is being called and whether the body of the method was executed in a certain way successfully. In a way I think of this NSError object as sort of like a second return value from the method, and only differs from an object anObject in the statement return anObject; in that when this statement is called, execution leaves the method. So my question is, not only in the context of error handling in Objective-C, but in general, when should one use an "out" parameter in place of returning said value in a return statement?

• Is Azure Compatible with JPEG XR?

  I just put an F#/MVC app into a Windows Azure solution as a Web Role. Before migration, my JPEG XR (*.WDP) files were getting displayed on the client in IE9 without issue via my local and hosted sites. Now, after migration into Windows Azure, my JPEG XR files neither get displayed in my local Windows Azure compute emulator nor do they get displayed when they are deployed to http://*.cloudapp.net. Is there some sort of conflict with Widows Azure and (JPEG XR) *.wdp files? If so, what is the accepted best practice for overcoming this conflict?

• Free vs. Paid: Picking a Financial Model

  I finally embarked upon my first "paid" game. What this means is that I will incorporate some sort of monetization strategy in my game. This may mean making the app pay-to-download, making it "freemium" with paid content, or something else. Having never done something like this, I'm at a complete loss as to how to figure out what I should do. I know a couple of models (pay to download, freemium, etc.) and I can brainstorm some ideas. But how do I figure out what strategy to use? Perhaps there's some body of research on this? (I recall reading that MMOs popular in Korea use a model where cosmetic changes only are pay-to-buy; everything else is free).

• Programming Challenges for a beginner

  I'm in an unusual situation. A colleague of mine wants to "learn programming" and, being a developer I have been tasked with teaching him "programming". Personally, I am self taught, and have never taught any sort of skill to anybody else before so I am not quite sure where to start. Also, I still have a heck of a lot to learn myself (although don't we all)! I write in C# but is C# a good language for a beginner? I was thinking that Visual Basic .Net would be a better starting point, so was considering getting him setup with Visual Studio Express 2010, teaching him a few basics (variables, functions, classes etc) then finding some programming challenges and asking him to work through these. Does anybody have a good source of these sorts of challenges? Also is this a good strategy? Finally, what are your experiences of teaching programming to somebody else and what advice would you give?

• How relevant is PHP today for browser games?

  I was the lead developer of 2 moderately successful browser games quite a few years back, and plan on working on a new game soon. At the time, I wrote them in pure PHP (no template engine or anything of the sort). I'd like to start working on a new game, but have been out of the web development world for a while. Reading around, I hear a lot of good about Rails, Django, Node.js, etc., with which I have no experience (although I know my way around Python, Javascript, and the others quite well). So my question is the following- if I were to go in my old ways and go with PHP again, would I be making things hard for myself? Would picking something more "trendy" have a real impact on my development? In addition, does anyone have any pointers relating to specifically developing browser games with these more modern tools?

• Default save directory for gnome-screenshot?

  Are there any sort of configuration options for specifying the default save location for gnome-screenshot, or is this hard-coded into the source code? It used to be ~/Desktop, which seems to have changed to ~/Pictures (in 12.04). The only possible solution I've seen is about Setting the default name (as it includes time stamp information now instead of simply Screenshot#), but that solution doesn't really seem ideal to me. Also, this post suggested that the last save location is remembered the next time you take a screenshot, but in my experience, this doesn't seem to be the case. And in any case, following on from that, that entry in gconf-editor doesn't even seem to accurately reflect the last location, so more than likely an entry related to an older version of gnome-screenshot.

• Ubuntu boots into terminal

  When I turn on my computer (a CR-48), I keep loading tty1. I have tried xstart, and all I get is: Fatal server error: Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock When I attempted to make the directory (both sudo and not), I received these two errors: sudo: Can't open /var/lib/sudo/don/tty2: Read-only file system (I've gotten other tty's for different virtual terminals) mkdir: cannot create directory '/tmp/tX0-lock': Read-only file system Before I got to the only terminal state, I had the computer moving a few files from a network server to the computer, I put it to sleep without stopping the transfers, and started the computer again away from my home network, and attempted to stop the transfers, the computer than restarted. Running sudo reboot puts me right back in the virtual terminal, and I can't get into any sort of x application.

I have been having difficult time find applications offer this functionality, it is like a local database with search ability and easy data-entry methods. I can build one, but I don't have the time to invest in doing so. Can you refer me to any application/software that can do that, it would be great. It does not matter if it is paid or free.

• Can desktop applications be written using javascript?

