• Ubuntu 12.10 - VirtualBox not sharing internet with guest system

  I went from ArchLinux to Ubuntu on my dev box. I use VirtualBox to test web sites on Windows and IE. I have my Windows 7 VirtualBox image running on Ubuntu's VirtualBox. Back with ArchLinux, internet worked "out of the box" on the Windows boxes. I left the default options on the box's Network Options (NAT). The Windows machine shows as "connected to ethernet" but reports: The dns server isn't responding So I can't access Internet from there. I tried searching for Ubuntu's official docs but they seem pretty outdated. I tried using my old boxes from Arch (which boot normally but have no internet) and creating a new box from Ubuntu itself, but still get the same results. Update: I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.18 from Ubuntu's repository (apt-get install virtualbox).

  I've always coded in C# MVC3 when developing web applications. But now i wanted to learn a bit more about developing web sites with just ASP.NET. But now i'm wondering what a good setup for my code would be. For me, an MVC like pattern seems to be a good way to go. But obviously ASP.NET doesn't have any router and controller classes. So i guess people have a different way of setting up their code when they do ASP.NET. So i'm looking for more information on how to get started with this. So not really the basics of ASP.NET, but something that focuses on a good code setup. Any good tutorials/information about this/?

• Which CMS for photo-blog website?

  I need to add photo-blog to a site that I'm recently working on. It is very simple site so the blog doesn't have to be very sophisticated. What I need is: a CMS that allows me to create simple blog-like news with one (or more) images at the beginning and some description/comment below. Preferably, I would like to create something that works like sites like these two: http://www.photoblog.com/dreamie or http://www.photoblog.pl/mending/ it must be customizable. I want to integrate it's look as much as possible with current page: http://saviorforest.tk preferably, it should provide some mechanizm for uploading and storing images at the server. I thought about wordpress, but it seems to be a little bit too complicated for such simple task. Do you know any simple and easy in use CMS that would work here?

  I'm setting up a list of ping services for a portal. It has a blog, forum, articles, restaurants, hotels and many other information, so it is far beyond a blog. I have a list of standard ping services for WP blogs - but I do not know if this should be literally only for blogs. My questions are: Is it recommended to ping blog services from a portal, such as http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2? Are there any penalties for sites that are not recognized as blogs? Is there some list of ping services for regular websites and not only blogs? Thanks!

  Following the recent Google announcements about improved ranking for sites running on https we have a number of clients asking about this. Is it safe to just 301 redirect all pages to their SSL equivalent, for example in a common PHP include file: if($_SERVER['HTTPS']!="on"){ $redirect= "https://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; header("Location:$redirect",true,301); exit(); } Obviously I'm aware this is also possible within a .htaccess file but that cannot be modified in our case. Obviously all internal links would be switched to https:// links but obviously we need to sort out incoming links from Google and elsewhere. Is this a sound approach? Are there any other gotchas to be aware of?

  I have a school project to build an AI for a 2D racing game in which it will compete with several other AIs (no collision). We are given a black and white bitmap image of the racing track, we are allowed to choose basic stats for our car (handling, acceleration, max speed and brakes) after we receive the map. The AI connects to the game's server and gives to it several times a second numbers for the current acceleration and steering. The language I chose is C++, by the way. The questions are: What is the best strategy or algorithm (since I want to try and win)? I currently have in mind some ideas found on the net and one or two of my own, but I would like before I start to code that my perspective is one of the best.   Recently, I read that Facebook ads are moving towards retargeting and got interested deeper into subject. Essentially, retargeting is technique advertisers use that tracks purchase intent by putting cookies into your browser and when you visit another website within ad network you will see ad for item you "wanted to buy". In order this to for, both publisher and advertiser need to work together. Publisher needs add couple of lines of javascript and publisher need to be able to read this info across sites. In most cases, javascript inserts iframe from adnetwork domain. Iframe script sets cookies for both host domain and remote adnetwork domain. However, Same Origin policy do not let iframes read/set content from parent domain. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone explain how this technique actually works?

  I have asked a related question in different sites such as here in German and a related thread here, a different case in the latter though. I almost solved the question here, basically: "/etc/default/keyboard" -modification and one-line "$ setxkbmap -option grp:caps_toggle -variant dvorak-intl,nodeadkeys, us,de,no &" -- but the layout-settings get reseted after reboot. I use Debian but I believe the same settings apply to Ubuntu hence asking here. As far as I understand, this is just the process of obtaining a new VPS with WHM/CPanel and then migrating the existing accounts over to the new VPS, testing the sites out, then pointing the DNS to the new nameserver records. That sounds pretty straightforward. What I am having trouble understanding is how to set up the new nameservers on the new VPS. How do I obtain/establish the new nameserver records for the new, blank VPS?

