• CPU temperature higher under Ubuntu 12.10 than under Windows 7

  The CPU temperature under Ubuntu 12.10 is significantly higher than under Windows 7 doing similar tasks. For example, the CPU temperature under Windows when watching flash videos is around 50-60 degrees, under Ubuntu it is between 65-75. In idle mode in Ubuntu it is usually around 50. I use an i3 core and an integrated graphics. Is there a way to lower the temperature? And I don't mean via Jupiter as this doesn't work for watching videos..

• Firefox (on windows) constantly consuming 10% CPU - is there an add-in to find the rogue tab?

  I often have many Firefox windows open, each with many tabs. Now and then one of the tabs will be running a web page that for some reason consumes lots of resources. Right now, I have a tab somewhere that is constantly consuming 10% of the CPU...which would be fine as my computer can easily handle that (see specs below...all other apps are responsive), but it seems to slow Firefox down....everything, everywhere is extremely laggy in Firefox, I can see pauses while I type this. Is there: - a way I can isolate separate instances (or even tabs) in FF into a separate process, so one rogue tab doesn't bog down FF across the entire system? - maybe an add-in that can either identify tabs consuming lots of CPU, or maybe a way to "shut down" activity on tabs you haven't used in a while? • Using PCIe and onboard together

  I'm currently using my PCI Express card to run 2 monitors and my onboard to run another. It works fine despite people saying it won't. I use a gadget to monitor my PCI card but would also like to monitor my onboard GPU as well. I play a game called Eve Online and when I'm running my accts I can only get 20 fps. Before, when I was using just my PCI card, I was getting 60+. To solve this, I set the display options to interval immediate, it was set to one before. My computer handles it no problem at all, but I was always told this was immpossible. I was hoping someone could explain how and why this is working. Thanks! • Virtualbox and getting the Locked VT-x Error when trying to use more than 1 processor on the session

  I have installed the latest version of virtualbox onto my Hewlett Pakard (h8-1170uk) I have a intel i7 2600 cpu and 8 gb of ram I can get virtual box to create several sessions of different operating systems at the same time, but whenever i try to get 1 session to open up using more than 1 processor option select ( i wanted one of my session access to 2 processors ) i keep getting this error message VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have search many times and cannot find a option to correct this. I have check my BIOS and there are no options about VT-x or Virtualisation or anything. Am i doing something wrong ? Why does Virtualbox run fine when just using the 1 processor option ?

  I understand this is a may be a very premature question given that the current build is for testing Ubuntu Core, but I have just bought a Nexus7 to join in with this Ubuntu on mobile adventure and can't help wanting to start writing some apps! I haven't really dabbled with either GTK or QT for touch apps yet and, having seen that Ubuntu TV is using Nux, I wondered what people on AskUbuntu-land would recommend. • INtel SSD RAID Trim

  I just found this article, that says that Intel now supports Trim for SSD RAIDs. It links to this download page. I'm pretty excited about that, but I'm a little confused. There seem to be two sets of drivers, an executable and something that's bootable. I ran the executable. Is that just to apply the drivers to my system now, and are the bootable drivers so that if I re-format, I won't have to re-run everything? Do I need to do both? And is there a way to check if it worked? I'm running an i7 in Windows 7 (ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard), if that's significant.

• ProStar gaming laptop, which had Ubuntu 10.10, won't boot past Grub. Thoughts?

  At work we have some high-end gaming laptops we use for their dual GPUs. The machines have second generation i7 CPUs, and came with Windows 7. On most of them I installed Ubuntu 10.10, and all was fine. There were two laptops that I wanted to repurpose and wanted to reinstall the OS. It boots the CD (burned Ubuntu installation CD, I've tried 10.10, 11.10, and 12.04, as well as CentOS 6), and when Grub tried to boot the kernel, I just get a cursor blinking in the upper left corner of the screen. I tried the disabling of ACPI and the other items in the advanced menu, but nothing works. I could still boot to the current Linux installation though. I was able to install Windows 7 again, and use WUBI, but I think that works because it uses the Windows bootloader and not Grub. How could it have worked before and not now? I have confirmed that the CD is fine, as are the hard drive and CD drive. I also had the same problem with Debian, and had to boot through Windows 7 to install it.

