    - by Widy Graycloud
I dont know what's wrong with my update manager.. It says that the softwares that I installed was broken. Maybe because I force shutdown my laptop, because Ubuntu wont shutdown, showing up desktop wallpaper but not title bar and launcher, but It won't shut down (+that's another bug). I've just update the broken softwares. the size is 60 to 70 MB.. But It doesn't work. Now I cannot update or install any software from Update Manager or Ubuntu Software Center. Can anybody tellme what's wrong? This is what appears when I use Update Manager I use Ubuntu Software Center, and this message appeared I chose repair and when it update the broken softwares using Ubuntu Software Center. It failed. And show up this message. The problem is I can't update or install any program from Ubuntu Software Center and Device Manager anymore. (I closed allprograms include ubuntu software center, and device manager in this case). Some one helpme? I tried to use apt-get install -f in terminal but it shows message like this: E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

  • LiveCD not booting/can't install Ubuntu 11.04

    - by user20318
So, i got a new laptop somedays ago and as usualy, i went formated it to install Ubuntu. Download 11.04 and burned it on my pendrive using my old laptop (running 11.04). When i tryed to boot from the LiveUSB on my new laptop, it just showed me some weird graphics and if i select any option (can't see what im selecting), it gives me a black screen and that is all. Then i tryed to boot with this LiveUSB on my old laptop, and it worked just fine ._. Burned a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 (64bits) and the problem continue. Then i tought it could be my CD Driver, since the laptop is new and all... burned a Windows 7 64 bits DVD and it worked just fine. Also, if i check the CD/Pendrive inside Windows Seven, all the files there are ok. Anyone have any idea of what can be? I found lots of questions about this, but none of them had the weird menus i'm getting ._. oohh... i also get a "prefix is not set" before the weird menu appears :S My sis specs: Intel Core i5 2400 Intel HD 3000 4gb DDR3 If anyone can help, i will be really greatfull ._.

  • PCManFM problems: shuts down unexpectedly, would not always start [closed]

    - by cipricus
In Lubuntu 12.04 beta (final release in a few days). I do not remember doing something outrageous to my PCManFM but now it has has a lot of problems: "extract here" menu action wouldn't work (this problem never disappears) the program shuts without obvious reason making the desktop empty (the program can be started in run (alt-f2) but this does not alway restore the desktop) would not start sometimes from its /usr/share/applications.desktop file (or the "Aplication Launch Bar") although it starts in run (alt-f2) (the last problem is temporarily solved if the program is closed in task manager and than restarted with alt-f2) I have reinstalled it to no avail. Any ideas?

  • When should I decline to make a requested change?

    - by reuscam
I work on the software side of a company that provides custom hardware with software running on top of it. Often times the hardware is not engineered well. In those cases, I am often asked first to troubleshoot the problem - of course the symptom is always "your software crashed" or something along those lines. Just recently we had another one of these incidents where power on a USB line is not reliable, and it causes a USB device to fail. This causes a usability problem in one of our applications. I have been asked by upper management to handle this better - continually monitor the USB device, and if it disappears, then reboot, or try to reset it. Doing either of these is not guaranteed to fix anything. Ultimately, the real fix is to correct the reliability of the device from the hardware side. I could improve performance, but not to 100%, and of course I would be using my already limited time to bloat code and add yet another device monitoring thread. So with all that said, how do I make a good decision about when to say that this needs to be a hardware fix, and only a hardware fix? Can I approach this quantitatively, and come up with some sort of definitive yes/no test? I'm sure its not that easy.

  • Why is 0 false?

