• Windows Task Scheduler broken: "service is not available"

  Problem I'm trying to run Windows Task Scheduler from the start menu (the command is %SystemRoot%\system32\taskschd.msc /s) but as of very recently, I'm getting an error: ![Task Scheduler service is not available. Verify that the service is running.][1] I made some screenshots but I can't embed them unfortunately because I don't have enough reputation points yet: http://i.imgur.com/7rPXf.png and Mmddy.png and wonnF.png The window then opens as usual except no tasks are displayed and the error "Reading Data Failed" is shown on a few of the panels. ![second screenshot][2] Possible Causes ran rpccfg -a 1 and netsh rpc add 127.0.0.1 changed PC name twice while computer was still loading installed and used DeltaCopy installed Adobe AIR installed Warsow I can't think of any other system changes I've made. Things Tried ran rpccfg with the parameter to reset to defaults ran netsh with the parameter to reset to defaults uninstalled DeltaCopy forced the service to restart. The service and its dependencies appear started and looked normal before and after connecting to "another computer" from inside the program and entering credentials for the current machine. This said access denied yesterday but today it says "Connecting as another user is only supported when connecting to a computer running Windows Vista™ or later." and partially works but doesn't show my tasks. ![third screenshot][3] but I am on Vista! Please help!

• How to back up non-standard directories in my user profile with Windows Backup?

  I'm using Windows Backup to back up my Win7 Pro laptop. I'd like to use it to back up my complete user profile, but I only see standard profile directories (e.g. C:\Users\JohnstonJ\Documents) in the list. Non-standard ones aren't there (e.g. C:\Users\JohnstonJ\MyCustomDirectory). What's the best way to handle this? The only thing I can think of is to browse under the "Computer" entry and navigate directly to C:\Users\JohnstonJ and check off the entire profile (to get what's in there, and any new directories that come up). But is that going to back up the profile twice? Cause other unforeseen problems given that I checked it off by navigating through the computer, rather than picking it under the "Data Files" category? (e.g. back up temporary file garbage, files in use problems, etc. that the "Data Files" category might be handling better). Looking for solutions that other people use that are known to work well and still uses the Windows Backup software - I don't really want to fuss with 3rd-party backup software. • ubuntu: Installed php-mcrypt but it doesn't show up in phpinfo()

  A web app I'm trying to install on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS requires mcrypt, and is generating this error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function mcrypt_module_open(). I know this is the same question as this one: Installed php-mcrypt but it doesn't show up in phpinfo(), but I tried several things, none of which worked, and have additional questions. I would comment on the original thread but don't have enough reputation to do so; forgive me for the duplicate question. My versions of php and mcrypt are (both installed via apt-get): php: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 mcrypt: 5.3.2-0ubuntu Doing a php -m shows that the mcrypt module is installed. I installed mcrypt and php5-mcrypt via apt-get. Also, I'm using nginx as my web server. I have tried reinstalling mcrypt and restarting nginx, but still can't get mcrypt to show up on phpinfo() and calls to mcrypt are still broken. Here is some more info: $ php -i | grep "mcrypt" /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini, mcrypt mcrypt support => enabled mcrypt.algorithms_dir => no value => no value mcrypt.modes_dir => no value => no value I also checked that mcrypt is on in /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini and /etc/php5/cgi/conf.d/mcrypt.ini. Lastly, I'm using fastCGI with nginx. I googled around and saw suggestions to restart php5-fpm. I couldn't find php5-fpm in apt-get, I'm not sure if I still need php5-fpm since I already have fastCGI. Is there anything else I'm missing?

