  • Upgrading from Express Edition to Standard Edition

    - by TiborKaraszi
Say you encounter an SQL Server which is Express Edition, and it really should have been some higher edition. Sounds familiar? It is common for me as a consultant to find plenty of SQL Servers at a customer's site. Many of the databases in these will be moved (typically using backup and restore) to a "real" SQL Server. But in some cases, this might not be desirable. You want to convert the whole instance, from Express to a "real" SQL Server edition. I'm attending a great SharePoint course for Daniel...(read more)

  • Ubuntu Server 12.04 Samba Server timeout

    - by phileaton
I am a beginner with servers. I checked the error logs for Samba and it appears that Samba is timing out when I transfer large files. I can successfully add PDFs for instance to my file server. However, I tried to add a large 1.2Gb video file and it did not succeed. This is the error in the log: smbd/process.c:244(read_packet_remainder) read_fd_with_timeout failed for client 0.0.0.0 read error = NT_STATUS_CONNECT$ Is there a way I can stop it from timing out? Any pointers would be great! Thanks!

  • MIX10: Yet another way to view video content sessions using their OData feed

Well, MIX10 is over. It was a great time to meet a lot of people and see friends from afar. As anyone knows, the networking is a HUGE part of being in-person at any conferencethat vibe, value and friendship cannot be matched online. But the sessions there were a TON of them. It is quite impossible to be in 3 places at one time. Thankfully the MIX team recorded all regular sessions and make them available for viewing online or offline. • How to Create a Custom Refresh Image in Windows 8

    - by Taylor Gibb
We have already shown you how to use the Refresh and Reset features in Windows 8, now we are back to show you how you can create a custom refresh image. This means next time you refresh your Windows 8 PC, you can use a custom image instead of the one that shipped with your PC. When you refresh your PC, all your files as well as Metro applications that you downloaded from the Windows store are kept. This is great, however, all your non-metro applications and PC settings are removed. If you are like me and have a lot of non-metro apps this can be very annoying, but you can fix this by creating a refresh image that already has your apps installed and your settings tweaked. 6 Start Menu Replacements for Windows 8 What Is the Purpose of the “Do Not Cover This Hole” Hole on Hard Drives? • Data Warehouse Workshop

    - by Davide Mauri
I’m really really pleased to announce that it’s possible to register to the Data Warehouse Workshop that I and Thomas Kejser developed togheter.  Several months ago we decided to join forces in order to create a workshop that would contain not only the theoretical stuff, but also the experience we both have and all the best practices and lesson learned that can make the difference between a success and a failure when building a Data Warehouse. The first sheduled date is 7 February in Kista (Sweden): http://www.eventzilla.net/web/event?eventid=2138965081 and until 30th November there is the Super Early Bird to save more the 100€ (150$). The workshop will be very similar to the one I delivered at PASS Summit summit, with some extra technical stuff since it’s one hour longer. In addition to that for this first version both me and Thomas will be present, so it’s a great change  to make sure you super-charge your DW/BI project with insights that aren’t available anywhere else! If you’re into the BI field and you live in Europe, don’t miss this opportunity!

  • What significant lost advances on side tracks should be revived in the main stream of software?

    - by C.W.Holeman II
In reading Alan Kay's question on Significant new inventions I was coming up with answers that were not new ideas but old ones that have been passed by in the main stream. So, what significant lost advances that happened on a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

  • Oculus Rift with Antichamber

    - by Scott Hainline
Antichamber runs great on linux (steam version). But it is not playable with the Oculus Rift at this point. The issues are: 1) no headtracking 2) graphics are not being split and distorted by Oculus SDK My current plan is to use LD_PRELOAD to add the functionality, this seems to be the linux equivalent of DLL injection. Antichamber appears to be using SDL, I'm hoping this can be configured to use the headtracking data as a joystick and apply the graphics distortion, but I am not sure which functions I should be looking for. Is there a simpler way of getting these issues resolved? Is SDL the right choice here? Would appreciate any information on how the Unreal Engine 3 works under linux; and library injection too.

