  • ASP.NET Asynchronous Tasks - Worker Thread Not Releasing?

    - by user296752
I am having an issue with testing asynchronous tasks in ASP.NET & IIS7. From what I have read, the worker thread should be released back into the thread pool while the I/O thread performs the async work, allowing ASP.NET to server other incoming requests. But when I simulate heavy load on the web application by making 20 simultaneous requests to a page (async.aspx) that performs long running async tasks, I am unable to browse to some other normal aspx page until the requests are just about done. Am I misunderstanding or missing something here? I am running Vista Biz x64, VS2008 + IIS7. I have the Async attribute applied to the Page directive.

  • Why does use of H264 in sender/receiver pipelines introduce just HUGE delay?

    - by Serguey Zefirov
    When I try to create pipeline that uses H264 to transmit video, I get some enormous delay, up to 10 seconds to transmit video from my machine to... my machine! This is unacceptable for my goals and I'd like to consult StackOverflow over what I (or someone else) do wrong. I took pipelines from gstrtpbin documentation page and slightly modified them to use Speex: This is sender pipeline: #!/bin/sh gst-launch -v gstrtpbin name=rtpbin \ v4l2src ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ffenc_h263 ! rtph263ppay ! rtpbin.send_rtp_sink_0 \ rtpbin.send_rtp_src_0 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5000 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_0 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5001 sync=false async=false \ udpsrc port=5005 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_0 \ pulsesrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! audio/x-raw-int,rate=16000 ! \ speexenc bitrate=16000 ! rtpspeexpay ! rtpbin.send_rtp_sink_1 \ rtpbin.send_rtp_src_1 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5002 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_1 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5003 sync=false async=false \ udpsrc port=5007 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_1 Receiver pipeline: !/bin/sh gst-launch -v\ gstrtpbin name=rtpbin \ udpsrc caps="application/x-rtp,media=(string)video, clock-rate=(int)90000, encoding-name=(string)H263-1998" \ port=5000 ! rtpbin.recv_rtp_sink_0 \ rtpbin. ! rtph263pdepay ! ffdec_h263 ! xvimagesink \ udpsrc port=5001 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_0 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_0 ! udpsink port=5005 sync=false async=false \ udpsrc caps="application/x-rtp,media=(string)audio, clock-rate=(int)16000, encoding-name=(string)SPEEX, encoding-params=(string)1, payload=(int)110" \ port=5002 ! rtpbin.recv_rtp_sink_1 \ rtpbin. ! rtpspeexdepay ! speexdec ! audioresample ! audioconvert ! alsasink \ udpsrc port=5003 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_1 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_1 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5007 sync=false async=false Those pipelines, a combination of H263 and Speex, work fine enough. I snap my fingers near camera and micropohne and then I see movement and hear sound at the same time. Then I changed pipelines to use H264 along the video path. The sender becomes: #!/bin/sh gst-launch -v gstrtpbin name=rtpbin \ v4l2src ! ffmpegcolorspace ! x264enc bitrate=300 ! rtph264pay ! rtpbin.send_rtp_sink_0 \ rtpbin.send_rtp_src_0 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5000 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_0 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5001 sync=false async=false \ udpsrc port=5005 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_0 \ pulsesrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! audio/x-raw-int,rate=16000 ! \ speexenc bitrate=16000 ! rtpspeexpay ! rtpbin.send_rtp_sink_1 \ rtpbin.send_rtp_src_1 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5002 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_1 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5003 sync=false async=false \ udpsrc port=5007 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_1 And receiver becomes: #!/bin/sh gst-launch -v\ gstrtpbin name=rtpbin \ udpsrc caps="application/x-rtp,media=(string)video, clock-rate=(int)90000, encoding-name=(string)H264" \ port=5000 ! rtpbin.recv_rtp_sink_0 \ rtpbin. ! rtph264depay ! ffdec_h264 ! xvimagesink \ udpsrc port=5001 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_0 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_0 ! udpsink port=5005 sync=false async=false \ udpsrc caps="application/x-rtp,media=(string)audio, clock-rate=(int)16000, encoding-name=(string)SPEEX, encoding-params=(string)1, payload=(int)110" \ port=5002 ! rtpbin.recv_rtp_sink_1 \ rtpbin. ! rtpspeexdepay ! speexdec ! audioresample ! audioconvert ! alsasink \ udpsrc port=5003 ! rtpbin.recv_rtcp_sink_1 \ rtpbin.send_rtcp_src_1 ! udpsink host=127.0.0.1 port=5007 sync=false async=false This is what happen under Ubuntu 10.04. I didn't noticed such huge delays on Ubuntu 9.04 - the delays there was in range 2-3 seconds, AFAIR.

