  • "Hello World" in less than 20 bytes

    - by xelurg
We have had an interesting competition once, where everyone would write their implementation of hello world program. One requirement was that is should be less than 20 bytes in compiled form. the winner would be the one whose version is the smallest... What would be your solution? :) Platform: 32bit, x86 OS: DOS, Win, GNU/Linux, *BSD Language: Asm, C, or anything else that compiles into binary executable (i.e. no bash scripts and stuff ;)

  • How Do You Make An Assembler?

    - by mudge
I'd like to make a simple x86 assembler. I'm wondering if there's any tutorials for making your own assembler. Or if there's a simple assembler that I could study. Also, I wonder what tools are used in looking at and handling the binary/hex of programs.

  • flip a 1bpp .bmp image horizontally

    - by user576844
I am trying to write a program containing two source files: main program written in C and assembly(x86 32 and 64) module callable from C. The C declaration for the assembly routine looks like this: void mirrorbmp1(void *img, int width, int height) The task involves Mirror/flipping a 1 bpp .BMP image horizontally while Handling any image width properly, not only multiples of 8. I am new to assembly programming and have very little idea about how i should do the ask. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Easy way to convert c code to assembly?

    - by Bob
Is there an easy way (like a free program) that can covert c/c++ code to x86 assembly? I know that any c compiler does something very similar and that I can just compile the c code and then disassemble the complied executable, but that's kind of an overkill, all I want is to convert a few lines of code. Does anyone know of some program that can do that?

  • mysql-python on Snow Leopard with MySQL 64-bit

    - by Derek Reynolds
Can't seem to get mysql-python to work on Snow Leopard for the life of me. Currently using the default version of python that ships with Snow Leopard (python 2.6.1). Installed MySQL 5.1.45 x86_64. I download the source for mysql-python http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysql-python/ and compile with the following commands: tar xzf MySQL-python-1.2.3c1.tar.gz cd MySQL-python-1.2.3c1 ARCHFLAGS='-arch x86_64' python setup.py build ARCHFLAGS='-arch x86_64' python setup.py install And am getting the following error when I try to import: Python 2.6.1 (r261:67515, Jul 7 2009, 23:51:51) [GCC 4.2.1 (Apple Inc. build 5646)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import MySQLdb Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "build/bdist.macosx-10.6-universal/egg/MySQLdb/__init__.py", line 19, in <module> File "build/bdist.macosx-10.6-universal/egg/_mysql.py", line 7, in <module> File "build/bdist.macosx-10.6-universal/egg/_mysql.py", line 6, in __bootstrap__ ImportError: dlopen(/Users/derek/.python-eggs/MySQL_python-1.2.3c1-py2.6-macosx-10.6-universal.egg-tmp/_mysql.so, 2): no suitable image found. • explorer.exe eating all CPU, how to to detect culprit?

    - by JohnDoe
Windows 7 64bit. I am using ProcessExplorer from Sysinternals, and it says, that the offending call is ntdll.dll!RtlValidateHeap+0x170 however, the call stack towards the entry is always different, so it's hard for me to track the problem. Maybe it's a mal-programed trojan, causing exceptions in Explorer.exe, but that is only a wild speculation. Explorer.exe is then consuming 25% (a core on a dual core). Killing the process makes the task bar go away, respawning from task manager, and half a minute later it's again eating all CPU cycles.

  • Out of sync audio / video on Hackintosh

    - by user22902
I have a PC with OSx86 (10.6.2) on it. Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

  • File system loop detected in /var/named/chroot/var/named/

    - by Iko
The problem start with a message No space left on device. After investigating a little (with google's help) I found : find: File system loop detected; /var/named/chroot/var/named' is part of the same file system loop as/var/named'. What I don't know is what to do next. I found this on centos.org : and see if the inode numbers are the same (they shouldn't be). If they are then you need to remove the /var/named/chroot/var/named/ hard link and recreate it as a directory the inode number are the same but I don't know exactly which folder to delete and what to do next thank you for any help Linux xxxxx.onlinehome-server.info 2.6.32-220.13.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Apr 17 23:56:34 BST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  • Understanding the nop byte(s)

    - by Cole Johnson
Ok, so I was reading through the AMD64 manuels and knowing that nop is really an xchg eax, eax, I looked at the xchg and found something interesting, that it seems a byte can be encoded into the instruction for specifying the registers (apologies I'm on my iPod): picture. So what I am wondering is how does the processor know if there is a byte after to work with or is it that that extra register has to be of type rAX causing it to actually still be the one byte 0x90

