• Forward all traffic through an ssh tunnel

  I hope someone can follow this and I'll explain as best I can. I'm trying to forward all traffic from port 6999 on x.x.x.224, through an ssh tunnel, and onto port 7000 on x.x.x.218. Here is some ASCII art: |browser|-----|Squid on x.x.x.224|------|ssh tunnel|------<satellite link>-----|Squid on x.x.x.218|-----|www| 3128 6999 7000 80 When I remove the ssh tunnel, everything works fine. The idea is to turn off encryption on the ssh tunnel (to save bandwidth) and turn on maximum compression (to save more bandwidth). This is because it's a satellite link. Here's the ssh tunnel I've been using: ssh -C -f -C -o CompressionLevel=9 -o Cipher=none [email protected] -L 7000:172.16.1.224:6999 -N The trouble is, I don't know how to get data from Squid on x.x.x.224 into the ssh tunnel? Am I going about this the wrong way? Should I create an ssh tunnel on x.x.x.218? I use iptables to stop squid on x.x.x.224 from reading port 80, but to feed from port 6999 instead (i.e. via the ssh tunnel). Do I need another iptables rule? Any comments greatly appreciated. • How can I get pidgin to replace animations/graphics with their alt text?

  I have a few contacts who use annoying text-to-animation plugins in their clients, that do things like turn the word "hi" into an animation of Kermit the Frog waving at me, or other equally annoying non-sense. This is even more annoying when it does the conversion mid-word, like turning "This" into "T<Kermit waving>s". To get around this annoying behavior, I often find myself copying their text from pidgin, and pasting into a text editor, which always replaces the animations with their original text (presumably by way of some html ALT tag, or the moral equivalent). Obviously pidgin knows what the original text was, because it was able to provide that text to the copy buffer. So how can I get Pidgin to just show me the original text, as if there were no annoying animations in the first place?

• How to circumvent ISP Limiting "Unknown" traffic - (SSH)Proxy, VPN

  I am having issues with using a proxy/VPN, with my current ISP (Comenersol, Spain). From my point of view they limit traffic by protocol or by traffic they "know" and "dont know". I'll explain my findings so far below. Internet connection in Spain: ~400-420KByte/sec (speedtest.net) OpenVPN Server in Sweden(pfsense): 100/100Mbit. LZO Compression. TCP. Tun. Aes128 Squid Proxy server in Sweden (pfsense): 100/100 (same box as the vpn server). Plain, no encryption. Runs in stealth mode to hide the use of proxy. NOT running OpenVPN or Squid Proxy, this is my findings: When I download a file from my pfsense box in Sweden, I get maximum speed When I run speedtest.net and choose any european server (including Swedish), I get max speed When I download a torrent (with non default port above 10K), I get limited to ~100KByte/sec. Encryption is turned off If I download something through https, I get max speed Running either Squid Proxy or VPN, this is my findings When I download a file from my pfsense box in Sweden, I get ~100KByte/sec When I run speedtest.net and choose any european server (including Swedish and Spanish), I get ~100Kbyte/sec When I download a torrent, I get same limitation ~100KByte/sec When I download something through https, I get ~100KByte/sec I verify the speeds above with speedtest.net measure, firefox measure in addition to having bmon running in terminal in the background. This way I am certain that the speeds I get presented, are in fact correct. If I connect through a different ISP with VPN or Squid Proxy, I get better speeds (400KByte/sec ++) In short: Whenever I tunnel my traffic through Sweden, my SPanish ISP throttles the traffic. I thought tunneling it through Squid would solve the issue, since I then would no longer hide my traffic through encryption. This does not seem to be the case. Wget and fetch gives same result. I did not try 'nc', but I assume this would give the same result. Does anyone know how to circumvent this issue? I would very much like to be able to get full speed with Swedish ip, as this would make me able to stream TV at higher quality than today. 100KByte/sec just does not cut it quality wise.   I've got a PFSense firewall/gateway on our network. Everything works great except for the fact that I cannot access one specific website. Pfsense is running the following packages Country Block LightSquid nmap notes squid squidGuard Strikeback I can access every single website I've ever tried aside from one that we need for business use (http://bridalnetwork.ca) here's the traceroute frodo:~ chase$ traceroute bridalnetwork.ca traceroute to bridalnetwork.ca (192.197.103.73), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 rohan (192.168.5.1) 6.618 ms 1.662 ms 9.207 ms 2 * * * 3 * * rohan (192.168.5.1) 7.225 ms !H 4 rohan (192.168.5.1) 5.314 ms !H 5.701 ms !H 7.573 ms !H frodo:~ chase$ How can I figure out what the reason behind the blockage is? note: this has been tested on every computer on the network with the same results. ps: the pfsense box is 'rohan' (192.168.5.1) Here's what I get with Squid enabled and here's what I get with Squid disabled

• Go for Zend framework or Django for a modular web application?

