  Hi, I am trying to install Subclipse plugins for eclipse IDE. I have installed it but on restart of the IDE, it throws up the following error: Failed to load JavaHL Library. • How do I fix Internet Explorer / Firefox differences in Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise?

  Our company uses Oracle's JD Edwards Enterprise to do accounting work. We have an application consultant working for us to just deal JD Edwards but he is of non-technical background so only helps in application-specific support. All of our users should use IE 7 for JDE. About 15-20% of those users have problems which cause them to not be able to use IE 7. So those problematic users use firefox. For the most part firefox works fine but there are a few issues. Some menus / options within JDE that are present in IE 7 are not present in firefox. If I could get all of our users working under IE 7, all the firefox issues would be mute points. I have cross referenced Internet Options settings from a working IE 7 user and a non-working IE 7 user. All settings seem to be mirrored. I'm not sure how to go about continuing to troubleshoot this issue. So not only answers but just suggestive ideas for attack would be appreciated. Thanks

• JVM terminates when launching eclipse with J2SE 6.0 on mac os x (need J2SE 6.0 for Oracle enterprise

  I know my issue has party been addressed at this link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/245803/jvm-terminates-when-launching-eclipse-mat-on-mac-os-with-j2se-60 but it was a year+ ago.. plus the link that's provided in there http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/ does not seem to be alive (i mean the download section on that link no longer provide the 32-bit port of j2se 6.0 for mac osx 10.5) I am trying to run eclipse 3.5 on mac OSX 10.5. It works fine with J2SE 5.0. But when I installed the Oracle enterprise pack for eclipse - it requires to start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM otherwise it will get disabled. Here's the exact message I get from it - "You are running Eclipse on Java VM version: 1.5.0_22 Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse requires Java version 6 or higher. Click next to configure a compatible Java VM." It asks me to point to J2SE 6.0 JVM, when I do that (i.e point it to "/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home") , it asks to restart eclipse , when I do that, eclipse just bombs .. with JVM terminated error .. SO I need to start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM but eclipse needs carbon which is only available in 32 bits and hence I cann't start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM which is only available in 64bit mode from mac. And the site providing 32 bit port of J2SE 6.0 JVM does not seem to be active anymore.. Can someone help me on this issue, Thanks in advance,

• How do I use a shared library (in this case JsonCpp) in my C++ program on Linux?

  I'm a new-ish C++ programmer, and I'm doing my first program on my own using C++. I decided I would like to use JSON to store some of the data I'm going to be using, and I've found a library to handle JSON, JsonCpp. I've installed the library using my Linux system's package manager, and in my C++ code, I've used in my source code file #include <json> and compiled it using g++ and it's -ljson and -L/usr/lib options (libjson.so is located in /usr/lib). However, the first usage of Json::Value, an object provided by the library, gives a compilation error of "Json has not declared". I'm sure my mistake is something simple, so could someone explain what I'm doing wrong? None of the books I had mention how to use shared libraries, so I've had to google to find this much.

Real framework needs modification of system setting. And still not work smoothly on every parts. Problem is static library need header files, and it's impossible to reference header files on project at another location on different project without some script. And script breaks IDE's file management abstraction. How can I use static library project like a convenient module manner? (just dragging project into another project to complete embedding)

• Is there a good reflection library available for Scala?

  I'm working on a library that needs reflection, and needs Scala-specific information as opposed to what is available via the standard Java reflection API. Right now I'm using the undocumented code in scalap (the Scala equivalent to javap) and trying to associate the data it provides with Java reflection objects so that I can call methods and such (scalap just parses class files). I found this but there's nothing there... https://github.com/dubochet/scala-reflection ...and I've searched the Scala SVN repo for traces of it and failed to find it there, either (but it could be I just missed it). Does anyone know of a Scala reflection library that provides information similar to what scalap provides but also allows you to call methods, access fields, etc like the Java reflection library?

• How to obtain specific Excel object library without the corresponding Office version installed.

