• Loign Scren hangs after entering password in Ubuntu 12.04

  When I enter my password in the login box nothing happens. It is stucked there. It was running fine earlier. Actually, I installed the package gnome-panel and cairo-dock. Then I logged out and selected gnome classic session. Then I added a ppa from the webupd8.org to install the themes(link). I opened Ubuntu Tweak tool. When I changed the theme to Evolve the whole laptop stopped responding. None of my keyboard and mouse was working. So I was forced to do a forced shutdown. Now after restart I cannot login into ubuntu. I hear a loud sound of my laptop fan when the laptop is stucked. (Probably CPU will be at 100% when it stucked). Please help me. How can I login back to ubuntu? I am using ubuntu 12.04 and have installed all the latest updates..

• Change spacing of icons in Indicator Applet Complete, preferably by editing a config file?

  Changing icon spacing within Application Indicator Complete. If at all possible, I'd like to space them with about 1-3px between each one. https://launchpad.net/indicator-applet [Website] I'm using 12.04, and in GNOME Classic (No Effects). I'm working from a netbook (1024x600), and am trying to fit everything into one panel for the sake of screen conservation. Ironically, my netbook is often without reliable net access, and so a way to simply edit a config file or the like would be ideal, as opposed to downloading patches, modified packages, etc., but anything would be helpful. Even pointing me in the direction of how to start rebuilding the indicator to meet my needs (if need-be) would be welcome. Does anyone know of a method that would serve my purpose? EDIT: I've downloaded v0.4.93 from the site mentioned above, and took a look inside the archive. Couldn't find anything clearly alluding to object placement/size and such. Maybe just a pointer on where to find those params would do? EDIT 2: Some more info on my WM/DE: I'm pretty sure GNOME classic is gtk2 not gtk3, and equally sure my windows manager is metacity, as opposed to compiz. "equally sure" meaning i could be horribly wrong, but when I edit the metacity css file for my theme (which ive switched to "Adawaita"), it takes effect after logout/login. My inability to modify the spacing persists. Im gonna see if i can contact someone involved in its dev to get their input, will post results here if fruitful.

• HDMI & Display Port stopped work on 11.10

  After upgraded two laptops to 11.10, HDMI and Display ports stopped to work. Symptoms on each (btw. it used to work with 11.04 on both): laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 (HDMI, Intel GMX 3100): after HDMI cable is plugged in, screen is corrupted (no panel, no icons), system is unresponsive, TV set receives some signal, but only blue screen and some regular ticks can be heard. Unplugging the cable system recovers. No logs were checked. Thinkpad W510 (DisplayPort, NVidia). Simple "Screens" utility does not recognizes TV set, but this is something to do with the differences between Nvidia driver API and the one expected from the utility, as far I could spot on the net. However, using Nvidia-settings, TV is recognized, but cannot be enabled and used. Beside that, touch pad freezes after HDMI2DisplayPort connector is plugged in the laptop (not immediately, but after few seconds - probably after some handshake with the TV set crashes). It is strange that no such bug reports can be found on the net. So, I guess it is something wrong on our laptops only, but would appreciate some hints (i.e. any known changes recently related to HDMI, Display Port, X-Windows, kernel... wherever I should take a look and fix the issue).

• Lenovo ThinkPad W530 problem to activate the optical/DVD drive

  Problem Sometimes my notebook shows the optical drive as power off: But the hint there is not changing this state. Solution By looking in the device manager you see the next problem: So open the properties via right mouse click. This gives you the hint to remove the drive first. “Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)” Whether you select the comment by dragging the mouse over the the hidden part or pressing the button “Properties”. So we unplug and reinsert the ultrabay. If you think, now the system is working – you are wrong. Now the system is the meaning, that the ultrabay is unplugged. You could verify this by refresh the view in the device panel. Now there is no longer our device. Yet your great gig comes – unplug the ultra bay and reinsert it a second time! After this you could hear with a media inside, that the motor is really started and we have a working device What a difficult birth …

