  • How do I conditionally assign ruby variables to javascript variables?

    - by Tony
I have a website where I need a javascript version of the "current user" object along with the ruby version. I have been assigning these variables doing something like this... Application Controller: def get_user begin @current_user = User.find(session[:user_id]) if session[:user_id] @current_user_json = @current_user.to_json rescue session.delete(:user_id) @current_user = nil @current_user_json = {} end end Web Page: var current_user = null; current_user_json = '<%= @current_user_json %>'; if(current_user_json != ''){ current_user = current_user_json.user; } Even when there is a current user, I get the current user is undefined. Probably because I am putting the current_user_json assignment around single quotes. However, if I don't put it around single quotes, I'll always get a javascript error when no user is logged in because the syntax is invalid - current_user_json = ; I think I am just looking at this completely wrong and there must be a better way. Given that this is probably a common thing to do, I wanted to get other people's opinion on how to create an object in javascript that is a duplicate of the ruby object.

  • How to exit a process run with Ruby if it takes more than 5 seconds?

    - by Alex
I'm implementing a checking system in Ruby. It runs executables with different tests. If the solution is not correct, it can take forever for it to finish with certain hard tests. That's why I want to limit the execution time to 5 seconds. I'm using system() function to run executables: system("./solution"); .NET has a great WaitForExit() method, what about Ruby?. Is there a way to limit external process' execution time to 5 seconds? Thanks

  • Which of these Array Initializations is better in Ruby?

    - by Bragaadeesh
Hi, Which of these two forms of Array Initialization is better in Ruby? Method 1: DAYS_IN_A_WEEK = (0..6).to_a HOURS_IN_A_DAY = (0..23).to_a @data = Array.new(DAYS_IN_A_WEEK.size).map!{ Array.new(HOURS_IN_A_DAY.size) } DAYS_IN_A_WEEK.each do |day| HOURS_IN_A_DAY.each do |hour| @data[day][hour] = 'something' end end Method 2: DAYS_IN_A_WEEK = (0..6).to_a HOURS_IN_A_DAY = (0..23).to_a @data = {} DAYS_IN_A_WEEK.each do |day| HOURS_IN_A_DAY.each do |hour| @data[day] ||= {} @data[day][hour] = 'something' end end The difference between the first method and the second method is that the second one does not allocate memory initially. I feel the second one is a bit inferior when it comes to performance due to the numerous amount of Array copies that has to happen. However, it is not straight forward in Ruby to find what is happening. So, if someone can explain me which is better, it would be really great! Thanks

  • Ruby - overriding/enabling multiple assignment (e.g. `a, b, c = d, e, f`)

    - by nicholaides
In ruby, you can do this: d = [1, 2, 3] a, b, c = d a, b, and c, will receive the values 1, 2, and 3, respectively. d, in this case in an Array and ruby knows to assign it's contents to a, b, and c. But, if d were a Fixnum, for example, only a would be assigned to the value of d while b and c would be assigned nil. What properties of d allow it to be used for multiple assignment? In my exploring so far, I've only been able to make instances of subclasses of Array behave in this way.

  • Live examples of the Windows Azure Platform running Java and Ruby on Rails

    - by Eric Nelson
At QCon in March we had a booth focused on interoperability out of which came the idea to create an application implemented in both Java and Ruby on Rails, running on top of the Windows Azure Platform. Nothing fancy, just an application to capture attendees view on Microsoft and Interoperability. It was implemented by Active Web Solutions, long time fans of Azure. Wroth a quick squint :-) Check out the related links below for info to get you up and running. • How to restart RoR services after server has been rebooted

