• /usr/src is eating up all inodes

  it seems /usr/src (apparently old kernels) used up all my inodes Dateisystem Inodes IBenutzt IFrei IUse% Eingehängt auf /dev/sda4 489600 489600 0 100% / devtmpfs 219658 539 219119 1% /dev none 219844 474 219370 1% /run none 219844 3 219841 1% /run/lock none 219844 8 219836 1% /run/shm /dev/sda6 5963776 8361 5955415 1% /home tried everything to remove/purge etc. the old kernels, without success.. dpkg is not working anymore, tried a few manual commands but 12.04 gives me nothing. apt-get etc. is not possible due to lack of space on the hard drive...which is not the problem obviously. however cannot install/ remove anything! read a lot about users with the same problem, but their solutions are not working for me. Anyone out there who could help? thanks a lot!

• 14.04_x64 / Nvidia GT 240 , HUGE font notificaton at greeter and in naulitus after log-in

  I've been using 12.04 for a long time - excellent version indeed, I decided to try 14.04 today. Installing without any problems. My VGA is Nvidia GT240 (legacy one), Nouveau display driver is fine, font display is normal. Then, I decided to install Nvidia legacy binary driver 304.117 updates (proprietary) instead of default Nouveau display driver. Problems come after rebooting At Greeter a notification "Wired connection 1 -Connected" pop up but with a HUGE font. After log-in HUGE FONT symptom still remains at some parts - for example, Calendar, Desktop shortcut and Files explorer. within few seconds, 10 to 15 may be, there is a screen blink but HUGE font still remains. I have to log out then log in again to have normal font in all parts of system. Changing driver, even an update one form ppa:xorg-edgersnot doesn't solve the problem. Any advices or solutions will be appreciated.

  This is the obligatory first posting in which I describe to you my plans for this blog and why you should read it. My plan is very simple – to share with you (and possibly myself along the way) relevant information about tools and techniques that you can use (or perhaps shouldn’t use) to solve problems with code. Most of my employers have paid me to develop solutions using Microsoft tools and technologies, so you will see them heavily represented here. I also plan to avoid having this blog function simply as a link aggregator, so I promise that it will be rare for you to find entries in my blog consisting solely of a link to someone else’s blog or a webcast – if I do have such links they will at least be accompanied by commentary. This is my first venture into the world of blogging, so please let me know how I'm doing (be nice) and feel free to suggest/request topics for future entries.

• Should I try to write simple key-value storage by myself?

  I need a key-value storage in a simplest form we can think of. Keys should be some fixed-length strings, values should be some texts. This key-value storage should have an HTTP-backed API. That's basically it. As you can see, there is no big difference between such storage and some web application with some upload functionality. The thing is - it'll take few hours (including tests and coffee drinking) to write something like this. "Something like this" will be fully under my control and can be tuned on demand. Should I, in this specific case, not try to reinvent bicycles? Is it better to use some of existing NoSQL solutions. If yes, which one exactly? If, say, I'd needed something SQL-like, I won't ask and won't try to write something by myself. But with NoSQL I just don't know what is adequate and what is not.

  I have been on many development teams and as the team matures decisions about direction are made. These decisions often come back up over and over. Like why don't we fill in this field why didn't we use memcache over a custom solutions. These decisions add up over time and become a significant part of style guides coding standards and unit tests. My question is I have never run into a good way of tracking these decisions or the discovery that went into making them. Does anyone have a best practice.

  I've run into an issue that breaks my collisions. Here's my method: Gather Input Project Rectangle Check for intersection and ispassable Update The update method is built on object_position * seconds_passed * velocity * speed. Input changes velocity and is normalized if 1. This method works well with just one object comparison, however I pass a list or a for loop to the collision detector and velocity gets changed back to a non zero when the list hits an object that passes the test and the object can pass through. Any solutions would be much appreciated. Side note is there a more proper way to simulate movement?