• Building MySQL with boost on windows

  As you've probably heard already MySQL needs boost to build. However, in the good ol' MySQL tradition, the above link does give you only the instructions on how to build it on linux. And completely ignores the fact that there're other OSes too that people develop on. To fill in that gap, I've compiled a small step by step guide on how to do it on windows. Note that I always, as a principle, build out-of-source. The typical setup I have is : bzr clone lp:~mysql/mysql-server/5.7 mysql-trunkcd mysql-trunkmkdir bldcd bldcmake -DWITH_DEBUG=1 -DMYSQL_PROJECT_NAME=mysql-trunk ..devenv /build debug mysql-trunk.sln This has been tested to work on a 32 bit compile using VS2013 on a Windows7 64 bit build. Note that you'll need other things too (bison, eventually openssl etc) that I will assume you already have set up. Steps: Download Boost 1.55.0. It's the *only* version that is known to work currently. Extract boost_1_55_0/ from the zip to c:\boost\boost_1_55_0 Go to Control Panel/System/Environment variables and set WITH_BOOST=C:\boost\boost_1_55_0 in User variables. Make sure you restart your open command line terminal windows after this !  If you're upgrading from non-boost build, remove your bld/ directory and create a new one. run cmake as you'd typically do. You should get: -- Local boost dir C:/boost/boost_1_55_0 -- Local boost zip LOCAL_BOOST_ZIP-NOTFOUND -- BOOST_VERSION_NUMBER is #define BOOST_VERSION 105500 -- BOOST_INCLUDE_DIR C:/boost/boost_1_55_0 Build as normal (devenv /build debug ...). It should work.

• Desktop runs very slick, animations are all fast and flawless. Moving windows around, however, is very laggy. Why?

  This isn't a question about Ubuntu being laggy in general - not at all, in fact, it's very slick and fast for me. Clicking the "Workspace Switcher" in the dock performs the animation immediately and very smoothly. Switching between workspaces with the arrow keys - again, flawlessly. My computer has a resolution of 2560x1440 on a 27" display (no, not an Apple product - though my monitor has the same panel that Apple use in their cinema displays). It's powered by an Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 - easily enough to handle it - and an Intel i3. Hardware is not the issue. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 (upgraded from 11.04). I had the same issue in 11.04. I'm running the "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (version current-updates)" from the additional drivers dialogue. Two drivers have been suggested to me via that dialogue and I've tried both - same effect with each. The driver is "activated and currently in use". Any other information required, let me know and I'll post it. I'm a programmer who works with Linux daily (both as a job and as an interest) so technical instructions are fine. I've noticed that Compiz uses a lot of CPU when moving windows around and it's memory usage is relatively high (though possibly expected for Compiz): 1671 user 20 0 478m 286m 33m S 1 7.3 12:44.05 compiz And one more thing - occasionally moving windows around is fast. But it only happens when all applications are closed, and even then it sometimes doesn't. Something must be interfering, but what? I'll try and find out but in the meantime, any suggestions are much appreciated :-)

• I failed FizzBuzz, would you hire me? [closed]

  I'm a developer with a CS degree and have work experience doing development in a number of languages for almost 3 years. Today had an interview (2nd interview) with a panel of people. Overall it went quite well, I prepared for most of the questions and felt ready for anything. At the end of the interview, they gave me ONE programming question...a problem like FizzBuzz (without the print the number part). I believe I made too many mistakes and thus have "failed" it. Is all hope lost for me? Here is my code: void FizzBuzz() { for(int i = 0; i <= 100; i++) { bool isThree = i % 3; bool isFive = i % 5; if (isThree) { print "Fizz\n"; } else if(isFive) { print "Buzz\n"; } else { print "FizzBuzz\n"; } } } As you can see I messed up the bools which should have the syntax i % 3 == 0; If I'm remembering the question right I also put an else instead of an elseif with isThree && isFive. I was quite stressed, but that's no excuse for missing a simple problem. So the question is, if my work history and personality fit with the job and this is the only code you've seen, would you hire me?

• WPF TreeView MouseDown

  I've got something like this in a TreeView: <DataTemplate x:Key="myTemplate"> <StackPanel MouseDown="OnItemMouseDown"> ... </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> Using this I get the mouse down events if I click on items in the stack panel. However... there seems to be another item behind the stack panel that is the TreeViewItem - it's very hard to hit, but not impossible, and that's when the problems start to occur. I had a go at handling PreviewMouseDown on TreeViewItem, however that seems to require e.Handled = false otherwise standard tree view behaviour stops working. Ok, Here's the source code... • Server.transfer causing HttpException

  I am developing a C#/SQL ASP.NET web application in VS 2008. Currently I am using the Server.Transfer method to transfer control from one ASPX.CS file to another ASPX file. The first time through, this works. But after control is transferred to this new file it encounters a condition: if (restart == false) { where "restart" is a boolean variable. After this statement it immediately transfers control back to the same ASPX.CS file and tries to reexecute the Server.Transfer method. This time it gives me the following exception and stack trace. Do you know what is causing this? I tried to read this but it didn't make much sense to me. • SQL Developer Q&A from ODTUG Tips & Tricks Webcast