  • Scale DIV with tiles

    - by user15350
I am trying to create a repeating background. I have a main DIV with a grid of small 16x16 DIVs. I am trying to scale the main DIV in CSS; when the small DIVs simply have a red background color everything works great, but when there is a background image in the small DIVs then borders become visible between the tiles. This image explains the problem: http://cl.ly/FpNW/o Check the HTML in these examples: With BG-COLOR: http://jsfiddle.net/pTLXw/ With BG-IMG: http://jsfiddle.net/vkpuY/ Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how to fix it? If it is not possible to fix while using DIV, is there another way to do this? Thanks you so much!

  • How can I allow a user to stream my videos securely?

    - by John Baber
I've got a script that records 10 minute videos from a webcam to video1.mp4 video2.mp4 video3.mp4 video4.mp4 Then records over video1 again in rotation. I'd like one user to be able to view these in winamp or itunes by having a playlist with the four of them on repeat. (This is my way of getting around the many hours of figuring out how to actually livestream from a webcam with VLC). I don't see any examples of things like icecast being used for video, and I don't see any mentions of secure streaming. My question is, is there any way to have these videos be seen securely? I can do things like https on my server, but I don't have great access to the user's machine, so just sharing a directory by samba or sshfs isn't much of an option.

  • using heightmap to simulate 3d in an isometric 2d game

    - by VaTTeRGeR
I saw a video of an 2.5d engine that used heightmaps to do zbuffering. Is this hard to do? I have more or less no idea of Opengl(lwjgl) and that stuff. I could imagine, that you compare each pixel and its depthmap to the depthmap of the already drawn background to determine if it gets drawn or not. Are there any tutorials on how to do this, is this a common problem? It would already be awesome if somebody knows the names of the Opengl commands so that i can go through some general tutorials on that. greets! Great 2.5d engine with the needed effect, pls go to the last 30 seconds Edit, just realised, that my question wasn't quite clear expressed: How can i tell Opengl to compare the existing depthbuffer with an grayscale texure, to determine if a pixel should get drawn or not?

  • Peer code review for full application

    - by bswinnerton
My sincerest apologies if this is the wrong place to post something like this, but this seemed like the best fit. I was wondering if there are any websites or resources for a full site peer code review. I'm new to Ruby specifically and want to make sure that my logic is following the overall best standards. I've pieced together multiple different tutorials and I feel like while my understanding is getting better, it'd be great if the overall structure of such an application could be critiqued, and for someone that doesn't really know another Ruby developer - I find that I've run into a roadblock and don't want to develop bad habits now.

  • Does anyone know of any work being done on EEE transformer?

    - by Matthew
I recently got a (few) nexus 7's to install and enjoy ubuntu on. Which is great and all, but from what I've read online and the issues I have experienced myself the Nexus 7 has way to many serious defects. Such as: Audio jack not working Screen lifting Screen ghosting out (The very first one) Instant drop in battery life (happened to one of mine) Internal memory malfunctions (The latest issue I've had, the internal memory went completely bad) If you need to read other horror stories you can simply check out XDA developers forum, lots of people are having issues. I'd really like to enjoy ubuntu on a different device, I think the Transformer prime would make way more sense (usability and stability wise). Have there been any hacks/mods to get it running on this device?

  • Blender 2.63a window position unstable with dual monitor extended desktop

    - by Steve Smith
I have two 1920 x 1200 HP monitors and running Ubuntu 12.10. If I set them up as an extended desktop, (both 1280 x 1024 positioned for 2048 x 1280, all my applications work fine EXCEPT Blender (even Inkscape). Blender works great on a single monitor but always defaults to a window size that uses all available real estate and it can't do that with 2048 x 1280. It launches, but jumps all over the screen. Does any know a way to start Blender in a fixed size window so it would run in just one monitor?

  • SQL Server v.Next (Denali) : Why you should start testing early

    - by AaronBertrand
Denali is coming, whether you like it or not. You may not be an early adopter and you may not have plans on your current calendar, but at some point you will need to move your apps and databases to this release - or one very much like it. There are a lot of great new features you will be able to take advantage of, but not everything is a double rainbow. There are some changes that will break your spirit if you let them. What does it mean? I go over several breaking changes in my presentation that...(read more)