  • What is the purpose of "do!" notation in F#?

    - by Yacoder
I'm a beginner in F#, so it's a simple question and maybe a duplicate, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere... I'm reading this LOGO DSL implementation and I don't understand, what is the meaning of the "do!" notation in here: this.Loaded.Add (fun _ -> async { do! Async.Sleep 200 for cmd in theDrawing do do! this.Execute(cmd) } |> Async.StartImmediate ) Can you help?

  • Asynchronous IO in Java?

    - by thr
What options for async io (socket-based) are there in java other then java.nio? Also does java.nio use threads in the backround (as I think .NET's async-socket-library does, maybe it's been changed) or is it "true" async io using a proper select call?

  • Node.js Adventure - Node.js on Windows

    - by Shaun
Two weeks ago I had had a talk with Wang Tao, a C# MVP in China who is currently running his startup company and product named worktile. He asked me to figure out a synchronization solution which helps his product in the future. And he preferred me implementing the service in Node.js, since his worktile is written in Node.js. Even though I have some experience in ASP.NET MVC, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, I don’t think I’m an expert of JavaScript. In fact I’m very new to it. So it scared me a bit when he asked me to use Node.js. But after about one week investigate I have to say Node.js is very easy to learn, use and deploy, even if you have very limited JavaScript skill. And I think I became love Node.js. Hence I decided to have a series named “Node.js Adventure”, where I will demonstrate my story of learning and using Node.js in Windows and Windows Azure. And this is the first one.   (Brief) Introduction of Node.js I don’t want to have a fully detailed introduction of Node.js. There are many resource on the internet we can find. But the best one is its homepage. Node.js was created by Ryan Dahl, sponsored by Joyent. It’s consist of about 80% C/C++ for core and 20% JavaScript for API. It utilizes CommonJS as the module system which we will explain later. The official definition of Node.js is Node.js is a platform built on Chrome's JavaScript runtime for easily building fast, scalable network applications. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices. First of all, Node.js utilizes JavaScript as its development language and runs on top of V8 engine, which is being used by Chrome. It brings JavaScript, a client-side language into the backend service world. So many people said, even though not that actually, “Node.js is a server side JavaScript”. Additionally, Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking IO model. This means in Node.js there’s no way to block currently working thread. Every operation in Node.js executed asynchronously. This is a huge benefit especially if our code needs IO operations such as reading disks, connect to database, consuming web service, etc.. Unlike IIS or Apache, Node.js doesn’t utilize the multi-thread model. In Node.js there’s only one working thread serves all users requests and resources response, as the ST star in the figure below. And there is a POSIX async threads pool in Node.js which contains many async threads (AT stars) for IO operations. When a user have an IO request, the ST serves it but it will not do the IO operation. Instead the ST will go to the POSIX async threads pool to pick up an AT, pass this operation to it, and then back to serve any other requests. The AT will actually do the IO operation asynchronously. Assuming before the AT complete the IO operation there is another user comes. The ST will serve this new user request, pick up another AT from the POSIX and then back. If the previous AT finished the IO operation it will take the result back and wait for the ST to serve. ST will take the response and return the AT to POSIX, and then response to the user. And if the second AT finished its job, the ST will response back to the second user in the same way. As you can see, in Node.js there’s only one thread serve clients’ requests and POSIX results. This thread looping between the users and POSIX and pass the data back and forth. The async jobs will be handled by POSIX. This is the event-driven non-blocking IO model. The performance of is model is much better than the multi-threaded blocking model. For example, Apache is built in multi-threaded blocking model while Nginx is in event-driven non-blocking mode. Below is the performance comparison between them. And below is the memory usage comparison between them. These charts are captured from the video NodeJS Basics: An Introductory Training, which presented at Cloud Foundry Developer Advocate.   Node.js on Windows To execute Node.js application on windows is very simple. First of you we need to download the latest Node.js platform from its website. After installed, it will register its folder into system path variant so that we can execute Node.js at anywhere. To confirm the Node.js installation, just open up a command windows and type “node”, then it will show the Node.js console. As you can see this is a JavaScript interactive console. We can type some simple JavaScript code and command here. To run a Node.js JavaScript application, just specify the source code file name as the argument of the “node” command. For example, let’s create a Node.js source code file named “helloworld.js”. Then copy a sample code from Node.js website. 1: var http = require("http"); 2:  3: http.createServer(function (req, res) { 4: res.writeHead(200, {"Content-Type": "text/plain"}); 5: res.end("Hello World\n"); 6: }).listen(1337, "127.0.0.1"); 7:  8: console.log("Server running at http://127.0.0.1:1337/"); This code will create a web server, listening on 1337 port and return “Hello World” when any requests come. Run it in the command windows. Then open a browser and navigate to http://localhost:1337/. As you can see, when using Node.js we are not creating a web application. In fact we are likely creating a web server. We need to deal with request, response and the related headers, status code, etc.. And this is one of the benefit of using Node.js, lightweight and straightforward. But creating a website from scratch again and again is not acceptable. The good news is that, Node.js utilizes CommonJS as its module system, so that we can leverage some modules to simplify our job. And furthermore, there are about ten thousand of modules available n the internet, which covers almost all areas in server side application development.   NPM and Node.js Modules Node.js utilizes CommonJS as its module system. A module is a set of JavaScript files. In Node.js if we have an entry file named “index.js”, then all modules it needs will be located at the “node_modules” folder. And in the “index.js” we can import modules by specifying the module name. For example, in the code we’ve just created, we imported a module named “http”, which is a build-in module installed alone with Node.js. So that we can use the code in this “http” module. Besides the build-in modules there are many modules available at the NPM website. Thousands of developers are contributing and downloading modules at this website. Hence this is another benefit of using Node.js. There are many modules we can use, and the numbers of modules increased very fast, and also we can publish our modules to the community. When I wrote this post, there are totally 14,608 modules at NPN and about 10 thousand downloads per day. Install a module is very simple. Let’s back to our command windows and input the command “npm install express”. This command will install a module named “express”, which is a MVC framework on top of Node.js. And let’s create another JavaScript file named “helloweb.js” and copy the code below in it. I imported the “express” module. And then when the user browse the home page it will response a text. If the incoming URL matches “/Echo/:value” which the “value” is what the user specified, it will pass it back with the current date time in JSON format. And finally my website was listening at 12345 port. 1: var express = require("express"); 2: var app = express(); 3:  4: app.get("/", function(req, res) { 5: res.send("Hello Node.js and Express."); 6: }); 7:  8: app.get("/Echo/:value", function(req, res) { 9: var value = req.params.value; 10: res.json({ 11: "Value" : value, 12: "Time" : new Date() 13: }); 14: }); 15:  16: console.log("Web application opened."); 17: app.listen(12345); For more information and API about the “express”, please have a look here. Start our application from the command window by command “node helloweb.js”, and then navigate to the home page we can see the response in the browser. And if we go to, for example http://localhost:12345/Echo/Hello Shaun, we can see the JSON result. The “express” module is very populate in NPM. It makes the job simple when we need to build a MVC website. There are many modules very useful in NPM. - underscore: A utility module covers many common functionalities such as for each, map, reduce, select, etc.. - request: A very simple HTT request client. - async: Library for coordinate async operations. - wind: Library which enable us to control flow with plain JavaScript for asynchronous programming (and more) without additional pre-compiling steps.   Node.js and IIS I demonstrated how to run the Node.js application from console. Since we are in Windows another common requirement would be, “can I host Node.js in IIS?” The answer is “Yes”. Tomasz Janczuk created a project IISNode at his GitHub space we can find here. And Scott Hanselman had published a blog post introduced about it.   Summary In this post I provided a very brief introduction of Node.js, includes it official definition, architecture and how it implement the event-driven non-blocking model. And then I described how to install and run a Node.js application on windows console. I also described the Node.js module system and NPM command. At the end I referred some links about IISNode, an IIS extension that allows Node.js application runs on IIS. Node.js became a very popular server side application platform especially in this year. By leveraging its non-blocking IO model and async feature it’s very useful for us to build a highly scalable, asynchronously service. I think Node.js will be used widely in the cloud application development in the near future.   In the next post I will explain how to use SQL Server from Node.js.   Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. • Inconsistent accessibility error in xna.