  Another great webcast yesterday – if you’re a paying member of ODTUG you can watch the show for yourself in their archives. If not, you can get my slide deck off of SlideShare. About 150 of you brave souls sat through an entire hour of me talking and then 10 more minutes of Q&A. We went through everything rapid-fire style, so I thought I would post the questions and my refined answers here for your perusal. In the order in which I received them: You showed the preference to choose between resultsets in same tab or ain a new tab. I understand that we can not have it both using different hotkeys? For example: F5 run and resultset to same tab, ctrl-f5 same but to new tab? Sometimes you want the one other times the other. The questioner is asking about this preference, Tools Preferences Database Worksheet ‘Show query results in new tabs.’ This is an all or nothing proposition. But, there’s another, perhaps better way: the document PINs. If you have a result set you don’t want to lose, ‘pin it.’ Pin multiple result sets or plans for review and comparisons. You mentioned that sometimes it’s hard to remember where a certain preference is. I agree. So enhancement request: add a search-box to the preferences window. Maybe like in, for example, UltraEdit. It shows you all preferences containing your search criteria. Actually, we do have a search mechanism type the search string, we auto-filter the preferences Is there a version of SQL Developer that will connect to an 8i database (Yes, I realize how old that database version is!) Sorry, no. We also don’t have a version that will run on Windows 3.11 for Workgroups…probably. How do we access your blog? Carefully, and with much trepidation. When you’re ready, go to http://www.thatjeffsmith.com Is there a way to get good formatting with predefined settings? I believe the questioner is referring to the script output a la SQL*Plus formatting commands. Yes, there is. You can build your formatting commands into your login.sql script, and those will be applied for your script execution sessions. Example here. Why this version 4.0 doesn’t support external plugins? It does, it just requires the plugin developer to re-factor it for OSGi. This came about when we updated the JDeveloper framework to the later 11g/12c stuff. Any change in hookup with SVN? The only change with Subversion is that internally we’re using 1.7 stuff now. You can use SQLDev to work with a 1.8 SVN server, but if you get a working copy with a 1.8 client SQLDev won’t be able to do anything with it… Command line utilities ? improvements Yes! The long answer is here. Is that a Hint or a Comment?? /*CSV*/ It’s a comment – the database won’t recognize it, but SQLDev does when it goes through our statement pre-processor. We’ll redirect the output through our CSV formatter before displaying the results in the Script Output panel. That’s why this will ONLY work in SQL Developer. Are you selecting “”Run Script”" to get that CSV or HTML output, rather than “”Run Statement”"? Yes, the formatter hints like the CSV one mentioned above only make sense in a script output panel vs a grid. How do you save relational models once they’re defined? I’ve had trouble with setting one up, “”saving”" it, then the design work I did is longer there when loading it later. File – Data Modeler – Save. If you’re running the Modeler inside of SQL Developer, the menu’ing interface can get a bit tricky. That’s why I recommend using the stand along if you’re doing anything with a model that takes more than 5 minutes. See how the Data Modeler menus are folded up under the SQL Dev menus? Can u unplug and plug into another container in a database with only sqldeveloper? Yes, you can ‘Detach’ a multitentant 12c Database ‘pluggable’ and plug it into another instance. You have the option to copy or move the files. This isn’t a trivial operation, pay attention Can you run APEX code directly on the adopter? No, at least not as I understand your question. Give me an example and I can give you a better example. Is there a way that when u click on a particular table it wouldn’t show the table with the info but just to see the columns underneath clicking on the node? Yes, another one of my tips! Disable Tools Preferences Datbase ObjectViewer ‘Open Object on Single Click.’ Is there a patch to allow a double click on a procedure on an open package body to take you to that procedure in the editor? This has been fixed for EA3 – to be released soon. Can you open the spec with the body? You can open the spec or the body, and then also open the other. But you can’t open both with a single click. So if you want you can set it to CSV but can you also see it as a regular result set in rows and then click in the results to export to excel? If you run your query as a statement with Ctrl-Enter, you can send the data to Excel via the Export dialog. Will it do intellisense like using the alias and pop up the column, object names? Yes! You can select more than one column… Can a DBA turn off items from a high level for users so the only thing they can perform would be selects? A DBA should turn things ON, not OFF. Create a user with only CONNECT and required SELECT privs and you’re good to go, regardless of which application they are using. I use PL/SQL Developer from allround automations and was SQL Developer illiterate and now I like this for myself as a DBA. Now I get to train developers on this tool since they have been asking how to use this tool. Thank you. No, THANK YOU! Can you run multi queries in the worksheet after you added it to the worksheet? Yes, highlight what you want to run, and hit Ctrl-Enter. Can you export the result sets to excel, etc. Yes. In version 4.0 and going forward, I recommend you use the XLSX option for exports. It will run faster and consume much, much less memory. Will this be available after the webinar? If you are a ODTUG member, check out the webinar recordings in the archives. That’s worth the $99 right there. Ask your boss if they have $99 in their training budget for you. If not, maybe time to look for another job? Can you run command lines from this tool? Like executes without issuing a command line prompt? Ok, I’m stumped on this one. Not sure what you’re asking. You can setup external tools under the Tools menu, and from there you could probably rig what you’re looking for, but I’m not sure what you’re looking for… This maybe?Where and when to put the program Is there any way to save a copy database command set (certain tables/views etc) in a script? Yes! Create a cart with the objects you want to be used in the Copy. Then use the new command-line interface to kick off SQL Developer to do the copy of those said objects. How can we export the preference and then import them into different or same version of SQL Developer ? Today, there’s no interface for this. But you could copy the files around manually…Kris Rice has a cool idea where you can set your preferences to be saved to your local drop box folder and then you can use SQL Developer from anywhere with the same preferences What happens to SQL*Plus commands like COL & BREAK Nothing. Those are not currently supported. Is there a place where all “”hotkey”" functionality is listed? thanks Yes. Tools – Preferences – Shortcut Keys. And you can change them! Any tips for the DBA side of things? will the SQL generated for objects have more information (e.g. user privileges) in v4? You can get this now. In Tools – Preferences – Database – Utilities – Export, check ‘Grants.’ Voila! You now have the code necessary to recreate your object privileges Is there a limit on the number of rows that could be imported / exported from/to excel ? The only hard-coded limit lies in Excel. For best performance, use v4 and XLSX formats for Exports. Is there a way to see/watch active sessions to see current SQL and the explain plan being used, etc. Kind of like that frog product. Cough, yes. Tools – Monitor Sessions. Click on session, see SQL and plan. The plan was added in v4. If you’re not in version 4, use the Reports – Active Sessions to get the plans. In the DBA section is there a way to manage say tablespaces to add data files, shrink, edit profiles, etc. Yes, we support all of that. View – DBA. Connect, go to the Storage node. I have NO idea what you’re talking about, WINK-WINK. No, it’s not in v4.0. Is there a “”handy”" way to debug trigger code? Yes, open your trigger. Hit the debug button.   I went to the Environment Variables in 'System' in the control panel and made 2 new variables. one for user variables and one for system variables, both named JAVA_HOME and both pointing to C:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin but for some reason, I still get the below error when running a java command... • Safari Extjs grid rendering issue