  I am doing research about backlinks/PR/SEO/Search Result position and all I read about is that PageRank is not important, that it worth before but now it's not important at all. Only thing I found useful about it that is "change Search Result position", but ONLY if there are two sites with same keywords and same text content value, then Search Engine will check which site has higher PR and place that site above lowest one. Google counts PR importance as 20% for displaying search rankings, and Yahoo! is like 3%... Correct me if I am wrong... Is there any other good thing from it?

• Referencing external javascript vs. hosting my own copy

  Say I have a web app that uses jQuery. Is it better practice to host the necessary javascript files on my own servers along with my website files, or to reference them on jQuery's CDN (example: http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.7.1.min.js)? I can see pros for both sides: If it's on my servers, that's one less external dependency; if jQuery went down or changed their hosting structure or something like that, then my app breaks. But I feel like that won't happen often; there must be lots of small-time sites doing this, and the jQuery team will want to avoid breaking them. If it's on my servers, that's one less external reference that someone could call a security issue If it's referenced externally, then I don't have to worry about the bandwidth to serve the files (though I know it's not that much). If it's referenced externally and I'm deploying this web site to lots of servers that need to have their own copies of all the files, then it's one less file I have to remember to copy/update.

  I've had the same password for some sites for years with no regrets. Meanwhile, at work, I find myself being forced to change passwords every two to three months. My thinking is that if a password gets compromised, requiring that I change it several weeks out isn't going to protect me or the network very much. Moreover, I find that by being required to change passwords frequently, I degenerate into a predictable password pattern (e.g., BearsFan111, BearsFan222, ...) which results in easier to remember and easier to guess passwords. Is there a sound argument for requiring that passwords be changed periodically?

Here's the basics: We've released a press release through PRMac that included a video review. Submitted and followed up on all the big iOS review sites. None of them replied back with interest. A lot of them just told me that their editors are volunteers who will review games that are "interesting to their readers" and that they would put my app "into consideration" The only site that reviewed our app and promoted virally was iPhoneAppReview.com which we paid. We promoted on the top iOS forums We are now doing in-app advertising through inMobi and are integrating the SDK code into our app to start doing Tapjoy We posted up our gameplay videos on YouTube Any marketing strategies that anyone can suggest or recommend that we haven't used yet? • How can I determine the trending pages on my site?

I'm going to create a data feed with this info which will be input to another app. I have Apache logs, and complete control of the machine to install what I want. • Legality of copying information from a Wikia? [closed]

  I'm making a website that will act as a compendium for a video game. I noticed that a page from Wikia has a ton of useful content such as background stories and trivia for many of the "entities" in the game. According to their site: The text on Wikia sites is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 3.0 (Unported) (CC-BY-SA). I'm not a lawyer; so what is the legality of copying and pasting the information written there collaboratively by the hivemind, into my website? If needed I would not be opposed to pasting the content and providing a source link at the end of each paragraph. Can I paste the content into my site? Thanks for the help!

• Broken Links in different browsers

  Hi I'm having problems with our website, http://www.accessiblehomehealthcare.com, which is a wordpress 2.7 (version). All of a sudden our RSS links broke on the right side, which has happened before and I fixed it within 5 mins. Now, when I fix it, it doesn't look right in different version of I.E. or Firefox, I have I.E. 8 and Firefox 3.6.15 and it looks good for the most part, but there are a few parts where the links are broken. One browser the links would look ok but go to another page and the links or logos would be broken. Certain parts of the website should be static(identical) to the other pages of the site, but if a link is broken on one page, its perfect on another page. I was wondering was there a secret code for wordpress to keep the sites compatible with all browser versions or is there a bigger issue???? Any help or suggestions will help???

• Confuse with OpenGL, SFML, and its library

  I am a beginning to enter the world of game development. Lately, I researched that "OPENGL" is one of the tools to use in graphics, then I found out about "SFML" (I think that its a library or something that uses opengl). I am so confuse because all books/ sites said using "GLUT", but many people/fellow developers said that I must use a more updated one like "SFML" but sfml has few/none tutorials. What I am trying to say is "how to create own library or something like your own glut or sfml", and why does opengl has no source code? And how can I use the EXACT(not glut/sfml) opengl in my c++ program? I am so confuse....