    - by Alan DeLonga
Update I have been searching around to see what services would possibly need to be restarted in my project after reboot. One of them was thinking sphinx, which I finally got to the point where it logs: [Fri Nov 16 19:34:29.820 2012] [29623] accepting connections But I still cant run searchd or searchd --stop because there was no generated sphinx.conf file in the etc/sphinxsearch for more info refer to this open thread on thinking_sphinx after reboot I then turned to looking into restarting unicorn or thin based on some insight I got. The issue is when I check my gems I see one for thin AND unicorn. But when I try to start either one of them they have no file residing in etc/init.d/ where the nginx and sphinxsearch files reside... Would rebooting totally erase the files for an app server like thin or unicorn? We are hosted on Rackspace running ruby 1.9.2p290 rails (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) nginx/1.1.19 notice that there are gems for unicorn and thin but there is no unicorn.rb or thin.rb in my config folder for my app... I am still super lost if any one can give me some insight on some steps to take to figure this out I would really appreciate it. Anything would help, thanks for reading. thin 1.4.1 unicorn 4.3.1 When I run unicorn I get the same issue as referenced here : > /usr/local/bin/unicorn start /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/configurator.rb:610:in `parse_rackup_file': rackup file (start) not readable (ArgumentError) from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/configurator.rb:76:in `reload' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/configurator.rb:67:in `initialize' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/http_server.rb:104:in `new' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/http_server.rb:104:in `initialize' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/bin/unicorn:121:in `new' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/bin/unicorn:121:in `<top (required)>' from /usr/local/bin/unicorn:19:in `load' from /usr/local/bin/unicorn:19:in `<main>' When I run thin it just opens a command line prompt... /usr/local/bin/thin start >> Using rack adapter Other gems: * LOCAL GEMS * actionmailer (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) actionpack (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activemodel (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activerecord (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activeresource (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activesupport (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) arel (3.0.2) builder (3.0.0) bundler (1.1.5) carmen (1.0.0.beta2) carmen-rails (1.0.0.beta3) cocaine (0.2.1) coffee-rails (3.2.2) coffee-script (2.2.0) coffee-script-source (1.3.3) daemons (1.1.9) erubis (2.7.0) eventmachine (0.12.10) execjs (1.4.0) faraday (0.8.4) faraday_middleware (0.8.8) foursquare2 (1.8.2) geokit (1.6.5) hashie (1.2.0) hike (1.2.1) httparty (0.8.3) httpauth (0.1) i18n (0.6.0) journey (1.0.4) jquery-rails (2.0.2) json (1.7.4, 1.7.3) jwt (0.1.5) kgio (2.7.4) lastfm (1.8.0) libv8 (3.3.10.4 x86_64-linux) mail (2.4.4) mime-types (1.19, 1.18) minitest (1.6.0) multi_json (1.3.6) multi_xml (0.5.1) multipart-post (1.1.5) mysql2 (0.3.11) oauth2 (0.8.0) paperclip (3.1.1) polyglot (0.3.3) rack (1.4.1) rack-cache (1.2) rack-ssl (1.3.2) rack-test (0.6.1) rails (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) railties (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) raindrops (0.10.0, 0.9.0) rake (0.9.2.2, 0.8.7) rdoc (3.12, 2.5.8) riddle (1.5.3) sass (3.2.0, 3.1.19) sass-rails (3.2.5) sprockets (2.1.3) sqlite3 (1.3.6) sqlite3-ruby (1.3.3) therubyracer (0.10.2, 0.10.1) thin (1.4.1) thinking-sphinx (2.0.10) thor (0.16.0, 0.15.4, 0.14.6) tilt (1.3.3) treetop (1.4.10) tzinfo (0.3.33) uglifier (1.2.7, 1.2.4) unicorn (4.3.1) xml-simple (1.1.1) I am working on a project that was built by another group. The problem is the app is not running when you go to the address for the site. Then when I put in the ip address of the server it just says "Welcome to Nginx". I have also never worked on a Rails project that had to have specific services started before the application will start. Any insight as to how to figure out what services need to be restarted and how to go about restarting them would be greatly appreciated. I feel kind of dead in the water at this point... Thanks, Alan

  • Can someone explain the true landscape of Rails vs PHP deployment, particularly within the context of Reseller-based web hosting (e.g., Hostgator)?