  I am developing a Excel automation app that read and write to Excel spreadsheet. I have Office 2007 installed on my machine. I therefore can reference the Excel 12.0 Object Library and the Excel 5.0 Object Library. I don't want to use Excel 5.0 because it's really quite old and poorly documented. Therefore I'm referencing Excel 12.0. However the target machine have Office 2003 installed and therefore only have Excel 11.0. So when I compile my program it crashes on the target machine since the referenced library are different. I was wondering is there a way I could obtain the Excel 11.0 without installing Office 03? I tried to find answers from msdn and microsoft support page but couldn't find anything? This is quite strange since it could also happen in the future where developers has newer editions of Office than clients?

  I've got raw data streams from image files, like: vector<char> rawData(fileSize); ifstream inFile("image.jpg"); inFile.read(&rawData[0]); I want to parse the headers of different image formats for height and width. Is there a portable library that can can read ints, longs, shorts, etc. from the buffer/stream, converting for endianess as specified? I'd like to be able to do something like: short x = rawData.readLeShort(offset); or long y = rawData.readBeLong(offset) An even better option would be a lightweight & portable image metadata library (without the extra weight of an image manipulation library) that can work on raw image data. I've found that Exif libraries out there don't support png and gif.

• Android: Best way/library to write an app that simply gets/sets your Facebook status, sends Facebook

  I have the Android Facebook-Connect library running in my emulator and I'm able to set my status with the Facebook API I have setup. However, I don't know where to go from there? Am I supposed to use the session key that this library allows me to get and make some Facebook API calls? I haven't found any code examples to even see what the proper syntax is. Am I better off using another library? I tried fbrocket with limited luck(I get a "server error 104 - Incorrect signature"). Thanks for any help.

  Hi, I need to make calls from webpage to external library written in C++ and display the result. Platform is Linux, Apache, PHP. My current idea is to use PHP service which will call my library/program. I found that there are two possible ways to do this: 1) use PHP 'exec' function 2) write PHP extension I am curious what works more effective? Faster? Less load the server? I will probably need to do 4 calls per second, so I want to be as optimal as possible. P.S.   What is the easiest and safest way to call a function from a shared library / dll? I am mostly interested in doing this on linux, but it would be better if there were a platform-independent way. • IRM and Consumerization

  As the season of rampant consumerism draws to its official close on 12th Night, it seems a fitting time to discuss consumerization - whereby technologies from the consumer market, such as the Android and iPad, are adopted by business organizations. I expect many of you will have received a shiny new mobile gadget for Christmas - and will be expecting to use it for work as well as leisure in 2011. In my case, I'm just getting to grips with my first Android phone. This trend developed so much during 2010 that a number of my customers have officially changed their stance on consumer devices - accepting consumerization as something to embrace rather than resist. Clearly, consumerization has significant implications for information control, as corporate data is distributed to consumer devices whether the organization is aware of it or not. I daresay that some DLP solutions can limit distribution to some extent, but this creates a conflict between accepting consumerization and frustrating it. So what does Oracle IRM have to offer the consumerized enterprise? First and foremost, consumerization does not automatically represent great additional risk - if an enterprise seals its sensitive information. Sealed files are encrypted, and that fundamental protection is not affected by copying files to consumer devices. A device might be lost or stolen, and the user might not think to report the loss of a personally owned device, but the data and the enterprise that owns it are protected. Indeed, the consumerization trend is another strong reason for enterprises to deploy IRM - to protect against this expansion of channels by which data might be accidentally exposed. It also enables encryption requirements to be met even though the enterprise does not own the device and cannot enforce device encryption. Moving on to the usage of sealed content on such devices, some of our customers are using virtual desktop solutions such that, in truth, the sealed content is being opened and used on a PC in the normal way, and the user is simply using their device for display purposes. This has several advantages: The sensitive documents are not actually on the devices, so device loss and theft are even less of a worry The enterprise has another layer of control over how and where content is used, as access to the virtual solution involves another layer of authentication and authorization - defence in depth It is a generic solution that means the enterprise does not need to actively support the ever expanding variety of consumer devices - the enterprise just manages some virtual access to traditional systems using something like Citrix or Remote Desktop services. It is a tried and tested way of accessing sealed documents. People have being using Oracle IRM in conjunction with Citrix and Remote Desktop for several years. For some scenarios, we also have the "IRM wrapper" option that provides a simple app for sealing and unsealing content on a range of operating systems. We are busy working on other ways to support the explosion of consumer devices, but this blog is not a proper forum for talking about them at this time. If you are an Oracle IRM customer, we will be pleased to discuss our plans and your requirements with you directly on request. • iPhone application build fails with "dyld: Library not loaded: /System/[...]" error? Why?

