• How can I share Configuration Settings across multiple projects in Visual Studio?

  Ok I know this may be a design issue, so I would love to have remarks on that as well. I have a Visual Studio web application solution. I have three projects as UserInterface, BusinessLogic and DataAccess. I had to store some user defined settings and I created configSections in the config file. I access these configSections through classes which inherit from .NET's ConfigurationSection base class. So in short for every project I had a separate configSection and for that corresponding configSection I had a class in that project inheriting from ConfigurationSection to access the config section settings. This works all sweet. But the problem arises if there is any setting which I need to use across multiple projects. So If I need to use a setting defined in UserInterface project configSection in, let say, BusinessLogic project I have to actually make a copy of that setting in the BusinessLogic's configSection. This ends up having the same setting copied across multiple configSections. Isn't this a bit too redundant?

  Currently all web apps are deployed using seperate config files: <!-- <import bean.... production/> --> <import bean... development/> This has disadvantages, even if you only need to swap out one config file, that I'm sure everyone is familiar with (wondering what just deployed without searching through XML is one of them) I want to add Logging to my application that basically says 'RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE', with a description of the services deployed and what mode they are working in. RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE Client Service - Production Messaging Service - Local and so on... Is this possible in Spring using a conventional deployment (putting a war on a server)? What other things do people do to manage deployments and software configurations? If not, what other ways could you achieve something similar?

• IIS Virtual Directory/Application & Forms authentication

  I've setup and deployed a simple forms authentication website with membership using .NET 4. I've created a virtual directory (now converted to "Application") in IIS7 and setup the web.config file in the virtual directory as follows: <system.webServer> <directoryBrowse enabled="true" /> </system.webServer> Great! I browse to the virtual directory: ../mydomain/books/ and I'm automatically redirected to the login page specified by web.config in my root directory and the url path is placed as follows: ../Account/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fbooks At this point, I login succesfully, but I am not redirected anywhere, and when I manually return to the directory, ../books, I'm sent back to the login page, where I'm already logged in? So I'm confused about what my problem is! I should be successfully authenticated, and than redirected back to the directory, or at the very least be able to view it manually after I log in right?

• CakePHP 'Cake is NOT able to connect to the database'

  I've looked at this post about a similar issue: CakePHP: Can't access MySQL database and I've tried everything they mentioned in there including: Changing my database.php so that the 'port' attribute for both $default and $test are the location of my mysqld.sock file Changing the 'port' attribute to the actual integer that represents the port in my my.cnf mysql config Changing the mysql socket locations in php.ini to the location of my mysqld.sock file I'm using ubuntu 11.04, apache 2.2.17, mysql 5.1.54, and CakePHP 1.3.10. My install of mysql and apache don't seem to match any conventions, as in, all the config files are there, they are all just in really weird places--I'm not sure why that is, but I've tried reinstalling both programs multiple times with the same results... At any rate, I can log into mysql from the terminal and use it normally, and apache is working because I can see the CakePHP default homepage. I just can't get it to change the message 'Cake is NOT able to connect to the database'. SOLVED: Figured it out, had to change php.ini so that extension_dir pointed to the correct directory and had to add a line extension=mysql.so.

• Devise email confirmation from localhost

  I am able to get the registration confirmation email to send out in deployment on Heroku, but when I try a registration on localhost:3000, I get the following error: undefined local variable or method `confirmed_at' for #<User:0xb67a1ff0> In my config/environments/production.rb file I have: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => 'xxxx.com' } And I have an initializer file with the following format: ActionMailer::Base.smtp_settings = { :user_name => "[email protected]", :password => "xxxxxx", :domain => "xxxx.com", :address => "smtp.sendgrid.net", :port => "xxx", :authentication => :plain, :enable_starttls_auto => true }; What settings do I need to get the localhost working?   We build a system that handling the billing analyse and what it does it just have a raw bill from vendor and process to "common" table and this is using SQL Server 2005 Integration Services. At the moment, the batch has 300,000 rows and it took about 6 minutes to process. Now, the current spec are: 2 CPUs Intel Xeon E5345 @ 2.33 GHz RAM 4GB Is there anyway I can speed up this process?

• Access Rules created by WSAT are not enforced

  Hi, I'm trying to implement roles in my site. There are several projects in the solution, one of which is a web application. In that web application, I'm trying to use WSAT to create three roles. There are many folders for the application. I've used WSAT to define role based access rules for each folder. However, when I debug and navigate to those pages, they do not redirect to a login and show me the protected page. There are web.config files in each folder. Why would the system not enforce these rules? My web.config file has: I've tested the connections in WSAT and they work. Any ideas?

• OpenRasta overwriting Content-Length header in HEAD responses

  I'm creating a pretty simple HTTP service using OpenRasta. For HEAD requests, the HTTP 1.1 spec states that HEAD requests should have the Content-Length set to "the size of the entity-body that would have been sent had the request been a GET" (section 14.13). However, OpenRasta apparently sees that the response body is empty and automatically sets the Content-Length header to "0". What is the recommended way to override this behavior? Thanks-

  Hello guys, I'm trying to use ASP.NET MVC to my new project and have been expected that the user authentication should be rather simple there. My goal is to have a separate user database table in my main database. I thought that the SqlTableProfileProvider should be the solution. So I added the corresponding table into my database and changed the web.config file. But it seems no matter what I change there, my web application still using the default authentication (via ASPNETDB.mdf file). What could be the problem? (my web.config file beginning is:)

Windows Server 2003 has been built to test the application. The database has been scripted across using MS SQL Server GUI. ASP.Net application services tables were created using an utility. The connection strings are stored in the web.config and connectionStrings.config. The application connects to the database successfully, but then it times out after 10 seconds.

