  • Running applictions via ruby and multi-core support? (OSX)

    - by Nick Faraday
Hi All, I'm looking for some tutorials/resources/tips that will show me how to run applications via a ruby script. I have several small tools that we use in our day to day operations that I want to manage their tasks in one ruby script. Basically what I'm trying to do is: run app via ruby script. (wait for result) get result code (success, or error msg) if ok, start the app on its next task. Also each of the tasks are independent so I'd like to take advantage of the 8 cores on my MacPro and run 8 instances at a time. Any resources you could point me towards would be greatly appreciated!

  • Why Are Ruby Programmers So Full of Themselves? [closed]

    - by Pierreten
I've noticed this culture surrounding Ruby where developers truly believe that they are somehow more gifted than developers of other languages, regardless of experience and talent (even when that isn't the case, I've met some extremely junior Ruby developers come up with some pretty basic constructs, and pass them off as some sort of revolutionary idea). The derision of strongly typed languages seems to be a common theme as well; regardless of its merits. Is there something particular to the Ruby syntax in general that is to account for this? Is there a socialogical component to it?

  • How does Ruby's Enumerator object iterate externally over an internal iterator?

    - by Salman Paracha
As per Ruby's documentation, the Enumerator object uses the each method (to enumerate) if no target method is provided to the to_enum or enum_for methods. Now, let's take the following monkey patch and its enumerator, as an example o = Object.new def o.each yield 1 yield 2 yield 3 end e = o.to_enum loop do puts e.next end Given that the Enumerator object uses the each method to answer when next is called, how do calls to the each method look like, every time next is called? Does the Enumeartor class pre-load all the contents of o.each and creates a local copy for enumeration? Or is there some sort of Ruby magic that hangs the operations at each yield statement until next is called on the enumeartor? If an internal copy is made, is it a deep copy? What about I/O objects that could be used for external enumeration? I'm using Ruby 1.9.2.

  • How do I serve Ruby on Rails applications on Windows Server 2008?

    - by Adam Lassek
I have spent the last several hours attempting to get Ruby on Rails running on a Windows server with no luck. At first I tried configuring a test application through IIS7's FastCGI support, but the documentation for this is not very good. I've been following this blog entry, and this one, and this one, and this one but everything seems to be missing major steps, or are out of date. And every article keeps linking back to this Howto from rubyonrails.org that doesn't exist. The sense that I'm getting is that even if I manage to make this work, IIS' FastCGI isn't good enough to use in a production environment anyway. So it looks like my best bet is to setup a reverse proxy in IIS that points to Apache & Mongrel/Passenger using ARR and UrlRewrite. Is there anybody else out there stuck deploying a Rails application on a Windows stack? Am I on the right track? Can you give me a better idea of how to configure this? I believe Plesk already installed an instance of Apache/Tomcat running on this server using a different port, so adding another virtual host shouldn't be difficult; the hardest part seems to be setting up the reverse proxy through IIS.

  • Basics of Website development [closed]

    - by user975234
I have read this post: What should every programmer know about web development? but I have some more questions... I will be developing a content related website very soon and I am confused about some technology stuff. I am thinking about developing the site using ruby on rails. So when I'll be buying hosting, do I need to ask for something special? Like for example, we need to specify what kind of hosting we need, windows or linux. So for ruby on rails do I need some extra facilities from the hosting provider? Is ruby on rails a good choice for a large content related website? This may be a bit stupid but how do I choose my backend, scripting languages etc? Thing is I am really new to website development. And the flow of making websites is not clear. Any links will be helpful. EDIT: I know this question has been voted as non constructive. But if any one still has some precise knowledge about how the flow of website development goes, please comment your views.. That will be helpful!

  • Sharing business logic between server-side and client-side of web application?

    - by thoughtpunch
Quick question concerning shared code/logic in back and front ends of a web application. I have a web application (Rails + heavy JS) that parses metadata from HTML pages fetched via a user supplied URL (think Pinterest or Instapaper). Currently this processing takes place exclusively on the client-side. The code that fetches the URL and parses the DOM is in a fairly large set of JS scripts in our Rails app. Occasionally want to do this processing on the server-side of the app. For example, what if a user supplied a URL but they have JS disabled or have a non-standard compliant browser, etc. Ideally I'd like to be able to process these URLS in Ruby on the back-end (in asynchronous background jobs perhaps) using the same logic that our JS parsers use WITHOUT porting the JS to Ruby. I've looked at systems that allow you to execute JS scripts in the backend like execjs as well as Ruby-to-Javascript compilers like OpalRB that would hopefully allow "write-once, execute many", but I'm not sure that either is the right decision. Whats the best way to avoid business logic duplication for apps that need to do both client-side and server-side processing of similar data?