  For my own reasons and not for the app store I am referencing the Apple private framework Apple80211 in an iPhone app. I got the framework from an earlier version of the iPhone SDK. I added the "existing framework", verified that that absolute path to the framework is /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS4.0.sdk/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework and tried to build the app. But the build (to device) fails with the error dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Apple80211 Referenced from: /var/mobile/Applications/3691587D-87AF-44EA-A505-F73D17F39B3B/iWire2.app/iWire2 Reason: image not found I cannot figure out why Xcode would look for the library in a /System path (instead of using the path given in the frameworks list) or how to change that behaviour. I tried the tricks I found here and elsewhere for similar (and identical) sitiations: Delete the myusername.* files in the xcodeproj bundle Delete the build directory Clean all targets Start new project Result is always the same. How can I add this (or a) framework to an iPhone project AND get Xcode to at least look at the library located where I point to rather than a location in /System?

I got to talk about two topics that I am very passionate about: ASP.NET MVC and Ajax. Thanks everyone for coming to all my talks! • GPLv2 - Multiple AI chess engines to bypass GPL

  I have gone through a number of GPL-related questions, the most recent being this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3248823/legal-question-about-the-gpl-license-net-dlls/3249001#3249001 I'm trying to see how this would work, so bear with me. I have a simple GUI interface for a game of Chess. It essentially can send/receive commands to/from an external chess engine (ie: Tong, Fruit, etc). The application/GUI is similar in nature to XBoard ( http://www.gnu.org/software/xboard/ ), but was independently designed. After going through a number of threads on this topic, it seems that the FSF considers dynamically linking against a GPLv2 library as a derivative work, and that by doing so, the GPLv2 extends to my proprietary code, and I must release the source to my entire project. Other legal precedents indicate the opposite, and that dynamic linking doesn't cause the "viral" effect of the GPL to propagate to my proprietary code. Since there is no official consensus that can give a "hard-and-fast" answer to the dynamic linking question, would this be an acceptable alternative: I build my chess GUI so that it sends/receives the chess engine AI logic as text commands from an external interface library that I write The interface library I wrote itself is then released under the GPL The interface library is only used to communicate via a generic text pipe to external command-line chess engines The chess engine itself would be built as a command-line utility rather than as a library of any sort, and just sends strings in the Universal Chess Interface of Chess Engine Communication Protocol ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Engine_Communication_Protocol ) format. The one "gotcha" is that the interface library should not be specific to one single GPL'ed chess engine, otherwise the entire GUI would be "entirely dependent" on it. So, I just make my interface library so that it is able to connect to any command-line chess engine that uses a specific format, rather than just one unique engine. I could then include pre-built command-line-app versions of any of the chess engines I'm using. Would that sort of approach allow me to do the following: NOT release the source for my UI Release the source of the interface library I built (if necessary) Use one or more chess engines and bundle them as external command-line utilities that ship with a binary version of my UI Thank you.

• Is the Cloud ready for an Enterprise Java web application? Seeking a JEE hosting advice.

