  • Language+IDE for teaching high school students?

    I'm investigating languages and IDEs for a project involving teaching high-school students (around grade 11). It will teach basics of programming as an introduction to computer science (e.g., including how numbers/strings/characters are represented, using procedures and arrays, control flow, a little bit of algorithms, only very basic I/O). The non-negotiable requirements for this project are: a free up-to-date cross-platform IDE (Win & Mac incl. 64-bit) with debug a compiler where it's easy to learn from your mistakes together with the IDE, a gentle installation+learning curve So far, the best options I see are the following. Are there others I should know about? I am giving a short explanation with each one to generally show what I am looking for. In order from most to least promising: Pascal + FreePascal IDE (it seems a little buggy but actively developed?) Python + Eclipse + PyDev (good but features are overwhelming/hard to navigate) Groovy + Eclipse ('') Python + IDLE (looks unnatural to do debugging, to me) Pascal + Lazarus (IDE overwhelming, e.g. not obvious how to "start from scratch") Preferably, as a rule of thumb, the language should be direct enough that you don't need to wrap every program in a class, don't need to reference a System object to println, etc. I tried a little bit to see if there is something in JavaScript or (non-Visual) Basic along the lines of what I want, but found nothing so far. I would say that C/C++/C#, Java, Ruby, Lisp, VB do not fit my criteria for languages for this project. To reiterate my questions: are any of those 5 options really awesome or un-awesome? Are there other options which are even MORE awesome? Anything for Basic or JavaScript which meets all of the criteria? Thanks!

  • Java Sorting "queue" list based on DateTime and Z Position (part of school project)

    For a school project i have a list of 50k containers that arrive on a boat. These containers need to be sorted in a list in such a way that the earliest departure DateTimes are at the top and the containers above those above them. This list then gets used for a crane that picks them up in order. I started out with 2 Collection.sort() methods: 1st one to get them in the right XYZ order Collections.sort(containers, new Comparator<ContainerData>() { @Override public int compare(ContainerData contData1, ContainerData contData2) { return positionSort(contData1.getLocation(),contData2.getLocation()); } }); Then another one to reorder the dates while keeping the position in mind: Collections.sort(containers, new Comparator<ContainerData>() { @Override public int compare(ContainerData contData1, ContainerData contData2) { int c = contData1.getLeaveDateTimeFrom().compareTo(contData2.getLeaveDateTimeFrom()); int p = positionSort2(contData1.getLocation(), contData2.getLocation()); if(p != 0) c = p; return c; } }); But i never got this method to work.. What i got working now is rather quick and dirty and takes a long time to process (50seconds for all 50k): First a sort on DateTime: Collections.sort(containers, new Comparator<ContainerData>() { @Override public int compare(ContainerData contData1, ContainerData contData2) { return contData1.getLeaveDateTimeFrom().compareTo(contData2.getLeaveDateTimeFrom()); } }); Then a correction function that bumps top containers up: containers = stackCorrection(containers); private static List<ContainerData> stackCorrection(List<ContainerData> sortedContainerList) { for(int i = 0; i < sortedContainerList.size(); i++) { ContainerData current = sortedContainerList.get(i); // 5 = Max Stack (0 index) if(current.getLocation().getZ() < 5) { //Loop through possible containers above current for(int j = 5; j > current.getLocation().getZ(); --j) { //Search for container above for(int k = i + 1; k < sortedContainerList.size(); ++k) if(sortedContainerList.get(k).getLocation().getX() == current.getLocation().getX()) { if(sortedContainerList.get(k).getLocation().getY() == current.getLocation().getY()) { if(sortedContainerList.get(k).getLocation().getZ() == j) { //Found -> move container above current sortedContainerList.add(i, sortedContainerList.remove(k)); k = sortedContainerList.size(); i++; } } } } } } return sortedContainerList; } I would like to implement this in a better/faster way.   • Turn old rack server into a telephone server

    I have an old server lying around and I am thinking of using it as an internal telephone server. Its main use would be to set up a 1 to 1 telephone system that could be used internally to connect to different users in different offices. I have looked at software like Asterisk, but it seems that this is mainly for external telephone systems. Is this possible to do with Asterisk (or other software) or is this not possible without involving a VOIP company?

  • Windows 7 : Any way to disable "show caracter" in WIFI network properties?!

    Hi everyone, Here's my issue. I'm working in a school as IT Tech and I'm currently planning to roll out Windows 7 on students laptop. The issue is : When you go to the properties of a WIFI network, you have the fields to input the WIFI key, WPA2 key here in my case, and you also have a checkbox that allow you to "unmask" the caracters of the wifi key. This is actually the problem. Anyone who can access the WIFI network properties, will be able to see the WIFI key, which is really an issue in a school envrironnement where student are all eager to get the key for their precious IPod Touch, what I don't want to happen for obvious reasons... So, is there a way to disable that checkbox or else, make the field cleared out when the checkbox is checked, just like it was on Windows XP or Vista? Thanks all for your answer.

    I've got an old powerbook g4. Battery is totally dead, as is the superdrive. I've looked into selling but it's worth less than it would cost to ship it safely. So I'm considering cracking it open and and taking it's parts and creating some kind of small form factor desktop, probably for the living room.     Hi, I recently have moved my server and changed nameservers and ip, i updated my domain. but somehow in windows 7 when i go to my domain, it resolves old ip even though mac os x shows the new site. Then i edited hosts file with the new ip in windows, it is ok now. but why this happens ? is it about isp cache or sth ? thanks

    I'm not even sure if this is possible with Outlook's current rule set but I thought I'd ask. I'd like emails that meet certain characteristics to automatically be moved from my inbox after they are a day old. I get a lot of notification emails that I end up having to remove the next day manually since I get new ones to replace them each day. So a rule would be like: If the email is from [email protected] and older then 1 day move to already read folder.

    I have a bunch of old files prefixed with "old-" (e.g. "old-abcde.php"). I need an htaccess rule to set up a 301 redirect so that any request for a file starting with "old-" goes to its corresponding new version (e.g. "abcde.php"). To be clear, I have many files, not just one, so I can't do a literal filename match. I basically just need to strip off the "old-" from request and redirect to the version without it. I know I probably just need a simple regular expression, but I'm not good at writing them. Can anyone provide assistance?