  • Social Network ( Help) [on hold]

    - by brunocascio
I am in a great "problem" so to speak , and I need opinions to decide. The problem is to create a social network without knowing the number of users who use it (but if thinking if they were sufficient ) . The question is which language and framework to use .... I do not mind having to learn new technologies and / or languages ??. I am among PHP ( Laravel - Symfony - other? ) Ruby ( Ruby on Rails 4? ) Javascript ( Ember , express, locomotive , other? ) Python ( Django ) Java ( Grails , Play, other?) I have experience in both PHP and frameworks. In Symfony developed part of it, but I got tired having to do a thousand configurations for all . I know very little about Ruby , but I saw very easy . I do not know are saying the performance. Javascript costs me to get used to their paradigm , and do not know if at all sure to cover everything with Javascript. Django and python ( very poor knowledge ) Java , experience in data structure and android , but not web . Regarding the / s databases: In my head I have to MongoDB and costs change of opinion by another database with respect to documentation and EASE performance . But .......... frameworks have no support at all clear . I also thought of mixing technologies for using a tecnlogía backend and the frontend other. As I read in the new social network Origo . They use Symfony for REST and javascript for the frontend . ( Backbone , Underscore and RequireJS ) What do you recommend me ?

  • HELP!! Delayed-job: Rake aborted! Can't modify frozen hash

    - by pmneve
Too bad even the trace doesn't say which hash is involved. Sorry this post is long: am trying to provide enough context to be meaningful. Occurs intermittently when rake jobs:work is pulling a command out of delayed_jobs while my status observer is in the process of parsing a log file for detailed results of the previous delayed_job denizen. I have an observer class (in RAILS_ROOT/lib ) which listens for the events, makes a copy of them and calls the owner class ( in apps/models ) which then calls on the log parser (also in /lib) to do the actual work. (Should both of those classes, the observer and the parser be in app/models?) Am due to deliver this application in a few days and this is killing it (and me). Am using DirectoryWatcher to look for flag files that indicate the start and finish of the delayed_jobs. That is started at the end of environment.rb like this: require 'directory_watcher' $scriptStatusObserver = ScriptStatusObserver.new dirToWatch ="#{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/flags" $directoryWatcher = DirectoryWatcher.new( dirToWatch ) $directoryWatcher.glob= "*.flg" $directoryWatcher.interval=(15) $directoryWatcher.add_observer( $scriptStatusObserver ) $directoryWatcher.persist=("#{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/flags/dw_state.yml") $directoryWatcher.start at_exit { $directoryWatcher.stop } This code is outside of the run method (btw is that the best place or is inside the run better?) Here is the observer: require 'script_run' class ScriptStatusObserver def initialize @rcvdEvents = [] end def update( *events ) begin puts "#{LINE.to_s}: ScriptStatusObserver events: \n"+events.to_yaml cnt = 0 events.each do |e| if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) cnt = cnt + 1 @rcvdEvents << e end end ScriptRun.new.catch_up( @rcvdEvents ) if cnt > 0 @rcvdEvents.clear rescue puts $! end end end Here is ScriptRun (it attaches to an associative table built with has_many:through) require 'observer' class ScriptRun < ActiveRecord::Base set_table_name "scripts_runs" belongs_to :script belongs_to :run def parse( result ) parser = LogParser.new parser.parse(result) end def catch_up( events ) events.each do |e| typ = e.type path = e.path thisMatch = path.match(/flags\/(\d+)_(\d+)_([\d\.]+)_(\w+)\.flg/) run_id = thisMatch[1] script_id = thisMatch[2] ts = thisMatch[3] status = thisMatch[4] if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) end end end def status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) scriptrun = ScriptRun.find(:first, :conditions => [ "run_id = ? and script_id = ?", run_id.to_i, script_id.to_i ]) if scriptrun.kind_of?(ScriptRun) currStatus = scriptrun.status if not currStatus == 'completed' scriptrun.update_attribute(:status, status) if status == 'parse' flag = File.new(path) logSpec = flag.gets flag.close logName = File.basename(logSpec) logPath = logSpec.sub(logName, '') logName =~ /^(([\w_]+)_([\w]+)_(\d+))\.log$/ name = $1 basename = $2 runenv = $3 tsOrPid = $4 result = Result.new result.log_path = logPath result.basename = basename result.name = name result.script_id = script_id.to_i result.run_id = run_id.to_i if runenv == 'sit' runenv = 'SIT3348' end result.application_environment_id = ApplicationEnvironment.find(:first, :conditions => [ "nodename = ?", runenv]).id parse(result) if run_completed?( run_id ) myRun = Run.find(run_id.to_i) if myRun.kind_of?( Run ) myRun.update_attribute( :completed, Time.now.to_f ) end end end end else puts "#{__LINE__.to_s}: ScriptRun.status_update: ScriptRun not found for run #{run_id} script #{script_id} ts #{ts.to_s}" end File.delete(path) end def run_completed?( id ) scriptruns = ScriptRun.find(:all, :conditions = [ "run_id = ?", id.to_i] ) scriptruns.each do |sr| if not sr.status == 'completed' return false end end return true end end LogParser is too long even for this post but it reads the script log and pulls detailed information (counts and timings) out of the log and writes to a details table. It also tallies and calculates averages and rolls those up into summary tables for quicker access from the web pages. Here is the error trace: (don't ask why everything is under my Windows profile. I'm playing with Go and run into something I'm unable to find in Google, although there is certainly something that exists: I'm using the following struct: type Syntax struct { name string extensions *regexp.Regexp } type Scanner struct { classifier * bayesian.Classifier save_file string name_to_syntax map[string] *Syntax extensions_to_syntax map[*regexp.Regexp] *Syntax } I'd like to perform the following using Go and I'm quoting ruby because it's how I'd do that using ruby: test_regexpes = my_scanner.extensions_to_syntax.keys My goal is to get an array of *regexp.Regexp . Any idea on how to do that in a simple way ? Thank you !