  Greetings to all the smart people around here! I'd like to ask whether it is feasible or a good idea at all to deploy a Java enterprise web application to a Cloud such as Amazon EC2. More exactly, I'm looking for infrastructure options for an application that shall handle few hundred users with long but neither CPU nor memory intensive sessions. I'm considering dedicated servers, virtual private servers (VPSs) and EC2. I've noticed that there is a project called JBoss Cloud so people are working on enabling such a deployment, on the other hand it doesn't seem to be mature yet and I'm not sure that the cloud is ready for this kind of applications, which differs from the typical cloud-based applications like Twitter. Would you recommend to deploy it to the cloud? What are the pros and cons? The application is a Java EE 5 web application whose main function is to enable users to compose their own customized Product by combining the available Parts. It uses stateless and stateful session beans and JPA for persistence of entities to a RDBMS and fetches information about Parts from the company's inventory system via a web service. Aside of external users it's used also by few internal ones, who are authenticated against the company's LDAP. The application should handle around 300-400 concurrent users building their product and should be reasonably scalable and available though these qualities are only of a medium importance at this stage. I've proposed an architecture consisting of a firewall (FW) and load balancer supporting sticky sessions and https (in the Cloud this would be replaced with EC2's Elastic Load Balancing service and FW on the app. servers, in a physical architecture the load-balancer would be a HW), then two physical clustered application servers combined with web servers (so that if one fails, a user doesn't loose his/her long built product) and finally a database server. The DB server would need a slave backup instance that can replace the master instance if it fails. This should provide reasonable availability and fault tolerance and provide good scalability as long as a single RDBMS can keep with the load, which should be OK for quite a while because most of the operations are done in the memory using a stateful bean and only occasionally stored or retrieved from the DB and the amount of data is low too. A problematic part could be the dependency on the remote inventory system webservice but with good caching of its outputs in the application it should be OK too. Unfortunately I've only vague idea of the system resources (memory size, number and speed of CPUs/cores) that such an "average Java EE application" for few hundred users needs. My rough and mostly unfounded estimate based on actual Amazon offerings is that 1.7GB and a single, 2-core "modern CPU" with speed around 2.5GHz (the High-CPU Medium Instance) should be sufficient for any of the two application servers (since we can handle higher load by provisioning more of them). Alternatively I would consider using the Large instance (64b, 7.5GB RAM, 2 cores at 1GHz) So my question is whether such a deployment to the cloud is technically and financially feasible or whether dedicated/VPS servers would be a better option and whether there are some real-world experiences with something similar. • Does heavy library and snippet codes usage make you a bad programmer?

  Overall I'm in programming for about 8 years now and it seems to me that I'm relying more and more on open source libraries and snippets (damn you GitHub!) to "get the job done". I know that in time I could write me own implementation but I like to focus on the overall design. Is this normal (non cooperate environment)? Does it make you a bad programmer if "programming" is nothing more than cluing different libraries together. Feels like it. I know about "don't reinvent the wheel" but what happens when you don't invent a single wheel anymore. What's your take on this?

  I have been working on .Net platform for 2 years and right now I am working on DevExpress controls for 6 months. All these control have client-side Events which are under some ClientScript nameSpace of particular control, Which specify ClientInstanceName, methods and properties accessible at client side. For example Button1 is ClientInstanceName and Button1.Text is a property, with methods like these: Button1.SetValue(); Button1.GetValue(); In ASP.Net Controls, buttons have the ClientClick event that fires before the Server Side Click event. I have inspected and goggled to extend client side functionality in asp.net controls. For example: create a ClientInstanceName property for controls or CheckedChanged event for CheckBox / RadioButton control. • What is an effective git process for managing our central code library?

  Quick background: we're a small web agency (3-6 developers at any one time) developing small to medium sized Symfony 1.4 sites. We've used git for a year now, but most of our developers have preferred Subversion and aren't used to a distributed model. For the past 6 months we've put a lot of development time into a central Symfony plugin that powers our custom CMS. This plugin includes a number of features, helpers, base classes etc. that we use to build custom functionality. This plugin is stored in git, but branches wildly as the plugin is used in various products and is pulled from/pushed to constantly. The repository is usually used as a submodule within a major project. The problems we're starting to see now are a large number of Merge conflicts and backwards incompatible changes brought into the repository by developers adding custom functionality in the context of their own project. I've read Vincent Driessen's excellent git branching model and successfully used it for projects in the past, but it doesn't seem to quite apply well to our particular situation; we have a number of projects concurrently using the same core plugin while developing new features for it. What we need is a strategy that provides the following: A methodology for developing major features within the code repository. A way of migrating those features into other projects. A way of versioning the core repository, and of tracking which version each major project uses. A plan for migrating bug fixes back to older versions. A cleaner history that's easier to see where changes have come from. Any suggestions or discussion would be greatly appreciated.