    - by Tom
    Hey all, you may remember me asking a question regarding a snake game I was creating about two weeks ago. Well I'm quite far now into making the game (thanks to a brilliant tutorial I found). But I've come across the error described named above. So heres my problem; I have a SnakeFood class that has a method called "Reposition". In the game1 class I have a method called "UpdateInGame" which calls the reposition method to load an orange that spawns in a random place every second. My latest piece of code changed the reposition method to allow the snake I have on the screen to not be overlapped by the orange that randomly spawns. Now I get the error (in full): Error 1 Inconsistent accessibility: parameter type 'TheMathsSnakeGame.Snake' is less accessible than method 'TheMathsSnakeGame.SnakeFood.Reposition(TheMathsSnakeGame.Snake)' C:\Users\Tom\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\TheMathsSnakeGame\TheMathsSnakeGame\SnakeFood.cs 33 21 TheMathsSnakeGame I understand what the errors trying to tell me but having changed the accessiblity of the methods, I still can't get it to work. Sorry about the longwinded question. Thanks in advance :) Edit: Code I'm using (Game1 Class) private void UpdateInGame(GameTime gameTime) { //Calls the oranges "reposition" method every second if (gameTime.TotalGameTime.Milliseconds % 1000 == 0) orange.Reposition(sidney); sidney.Update(gameTime); } (SnakeFood Class) public void Reposition(Snake snake) { do { position = new Point(rand.Next(Grid.maxHeight), rand.Next(Grid.maxWidth)); } while (snake.IsBodyOnPoint(position)); }