  • Authlogic openid: getting undefined method openid_identifier? error in functional test

    - by usr
I use Authlogic with the Authlogic-openid addon (I gem installed ruby- openid and script/plugin install git://github.com/rails/open_id_authentication.git) and get two errors. First when running functional test, I get an undefined method openid_identifier? message on a line in my new.html.erb file when running the UsersControllerTest. The line is: <% if @user.openid_identifier? %> When running script/console I can access this method without any problem. Second when testing the openid functionality and registering a new user to my application using openid and using my blogspot account for that I get the following in my log file: Generated checkid_setup request to http://www.blogger.com/openid-server.g with assocication ... Redirected to http://www.blogger.com/openid-server.g?openid.assoc_handle=... NoMethodError (You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.call): app/controllers/users_controller.rb:44:in `create' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/httpserver.rb:104:in `service' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/httpserver.rb:65:in `run' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:173:in `start_thread' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:162:in `start' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:162:in `start_thread' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:95:in `start' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:92:in `each' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:92:in `start' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:23:in `start' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/webrick/server.rb:82:in `start' The code in the users_controller is straight forward: def create respond_to do |format| @user.save do |result| if result flash[:notice] = t('Thanks for signing up!') format.html { redirect_to :action => 'index' } format.xml { render :xml => @user, :status => :created, :location => @user } else format.html { render :action => "new" } format.xml { render :xml => @user.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end end The line giving the error being @user.save do |result|... I feel I'm missing something pretty basic but I have been staring at this for too long because I can't find what it is. I checked with the code on Railscasts episodes 160 and 170 and the bones GitHub project but found nothing. Thanks for your help, usr

  • Why won't ruby recognize Haml under ubuntu64 while using jekyll static blog generator?

