• Ubuntu eats itself after I followed updater instruction

  Updater (I assume) put a no entry style alert icon on the panel which informed me that certain package dependencies were not up to snuff. Upgrades were thereafter only partial. The dialogue advised that I (and this is from noob memory) sudo apt-get install -f. I did this and typed in the confirmation phrase and watched apt-get systematically remove every component of linux, both the stuff I installed and the core ubuntu packages. I could only assume at this stage that this was for a fresh install but of course, I know better now. There's much complaint about Windows, but I've never met with advice from Microsoft tools to wipe out the operating system because of a couple of missing .dlls. So what gives? This was a 64 bit install of 12.04. All that is left is grub pointing to a couple of windows recovery partitions on the hard drive. I'm tempted, but I have hopes of recovering the data that I had enough misguided faith to trust to the linux ext4 partition. I've tried pen driving back into it with a 32 bit iso but I'm simply informed that ubuntu is running in low graphics mode and get to watch the dots cycle indefinitely. EDIT: Thanks for the advice vis positive request. I've got onto the machine with a 64 bit stick and can see the file structure left behind by the installation. My first instinct was to run install from the stick but it did not seem to offer a recovery option. My question then: is there a way to recover the current installation so that if I reinstall the packages I had they will pick up the original settings. I'm particularly worried about losing email from evolution - the rest I could probably lash back together. I would also be interested how this disaster came about. I see people in the know recommending this same procedure in similar circumstances. Thanks for your attention, Tony Martin

• Google Analytics cookie across SagePay checkout

  We use SagePay's Server integration for our online payments. We use Google Analytics to track activity on our website and Google Ecommerce tracking to log transactions. In Google Analytics, under the Ecommerce view, it shows direct/none for source/medium, as the 1st party cookie is lost when visiting the external SagePay checkout pages before the customer is redirected to my confirmation page which tracks the transaction. In all the answers I have viewed when searching for a solution, the suggestion is to alter the tracking code to read _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'none']); _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); but this needs to be implemented on all pages, including 3rd party domains (SagePay). As SagePay don't allow javascript in their template customisation, what can I do? Is there another way? Edit: I just found this code: var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker('UA-XXXXX-X'); pageTracker._setCampNameKey('ga_campaign'); // name pageTracker._setCampMediumKey('ga_medium'); // medium pageTracker._setCampSourceKey('ga_source'); // source pageTracker._setCampNOKey('ga_nooverride'); // don't override pageTracker._trackPageview(); Could I store pre-checkout values for source/campaign/medium to a cookie and the retrieve it post-checkout into the code above, or would this start a new tracking session?

• What are Web runtime environments and programming languages

  I've been looking into the details behind these two different categories: Web runtime environments Web application programming languages I believe I have the correct information and have phrased it correctly but I am unsure. I have been searching for a while but only find snippets of information or what I can see as useless information (I could be wrong). Here are my descriptions so far: Web runtime environments - A Run-time environment implements part of the core behaviour of any computer language and allows it to be modified via an API or embedded domain-specific language. A web runtime environment is similar except it uses web based languages such as Java-script which utilises the core behaviour a computer language. Another example of a Run-time environment web language is JsLibs which is a standable JavaScript development runtime environment for using JavaScript as a general all round scripting language. JavaScript is often used to create responsive interfaces which improve the user experience and provide dynamic functionality without having to wait for the server to react and direct to another page. Web application programming languages - A web application program language is something that mimics a traditional desktop application within a web page. For example, using PHP you can create forms and tables which use a database similar to that of Microsoft Excel. • HP Recovery Manager failed creating a backup disc

  I had to restore my computer (running Windows 7) back to its factory default, so I ran the HP recovery manager disc and chose to reformat my computer. Before doing this I was given an option to backup my current files to a DVD, and I did so; getting the confirmation of a successful DVD burn. Booting up my computer everything looks like it did when I first purchased it (like expected). But when I pop in the backup DVD and run the recovery EXE inside it, the application creates a directory inside C:\System Recovery Files which contains the empty directories: [(^_^)] and Program Data. So essentially what I'm getting out of this is a failure in creating a back-up. Which is not only confusing but incredibly frusterating. Is there any way that I can recover the files lost in the

• How to change from own Internal/Extrernal DNS to use an outsourced service like DNS Made Easy?

  Our current setup is a co-located linux box with an openvz kernel with a handful virtual containers for www, mail etc. and one container run Bind9 with a split views configuration serving External and Internal DNS. The HW-Node runs a shorewall firewall and all containers uses private ip's. The box (and DNS) basically handles web and mail for a handful domains and it works well but we still think it would be a good idea to outsource the public DNS and now to my question... Although I am fairly comfortable with the server stuff and DNS, I'm far from a pro and guess I basically need some confirmation that I am thinking in the right direction in that I basically just move the content of our external view (with zone files) to the external service and keep the internal view (or actually remove the view), update the new external DNS with thier names servers, update the info at my registrar and wait for propagation or have I missed something? Maybe someone else here run something similar already and can share some exteriences? I found this question which at least confirms it can be done.