  Hello: Here is a simple illustration of what I mean. It works in IE, and FF, but not in Safari. I have four panels which are dynamically added to a tabpanel item. Three are grid panels, and one is a form panel. I need to preserve the grids proportions or sizes. I tried several layout methods (table, column, absolute etc), and nothing seems work so far. For table layout, all sizes end up being the same width. It seems my best bet is column layout, and they seem to render properly in FF, IE, but not in Safari as shown in the image. (Here it seems that column goes to second row, when the item does not fit into the current row). Initially, the title bar, and several of the column headings does not show. Any suggestions. • Embed SQL Password into Crystal Reports RPT file?

  We are experimenting with Crystal Reports viewers such as this one: http://www.thereportviewer.com/ ... which can actually re-connect to the data source and re-run a Crystal Reports RPT file with live data. However when running the report the viewer asks for a password to connect to the data source (in this case SQL Server). Does Crystal Reports have some way of embedding a connection password into a RPT file to avoid this? Or should I be using a System DSN from the Control Panel/ODBC thing to get around this? I figure someone else must have had this problem.

  I replaced ActivePerl with Strawberry Perl on my WinXP last week. I found I must run my Perl script with the command of perl myperl.pl; otherwise I only need run myperl.pl before install Strawberry. How can I only run myperl.pl as before? I checked my environment configuration as below.   Hi, Just starting with ASP.Net MVC and have hit a bit of a snag regarding validation messages. I've a custom validation attribute assigned to my class validate several properties on my model. When this validation fails, we'd like the error message to contain XHTML mark-up, including a link to help page, (this was done in the original WebForms project as a ASP:Panel). At the moment the XHTML tags such as "< a ", in the ErrorMessage are being rendered to the screen. Is there any way to get the ValidationSummary to render the XHTML markup correctly? Or is there a better way to handle this kind of validation? Thanks
