• Performance - User defined query / filter to search data

  What is the best way to design a system where users can create their own criterias to search data ? By "design" i mean, data storage, data access layer and search structure. We will actually refactor an existing application which is written in C# and ASP .NET and we don't want to change the infrastructure. Our main issue is performance and we use MSSQL and DevExpress to build queries. Some queries run in 4-5 minutes and all the columns included in the queries have indexes. When i check queries, i see that DevExpress builds too many "exists" clauses and i'm not happy with that because i have doubts that some of these queries skip some indexes. What may be the alternatives to DevExpress? NHibernate or Entity Framework? Can we build dynamic criteria system and store these to database in both of them ? And also do we need any alternative storage like a lucene index or OLAP database?

I have written an Internet Explorer Add-on and I've registered it by putting it in HKCU but by default it falls off the screen so users are having trouble finding it.   Hi, I'm starting a new project. It will run on devices running Windows CE, Windows Mobile 6 and will also have a desktop version. The software will connect to some equipments through the serial port, using it's own protocol. Basically it will: connect to the equipment send and receive info read and write binary files These tasks will be shared between desktop and mobile devices. I've been searching the information I need, but I still have some doubts: If I target Windows CE devices it will work with Windows Mobile 6 too? Creating a class library targeting Windows CE will give me any trouble on using it in the desktop version? (when I add a reference to that class library, my VS says that I could experience some unexpected results) Is it possible to install .NET CF 3.5 on devices running Windows CE 4.2? Thanks!

• RPM build process without installing

  I'm trying to build my own rpm package and have a couple of doubts. First of all, in several places I've red that one shouldn't build rpms as root. Why is that? During the building process, rpmbuild has to go through the install stage where it installs files to the system. As far as I understand I can't do that if I'm not root. rpmbuild process finishes with error. So, the question is if it is really possible to build an rpm without installing stuff into the system? Or eventually I do have to become root to complete the build process?

I know I can change the value of i by using *iPtr, but how can I change the value of the object being pointed to by jPtr? How will changing the object being pointed to by jPtr affect the value of the object pointed to by iPtr, and i ?

• What mail storage should I choose for our web application; IMAP, key-valud store, rdbms, ...

  I have to store e-mail messages for use with our application. I have "metadata" for all messages inside a relational database, but I don't feel comfortable keeping message content (gigabytes and terabytes of email data) inside a database. I'm currently using IMAP as a storage, but I have my doubts if I choose correctly. First of all there is a problem of uidvalidity and how to keep a permanent reference to message inside IMAP. Second, I'm not sure if this is the most robust solution in terms of backup/restore strategies, corruption of store, replication ... Positive side is that I can query IMAP using the headers because the data is mostly indexed. I don't know if key-value stores are a better approach (Casandra, Tokyo cabinet, redis). How they handle storing 1KB and 50MB of data. How they prevent corruption and when corruption or device failure happens how can I repair the store.

  I have a webservice with following operation contract and my service is hosted at //localhost:9002/Service.svc/ (I did not put http: before the localhost, as new user can post only one hyperlink) [OperationContract] [WebGet ( UriTemplate = "/Files/{Filepath}" ) ] Stream DownloadFile(string Filepath); This webservice would let users download file, if the proper filepath is provided (assuming, i somehow findout proper filepath). Now, I can access this service from a browser by typing, //localhost:9002/Service.svc/Files/(Filepath} If {filepath} is some simple string, its not a problem, but i want to send the location of the file. Lets us say users want to download file "C:\Test.mp3" on the server. But how can I pass "C:\Test.mp3" as {Filepath}. I get an error when i type http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/Files/C:\Test.mp3 in the browser. I am new to webservices and find that quickest way to clear doubts is in this community.