  • What is the method to reset the Planar 1910m monitor?

    - by Richard J Foster
My monitor (a Planar, apparently model number PL1910M) is not working. (It is flashing a green / orange sequence which I believe to be an error code. The sequence, in case it helps consists of orange and green three times quickly followed by a longer orange, then another green followed by a long period where both colors appear to be present). I vaguely recall a co-worker suffering from a similar problem, and our IT department "resetting" the monitor by holding down a certain set of keys as they apply power. Unfortunately, I do not remember what that key sequence was, our IT department is not responding, and the Planar web site is blocked by the content filtering firewall we have in place! What is the sequence to perform the reset? (For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

  • Clean Code Development & Flexible work environment - MSCC 26.10.2013

Finally, some spare time to summarize my impressions and experiences of the recent meetup of Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community. I already posted my comment on the event and on our social media networks: Professional - It's getting better with our meetups and I really appreciated that 'seniors' and 'juniors' were present today. Despite running a little bit out of time it was really great to see more students coming to the gathering. This time we changed location for our Saturday meetup and it worked out very well. A big thank you to Ebene Accelerator, namely Mrs Poonum, for the ability to use their meeting rooms for our community get-together. Already some weeks ago I had a very pleasant conversation with her about the MSCC aims, 'mission' and how we organise things. Additionally, I think that an environment like the Ebene Accelerator is a good choice as it acts as an incubator for young developers and start-ups. Reactions from other craftsmen Before I put my thoughts about our recent meeting down, I'd like to mention and cross-link to some of the other craftsmen that were present: "MSCC meet up is a massive knowledge gaining strategies for students, future entrepreneurs, or for geeks all around. Knowledge sharing becomes a fun. For those who have not been able to made it do subscribe on our MSCC meet up group at meetup.com." -- Nitin on Learning is fun with #MSCC #Ebene Accelerator "We then talked about the IT industry in Mauritius, salary issues in various field like system administration, software development etc. We analysed the reasons why people tend to hop from one company to another. That was a fun debate." -- Ish on MSCC meetup - Gang of Geeks "Flexible Learning Environment was quite interesting since these lines struck cords : "You're not a secretary....9 to 5 shouldn't suit you"....This allowed reflection...deep reflection....especially regarding the local mindset...which should be changed in a way which would promote creativity rather than choking it till death..." -- Yannick on 2nd MSCC Monthly Meet-up And others on Facebook... ;-) Visual impressions are available on our Meetup event page. More first time attendees We great pleasure I noticed that we have once again more first time visitors. A quick overlook showed that we had a majority of UoM students in first, second or last year. Some of them are already participating in the UoM Computer Club or are nominated as members of the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) programme. Personally, I really appreciate the fact that the MSCC is able to gather such a broad audience. And as I wrote initially, the MSCC is technology-agnostic; we want IT people from any segment of this business. Of course, students which are about to delve into the 'real world' of working are highly welcome, and I hope that they might get one or other glimpse of experience or advice from employees. Sticking to the schedule? No, not really... And honestly, it was a good choice to go a little bit of the beaten tracks. I mean, yes we have a 'rough' agenda of topics that we would like to talk about or having a presentation about. But we keep it 'agile'. Due to the high number of new faces, we initiated another quick round of introductions and I gave a really brief overview of the MSCC. Next, we started to reflect on the Clean Code Developer (CCD) - Red Grade which we introduced on the last meetup. Nirvan was the lucky one and he did a good job on summarizing the various abbreviations of the first level of being a CCD. Actually, more interesting, we exchanged experience about the principles and practices of Red Grade, and it was very informative to get to know that Yann actually 'interviewed' a couple of friends, other students, local guys working in IT companies as well as some IT friends from India in order to counter-check on what he learned first-hand about Clean Code. Currently, he is reading the book of Robert C. Martin on that topic and I'm looking forward to his review soon. More output generates more input What seems to be like a personal mantra is working out pretty well for me since the beginning of this year. Being more active on social media networks, writing more article on my blog, starting the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community, and contributing more to other online communities has helped me to receive more project requests, job offers and possibilities to expand my business at IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. Actually, it is not a coincidence that one of the questions new craftsmen should answer during registration asks about having a personal blog. Whether you are just curious about IT, right in the middle of your Computer Studies, or already working in software development or system administration since a while you should consider to advertise and market yourself online. Easiest way to resolve this are to have online profiles on professional social media networks like LinkedIn, Xing, Twitter, and Google+ (no Facebook should be considered for private only), and considering to have a personal blog. Why? -- Be yourself, be proud of your work, and let other people know that you're passionate about