  I just bought this Ultrabook "Asus Taichi 21 DH71". This has Intel 3rd generation i7 processor and 4gb ram with 256 gb SSD. The main feature is that it is a hybrid machine. Naming it has dual screens. When the lid is closed it can be used as a tablet and when lid open it can be used as a notebook. This machine can also be used with the two screens on at the same time. I used ubuntu many years ago and loved it. But I never tried any linux later. My questions are Does the new version of Ubuntu support the Multitouch interface? Will it work specifically on this machine? Will Ubuntu support gestures on multi touchpad? Update 2/22/2013 I did try the latest 64bit Ubuntu(12.10) from live usb and noticed that it couldn't detect the tablet screen. Everything else worked seamlessly. Do you guys think the tablet screen would be detected if I make a complete installation on to the notebook? Please help guys..

  My mom's Laptop is running really slow with 12.04 and 13.10 right after installation. ubuntu claims it should run nice and smoothly for the hardware thats on it. Lenovo ThinkPad R61e: CPU - Pentium Dual Core t2370 1.73ghz x 2 Ram - 1GB DDR2 667mhz GPU - intel 965gm x86/mmx/sse2 HDD - 80gb sata i tried hardware tests and they fail right that the very beginning of the testing. it does the same for bootable hardware tests (on a cd or usb) Is there any bloatware that can be removed that common windows users would never use?

Everything works fine even the brightness, but when I try the multi touch multi finger(touchpad which enables two or more finger) the pointer jump and go there and go here and so It's very annoying because when I'm trying to write this question I cannot let the pointer be cool! when I accidentally the touchpad it is very annoying.   I had everything working fine, I use a number of openGL graphics software, example pymol, mgltools, vmd, ballview, rasmol etc. All of these give the error: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". and fail to initialize. I have an i7 asus k53s with nvidia gforce I need these to do my work. I tried the umblebee fix, and just removing all nvidia drivers, or rolling back. I do not know why these were working then stopped, but did notice a new nvidia console in the mu which I assume was from enabling the automatic nvidia feeds, etc? I also played with the xorg, however have no clue what settings are valid. In addition, the display is 50% of the time not recognized now? It just gives a geeic 640x480 and I have to login and out 10 times to get it to return to a normal setting. When I try and set it manual, there is no other setting allowed from the settings menus, and the terminal changes just get re set every time I log out?

• No display but video card fans spins

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • How do you passthrough native SATA drives to a guest on ESXi?

  I have ESXi 4.0 running on an Intel DX58S0 Mothboardboard with an Intel Core i7 930 processor. VT-d is also enabled. I have three drives in the system, drive 0 is used for ESXi. Drive 1 and 2 contain data from an older machine and show up under the "Storage Adapters" section in configuration. I would like to allow a guest machine to access the data on these drives (as nativly as possible). I have enabled passthrough of the motherboard's built in SATA controller (Intel/Marvell 88SE6121 ). This controller shows up in my guest OS, but the guest shows no drives aside from the normal virtual drive. I have tried a Linux guest and Windows7. I have also configured the host machine to try IDE/RAID/ACHI modes for the SATA controller. Any ideas how I can configure one of my guests to get at the raw data on these drives?

• Can certain system-hungry modules be disabled in Ubuntu?

  Hi, Let me add some context: I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit (Desktop) on a relatively powerful stationary PC (Intel Core i7 920, 12GB ram). My purpose is highspeed imaging with a pointgrey Grashopper machine-vision camera (for research, PhD project). This camera is capable of 200 fps at full VGA (640x480) resolution. The camera is connected using Firewire (1394b) and the drivers and software from Pointgrey works great. I have developed a console C++ application that can grap a certain number of frames to preallocated memory and after this also save the grapped frames to harddrive. Currently it works fine but sometimes I am observing a few framedrops (1-3). When this happens I reset the experiment and repeat the recording and usually i am lucky the second time with no framedrops (the camera-driver has a internal framecounter that I am using). Question: I usually go to tty1 and use "sudo service gdm stop" to disable the graphical frontend. It seems to release some memory though that is not my main concern. My concern is CPU resources. Are there other system hungry modules that can be disabled temporarily such that the CPU gets less busy on Ubuntu 9.10? At some point in the future I will update to 10.10. Should I perhaps option for the server edition instead? Thanks.