• AMD FX8350 CPU - CoolerMaster Silencio 650 Case - New Water Cooling System

  Lately after a use of 6 months of my AMD FX8350 CPU I'm experiencing high temperatures and loud noise coming from the CPU fan(I set that in order to keep it cooler). I decided to replace the stock fan with a water cooling system in order to keep my CPU quite and cool and add one or two more case fans too. Here is my case's airflow diagram: http://www.coolermaster.com/microsite/silencio_650/Airflow.html My configuration now is: 2x120mm intake front(stock with case) 1x120mm exhaust rear(stock with case) 1 CPU stock I'm planning to buy Corsair Hydro Series H100i(www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h100i-extreme-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler) and place the radiator in the front of my case(intake) and add an 120mm bottom intake and/or an 140mm top exhaust fan. My CPU lies near the top of the MO. Is it a good practice to have a water-cooling system that takes air in? As you can see here the front of the case is made of aluminum. Can the fresh air go in? Does it even fit? If not, is it wiser to get Corsair Hydro Series H80i (www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h80i-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler) and place the radiator on top of my case(exhaust) and keep the front 2x120mm stock and add one more as intake on bottom. If you have any other idea let me know. Thank you. EDIT: The CPU fan running ~3000rpm and temp is around 40~43C on idle and save energy. When temp is going over 55C when running multiple programs and servers on localhost(tomcat, wamp) rpm is around 5500 and loud! I'm running Win8.1 CPU not overclocked PS: Due to my reputation i couldn't post the links that was necessary. I will edit ASAP.

• RAID 5 Install on Ubuntu Server 12.04 [closed]

  Environment: Ubuntu Server 12.04, installing from bootable flash drive Error: No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. I'm trying to set up a personal file server with software RAID 5. I just got three hard drives for this, but haven't found any solid documentation. I'm unsure what the basic way to partition my hard drives is. Can someone upload a screenshot of their "partition disks" screen so that I can compare with mine (attached)? Should I set the bootable flag? Do I need a /home partition? A /boot partition? Should I "Use [my partition] as: Ext4 journaling file system"? Or make that field "physical volume for RAID"? I am an engineer, but I have only a cursory knowledge of all-things-linux. • How to recover a Linksys WRT54GL router that has a blinking green power LED and no response from the

  I was flashing the router with the Tomato firmware, but something went wrong; I'm not sure what. Now, the router responds to ping at 192.168.1.1 (my Mac's on a static IP 192.168.1.21), but the web-interface doesn't come up. I have read that this situation is recoverable in a [couple of places][2], but I haven't been having much success and so I wondered whether anyone could help. From my Mac (OSX 10.5) I have tried to tftp a new vanilla-Linksys firmware to the router and reboot; according to the trace, this sends it but the router behaves no differently after a reboot. I've read that if boot_wait is turned on, I'll have an easier time, but I haven't been able to find any instructions that tell me how I can tell whether I did this or not (I don't think I have, but I might have, when I tinkered the first time months ago - the router has worked since then, though). I have found a couple of references to [something called JTAG][3], which seems like some kind of [homebrew diagnostic cable thing][4], but that's a little beyond my ken. Happy to try it, with muppet-level instructions, though (I do software, not hardware!). So, I'm at a bit of a loss, really, and wondered whether anyone could provide me with the route (ha. ha.) out of this mess? Hm, I can't post all the links I wanted to until I have some more reputation.

• how to authenticate once for multiple servers, using only apache configs?

  My problem is, I have a number of prepackaged web apps (a print system, a wiki, a bug tracker, an email archive, etc.) running on different Mac OS X Leopard (soon to be SL) servers that each need to authenticate users from the internet at large. Right now every server presents an Apache basic authentication prompt, which takes a shared login, but it's apparently enough of an inconvenience to log in repeatedly that people are sending email without checking the wiki or bug tracker or archive. In the case of the bug tracker, a user [might need to log in twice---once for apache if he hasn't used any other protected service on that server, once for the bug tracker itself so it can distinguish different people. Since the only common component to all these apps is Apache 2 itself, does it have any way of authenticating a user once, in some way that will be respected by other servers and various web apps? Looked at http://serverfault.com/questions/32421/how-is-session-stickiness-achieved-across-multiple-web-servers but it sounds like the answer is assuming that I get to write my own web app. Looked at Ian Bicking's blog but it's four years old and recommends something available only for apache 1.3, not apache 2. Sorry not to hyperlink the second site---apparently I need 10 reputation points. Edit: Shibboleth does what I need, but I should have specified that I'm looking for a really dumb, really simple solution for in-house services that need to handle all of a dozen users, probably not more than three at a time.

