  • Suggest an alternative way to organize/build a database solution.

    We are using Visual Studio 2010, but this was first conceived with VS2003. I will forward the best suggestions to my team. The current setup almost makes me vomit. It is a C# solution with most projects containing .sql files. Because we support Microsoft, Oracle, and Sybase, and so home-brewed a pre-processor, much like C preprocessor, except that substitutions are performed by a home-brewed C# program without using yacc and tools like that. #ifdefs are used for conditional macro definitions, and yeah - macros are the way this is done. A macro can expand to another macro or two, but this should eventually terminate. Only macros have #ifdef in them - the rest of the SQL-like code just uses these macros. Now, the various configurations: Debug, MNDebug, MNRelease, Release, SQL_APPLY_ALL, SQL_APPLY_MSFT, SQL_APPLY_ORACLE, SQL_APPLY_SYBASE, SQL_BUILD_OUTPUT_ALL, SQL_COMPILE, as well as 2 more. Also: Any CPU, Mixed Platforms, Win32. What drives me nuts is having to configure it correctly as well as choosing the right one out of 12 x 3 = 36 configurations as well as having to substitute database name depending on the type of database: config, main, or gateway. I am thinking that configuration should be reduced to just Debug, Release, and SQL_APPLY. Also, using 0, 1, and 2 seems so 80s ... Finally, I think my intention to build or not to build 3 types of databases for 3 types of vendors should be configured with just a tic tac toe board like: XOX OOX XXX In this case it would mean build MSFT+CONFIG, all SYBASE, and all GATEWAY. Still, the overall thing which uses a text file and a pre-processor and many configurations seems incredibly clunky. It is year 2010 now and someone out there is bound to have a very clean and/or creative tool/solution. The only pro would be that the existing collection of macros has been well tested. Have you ever had to write SQL that would work for several vendors? How did you do it?   • WiX, Conditionally installing a file based on OS

    In my WiX project I need to install different content for the same file name, based on the OS. If the OS is Windows 7 then the file needs to have content X. If the OS is Windows Vista the file needs to have content Y. I have thought through a few approaches: Define two components, one with the content for windows 7 and another with the contents for Vista. Run a custom action based on the OS that overwrites the content for Vista if the OS is Windows 7. Define two additional features (window7 config and win vista config) have the components target the same file and install the feature conditionally based on OS. Which is the best approach to take. Any tips, tricks and sample wix to get this going?

  • problem with application after moving from local to hosting server

    I have an application developed with CodeIgniter that works perfectly on my local server. After uploading it to the hosting server I've run into few issues that I can't figure out. I removed the index.php from URL by changing $config['index_page'] = "" in config.php file and adding rewriterule in .htaccess file. Everything worked fine on a local server. On hosting server the webstie wouldn't load until I reverted those changes to defaults. Now the strangest thing. I test the website and all pages load fine except of one. When I point to that page the browser responds with "Connection closed by remote server" (That's from Opera, other browser gave similar response). After closing the browser when I try to load the website again, now it won't even load any page showing me CodeIgniter's styled error "404 Page Not Found" What he heck?

  • automatically rewrite URLs in ASP.NET

    I use VS2010,C# to develop an ASP.NET web site, my customers want me to have their pages like this: mysite.com/customer (in fact they call mysite/customer/default.aspx) so I've manually created several folders for each customer, and inserted a default.aspx file in the folder so that users can view customer page by typing mysite.com/customer is there a better way for performing this scenario? I don't want to have mysite.com/customer1.aspx, I want to have mysite.com/customer1, is there anyway that I can remove folders (and their containing default.aspx files) and generate something automatic using my customers database? should I use URL rewriting? is there anyway that I can create page mysite.com/customer1.aspx, and users can view it by typing mysite.com/customer1? I think it is possible to rewrite URLs in web.config, but I don't want to do it manually in web.config as my pages would increase in a daily basis thanks

It's not one I've written myself but the spec for the delimited text file is set up properly and the file imports properly using the wizard.     I'm writing a System::Wrapper module to abstract away from CORE::system and the qx operator. I have a serial method that attempts to connect command1's output to command2's input. I've made some progress using named pipes, but POSIX::mkfifo is not cross-platform. My specific questions: Is there an alternative to POSIX::mkfifo that is cross-platform? Win32 named pipes don't work, as you can't open those as regular files, neither do sockets, for the same reasons. The above doesn't quite work; the two threads get spawned correctly, but nothing flows across the pipe. I suppose that might have something to do with pipe deadlocking or output buffering. What throws me off is that when I run those two commands in the actual shell, everything works as expected.