your profession. Trust me, this is going to open up opportunities you might not have dreamt about... Exchanging ideas about having a professional online presence - MSCC meetup on the 26th October 2013 Furthermore, consider to put your Curriculum Vitae online, too. There are quite a number of service providers like 1ClickCV, Stack Overflow Careers 2.0, etc. which give you the ability to have an up to date CV online. At least put it on your site, next to your personal blog. Similar to what you would be able to see on my site here. Cyber Island Mauritius - are we there? A couple of weeks ago I got a 'cold' message on LinkedIn from someone living in the U.S. asking about the circumstances and conditions of the IT world of Mauritius. He has a great business idea, venture capital and is currently looking for a team of software developers (mainly mobile - iOS) for a new startup here in Mauritius. Since then we exchanged quite some details through private messages and Skype conversations, and I suggested that it might be a good chance to join our meetup through a conference call and see for yourself about potential candidates. During approximately 30 to 40 minutes the brief idea of the new startup was presented - very promising state-of-the-art technology aspects and integration of various public APIs -, and we had a good Q&A session about it. Also thanks to the excellent bandwidth provided by the Ebene Accelerator the video conference between three parties went absolutely well. Clean Code Developer - Orange Grade Hahaha - nice one... Being at the Orange Tower at Ebene and then talking about an Orange Grade as CCD. Well, once again I provided an overview of the principles and practices in that rank of Clean Code, and similar to our last meetup we discussed on the various aspect of each principle, whether someone already got in touch with it during studies or work, and how it could affect their future view on their source code. Following are the principles and practices of Clean Code Developer - Orange Grade: CCD Orange Grade - Principles Single Level of Abstraction (SLA) Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) Separation of Concerns (SoC) Source Code conventions CCD Orange Grade - Practices Issue Tracking Automated Integration Tests Reading, Reading, Reading Reviews Especially the part on reading technical books got some extra attention. We quickly gathered our views on that and came up with a result that ranges between Zero (0) and up to Fifteen (15) book titles per year. Personally, I'm keeping my progress between Six (6) and Eight (8) titles per year, but at least One (1) per quarter of a year. Which is also connected to the fact that I'm participating in the O'Reilly Reader Review Program and have a another benefit to get access to free books only by writing and publishing a review afterwards. We also had a good exchange on the extended topic of 'Reviews' - which to my opinion is abnormal difficult here in Mauritius for various reasons. As far as I can tell from my experience working with Mauritian software developers, either as colleagues, employees or during consulting services there are unfortunately two dominant pattern on that topic: Keeping quiet Running away Honestly, I have no evidence about why these are the two 'solutions' on reviews but that's the situation that I had to face over the last couple of years. Sitting together and talking about problematic issues, tackling down root causes of de-motivational activities and working on general improvements doesn't seem to have a ground within the IT world of Mauritius. Are you a typist or a creative software craftsman? - MSCC meetup on the 26th October 2013 One very good example that we talked about was the fact of 'job hoppers' as you can easily observe it on someone's CV - those people change job every single year; for no obvious reason! Frankly speaking, I wouldn't even consider an IT person like to for an interview. As a company you're investing money and effort into the abilities of your employees. Hiring someone that won't stay for a longer period is out of question. And sorry to say, these kind of IT guys smell fishy about their capabilities and more likely to cause problems than actually produce productive results. One of the reasons why there is a probation period on an employment contract is to give you the liberty to leave as early as possible in case that you don't like your new position. Don't fool yourself or waste other people's time and money by hanging around a full year only to snatch off the bonus payment... Future outlook: Developer's Conference Even though it is not official yet I already mentioned it several times during our weekly Code & Coffee sessions. The MSCC is looking forward to be able to organise or to contribute to an upcoming IT event. Currently, the rough schedule is set for April 2014 but this mainly depends on availability of location(s), a decent time frame for preparations, and the underlying procedures with public bodies to have it approved and so on. As soon as the information about date and location has been fixed there will be a 'Call for Papers' period in order to attract local IT enthusiasts to apply for a session slot and talk about their field of work and their passion in IT. More to come for sure... My resume of the day It was a great gathering and I am very pleased about the fact that we had another 15 craftsmen (plus 2 businessmen on conference call plus 2 young apprentices) in the same room, talking about IT related topics and sharing their experience as employees and students. Personally, I really appreciated the feedback from the students about their current view on their future career, and I really hope that some of them are going to pursue their dreams. Start promoting yourself and it will happen... Looking forward to your blogs! And last but not least our numbers on Meetup and Facebook have been increased as a direct consequence of this meetup. Please, spread the word about the MSCC and get your friends and colleagues to join our official site. The higher the number of craftsmen we have the better chances we have t achieve something great! Thanks!