    - by rcd
Currently, I have a reseller account with the company HostGator. I design websites, which up until now have occasionally been wrapped in Wordpress CMSs and the like (PHP applications). I then sell hosting (of the site I've designed) to the client, which is pretty simple, in that I can simply click a button and add a new shared hosting account/site with whatever settings I want. Furthermore, I then utilize WHMCS to automate billing and account management. It's a nice package and pretty simple. I pay something like $25 a month, and can sell a hundred accounts under this (because my clients bandwidth requirements are low). Now I am finding the need to develop more customized applications, including a minimalist CMS and several proprietary things. I soon anticipate developing these apps for clients as well. Thus, I've spent the past few months learning Rails, and it's coming along well now. The thing that has nagged at me all along, though, is the deployment issue. I can't wrap my brain around it. It seems like all of the popular options (Heroku, etc) have nice automation with git and are set up in the "Rails Way". I get that (sort of). But it's terribly expensive... a single dyno, a helper, and the cheapest database (which they say is mainly suitable for testing) that isn't limited to 5MB runs $51. This is for ONE app!!! Throw in a "production" DB and you're over $200. This is like... the same prices as getting a server somewhere, right? Meanwhile, going back to what I guess is a "traditional" hosting environment with Hostgator, their server only has Ruby 1.8.7 and Rails 2.3.5... No Rails 3. AND, no Passenger (not that I really understand the difference in CGI or mod_rails or whatever, but they say Passenger is the simplest). So I'm to understand that if I build an app in Rails 3, it won't run at all on this host? But damn, I already have these accounts under my reseller account there, all running static html and/or PHP stuff, right? So what now? How do I get all of this under one simple (and affordable) roof? Forgive my ignorance, but I just don't get it. Managing a VPS is cool and all, but entails learning server admin stuff and security... And it's expensive. I get that a shared and/or reseller "server-based" (forgive the terminology) may be inadequate for large-scale apps that use a lot of bandwidth... But what about for those of us who are building real (but small and low bandwidth) apps (with Rails) and who want to deploy them simply, cheaply, using the same conceptual approach as PHP? Even after learning all of this Ruby and Rails stuff for months, I'm questioning whether it's worth it when it comes to deployment. I want to build a small app, upload it to my home directory on a shared server account, and just make it run. Why should that be so hard? Am I just choosing the wrong language/framework? Forgive my ignorance in the subject; these questions are not rhetorical; just trying to learn here. So: 1) I'd appreciate if someone could give me a good rundown of how to understand deployment in Rails vs. PHP. 2) I'd appreciate if someone could address my issue with running a hosting/web business around reseller hosting (Hostgator) while also being able to host Rails apps. Can it be done? And how can a company like Hostgator completely ignore what's current in Rails/Ruby? Thanks.

  • Errors with shotgun gem and msvcrt-ruby18.dll when running my Sinatra app

    - by Adam Siddhi
Greetings, Every time I make a change to a Sinatra app I'm working on and try to refresh the browser (located at http://localhost:4567/) the browser will refresh and, the console window seems to restart the WEB brick server. The problem is that the content in the browser window does not change. A friend of mine told me it was a shotgun issue and referred me to rtomayko's shotgun gem: http://github.com/rtomayko/shotgun On this page I read that the shotgun gem would basically solve my problem, allowing the changes made to my app to show up in the browser window after I refresh it. So I installed the shotgun gem. The installation was successful. To activate the shotgun function you have to type shotgun before the file name. In this case my Sinatra app's file name is shortener.rb When I type shotgun shortener.rb to run my Sinatra app I get this error: C:\ruby\sinatrashotgun shortener.rb c:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/shotgun-0.6/bin/shotgun:137:in `': No such f ile or directory - uname (Errno::ENOENT) from c:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/shotgun-0.6/bin/shotgun:137:in block in ' from c:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/shotgun-0.6/bin/shotgun:136:in each' from c:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/shotgun-0.6/bin/shotgun:136:in find' from c:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/shotgun-0.6/bin/shotgun:136:in <top (required)>' from c:/Ruby19/bin/shotgun:19:inload' from c:/Ruby19/bin/shotgun:19:in `' I should also mention that before testing the shotgun method out to see if it worked, I installed the mongrel (I realize I should have checked to see if shotgun worked before doing this as installing mongrel has complicated this problem). So on top of getting the error message above I also get a pop up window from Ruby.exe saying: Ruby.exe - Unable to load component This application has failed to start because msvcrt-ruby18.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I have no idea what msvcrt-ruby18.dll is but I know that installing either shotgun and/or mongrel created this problem. Where to go from here? Thanks, Adam