  We're going to start a new huge project and while it's in the process of architecting the system, I have certain doubts whether I can apply patterns and be sure they won't be violated by team members. The problem is, not all team members have enough skills to develop asp.net apps let's say using MVP pattern. So maybe this question is addressed to Team leads, or experienced devs. Did you dealt with this kind of situation, and if so what was your solution.   I read the Wikipedia articles on FactoryMethod and AbstractFactory but the following code doesn't seem to fit anywhere.   I have to write an app for iPad that would take data from SQL Server and post it to the iPad. I looked up on this over the Internet and found that i have to write a web service to expose the data from SQL server using ASP.NET. I did an app previously in android that would take data from my dropbox a/c and display it to the user. I made use of the drop-box api available. I was wondering if anything like that exists for SQL?   I a reading Kerninghan and Ritchie's C programming language book and on page 37 it mentions byte sized bit patterns like : '\013' for vertical tab . '\007' for bell character . My doubts : What is byte sized in it and and what's a bit pattern ? What relevance does this hold and where can I apply it ? Is it in any sense related to escape sequences ? I can't seem to find any information what so ever about these byte sized bit patterns on the web . please help . thanks .

  Hi, I am getting the GUI flicker when reading a file properties and accordingly enabling/disabling checkbox and List value in listbox. when i remove this file reading code the GUI doesnt have flicker. I am reading the properties before creating the Preferences in OnCreate().   I am trying to create a custom panel in wpf. Here the doubts I have, How do I consider the HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment factors while placing the items within my panel. Should I check for these flags in my ArrangeOverride method ?? Consider that I want to write a WrapPanel clone. If the panel's width is set to "Auto", how do I get the actual width of the panel to arrange my child items. I always get the ActualWidth/ActualHeight as 0. Am I missing something??? Please help.

  simple really.. I am have been asked to do a mobile site (straight html + css (+ maybe jquery mobile later on)). The site will need to support the new type smart phone and the old type Nokia/(Symbian OS) with the web browser. Doubts and reservations aside as to anyone without a smart phone would bother visiting this site it still needs to support it. My first question is do older phones support PNG images and transparancey...   In an application, i saw that they used to display pictures of vehicles. But what was amazing was when we touch and swipe in that picture, it rotates in 3d way left and right. And from the front view we can rotate and get to see its back view also. It is a very good feature and i was trying to replicate it. But couldnt get an idea of how and where to start.   Hi, I would like to create a web based regional map that would enable the user to click in order to choose a region on the map, and will also have some visual effect (resizing, etc) when hovering over one of the regions. I want the map to work on desktops and mobile devices. I'm having doubts regarding the best technology to use here when I'm mainly considering traditional image maps vs.SVG. Image map are more widely supported, but any animation that effects only a single area in the map must be hacked over. SVG is a more natural fit, but is not supported by Android (old IEs can work using svgweb) Any advice? Any other option I'm overlooking?

  I am new to SSL programming and finding some difficulties in understanding SSL concepts. I tried to get it through openssl site,but it is not much informative. Here is my doubts. What is difference between SSL Buffer and BIO buffer..? I mean layerwise detail will be very helpful. Can I use SSL_Write and SSL_Read without setting any BIO object to SSL object..? What exactly BIO_flush will do... I mean is it going to flush all the data to network buffer from BIO buffer.. ? If it is possible to do write and read data from SSL directly without using any BIO object then is it possible to flush the data from SSL buffer to network buffer by any means.. ? It would be very helpful if any body explain these things or giving any links where I can find answers to my questions.

• How to order my objects in a C++ class correctly

  Hello, I have been coding regurlarly in C++ in the past months. I am getting used to it step by step... but there are things that confuse me about formatting. I know there is a lot of legacy from C that I supousee mixes with C++. This time I have doubts about how to order properly my members and functions within in a class. Also considering their access modifiers. How is the convention in this? Until know I am doing everything "public" and writing first constructor of class, then destructor, next members and finally functions. It this correct? What happens when introducing "private" and "protected" access modifiers or "virtual" functions? From the documents I have look in the Internet there is different ways of doing things. But my questions aims to get the knowledge from a community that develops in C++ that I want to blend into. ;-) Thanks a lot!!!