  • Enum types, FlagAttribute & Zero value

    - by nmgomes
We all know about Enums types and use them every single day. What is not that often used is to decorate the Enum type with the FlagsAttribute. When an Enum type has the FlagsAttribute we can assign multiple values to it and thus combine multiple information into a single enum. The enum values should be a power of two so that a bit set is achieved. Here is a typical Enum type: public enum OperationMode { /// <summary> /// No operation mode /// </summary> None = 0, /// <summary> /// Standard operation mode /// </summary> Standard = 1, /// <summary> /// Accept bubble requests mode /// </summary> Parent = 2 } In such scenario no values combination are possible. In the following scenario a default operation mode exists and combination is used: [Flags] public enum OperationMode { /// <summary> /// Asynchronous operation mode /// </summary> Async = 0, /// <summary> /// Synchronous operation mode /// </summary> Sync = 1, /// <summary> /// Accept bubble requests mode /// </summary> Parent = 2 } Now, it’s possible to do statements like: [DefaultValue(OperationMode.Async)] [TypeConverter(typeof(EnumConverter))] public OperationMode Mode { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets a value indicating whether this instance supports request from childrens. /// </summary> public bool IsParent { get { return (this.Mode & OperationMode.Parent) == OperationMode.Parent; } } or switch (this.Mode) { case OperationMode.Sync | OperationMode.Parent: Console.WriteLine("Sync,Parent"); break;[…]  But there is something that you should never forget: Zero is the absorber element for the bitwise AND operation. So, checking for OperationMode.Async (the Zero value) mode just like the OperationMode.Parent mode makes no sense since it will always be true: (this.Mode & 0x0) == 0x0 Instead, inverse logic should be used: OperationMode.Async = !OperationMode.Sync public bool IsAsync { get { return (this.Mode & ContentManagerOperationMode.Sync) != ContentManagerOperationMode.Sync; } } or public bool IsAsync { get { return (int)this.Mode == 0; } } Final Note: Benefits Allow multiple values combination The above samples snippets were taken from an ASP.NET control and enabled the following markup usage: <my:Control runat="server" Mode="Sync,Parent"> Drawback Zero value is the absorber element for the bitwise AND operation Be very carefully when evaluating the Zero value, either evaluate the enum value as an integer or use inverse logic.

(For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

  • Disable new window taskbar blinking

    - by muntoo
You know that annoying orange taskbar blinking? I use Pidgin (among other programs), and I hate it when my taskbar appears with the orange blinking when I am in the middle of something. My taskbar is on auto-hide and set up to the left side of the screen. I cannot click the window I am working to make it overlap the taskbar. (I could disable "Keep taskbar on top of other windows", but it completely hides the taskbar then.) Ideal scenario: Orange light blinks, and I click somewhere (i.e. my maximized window) to hide the taskbar again.

  • Relationship between "Task Parallel Library" and "Task-based Asynchronous Pattern"?

    - by Sid
In the context of C#, .NET 4/4.5 used for an application running on a web-server, what is the relationship between "Task Parallel Library" and "Task-based Asynchronous Pattern"? I understand one is a library and the other is a pattern. But to dig deeper, is it like "The library is used by the pattern to enforce good practices". I'm also not clear if both are supported in .NET 4.0 (with awake and async keywords) Edit: Seems that awake and async are only in .NET 4.5 ...