  I am using both Zend framework and Django, and they both have they strengths and weakness, but they are both good framworks in their own way. I do want to create a highly modular web application, like this example: modules: Admin cms articles sections ... ... ... I also want all modules to be self contained with all confid and template files. I have been looking into a way to solve this is zend the last days, but adding one omer level to the module setup doesn't feel right. I am sure this could be done, but should I? I have also included Doctrine to my zend application that could give me even more problems in my module setup! When we are talking about Django this is easy to implement (Easy as in concept, not in implementation time or whatever) and a great way to create web apps. But one of the downsides of Django is the web hosing part. There are some web hosts offering Django support, but not that many.. So then I guess the question is what have the most value; rapid modular development versus hosting options! Well, comments are welcome! Thanks

• Windows 7 - Windows get autoselected

  I have a really annoying problem in Windows 7. I just updated Windows vista to Windows 7 32bit The problem is that every second the top windows is being selected. To explain better what happens: I open task manager and leave it there, then i select a icon on desktop, after 1 second, the icon is deselected and Task Manager windows is selected. Also i see windows borders blinking, every second. This is Annoying, because every time i do a right click or selecting a menu in any application, every second the menu get closed... I do not know what is doing this, i searched in task manager for some 'bad' application running, but seems ok, tried closing all programs but it's still there. If i restart the computer first i don't get that problem, but after a while it start.. I noticed that When using Visual Studio Express 2012, but i don't think is the problem, because also if i close VS the problem remains. Hope you can help me, i'm getting hungry!! It's annoying!

It works well for Apple updates, but I'm still stuck with either manually downloading and installing Adobe/Microsoft updates on each computer or running them through a Squid cache, with the blind faith that Squid will keep the files I actually want to stay cached. What is the best way to cache updates locally for applications like the Adobe Updater or Microsoft AutoUpdate? Ideally cached in such a way that I can tell which files I do or do not have cached. It would also be nice to be able to cache things for other software like Firefox and Sparkle-enabled apps, but these are usually small enough to ignore.

  i have several subdomains(git.example.org, build.example.org, etc.), i have a router with an external ip and i have several virtual machines on a host computer with internal ips. Now i want to route git.example.org to internal ip 10.0.2.1 and build.example.org to internal ip 10.0.2.2. How can I do this? I setup in the Router that all traffic on port 80 is comming to my host computer with internal ip 10.0.2.3 and installed Squid on that computer. • Block a machine from accessing the internet

  After some confirmation that I have thinking right in this scenario. We have a number of wired and wireless machines which presently have direct internet access. I also have a Linux (Ubuntu) server which is used as a file server for the network. Essentially I would like to be able to turn internet access on and off for machines. My plan is to block these machines by MAC address at the router. I would then set up a proxy server on the Linux box (ie Squid) so that the machines I wish to restrict can access the internet via the proxy. As I can adjust access via ACLs in squid, I would be able to switch on or off a machines access to the internet without having to further adjust the router's MAC rules. And of course I could go further and create a few scripts to assist with this admin task. Does this seem sound and have I over looked anything? Any help greatly appreciated. Simon.

I want to proxy into IP-X and have my request look like its coming from IP-X. I currently do this on squid, but we need to proxy more than just HTTP traffic.   Exactly the opposite of http://superuser.com/questions/101482/global-scroll-acceleration-in-windows, is there a way to disable scroll-accelartion on windows (touchpad -- maybe from lenovo drivers). It's heck of annoying -- using no accelartion but high sensitivity like on linux is so much more precise. ( With this silly acceleration, I either have incredibly slow scrolling, or scrolling so fast it skips whole chunks of text at once. Speed control but not acceleration control. Could say the same for mouse cursor, though that's less annoying. )

  Running 12.04 LTS. This is extremely annoying and makes me want to try another flavor of Linux. Yes, this little inconvenience is that annoying to me. Most of the time the launcher will appear nice and easy as soon as I mouse over the upper left corner, but many times, the left edge of the screen will get a little darker, but the launcher will not appear. By seeing the edge darken, I know that the OS is acknowledging my mouse's presence in the corner. Only by "stabbing" the corner with my mouse can I get it to appear. I just want the launcher to appear as soon as I mouse over the corner. Any help would be great.