  • Debian x86_64 + Nginx + PHP5-FPM optimization

    - by Olal'a
I used to have a VPS (512MB) from Linode and I was running nginx + php5-fpm (which comes with php5.3.3) on Debian Lenny (i686). The total memory usage was about 90-100MB. Now I have another VPS (different hosting company) and I also run nginx + php5-fpm on Debian Lenny (x86_64). The system is 64-bit, so the memory usage is higher now, about 210-230MB, which I think is too much. • Calculating RAM Performance? Example: DDR3-2133 CL9-11-10-28 1.65V vs DDR3-1600 CL10-10-10-30 1.5V

    - by user1131467
How do you calculate the relative performance of PC RAM? For example, what is the relative performance of the following: G.Skill Ripjaws Z 8 x 4GB Kit, DDR3-2133, [email protected] G.Skill Ripjaws Z 4 x 8GB Kit, DDR3-1600, [email protected] If it's relevant, when they are used in a top of the line ASUS Rampage IV Extreme motherboard and Intel i7 3960X? By performance, I mean relative: read latency write latency read bandwidth write bandwidth Please include working. (I mean how did you arrive at the figures based on timing and DDR3-speed)

  • Internet Explorer defaults to 64-bit version

    - by Tim Long
My IE8 has suddenly started defaulting to the 64-bit version. I have no idea how or why this has happened, but I suspect it might be linked to the Browser Choice Screen that Microsoft was recently forced to display by EU law. However, many web sites will not display correctly in IE8 x64 (eg. sites that use Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight). I have the 32-bit version of IE pinned to my taskbar and if I launch it manually, everything is fine. But when I click on a URL from another program and IE is not already running, then the 64-bit version gets launched. This really messes with programs like BBC iPlayer which rely heavily on Adbobe Air and Flash. So, how do I get IE8 32-bit version to be the default version again? I've tried using the "default programs" control panel and that doesn;t make any difference (in fact, it doesn't give the choice between x84 and x64 versions, it just lists "internet explorer").

  • What does the ".align" x86 Assembler directive do exactly? [migrated]

    - by Sinister Clock
I will list exactly what I do not understand, and show you the parts I can not understand as well. First off, The .Align Directive .align integer, pad. The .align directive causes the next data generated to be aligned modulo integer bytes 1.~ ? : What is implied with "causes the next data generated to be aligned modulo integer bytes?" I can surmise that the next data generated is a memory-to-register transfer, no? Modulo would imply the remainder of a division. I do not understand "to be aligned modulo integer bytes"....... What would be a remainder of a simple data declaration, and how would the next data generated being aligned by a remainder be useful? If the next data is aligned modulo, that is saying the next generated data, whatever that means exactly, is the remainder of an integer? That makes absolutely no sense. What specifically would the .align, say, .align 8 directive issued in x86 for a data byte compiled from a C char, i.e., char CHARACTER = 0; be for? Or specifically coded directly with that directive, not preliminary Assembly code after compiling C? I have debugged in Assembly and noticed that any C/C++ data declarations, like chars, ints, floats, etc. will insert the directive .align 8 to each of them, and add other directives like .bss, .zero, .globl, .text, .Letext0, .Ltext0. What are all of these directives for, or at least my main asking? I have learned a lot of the main x86 Assembly instructions, but never was introduced or pointed at all of these strange directives. How do they affect the opcodes, and are all of them necessary?

  • MUL instruction help

    - by Tanner Babcock
I've read a few tutorials and examples, but I cannot wrap my head around how the MUL instruction works. I've used ADD and SUB without problems. So apparently this instruction multiplies its operand by the value in a register. What register (eax, ebp, esp, etc.) is multiplied by the first operand? And what register is the result stored in, so I can move it to the stack? Sorry, I'm just learning x86 assembly. When I try to compile this line... mull $9 I get, "Error: suffix or operands invalid for 'mul'". Can anyone help me out? Thanks. EDIT: OK Madhur, I replaced "mull" with "mul" and I'm still getting the same error. Here's the whole source. .globl _main _main: pushl %ebp movl %esp, %ebp subl $8, %esp movl $7, %eax mul $9 movl %eax, (%esp) call _putchar xorl %eax, %eax leave ret

  • Endianness inside CPU registers

    - by Abhishek Tamhane
I need help understanding endianness inside CPU registers of x86 processors. I wrote this small assembly program: section .data section .bss section .text global _start _start: nop mov eax, 0x78FF5ABC mov ebx,'WXYZ' nop ; GDB breakpoint here. mov eax, 1 mov ebx, 0 int 0x80 I ran this program in GDB with a breakpoint on line number 10 (commented in the source above). At this breakpoint, info registers shows the value of eax=0x78ff5abc and ebx=0x5a595857. Since the ASCII codes for W, X, Y, Z are 57, 58, 59, 5A respectively; and intel is little endian, 0x5a595857 seems like the correct byte order (least significant byte first). Why isn't then the output for eax register 0xbc5aff78 (least significant byte of the number 0x78ff5abc first) instead of 0x78ff5abc?