  • Parse.com REST API in Java (NOT Android)

    - by Orange Peel
I am trying to use the Parse.com REST API in Java. I have gone through the 4 solutions given here https://parse.com/docs/api_libraries and have selected Parse4J. After importing the source into Netbeans, along with importing the following libraries: org.slf4j:slf4j-api:jar:1.6.1 org.apache.httpcomponents:httpclient:jar:4.3.2 org.apache.httpcomponents:httpcore:jar:4.3.1 org.json:json:jar:20131018 commons-codec:commons-codec:jar:1.9 junit:junit:jar:4.11 ch.qos.logback:logback-classic:jar:0.9.28 ch.qos.logback:logback-core:jar:0.9.28 I ran the example code from https://github.com/thiagolocatelli/parse4j Parse.initialize(APP_ID, APP_REST_API_ID); // I replaced these with mine ParseObject gameScore = new ParseObject("GameScore"); gameScore.put("score", 1337); gameScore.put("playerName", "Sean Plott"); gameScore.put("cheatMode", false); gameScore.save(); And I got that it was missing org.apache.commons.logging, so I downloaded that and imported it. Then I ran the code again and got Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.slf4j.spi.LocationAwareLogger.log(Lorg/slf4j/Marker;Ljava/lang/String;ILjava/lang/String;Ljava/lang/Throwable;)V at org.apache.commons.logging.impl.SLF4JLocationAwareLog.debug(SLF4JLocationAwareLog.java:120) at org.apache.http.client.protocol.RequestAddCookies.process(RequestAddCookies.java:122) at org.apache.http.protocol.ImmutableHttpProcessor.process(ImmutableHttpProcessor.java:131) at org.apache.http.impl.execchain.ProtocolExec.execute(ProtocolExec.java:193) at org.apache.http.impl.execchain.RetryExec.execute(RetryExec.java:85) at org.apache.http.impl.execchain.RedirectExec.execute(RedirectExec.java:108) at org.apache.http.impl.client.InternalHttpClient.doExecute(InternalHttpClient.java:186) at org.apache.http.impl.client.CloseableHttpClient.execute(CloseableHttpClient.java:82) at org.apache.http.impl.client.CloseableHttpClient.execute(CloseableHttpClient.java:106) at org.apache.http.impl.client.CloseableHttpClient.execute(CloseableHttpClient.java:57) at org.parse4j.command.ParseCommand.perform(ParseCommand.java:44) at org.parse4j.ParseObject.save(ParseObject.java:450) I could probably fix this with another import, but I suppose then something else would pop up. I tried the other libraries with similar results, missing a bunch of libraries. Has anyone actually used REST API successfully in Java? If so, I would be grateful if you shared which library/s you used and anything else required to get it going successfully. I am using Netbeans. Thanks.

  • Use a named custom column in SQL 2005 in WHERE clause?

    - by Orange Kid
Can I name a custom column in the SELECT statement and reference that in the WHERE clause without duplicating code? For example; SELECT RIGHT(REPLICATE('0', 5) + RTRIM(SOME_ID)), 5) AS DISPLAY_ID FROM dbo.MY_TABLE WHERE DISPLAY_ID LIKE '%005%' Only much more complicated. I want to maintain this code in one place only but SQL Server 2005 forces me to duplicate the custom SELECT in the WHERE clause. I believe this was possible in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 but no longer in 2005. Thanks.

  • Blockquote border on tumblr theme

    - by orange
This is the code for the link block: {block:Link} <div class="post link"> <h2> <a href="{URL}" class="name">{Name}</a></h2> <div class="content"> {block:Description}{Description}{/block:Description} <span class="date"> <a href="{Permalink}">{ShortMonth} {DayOfMonth}, {Year} </a> </span> </div> </div> {/block:Link} What I'm trying to do is add a border-left of of 10px to block quotes. When I try to add this style to block quotes this happens: The block quote border flows into the post title and I don't wish for this to happen, I want the border layout to stay within the content div. I'm using this CSS at the moment: div div div blockquote { border-left: 10px solid red; } Thanks in advance for the help! Just to clarify <div class="post link"> is in another div. • Reloading an external element (via jQuery's .load) without impact on same-named host elements on sam

    - by Martin Pescador
Hello together! [First, I'm an absolute beginner. I tried to express myself as good as I could - please correct me on any issue... Now: I have the following problem:] I am loading a div element, which class always is ".gallery" from a couple of pages (in this example "the page index.php?page=orange") into another page's div (in this case with the ID "orange") using the following code: $("#orange").load("http://example.com/index.php?page=orange .gallery"); Each div.gallery I load in, is a set of a few images. Between them, you can switch (there are "previous"- and "next"-links in ".imgnavi"). $(".imgnavi a").live("click", function(ev) { ev.preventDefault(); ev.stopPropagation(); $(".gallery").load($(this).attr("href")); return false; }) What happens now: Loading the different div.gallery into the new page is no problem, but as soon as I start to navigate inside those divs (each div is a little gallery, where you can switch between images), the div.gallery I am switching in is suddenly loaded into EVERY other div.gallery in the document! How do I prevent that?