  Ok this is somenthing unbelievable, we have a website, users sign up and receives links to confirm they signed up BUT: 1 - microsoft blocked our IP (no one with microsoft email account can receive our emails) 2 - we tryed contacting microsoft submitting the detailed form about our problem 3 - we posted 3 times in their community about our problem 4 - we tweeted they about our problem 5 - we tryed finding out some telephone support number (the few there are arent' helping at all) Do you think we solved? the answer is NO :/ We still unable to send emails from our IP to microsoft email accounts, since 3 months back. Our emails are perfect we checked all the email headers following microsoft guidelines but it seems not enought, checking our IP reputation it seems everythings ok, indeed we can send email easly to any other provider , gmail, yahoo, etc Do you know any other way to try to get help ? • hard drive recognized by bios but not by windows

  I'm adding a new hard drive (A seagate ST31000340NS; I had links in here but I don't have enough reputation to post them. Interestingly, the bios recognizes it as a ST31000340AS, but it was bought as the other number...) to a friend's hp pavilion d4650e (mobo specs; google the model if you want the rest of the info, can't do more than one link.). Have had a hell of a time with it. Finally figured out that the hard drive needed a jumper set to limit the speed to 1.5gbps so the mobo would recognize it, and the bios DOES recognize it now. But not windows (using windows 7), using add new hardware or diskmgmt.msc. According to my friend, who was at the computer when it first booted after adding the jumper, a new hardware found dealio popped up saying something about raid, but I can't provide more info then that since I didn't see it. Ubuntu livecd recognized the drive before we changed the jumper. Haven't checked since then. XP didn't recognize it, that's the OS we started with. Upgraded to 7 hoping it might fix the problem. The only other info I can think of that might be immediately relevant is that the drive is plugged into the fifth sata channel, and the first channel is empty. Is this a problem? I assume not, because the two other drives (in a raid 0) and the cd and dvd drives are also on channels past the first one, and are recognized. Ask questions and I'll update with info!

  I want to install the latest version of Git using yum and the RPM repository on kernel.org, but adding the repo to yum.repos.d causes yum to fail with checksum errors. The prevailing solution to this issue seems to be to simply use the repository at Webtatic as answered here on superuser. I know I can also install an older version of Git using the EPEL repo, or compile from the latest source tarball, but honestly I want to understand why I'm having issues using the kernel.org repo. • Can I still restore partition table?

  Once I was going to resize partitions on my Mac HD from Bootcamp. I changed my mind and was going to quit, but apparently I hit a button, which made every single mac partion dissapear, and windows 7 refused to restart and be reinstalled. The 1 TB large HD consists of 3 partions, I believe. Since I can't see their actual size (except bootcamp), this is how I recall it. Macintosh HD about 500GB (Somewhere around 700GB according to disk utillity, but 500 according to Finder, and 500GB was all I could access.) Lion Recovery disk Bootcamp 293.36 GB To fix this I connected my mac via target disk mode to a pc and ran TestDisk. However this is the results: Since I Don't have 10 reputation I cant post the image showing the testdisk results, so I post a link instead hoping it is ok. The two mac partitions' sizes are completely wrong, and BOOTCAMP isn't showing. I tested using disk utilities from the snow leopard dvd. There there is one 293.36 GB Mac OS Extended partition. Before I had the firewire cable for target disk mode I tried reinstalling windows. Without success I tried again formating BOOTCAMP. Was that a bad thing to do? Could it have overwritten data from Macintosh HD? Unfortunately I have no backup. I could bring it to some kind of computer repair firm though.

• Moving my OpenID from Livejournal to... something else.