    - by Morwenn
This question may sound dumb, but why does 0 evaluates to false and any other [integer] value to true is most of programming languages? String comparison Since the question seems a little bit too simple, I will explain myself a little bit more: first of all, it may seem evident to any programmer, but why wouldn't there be a programming language - there may actually be, but not any I used - where 0 evaluates to true and all the other [integer] values to false? That one remark may seem random, but I have a few examples where it may have been a good idea. First of all, let's take the example of strings three-way comparison, I will take C's strcmp as example: any programmer trying C as his first language may be tempted to write the following code: if (strcmp(str1, str2)) { // Do something... } Since strcmp returns 0 which evaluates to false when the strings are equal, what the beginning programmer tried to do fails miserably and he generally does not understand why at first. Had 0 evaluated to true instead, this function could have been used in its most simple expression - the one above - when comparing for equality, and the proper checks for -1 and 1 would have been done only when needed. We would have considered the return type as bool (in our minds I mean) most of the time. Moreover, let's introduce a new type, sign, that just takes values -1, 0 and 1. That can be pretty handy. Imagine there is a spaceship operator in C++ and we want it for std::string (well, there already is the compare function, but spaceship operator is more fun). The declaration would currently be the following one: sign operator<=>(const std::string& lhs, const std::string& rhs); Had 0 been evaluated to true, the spaceship operator wouldn't even exist, and we could have declared operator== that way: sign operator==(const std::string& lhs, const std::string& rhs); This operator== would have handled three-way comparison at once, and could still be used to perform the following check while still being able to check which string is lexicographically superior to the other when needed: if (str1 == str2) { // Do something... } Old errors handling We now have exceptions, so this part only applies to the old languages where no such thing exist (C for example). If we look at C's standard library (and POSIX one too), we can see for sure that maaaaany functions return 0 when successful and any integer otherwise. I have sadly seen some people do this kind of things: #define TRUE 0 // ... if (some_function() == TRUE) { // Here, TRUE would mean success... // Do something } If we think about how we think in programming, we often have the following reasoning pattern: Do something Did it work? Yes -> That's ok, one case to handle No -> Why? Many cases to handle If we think about it again, it would have made sense to put the only neutral value, 0, to yes (and that's how C's functions work), while all the other values can be there to solve the many cases of the no. However, in all the programming languages I know (except maybe some experimental esotheric languages), that yes evaluates to false in an if condition, while all the no cases evaluate to true. There are many situations when "it works" represents one case while "it does not work" represents many probable causes. If we think about it that way, having 0 evaluate to true and the rest to false would have made much more sense. Conclusion My conclusion is essentially my original question: why did we design languages where 0 is false and the other values are true, taking in account my few examples above and maybe some more I did not think of? Follow-up: It's nice to see there are many answers with many ideas and as many possible reasons for it to be like that. I love how passionate you seem to be about it. I originaly asked this question out of boredom, but since you seem so passionate, I decided to go a little further and ask about the rationale behind the Boolean choice for 0 and 1 on Math.SE :)

  • transaction log shipping sql server 2005 to 2008

    - by Andrew Jahn
I have a reporting setup with SSRS on our sql server 2005 database. Because sql server 2008 is not supported by the main program which populates our database we are stuck with 2005 on our prod database. Unfortunately when I run our weekly check reports the web interface constantly times out because the server cant do the conversion to PDF. I've read that sql server 2008's SSRS is ALOT better with memory management. I was wondering if I can do some kind transact log shipping subscription publication from 2005 to 2008? Am I chasing a dream here.

  • Php sessions secure log in

    - by Doodle
My question is about creating a secure log in routine. After comparing the user name and password to the stored values I set a session variable called logged to true. Then as the user surfs around the web page I just check the logged variable for true or false to determine if the user should have access. This is my first time creating something like this. Is this secure? I feel like there is something else that I should be doing to make sure that users are valid.

  • Import xml to database with high end performance and Audit log- A best Practice

    - by karthik
Hi, I have to import big xml files to Ms SQL 2005 Database by using C# with high end Performance. Even if any record fails in middle, i have to take next record for process and failed record need to log for audit. I don't want to put insert query with in for loop. Could you please suggest a best way to do this. If I can use bulkcopy methods or Data Adapter update methods- Its very nice, But if any record fails, execution of that statement breaks and rolled back totally, right? Any alternatives and Best practices with example please..? Is Multi-threading works for me to improve performance..? Give me example please. Thanks Karthikeyan

  • android call log like design

    - by Alxandr
I'm trying to create a design for a list that looks like (and mostly behaves like) the call log, like shown here: I don't need all the design, but what I'm trying to achieve is the two-columned design with the splitter in-between, and the behavior that if I click on the main item (the left part) one thing happens (in this case, you open some details about the call), and if you press the outer right part something else happens (you call the contact). I'm pretty new to android, but I've managed to do most of the designs I wanted so far, so I don't need the entire layout for this one, only the part that does the splitting and the splitter. And if possible it would be nice to know how to map the clicks appropriately, though I think I might be able to find that out by my self.