On the link http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/videos?q=KgfdlZuVz7I there is tag: <openSearch:totalResults>1</openSearch:totalResults> There is namespace openSearch: xmlns:openSearch='http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearchrss/1.0/' but I dont know how to deal with it in Nokogiri and Ruby.   • Using an observer within an Engine

    I've created an Engine which is basically used for all of our projects. Now what I want to do is add a before_create callback to all of the models in this Engine. After some searching I found out that an observer is the way to go. So, I've created this observer: class AuthObserver < ActiveRecord::Observer def before_create( record ) p record end end And now I need to add it to the application, but of course in my Engine there is no such file as application.rb. What I tried is adding it to an initializer located in /config/initializers/observers.rb Like so: Rails.application.config.active_record.observers = :auth_observer But this doesn't work, and it throws no errors. Anybody out here has experience using an observer inside an engine? Thanks a lot!

  • Using local configs in a Heroku deployment environment

    I'm trying to migrate my app to Heroku - I have a config file that varies with development/staging/production environments as it contains uniquely assigned keys (from Facebook, S3, etc.), so I keep it out of the repository and keep the configs local. As such I'm trying to find a solution for Heroku to have that config file since Heroku deploys from the repository. I noticed Heroku deploys from the master branch - can it deploy from another branch? Because then I could commit the Heroku configs there, and have it not overwrite the other environments' configs every time it pulls. Thanks!

    I'm fairly new to Rails and Rack, but this guy had a seemingly straightforward write-up about using Rack to implement dynamic session domain middleware. The code looks good to and I've implemented it here on my local machine, but I'm still not able to transcend top level domains on a single login.   • Can ASP.NET be configured to run as an administrator when UAC is enabled?

    I can't seem to find any information that indicates whether ASP.NET can be configured (through web.config or maybe machine.config) to run as a real administrator on a machine with UAC enabled. By this I mean, even if you set it to impersonate an Administrator account, UAC will disable that account's ability to act as an Administrator by returning a token set that hides the administrator role. For any checks such as IsInRole, the running account is effectively not an administrator at all. So ... Let's say I want to ignore all good advice and just go ahead and run a web app on Vista with administrator permissions. Is it even possible? Alternatives welcome. (Core reason for needing administrator privileges: to stop or start services that are running on that machine.)

  • Resizing of AS-based Flash app from FireFox vs. IE...

    I have put in some controls to allow users to resize my Flash app via Javascript: document.getElementById("flashApp").height*=1.25; document.getElementById("flashApp").width*=1.25; This works great in IE/Safari, but is ignored in Firefox. I know it's talking the the flash app and gets and sets the height/width vars ok, but the same code run in FireFox ignores the scaling. (It's not the DOC spec issue) Any thoughts? Bill

    I'm going to have a ton of subclasses, so want to organize them under a subfolder called stream. I added the following line to the environment.rb so that all classes in the subfolder would be loaded: Rails::Initializer.run do |config| ... config.load_paths += Dir["#{RAILS_ROOT}/app/models/*"].find_all { |f| File.stat(f).directory? } ... end I thought this would solve the issue in which by convention the model class is namespaced into an according module. However, when I try to call one of the classes called stream in the stream folder, I get the following error: NoMethodError: undefined method `new' for Stream:Module from (irb):28 from /usr/local/bin/irb:12:in `<main>' Here's the model for the parent and one child: class Stream end class EventStream < Stream end Any idea what the issue is?

  • Change cursor style in firefox input file tag

    I have been trying to change the cursor style to look like a pointer rather than an I beam thing, but it looks like FF does not respect the cursor spec in an input file field. For example, I have made this small fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/jDZtn/4/ where Id like the cursor to look like a pointer rather than an Ibeam when the user hovers over it. My end plan is to introduce opacity==0 and use a clickable button over it. I am not sure if this behaviour is a bug or not.

  • Custom librairies with Razor with the release version of MVC 3

    So I'm developing an in-house library for MVC 3 and I want to add it to my project. I added it to my web.config. I added the assembly and added it to the pages - namespaces section and... no. Doesn't work. I tried recompiling, etc... but Razor doesn't like it at all. It's not an intellisense problem... the site can't run if I use my defined namespace. The only way that I made it work was by using the following statements: @using Sample.Helpers I don't want to use it in the pages. I want to be able to deploy it to many projects and adding it to the web.config is definitely the way to go. Anyone ran into this problem?