    - by oldmanjoyce
I have been trying, quite unsuccessfully, to run henrik's fork of the jekyll static blog generator on Ubuntu 64-bit. I just can't seem to figure this out and I've tried a bunch of different things. Originally I posted this over at stackoverflow, but this is probably the better spot for it. The base stats of my machine: Ubuntu 9.04, 64 bit, ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) [x86_64-linux], rubygems 1.3.1. When I attempt to build the site, this is what happens: $ jekyll --pygments Configuration from ./_config.yml Using Sass for CSS generation You must have the haml gem installed first Using rdiscount for Markdown Building site: . - ./_site /home/chris/.gem/gems/henrik-jekyll-0.5.2/bin/../lib/jekyll/core_ext.rb:27:in `method_missing': undefined method 'header' for #, page=# ..... cut ..... • Redmine with Apache 2 + Passenger nightmare --- site is up and available, but Redmine doesn't execute

    - by CptSupermrkt
I was determined to figure this out myself, but I've been at it for a total of more than 10 hours, and I just can't figure this out. First, let me detail my environment (which I cannot change): Server version: Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) Ruby version: ruby 1.9.3p448 Rails version: Rails 4.0.1 Passenger version: Phusion Passenger version 4.0.5 Redmine version: 2.3.3 I have followed the Redmine instructions all the way through the test webserver to check that installation was successful with this command: ruby script/rails server webrick -e production The roadblock which I cannot overcome is getting Apache and Passenger to interpret and properly serve Redmine. I have searched pretty much every possible link within the first 10 pages or so of Google results. Everywhere I go I come across conflicting/contradicting/outdated information. We have a "weird" setup with Apache (which I inherited and cannot change). Redmine needs to be served through SSL, but Apache already has another website it's serving through SSL called Twiki. By "weird", what I mean is that our file structure is entirely different from all the tutorials out there on this version of Apache which have directories like "available-sites" and such. Here are the abbreviated versions of some of our config files: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf (the global configuration file --- note that NO VirtualHost is defined here): ServerRoot "/etc/httpd" ... LoadModule passenger_module /usr/local/pkg/ruby/1.9.3-p448/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5/libout/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /usr/local/pkg/ruby/1.9.3-p448/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5 PassengerDefaultRuby /usr/local/pkg/ruby/1.9.3-p448/bin/ruby Include conf.d/*.conf ... User apache Group apache ... DocumentRoot "/var/www/html" So just to clarify, the above httpd.conf file does NOT have a VirtualHost section. /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf (defines the VirtualHost for ssl): Listen 443 <VirtualHost _default_:443> SSLEngine on ... SSLCertificateFile /etc/pki/tls/certs/localhost.crt </VirtualHost> /etc/httpd/conf.d/twiki.conf (this works just fine --- note this does NOT define a VirtualHost): ScriptAlias /twiki/bin/ "/var/www/twiki/bin/" Alias /twiki/ "/var/www/twiki/" <Directory "/var/www/twiki/bin"> AllowOverride None Order Deny,Allow Deny from all AuthType Basic AuthName "our team" AuthBasicProvider ldap ...a lot of ldap and authorization stuff Options ExecCGI FollowSymLinks SetHandler cgi-script </Directory> /etc/httpd/conf.d/redmine.conf: Alias /redmine/ "/var/www/redmine/public/" <Directory "/var/www/redmine/public"> Options Indexes ExecCGI FollowSymLinks Order allow, deny Allow from all AllowOverride all </Directory> The amazing thing is that this doesn't completely NOT work: I can successfully open up https://someserver/redmine/ with SSL and the https://someserver/twiki/ site remains unaffected. This tells me that it IS possible to have two separate sites up with one SSL configuration, so I don't think that's the problem. The problem is is that it opens up to the file index. I can navigate around my Redmine file structure, but no code ever gets executed. For example, there is a file included with Redmine called dispatch.fcgi in the public folder. https://someserver/redmine/dispatch.fcgi opens, but just as plain text code in the browser. As I understand it, in the case of using Passenger, CGI and FastCGI stuff is irrelevant/unused.

  • Why did Matz choose to make Strings mutable by default in Ruby?

    - by Seth Tisue
It's the reverse of this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/93091/why-cant-strings-be-mutable-in-java-and-net Was this choice made in Ruby only because operations (appends and such) are efficient on mutable strings, or was there some other reason? (If it's only efficiency, that would seem peculiar, since the design of Ruby seems otherwise to not put a high premium on faciliating efficient implementation.)