  Is it currently possible to write desktop applications using javascript, html, css? Possible solutions: Use Adobe AIR runtime and program in js. But no, if I'm using AIR, the AS3 suites it the most. So not a good option. GWT: No because it uses Java and then convert it to js or what ever. Pyjamas: Interesting. But I'm currently focusing on JavaScript. So I don't want to use python and cross-compile to js. Run a local server and use the browser in full screen mode. Sort of okay, but still its the same browser thing. And difficult to distribute. So what is the best option? I'm excited about node.js which is the main reason for looking into JavaScript. Otherwise I would have choose python.

• Converting large files in python

  I have a few files that are ~64GB in size that I think I would like to convert to hdf5 format. I was wondering what the best approach for doing so would be? Reading line-by-line seems to take more than 4 hours, so I was thinking of using multiprocessing in sequence, but was hoping for some direction on what would be the most efficient way without resorting to hadoop. Any help would be very much appreciated. (and thank you in advance) EDIT: Right now I'm just doing a for line in fd: approach. After that right now I just check to make sure I'm picking out the right sort of data, which is very short; I'm not writing anywhere, and it's taking around 4 hours to complete with that. I can't read blocks of data because the blocks in this weird file format I'm reading are not standard, it switches between three different sizes... and you can only tell which by reading the first few characters of the block.

• Is it bad style to redundantly check a condition?

  I often get to positions in my code where I find myself checking a specific condition over and over again. I want to give you a small example: suppose there is a text file which contains lines starting with "a", lines starting with "b" and other lines and I actually only want to work with the first two sort of lines. My code would look something like this (using python, but read it as pseudocode): # ... clear_lines() # removes every other line than those starting with "a" or "b" for line in lines: if (line.startsWith("a")): # do stuff if (line.startsWith("b")): # magic else: # this else is redundant, I already made sure there is no else-case # by using clear_lines() # ... You can imagine I won't only check this condition here, but maybe also in other functions and so on. Do you think of it as noise or does it add some value to my code?

• Custom HTML Tags: Are there any specifications stating a standard way to handle them?

  It seems like for years they've just been given default styling and inline display. Is there a spec somewhere that has dictated this? I've looked over the RFC's but I'm not particularly good with RFC-ese, and I didn't notice anything anywhere. For example <body> Some content <mycustomtag>something else</mycustomtag> more content. </body> I can still style it with CSS, and the browser doesn't outright vomit... so it seems like there is some sort of expected behavior. Was that dictated by a specification?

• Uploading or attaching files that located on a shared drive doesn't work?

  I have this odd, quite minor, but annoying issue that I am quite perplexed about. Whenever I try to upload a file via my browser(let's say attach a file to an email in GMail), I click 'Browse' button and it opens standard file selection dialog, that doesn't show network drives. Further more if I try to drag a file from a network drive into GMail, it doesn't work either, it just doesn't let me do that. This issue has been around for quite sometime now, and I am just curious if this is something on my side or if it's a bug or a misconfiguration of some sort. FWIW, I am currently running 10.10, network drive is a samba share on NAS. This happens in FF and Chrome and this is only happens with Samba mounts. As a matter of fact, NFS volumes that are located on the same network operate perfectly fine.

• How to acheive a smoother lighting effect

  I'm making a tile based game in XNA So currently my lightning looks like this: How can I get it to look like this? Instead of each block having its own tint, it has a smooth overlay. I'm assuming some sort of shader, and to tell it the lighting and blur it some how. But im not an expert with shaders. My current lighting calculates the light, and then passes it to a spritebatch and draws with a color parameter EDIT: No longer uses spritebatch tint, I was testing and now pass parameters to set the light values.   What are the conventions for item batch identifiers in inventory management systems? For example: A retail supermarket can order 'Item X' from either 'Supplier A' or 'Supplier B'. When it completes an order for the item from either supplier, it needs to store the record of the receipt. Inventory quantity for the item is increased upon receipt of the order. However it is also required to store some record of the supplier. Thus some sort of batch identifier is required. This batch identifier will uniquely identify the item received and the supplier from whom it is received. A new batch is created each time items are received in stock (for example, after an order). Hence, for purposes of accounting / auditing, information available to identify an item after it was sold comprises of ITEM_CODE, ITEM_NAME, BATCH_CODE. The BATCH_CODE is unique and is associated with DATE_RECEIVED, SUPPLIER_CODE, QTY_RECEIVED. Is this a complete system specification for the above scenario or has anything significant been left out?

• Install Ubuntu on MacBook Pro without a CD

  Trying to install Ubuntu server on my MacBook however the CD drive is not working. All the guides I have seen so far use the bootcamp process (same as for windows) to achieve this. I currently have a windows partition on my machine (it was installed with a CD when the drive was ok) which I'm going to remove before I do this. Is it possible to boot using the USB drive from the Mac bootloader using this method? I don't want to remove my Windows partition to find that I NEED a CD to do this. I would also prefer to have a separate partition as opposed to any sort of VM setup to do this.