• Get wrong PATH_INFO after rewriting in lighttpd

  In my lighttpd config file, I have a rewrite rule like this: $HTTP["host"] == "sub.example.com" { url.rewrite = ( "^/(.*)" => "/sub/$1" ) } So when a user visits http://sub.example.com, she's actually visiting http://example.com/sub. The problem is that the PATH_INFO seems wrong, URL: http://sub.example.com/extra PATH_INFO: expected: /extra what I get: /sub/extra Now whenever I call request.get_path(), it returns something like http://sub.example.com/sub/extra, which is not what I want. Of course, I can just override the get_path method of the request class, but I wonder if there is a simpler way like changing the lighttpd config?

In case, updating database is successful but file operation fails, should I write file-rollback method for this? Moreover, file operation in EJB container violates EJB spec. What’s your opinion? • "Cleanly" Deploying an ASP.NET Application with LINQ to SQL Server

  In my development environment, my SQL Server is PHILIP\SQLEXPRESS. In testing, it's ANNIE, and the live environment will have a third name yet to be determined. I would have assumed that updating the following statement in web.config would have been enough: <add name="MyConnectionString"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" connectionString="Data Source=PHILIP\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=MyDtabase;Integrated Security=True" /> When using SqlConnection, SqlCommand, SqlDataReader and friends, that's all it took. Using LINQ, it doesn't seem to work that nicely. I see the servername repeated in my .dbml file as well as in Settings.settings. After changing it in all of those places, I get it to work. However if I'm doing a few deployments per day during testing, I want to avoid this regimen. My question is: is there a programmatic solution for LINQ to SQL that will allow me to specify the connection string once, preferably in web.config, and get everybody else to refer to it?

• Converting LDAP from Tomcat to GlassFish

  Hi, I have a simple web-app that is developed in Netbeans(6.8) and works fine in Tomcat(6) using LDAP(Active Directory). I need to convert this to an EE (JSF2), so I am moving from Tomcat to GlassFish(v3). I have changed the web files to xhtml and configured the xml files. However, I cannot get the GlassFish LDAP configuration to authenticate. I am attaching my old web.xml and server.xml (from Tomcat) snippets and the portions of the new web.xml, sun-web.xml, and the GlassFish configuration. If anyone can help me figure out where I am missing the piece that will allow a user to be authenticated, I would appreciate it. (btw, I am not using roles, just authenticating against the LDAP db is good enought.) As it is right now, my app will prompt me to enter a user when I try to access a file in the 'protected' area and the GlassFish server throws an exception when it fails to authenticate. Because it works under Tomcat, I know I have the right information, I just don't know how to format it to get GlassFish to pass it along. Thanks.   The list of valid XML characters is well known, as defined by the spec it's: #x9 | #xA | #xD | [#x20-#xD7FF] | [#xE000-#xFFFD] | [#x10000-#x10FFFF] My question is whether or not it's possible to make a PCRE regular expression for this (or its inverse) without actually hard-coding the codepoints, by using Unicode general categories. An inverse might be something like [\p{Cc}\p{Cs}\p{Cn}], except that improperly covers linefeeds and tabs and misses some other invalid characters.

• What is the exact rule of jQuery's animate() parameters?

  jQuery 1.4.2's animate() API spec is .animate( properties, [ duration ], [ easing ], [ callback ] ) but it seems that we can supply duration, callback, and no easing .animate({left: '+= 100'}, 600, doThis) and it will work. But if we supply easing and callback and no duration .animate({left: '+=100'}, 'swing', doThis) then the easing won't be taken into effect. So what exactly is the API supposed to be?

• json specifies "any UNICODE character"?

  Maybe this is just my unfamiliarity with unicode, so please correct me if I'm mistaken. Looking at http://json.org/, the spec says that a string can include "any UNICODE character", but this confuses me. JSON is a communication format correct? At the core of it, everything must translate down to bytes. In contrast, UNICODE is a logical format and must be encoded to be able to transmit it, right? So what did they mean there?

This allows me to create classes like this: public abstract class A { public void Main() { // it's full of logic! } } This is really a concrete class; it's only abstract in so far as one can't instantiate it. If inheritors don't actually have to provide implementation, then why call it abstract?

Any ideas??

• How do I set a property to the output of a command in msbuild/xbuild

  In msbuild/xbuild I'd like to have a "libPath" property which can be ovveridden on the commandline using /p:libpath="/path/to/all/libs". But when this property is undefined I want to call pkg-config --retrieve-Path somePackage to get the current systems path. I thought like here I need the output of a command to be stored in a Property. The command always returns one line of output. I have tryied something like <PropertyGroup> <LibPath /> </PropertyGroup> <Task ....> <Exec Command="pkg-config --retrieve-Path somePackage" Condition="$(LibPath)' == ''"> <OutputTaskParameter="output" PropertyName="LibPath" /> </Exec> </Task> But that didn't work.