  • CSRF error when trying to log onto Django admin page with w3m on Emacs23

    - by Vernon
I normally use Firefox and have had no problems with the admin page on my Django website. But I use Emacs23 for writing my posts, and wanted to be able to use w3m in Emacs to copy the stuff across. When I try to log into my admin pages, it gives the CSRF error: CSRF verification failed. Request aborted. Help Reason given for failure: No CSRF or session cookie. ... Is there a way that I could get w3m to work with my admin page? I am not sure if the problem lies with the way the admin is set up on Django or with the Emacs or w3m settings.

  • WPF (irc) chat log control

    - by user408952
I'm trying to learn WPF and was thinking about creating a simple IRC client. The most complicated part is to create the chat log. I want it to look more or less like the one in mIRC: or irssi: The important parts are that the text should be selectable, lines should wrap and it should be able to handle quite large logs. The alternatives that I can come up with are: StackPanel inside a ScrollViewer where each line is a row ListView, since that seems more suitable for dynamic content/data binding. Create an own control that does the rendering on its own. Is there any WPF guru out there that has some ideas on which direction to take and where to start?

  • Verify windows log-in via smart card

    - by Ronen Rabinovitz
Hi I need to verify in my WPF application if the user log in to his computer via password or via smart-card. Both login options are available in my company clients but my application need to open only in the smart-card login. All the clients are windows 7 OS. I look at some sites: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff404285(v=ws.10).aspx http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/240655/Using-a-Smart-Card-Certificate-with-NET-Security-i and I'm thinking I need to get the enhanced key usage (EKU) attribute field. If the EKU is empty = then the user was loged via password and not via smartcard. I only need this simple check, I do not care for creating/validations on certificates atc.

  • C++ simple logging class with UTF-8 output [code example]