  • Windows Form color changing

    - by Sef
Hello, So i am attempting to make a MasterMind program as sort of exercise. Field of 40 picture boxes (line of 4, 10 rows) 6 buttons (red, green, orange, yellow, blue, purple) When i press one of these buttons (lets assume the red one) then a picture box turns red. My question is how do i iterate trough all these picture boxes? I can get it to work but only if i write : And this is offcourse no way to write this, would take me countless of lines that contain basicly the same. private void picRood_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { UpdateDisplay(); pb1.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red; } Press the red button - first picture box turns red Press the blue button - second picture box turns blue Press the orange button - third picture box turns orange And so on... Ive had a previous similar program that simulates a traffic light, there i could assign a value to each color (red 0, orange 1, green 2). Is something similar needed or how exactly do i adress all those picture boxes and make them correspond to the proper button. Best Regards.

  • Div at bottom of window and adaptable height div

    - by Rob
Is there a way to get a div to always be at the bottom of the window, and another div to change its height to fill any space that it leaves, and that div will scroll if its content is too long. (I never want the window to scroll). This is best illustrated by a picture: The green div will always put itself at the bottom of the window, and the orange div will fill the gap. When the window is smaller, like in the right hand image, the orange div will be smaller and will scroll. The green div can be toggled. Sometimes the green div will have display: none, and then the orange div will stretch to the bottom. When the green div has display: block again, it will look like the picture again. It has to work in IE6. So far I can get the green div to go to the bottom by: position: absolute; bottom: 0; But I don't know how to get the orange div to do what I want.

  • MySQL LIMIT 1 but query 15 rows?

    - by Ian
Basically what I'm trying to do is compare the ID's of rows against 15 results in MySQL, eliminating all but 1 (using NOT IN) and then pull that result. Now normally this would be fine by itself, however the order of the 15 rows I'm doing the SQL query for are constantly changing based on a ranking, so there is a possibility that between the time the ranking updates, and the ajax request (which I submit the ID's for NOT IN) more than just one ID has changed, which would of course bring back more than one row which I do not want. So in short, is there a way in which I can query 15 rows, but only return one? Without having to run two separate queries. Any help is appreciated, thank you. EXAMPLE: Say I have 7 items in my database, and I'm displaying 5 on the page to the user. These are what are being displayed to the user: Apple Orange Kiwi Banana Grape But in the database I also have Peach Blackberry Now what I want to do is if the user deletes an item from their list, it will add another item (based on a ranking they have) Now the issue is, in order to know what they have on their list at the moment I send the remaining items to the database (say they deleted Kiwi, I would send Apple, Orange, Banana, and Grape) So now I select the highest ranked 5 items from are remaining six items, make sure they are not the ones already displayed on the page, and then add the new one to list (either Peach or Blackberry) All good and well, except that if both peach and blackberry now outrank grape, then I will be returning two results instead of just one. Because it would've searched... Apple Orange Banana Peach Blackberry and excluded... Apple Orange Banana Grape Which leaves us with both Peach and Blackberry, instead of just Peach or Blackberry

  • C# Combining lines

    - by Mike
Hey everybody, this is what I have going on. I have two text files. Umm lets call one A.txt and B.txt. A.txt is a config file that contains a bunch of folder names, only 1 listing per folder. B.txt is a directory listing that contains folders names and sizes. But B contains a bunch of listing not just 1 entry. What I need is if B, contains A. Take all lines in B that contain A and write it out as A|B|B|B ect.... So example: A.txt: Apple Orange Pear XBSj HEROE B.txt: Apple|3123123 Apple|3434 Orange|99999999 Orange|1234544 Pear|11 Pear|12 XBSJ|43949 XBSJ|43933 Result.txt: Apple|3123123|3434 Orange|99999999|1234544 Pear|11|12 XBSJ|43949|43933 This is what I had but it's not really doing what I needed. string[] combineconfig = File.ReadAllLines(@"C:\a.txt"); foreach (string ccline in combineconfig) { string[] readlines = File.ReadAllLines(@"C:\b.txt"); if (readlines.Contains(ccline)) { foreach (string rdlines in readlines) { string[] pslines = rdlines.Split('|'); File.AppendAllText(@"C:\result.txt", ccline + '|' + pslines[0]); } } I know realize it's not going to find the first "if" because it reads the entire line and cant find it. But i still believe my output file will not contain what I need.

  • suddenly cannot mount nfs share from Windows 7

    - by bing
I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to Ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from Windows 7, mounting from Mac OSX works fine. In Windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does Ubuntu need some special magic to allow Windows 7 to mount an nfs share? This is my exports file /home/Bing/ 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN2 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN3 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check)