  • How to access attributes using Nokogiri

    - by Liz
    I have a simple task of accessing the values of some attributes. Below is a simple script that uses Nokogiri::XML::Builder to create a simple xml doc. require 'nokogiri' builder = Nokogiri::XML::Builder.new(:encoding => 'UTF-8') do |xml| xml.Placement(:messageId => "392847-039820-938777", :system => "MOD", :version => "2.0") { xml.objects { xml.object(:myattribute => "99", :anotherattrib => "333") xml.nextobject_ '9387toot' xml.Entertainment "Last Man Standing" } } end puts builder.to_xml puts builder.root.attributes["messageId"] The results are below: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <Placement messageId="392847-039820-938777" version="2.0" system="MOD"> <objects> <object anotherattrib="333" myattribute="99"/> <nextobject>9387toot</nextobject> <Entertainment>Last Man Standing</Entertainment> </objects> </Placement> C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2-x86-mingw32/lib/nokogiri/xml/document.rb:178:in `add_child': Document already has a root node (RuntimeError) from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2-x86-mingw32/lib/nokogiri/xml/node.rb:455:in `parent=' from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2-x86-mingw32/lib/nokogiri/xml/builder.rb:358:in `insert' from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2-x86-mingw32/lib/nokogiri/xml/builder.rb:350:in `method_missing' from C:/Documents and Settings/etrojan/workspace/Lads/tryXPATH2.rb:15 The xml that is generated looks fine. However, my attempts to access attributes cause an error to be generated, "Document already has a root node". I don't understand why a puts statement would cause this error. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ruby Enterprise fails to compile with GCC 4.5

    - by Andrew
Ruby Enterprise Edition fails to compile from sources with GCC 4.5, but sucessfully compiles with 4.3.3. Actually, not sure if it's about GCC, but, in fact, i686 Arch linux system with laest updates won't compile RE. Compilation fails with the message: mkdir -p .ext/common make PRELIBS='-Wl,-rpath,/opt/ruby-enterprise-1.8.7-2010.01/lib -L/opt/ruby-enterprise-1.8.7-2010.01/lib -ltcmalloc_minimal ' ./lib/fileutils.rb:1215: [BUG] Segmentation fault ruby 1.8.7 (2009-12-24 patchlevel 248) [i686-linux], MBARI 0x8770, Ruby Enterprise Edition 2010.01 make: *** [.rbconfig.time] Aborted Are there any solutions excepting GCC downgrade?

  • Is Perl still a useful, viable language?

    - by Bob
I know it may have been asked before, but here goes nothing... Is Perl still something that would be considered useful? If someone was a new programmer (either completely new to programming or just a few month/years of experience) would Perl be something to be considered worthwhile to learn? Is Perl still used with frequency? Is it still popular? Or is Perl dying out compared to languages like Python, Ruby, PHP, ASP, .NET, etc.? Basically it boils down to this: Is it still used/is it still used frequently? If yes, is it dying? If no, will it make a come back? Is it something that would be worth learning? How does it compare in demand to languages like Python in both popularity and usability/viability? Could languages like Python or Ruby be considered replacements for Perl? Also, will newer versions of Perl really bring a large improvement to the Perl community, and perhaps bring Perl back to centerstage compared to other languages? EDIT: Okay, I suppose here's a better, reworded question: Is Perl still growing, or is it "dying"? Is it still a language worth learning and using? What projects does it really "shine" in compared to other languages? What makes Perl a language to choose? Essentially: is Perl growing obsolete compared to other languages, and if so, do you expect that to change, or to continue? And thank you to everyone who has answered so far, the discussion has been really interesting!

  • Newbie, deciding Python or Erlang

    - by Joe
Hi Guys, I'm a Administrator (unix, Linux and some windows apps such as Exchange) by experience and have never worked on any programming language besides C# and scripting on Bash and lately on powershell. I'm starting out as a service provider and using multiple network/server monitoring tools based on open source (nagios, opennms etc) in order to monitor them. At this moment, being inspired by a design that I came up with, to do more than what is available with the open source at this time, I would like to start programming and test some of these ideas. The requirement is that a server software that captures a stream of data and store them in a database(CouchDB or MongoDB preferably) and the client side (agent installed on a server) would be sending this stream of data on a schedule of every 10 minutes or so. For these two core ideas, I have been reading about Python and Erlang besides ruby. I do plan to use either Amazon or Rackspace where the server platform would run. This gives me the scalability needed when we have more customers with many servers. For that reason alone, I thought Erlang was a better fit(I could be totally wrong, new to this game) and I understand that Erlang has limited support in some ways compared to Ruby or Python. But also I'm totally new to the programming realm of things and any advise would be appreciated grately. Jo

  • How relevant is UTF-7 when it comes to parsing emails?