    - by Andrew
    Hello everyone, I was working on one of my academic projects and for the first time I needed pure C++ without GUI. After googling for a while, I did not find any simple and easy to use implementation for logging and created my own. This is a simple implementation with iostreams that logs messages to screen and to the file simultaneously. I was thinking of using templates but then I realized that I do not expect any changes and removed that. It is modified std::wostream with two added modifiers: 1. TimeStamp - prints time-stamp 2. LogMode(LogModes) - switches output: file only, screen only, file+screen. *Boost::utf8_codecvt_facet* is used for UTF-8 output. // ############################################################################ // # Name: MyLog.h # // # Purpose: Logging Class Header # // # Author: Andrew Drach # // # Modified by: <somebody> # // # Created: 03/21/10 # // # SVN-ID: $Id$ # // # Copyright: (c) 2010 Andrew Drach # // # Licence: <license> # // ############################################################################ #ifndef INCLUDED_MYLOG_H #define INCLUDED_MYLOG_H // headers -------------------------------------------------------------------- #include <string> #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <exception> #include <boost/program_options/detail/utf8_codecvt_facet.hpp> using namespace std; // definitions ---------------------------------------------------------------- // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- // DblBuf class // Splits up output stream into two // Inspired by http://wordaligned.org/articles/cpp-streambufs // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- class DblBuf : public wstreambuf { private: // private member declarations DblBuf(); wstreambuf *bf1; wstreambuf *bf2; virtual int_type overflow(int_type ch) { int_type eof = traits_type::eof(); int_type not_eof = !eof; if ( traits_type::eq_int_type(ch,eof) ) return not_eof; else { char_type ch1 = traits_type::to_char_type(ch); int_type r1( bf1on ? bf1->sputc(ch1) : not_eof ); int_type r2( bf2on ? bf2->sputc(ch1) : not_eof ); return (traits_type::eq_int_type(r1,eof) || traits_type::eq_int_type(r2,eof) ) ? eof : ch; } } virtual int sync() { int r1( bf1on ? bf1->pubsync() : NULL ); int r2( bf2on ? bf2->pubsync() : NULL ); return (r1 == 0 && r2 == 0) ? 0 : -1; } public: // public member declarations explicit DblBuf(wstreambuf *bf1, wstreambuf *bf2) : bf1(bf1), bf2(bf2) { if (bf1) bf1on = true; else bf1on = false; if (bf2) bf2on = true; else bf2on = false; } bool bf1on; bool bf2on; }; // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- // logstream class // Wrapper for a standard wostream with access to modified buffer // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- class logstream : public wostream { private: // private member declarations logstream(); public: // public member declarations DblBuf *buf; explicit logstream(wstreambuf *StrBuf, bool isStd = false) : wostream(StrBuf, isStd), buf((DblBuf*)StrBuf) {} }; // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- // Logging mode Class // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- enum LogModes{LogToFile=1, LogToScreen, LogToBoth}; class LogMode { private: // private member declarations LogMode(); short mode; public: // public member declarations LogMode(short mode1) : mode(mode1) {} logstream& operator()(logstream &stream1) { switch(mode) { case LogToFile: stream1.buf->bf1on = true; stream1.buf->bf2on = false; break; case LogToScreen: stream1.buf->bf1on = false; stream1.buf->bf2on = true; break; case LogToBoth: stream1.buf->bf1on = true; stream1.buf->bf2on = true; } return stream1; } }; logstream& operator<<(logstream &out, LogMode mode) { return mode(out); } wostream& TimeStamp1(wostream &out1) { time_t time1; struct tm timeinfo; wchar_t timestr[512]; // Get current time and convert it to a string time(&time1); localtime_s (&timeinfo, &time1); wcsftime(timestr, 512,L"[%Y-%b-%d %H:%M:%S %p] ",&timeinfo); return out1 << timestr; } // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- // MyLog class // Logs events to both file and screen // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- class MyLog { private: // private member declarations MyLog(); auto_ptr<DblBuf> buf; string mErrorMsg1; string mErrorMsg2; string mErrorMsg3; string mErrorMsg4; public: // public member declarations explicit MyLog(string FileName1, wostream *ScrLog1, locale utf8locale1); ~MyLog(); void NewEvent(wstring str1, bool TimeStamp = true); string FileName; wostream *ScrLog; wofstream File; auto_ptr<logstream> Log; locale utf8locale; }; // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- // MyLog constructor // ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MyLog::MyLog(string FileName1, wostream *ScrLog1, locale utf8locale1) : // ctors mErrorMsg1("Failed to open file for application logging!   • Any reason not to always log stack traces?

    - by Chris Knight
Encountered a frustrating problem in our application today which came down to an ArrayIndexOutOfBounds exception being thrown. The exception's type was just about all that was logged which is fairly useless (but, oh dear legacy app, we still love you, mostly). I've redeployed the application with a change which logs the stack trace on exception handling (and immediately found the root cause of the problem) and wondered why no one else did this before. Do you generally log the stack trace and is there any reason you wouldn't do this? Bonus points if you can explain (why, not how) the rationale behind having to jump hoops in java to get a string representation of a stack trace!

  • Should I log my website's 404 errors?

    - by Ivan Zlatanov
I have an ASP.NET website, but this question isn't really about technology, it is rather about practice. Should we log our 404 errors? My reasoning: This is a potential vulnerable point because a simple unfriendly user may fill up your hard drive in no time just by requesting wrong URLs! Some browsers often request resources up front - like for example favicon.ico, even if its not there. This is really annoying. But really I would like to know about a broken link if there exists one in my websites. Should I depend on the URL referrer? The problem with the URL referrer is that I cannot distinguish my internal redirect which may be broken with an unfriendly one from outside. What does the practice suggest?