  I've actually been an early user of OpenID, although there are still some questions that I've had with OpenID that I've never really had satisfactorily answered. Now, I understand that if I have full control over my domain, I can set it up so that I can delegate the task of authenticating to another OpenID service provider. The problem is, what I'd like to do is to get the Livejournal server to pass the authentication to someone else, instead of having LJ doing it. Preferably what I'd like to do is get Livejournal, when asked by a authenticating provider, say, "No, I don't do it anymore -- go to this address". The plan was that this address would then be in a domain I fully control, which then would pass it on to whichever service provider I choose. I don't even know if I've gotten my understanding of OpenID right, if all this shenanigans are necessary, if my question makes sense, or if it's even possible with a service provider like Livejournal. (tried tagging this with livejournal, and it told me I couldn't, because I don't have enough reputation. Oh well; one must start somewhere. Sorry for the inconvenience!)

• Recommend a free temperature-monitoring utility for cores + video card, on Vista?

  Looking for your recommendations for a free temperature-monitoring utility, for my PC (Core 2) and graphics card for Vista. (Question reposted with the hyperlinks now I have 10 reputation). I don't want all the geeky details, I don't overclock, I don't see the need to mess with my fan speeds or motherboard settings, I just want something fairly basic to help with basic troubleshooting of intermittent overheats on video card and/or mobo: must run on Windows Vista (yes, don't laugh). ideally displays temperature when minimized to toolbar, and/or: automatically alerts me when temperature on either core or the video card exceeds a threshold ideally measures temperature of video card and system as well, not just the cores. HDD temperature is not necessary I think. logging is nice, graphs are also nice portability to Linux and Mac is nice Apparently Everest is the best paid option, but I'm not prepared to spend $40. I found the following free options, but no head-to-head at-a-glance comparison: CoreTemp (only does cores, not video card?) Open Hardware Monitor (nice graphs, displays when minimized to toolbar, no alerts) RealTemp (has alerts, works minimized, lightweight install) HWMonitor (no alerts, CNET: "[free version is] simple but effective") from CPUID CPUCool (not free: 21-day trialware, then $18) SpeedFan from Almico (too geeky, detail overload; CNET: "most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides") Motherboard Monitor (CNET: not recommended, requires expert knowledge of your mobo, dangerous) Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (only does cores, not video card? has logging) Useful discussions I found: hardwarecanucks.com , superuser.com 1, 2 , forums.techarena.in (Update: I downloaded Real Temp 3.60 and it meets all my needs, the customizable alert temperature is great. Open Hardware Monitor seems to be the other one that mostly meets my needs, except no alerts; but it is portable. I tried SpeedFan but the interface is very cluttered, too much unnecessary detail (needs a Basic/Advanced mode and a revamp of the interface.) The answer to my underlying issue is nVidia Geforce LE 7500 video card which runs very hot.)

• Number of routers in small community lock up and require reboot.

  I live in a small town which has one primary ISP. Lately I have noticed that a number of wireless routers have been locking up and requiring a reboot before allowing any connections. This has affected two of my routers, my work router, and a few others. In all cases wired continued to function as usual. Often wireless clients can see the SSID but simply won't connect. I can only think of a few possibilities and was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction: Our ISP is well known to be flaky, something they are doing is causing this, what that might be I have no clue it as seems to affect the wireless only. There's a power issue in town, given our remote location and reputation for crap electrical, this seems reasonable. Only one router was plugged in to a UPS, and I'm not sure of the quality. There is some bug in all the different firmware for every one of these routers (all different). That doesn't seem reasonable, unless; it's an unknown (or known) exploit or DoS of some sort being launched by a massive team of ninjas hell bent on forcing us all to be tethered to our walls by ethernet cables or; it's just been a coincidence and I'm just paranoid (this has some weight, I mean read 4 again). Anyone else experience similar issues and have some tips?

• For Windows XP: How to uninstall Broadcom Bluetooth software that won't disappear

  Hello, my situation is similar to this question for Windows 7, except my OS is Windows XP SP3. I have recently realized I made the mistake of buying a Bluetooth adapter and installing the Broadcom/Widcomm Bluetooth stack driver software. Now that I know that the software is no good, I want to install it (so I can install the Toshiba stack for the Cirago adapter). I've attempted to uninstall all Bluetooth driver software in Device Manager, and I don't see any remnants of any Bluetooth drivers there.   I have an issue where a directory is shown as a file when accessing a samba share ( on Ubuntu 12.10 ) from a Windows machine. If I type the full path in explorer, the directory listing works excellently, except for any subdirectories that are then shown as files. Any attack vector for this issue would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if I have provided insufficient details. Edit: The same share when accessed from a OS X, works perfectly listing the directories as directories. Best Regards!