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
I recently implemented incoming emails for an application and boy, did I open the gates of hell? Since then every other day an email arrives that makes the app fail in a different way. One of those things is emails encoded as UTF-7. Most emails come as ASCII, some of the Latin encodings, or thankfully, UTF-8. Hotmail error messages (like email address doesn't exist or quota exceeded) seem to come as UTF-7. Unfortunately, UTF-7 is not an encoding Ruby understands: > "hello world".encode("utf-8", "utf-7") Encoding::ConverterNotFoundError: code converter not found (UTF-7 to UTF-8) > Encoding::UTF_7 => #<Encoding:UTF-7 (dummy)> My application doesn't crash, it actually handles the email quite well, but it does send me a notification about the potential error. I spent some time googling and I can't find anyone that implemented the conversion, at least not as a Ruby 1.9.3 Encoding::Converter. So, my question is, since I never got an email with actual content, from an actual person, in UTF-7, how relevant is that encoding? can I safely ignore it?

  • How can I rank teams based off of head to head wins/losses

    - by TMP
I'm trying to write an algorithm (specifically in Ruby) that will rank teams based on their record against each other. If a team A and team B have won the same amount of games against each other, then it goes down to point differentials. Here's an example: A beat B two times B beats C one time A beats D three times C bests D two times D beats C one time B beats A one time Which sort of reduces to A[B] = 2 B[C] = 1 A[D] = 3 C[D] = 2 D[C] = 1 B[A] = 1 Which sort of reduces to A[B] = 1 B[C] = 1 A[D] = 3 C[D] = 1 D[C] = -1 B[A] = -1 Which is about how far I've got I think the results of this specific algorithm would be: A, B, C, D But I'm stuck on how to transition from my nested hash-like structure to the results. My psuedo-code is as follows (I can post my ruby code too if someone wants): For each game(g): hash[g.winner][g.loser] += 1 That leaves hash as the first reduction above hash2 = clone of hash For each key(winner), value(losers hash) in hash: For each key(loser), value(losses against winner): hash2[loser][winner] -= losses Which leaves hash2 as the second reduction Feel free to as me question or edit this to be more clear, I'm not sure of how to put it in a very eloquent way. Thanks!

  • Performing client-side OAuth authorized Twitter API calls versus server side, how much of a difference is there in terms of performance?

    - by Terence Ponce
I'm working on a Twitter application in Ruby on Rails. One of the biggest arguments that I have with other people on the project is the method of calling the Twitter API. Before, everything was done on the server: OAuth login, updating the user's Twitter data, and retrieving tweets. Retrieving tweets was the heaviest thing to do since we don't store the tweets in our database, so viewing the tweets means that we have to call the API every time. One of the people in the project suggested that we call the tweets through Javascript instead to lessen the load on the server. We used GET search, which, correct me if I'm wrong, will be removed when v1.0 becomes completely deprecated, but that really isn't a concern now. When the Twitter API has migrated completely to v1.1 (again, correct me if I'm wrong), every calls to the API must be authenticated, so we have to authenticate our Javascript requests to the API. As said here: We don't support or recommend performing OAuth directly through Javascript -- it's insecure and puts your application at risk. The only acceptable way to perform it is if you kept all keys and secrets server-side, computed the OAuth signatures and parameters server side, then issued the request client-side from the server-generated OAuth values. If we do exactly what Twitter suggests, the only difference between this and doing everything server-side is that our server won't have to contact the Twitter API anymore every time the user wants to view tweets. Here's how I would picture what's happening every time the user makes a request: If we do it through Javascript, it would be harder on my part because I would have to create the signatures manually for every request, but I will gladly do it if the boost in performance is worth all the trouble. Doing it through Ruby on Rails would be very easy since the Twitter gem does most of the grunt work already, so I'm really encouraging the other people in the project to agree with me. Is the difference in performance trivial or is it significant enough to switch to Javascript?
