• Transition to C++0x from C++98

  As someone who hasn't followed the C++0x - now C++1x - story and developments closely, I am considering that it is nearing the time when I need to come up to speed with the 'released' version. I also am not really interested in looking over the standard immediately. Therefore: What resources are there that give the "effective changelog" between language versions? What books/articles are there that probe into the use of the new features? (marked as community wiki, if there are other good questions that relate to the transition, put them up)

  This seems like a lot of work; to check for null each time an object is used. I have been advised that it is a good idea to check for null pointers so you don't have to spend time looking for where segmentation faults occur. Just wondering what the community here thinks?

  I want to create a Rails (2.1 and 2.2) model with ActiveRecord validations, but without a database table. What is the most widely used approach? I've found some plugins that claim to offer this functionality, but many of them don't appear to be widely used or maintained. What does the community recommend I do?