• How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • Is my "Generic" USB Flash Drive broken?

  So here is the situation. I find myself technological knowledgeable about many things ( I love to code, whether it's websites, C#, C++ or so on). However: My 2 toddlers (my wife actually) bought me a "Generic" 128 GB USB Storage Device (Usb Flash Drive) for Father's Day. I thought awesome at first..... WRONG! Nothing but problems with it. 3-4mb/s MAX transfer speed. I can bear with it. BUT! When I went to reformat my computer I transferred my save files from my games over to the stick and then the USB Stick managed to become corrupted. Not just a simple format would work either. It's screwed. I tried to use (Manually changed usb drive letter troubleshooting it to X) "chmod X: /X /F /R" with administrator rights, I did this after a long session to make it work with no errors (had to delete the log) and I finally recovered the files, however when I go to use it (transfer to or from) it transfers a couple kb to the stick or from it and then freezes, It says (Windows 7): Name: From: Folder (X:\File\Location) To: Folder C:\Users\Username\Desktop) Items Remaining: 0 (0 bytes) Speed: 0 bytes/second It does this forever... and ever... and ever... It transfered 3 files atleast, and then stopped. This is a new USB Stick bought from a "High" reputation company on eBay. Is the USB Stick screwed?

I"m adding a UITextView to a UIAlertView with the following code: UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Enter Name Here" message:@"this gets covered!" delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:@"Dismiss" otherButtonTitles:@"OK!", nil]; UITextField *myTextField = [[UITextField alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(12, 45, 260, 25)]; CGAffineTransform myTransform = CGAffineTransformMakeTranslation(0, 60); [alert setTransform:myTransform]; [myTextField setBackgroundColor:[UIColor whiteColor]]; [alert addSubview:myTextField]; [alert show]; [alert release]; [myTextField release]; If I place that code in a standard action method: (IBAction)testAlertView:(id)sender { ...the above code... } Then the first time I show the UIAlertView the cut/copy/paste popup menu will show in UITextField that's been added to the UIAlertView. (For instance if I tap and hold, then "Paste" will popup after I release. The problem is after working correctly the first time, none of the cut/copy/paste buttons will show up again next time I show the UIAlertView (new instance) unless I restart the app. Does anyone know why, or how to fix this problem? Bonus information I just found out that I can get things to always work if I create an show the alert within a UIActionSheet delagate callback. For instance this always works (cut/copy/paste always shows up when in the UITextField when appropriate) (void)actionSheet:(UIActionSheet *)actionSheet clickedButtonAtIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex { ...the above code... } Any idea what might be happening in this second case that make things work? I don't want to use a UIActionSheet in my app, so I'd like to find a way to make it work from a plain old action method. Thanks, Jesse

• Implementing Autocompletion in iPhone UITextField for contacts in address book

  Hi, I would like to have a UITextField or UITextView in where as I do some input, alternatives will appear something similar to when you type an address in Mail Application, alternatives appear down and is possible tap them so get a better input user interface.(since there is no need to type the complete word or address or phone number) I do know how to fetch data from Address Book framework, also how to input text in UITextField/UITextView and its delegates but I don't know what kind of structure to use for fetching and showing data as the user do his/her input. I know basic CoreData if this matters, I hope I can get some help. UPDATE (2010/3/10): I don't have problem make a native-like GUI but I am asking about the algorithm, does any body knows what kind algorithm is best for this thing? maybe some binary tree? Or should I just fetch data from coredata everytime? Thanks Ignacio UPDATE (2010/03/28): I've been very busy these days, so I have not tried UISearchResults but it seems fine to me. BUT I wonder was there a necessity of deletion of the wining answer? I don't think is fair my reputation went down and couldn't see the winning answer. ;(