  • File observer problem

    - by Nemat
    Hi, I want to listen to the changes occured in file system.I am using FileObserver.Here is my code: Code: class MyDirObserver extends FileObserver { String superPath; public MyDirObserver(String path) { super(path, ALL_EVENTS); this.superPath=path; } public void onEvent(int event, String path) { Log.e("onEvent of Directory", "=== onEvent ==="); try{ _Dump("dir", event, path,superPath); } catch(NullPointerException ex) { Log.e("ERROR","I am getting error"); } } } private void _Dump(final String tag, int event, String path,String superPath) { Log.d(tag, "=== dump begin ==="); Log.d(tag, "path=" + path); Log.d(tag,"super path="+superPath); Log.d(tag, "event list:"); if ((event & FileObserver.OPEN) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " OPEN"); } if ((event & FileObserver.CLOSE_NOWRITE) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " CLOSE_NOWRITE"); } if ((event & FileObserver.CLOSE_WRITE) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " CLOSE_WRITE"); Log.i("NEWFILEOBSERVER","File is Modified"); if(path!=null) { Log.d("---------FilePath",superPath+path); } } if ((event & FileObserver.CREATE) != 0) { isCreate=true; Log.i("NEWFILEOBSERVER","File is Created "); if(path!=null) { Log.d("---------FilePath",superPath+path); } Log.d(tag, " CREATE"); } if ((event & FileObserver.DELETE) != 0) { Log.i("NEWFILEOBSERVER","File is deleted"); if(path!=null) { Log.d("---------FilePath",superPath+path); } // startMyActivity("A new file is deleted thats="+superPath); Log.d(tag, " DELETE"); } if ((event & FileObserver.DELETE_SELF) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " DELETE_SELF"); } if ((event & FileObserver.ACCESS) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " ACCESS"); } if ((event & FileObserver.MODIFY) != 0) { if(!isModified) isModified=true; if(isModified && isOpen) isAgainModified=true; Log.d(tag, " MODIFY"); } if ((event & FileObserver.MOVED_FROM) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " MOVED_FROM"); if(path!=null) { Log.d("---------FilePath",superPath+path); } } if ((event & FileObserver.MOVED_TO) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " MOVED_TO"); if(path!=null) { Log.d("---------FilePath",superPath+path); } } if ((event & FileObserver.MOVE_SELF) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " MOVE_SELF"); } if ((event & FileObserver.ATTRIB) != 0) { Log.d(tag, " ATTRIB"); } Log.d(tag, "=== dump end ==="); } it stops after some time.I dont get the exact time but doesnt work always though I call startWatching() in service in a loop which runs for all the folders of sdcard and calls startWatching() for each of them. It shows unpredictable behaviour and stops listening for some folders and runs perfectly for the others. I hope you guys help me.I tried many ways but it doesnt work perfectly.Am I doing something wrong??? or there we have some other way to do this....... Please help me........I have to get this done withing few days...... Any help is appreciated!!!! Thanks in Advance Nemat

  • How to sanitize log messages in Log4j to save them in database

    - by Rafael
    Hello, I'm trying to save log messages to a central database. In order to do this, I configured the following Appender in log4j's xml configuration: <appender name="DB" class="org.apache.log4j.jdbc.JDBCAppender"> <param name="URL" value="jdbc:postgresql://localhost/logging_test" /> <param name="user" value="test_user" /> <param name="password" value="test_password" /> <param name="sql" value="INSERT INTO log_messages ( log_level, message, log_date ) VALUES ( '%p', '%m', '%d{yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss}' )" /> </appender> This works fine, except some of the messages contain ', and then the appender fails. Is there an easy way to do this?

  • Log with timestamps that have millisecond accuracy & resolution in Windows C++

    - by Psychic
I'm aware that for timing accuracy, functions like timeGetTime, timeBeginPeriod, QueryPerformanceCounter etc are great, giving both good resolution & accuracy, but only based on time-since-boot, with no direct link to clock time. However, I don't want to time events as such. I want to be able to produce an exact timestamp (local time) so that I can display it in a log file, eg 31-12-2010 12:38:35.345, for each entry made. (I need the millisecond accuracy) The standard Windows time functions, like GetLocalTime, whilst they give millisecond values, don't have millisecond resolution, depending on the OS running. I'm using XP, so I can't expect much better than about a 15ms resolution. What I need is a way to get the best of both worlds, without creating a large overhead to get the required output. Overly large methods/calculations would mean that the logger would start to eat up too much time during its operation. What would be the best/simplest way to do this?