• Value of the HTML5 lang attribute

  I'm working on a website which will offer localized content following the language+region approach as described on this W3.org page (e.g. fr-CA for Canadian French content, and fr-FR for "French French" content). As we consider content for each language+region to be unique, it is crucial to us that search engines properly identify and serve the content accordingly. By looking up on the Internet (e.g. this question), it appears that most people recommend the use of an ISO639 language code in the HTML lang attribute to describe the content language. Following this recommendation, we would en up using <html lang="fr"> which wouldn't enable the differentiation between the aforementioned language+region combinations. When reviewing the HTML4 specification, it seems that using language+region as a language code would be perfectly OK, as the en-US example is given as one possible value. However I couldn't find any confirmation of this in the HTML5 specification which doesn't seem to provide any example as to the possible allowed values. From there I tried to get a de facto answer by looking at what the web giants are doing. • Can I easily use a VPN to duplicate SSH Tunneling functionality?

  Right now, when I want to use an unsecured wireless connection with my (Linux) laptop, I secure my connection using a variation of the method provided here. However, to the best of my knowledge, the (non-jailbroken) iPad does not allow applications to tunnel traffic through local ports. However, it does seem to allow certain VPN traffic. I have never set up, or even used, a VPN before. I'm looking for confirmation that I'm not barking up the wrong tree before I invest significant effort into setting up my own VPN server. If I want to secure my wireless iPad traffic over an unsecure wireless connection, would I be on the right track by looking at a VPN?

• 255 Character limit on VLOOKUP

  Using excel 2003, the formula: =VLOOKUP(D1 ,A1:B135, 2) fails if the length of D1 exceeds 255 characters (i.e. the list has some text longer then 255 characters, D1 has the same text value, and VLOOKUP returns #VALUE!). MATCH seems to suffer from the same character limit. I cannot find any official confirmation of these limits, for example here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/vlookup-HP005209335.aspx or here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/excel-specifications-and-limits-HP005199291.aspx?CTT=3 I know that excel has a 255 limit on the length of text used in formulae, but it suggests connate should work (it does not in this case, and I am not using strings in the formula, but referencing another cell). Can somebody confirm that these limit exist (it is always possible I am doing something else wrong)? More importantly, does anyone know of a way around them? Thanks

• ubuntu 11.10 foreman error

  Like this post I am also trying to complete this heroku tutorial I have installed and used everything (node.js, npm, express) successfully until I got to Foreman. I installed Foreman by first installing Ruby: alex@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1 then installing Foreman. • Warnings When Undo Isn't Possible

  Enjoyed this post Never Use a Warning When you Mean Undo by Aza Raskin. It makes sense never to warn users if an undo option is possible. The examples given are from the web space. Here's the conclusion: Warnings cause us to lose our work, to mistrust our computers, and to blame ourselves. A simple but foolproof design methodology solves the problem: "Never use a warning when you mean undo." And when a user is deleting their work, you always mean undo. However, in enterprise apps you may find that an undo option isn't technically possible or desirable. Objects may be shared, part of a flow elsewhere, or undoing something committed to the database (a rollback I guess) may not be feasible if it becomes locked by another process. Plus, what constitutes user ownership of objects isn't always clear to users. The implications of delete (and other) actions need to be clearly communicated out in advance. Really, warnings are important in the enterprise space. Data has a very high value, and users can perform a wide variety of actions that may risk that data, not always within the application itself (at browser level, for example). That said, throwing warnings all over the place when an undo option is possible is annoying. Instead, treat warnings with respect. When there is no undo option possible, use warning messages to communicate potentially dangerous or irrecoverable actions or the downstream consequences of user actions on the process or task flow. Force the user to respond to a warning message by using a modal dialog with clearly labeled action buttons. Here's a couple of examples. A great article that got me thinking. Let's see more like that. Let's not forget there's more types of messages than just error messages. User assistance and user experience professionals need to understand when best to use confirmation, information, and warning types too!

  Hello, this should be a relatively simple question. I'm attempting to get my windows wireless card to work with ubuntu, booted from my portable hard drive. This is the guide I'm attempting to follow is on help.ubuntu.com, /community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper My wireless card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 AirForce One 54g 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller. My computer is an HP Pavilion Entertainment dv5 notebook, which came with Vista 64. I would like confirmation about which of the drivers I should use. At this point, I'm leaning towards Broadcom BCM4318 HP Pavilion zv6000, but I thought it best to ask advice before taking action.