  I want to permanently mount a few Windows shared folders. I googled that topic and found a lot of good answers, but with all the solutions I have a little problem: I believe I can't properly give an address of shared folder. I can find it following way: "Network" - "Windows Network" - "WORKGROUP_name" - "Computer_name" - and there is some folder i would like to mount. How can I write the path to the folders in terminal? UPD i can access needed folder throw address in location bar smb://server/ro/, but i try mount it by editing /etc/fstab file (using guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently) i get error mount error: could not resolve address for server: Unknown error PS in /etc/fstab : //SERVER/RO /media/server cifs username=user,password=pwd, uid=1000,iocharset=utf8 0 0

  I am implementing customer specific code and currently following simple approach like if (cusomterId == 23) do it. I want to separate out all the customer related code in separate place. But I have following problems. In code is in 1. Stored procs 2. Plain old classes. 3. Controllers 4. Views I came up with two solutions. First is to create table CustomerFunctionlity with columns CustomerId, FunctionalityName, method/Proc, inputs/outputs With this table I can simply check if exists, execute given function.   I am looking to a book covering adavnced programming techniques, covering different practical scenarios and describing the different challanges with the relative solutions. As example, which are the best ways to implement a module for buying on a web application with credit card or how to manage responsivenes for the frontend of the web application itself (dealing with cache, optimeze plugins, etc). On the web there are tons of tutorials about these topics, but I am looking for a book where such cases are collected all together and treated by real professionists. If the book would provide some code samples, that would be a plus (especially if C# .NET), but I am more interested in the approach/solution rather than the code details. I could not find any of these cases in the general book about programming, therefore I hope someone might point me in the right direction. EDIT: I have 4 years experience as web developer, mainly with Microsoft (C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server) and client side technologies (jQuery, HTML/CSS).

  I am finishing up my bachelor's degree in computer science and am feeling somewhat burnt out in the field. I enjoy solving problems, programming, and using computers to find said solutions, but I feel that I never really concentrated on anything in particular and so I don't have any specialties or a path in technology to follow. I feel like a 'generic programmer' with nothing special to offer. My question is, where can I look to find this niche? I have interest in the environment, nature, sustainability, and other similar things. Is there something in these areas in particular where specialists are needed? • Why can't I log into Lubuntu after the 13.04 update, even if I know the password?

  After the 13.04 update the login screen started to appear, even though I chose to automatically login in the Lubuntu install options one week ago. Even if my password and username is correct it won't login, it will just come back to the login screen. When I press ALT-CTRL-F1 at the login screen I am able to login perfectly, but I have no GUI and I'm kind of lost on that field. WHat is going?Is it just a bug? • In-memory DB to perform intersects on set slices

  I have a specific programming need where I need to efficiently store large sorted sets in memory, query them for ranges, and intersect them against other sets that are also queried for ranged. I am looking at Redis, but I can't see a range slice command. MongoDB can only use 1 index, so it has to perform row-level scans, whereas I wish to process using columns that are intersected. I'm also looking at Counchbase, but can't easily determine from the documentation if it is suited to this. I know it uses Memcached, which is AFAIK not suited to this usage. Could anyone share potential solutions for this specific problem? EDIT For example, I need to perform the following: Get the IDs of all cars where the price is between 2000 and 3000, and intersect that will all cars where the engine capacity is between 3000 and 4000.

  I'm actually trying to upgrade my Ubuntu 11.04 server to 12.04, but I have to go through 11.10 first, right? Well, do-release-upgrade is failing miserably. I found this question, which appears to have similar errors, but I've tried all of the suggestions given there and nothing has changed. I tried running apt-get dist-upgrade; it churned for a while and eventually came back with "Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?" Ran apt-get update and got much the same kinds of error messages I got from do-release-upgrade. Any ideas/suggestions/solutions? Should I try downloading & upgrading from the CD instead? I'm glad to provide any further information I've forgotten.
