• How "commercially savvy" should software developers be? [closed]

  I have been watching answers to many questions on this site, and have come to the conclusion that commercial pragmatism does not factor into many software development discussions. As a result, I seriously wonder at the commercial skills within the industry, specifically the ability to deliver projects on time and to a budget. I see no indication from the site that commercially successful project delivery is a serious concern, yet the industry has a reputation for poor performance in this. Rarely, if ever, does the cost of time factor into discussions. I have never seen concepts such as opportunity cost, time to market, competitive advantage or cash flow mentioned, let alone discussed in technical answers to questions. How can you answer virtually any question without understanding the commercial background on which it is asked? Even Open source projects have a need to operate efficiently and deploy their limited resources to providing the most value for effort. Typically small start-ups have cash flow issues that outweigh longevity concerns, yet they are typically still advised to build for a future they probably won’t have if they do. Is it fair to say that these problems are solely the Managers and Project managers to solve, or are we, as developers, also responsible for ensuring successful on time, within budget delivery of projects, even if those budgets do not allow use to achieve engineering excellence?

  I'd like to know what's with all those unnamed drives. I've always thought they are what they say they are (recoveries and what not), why are there so many of them? and why do they all say 100% Free (i.e. they're all empty!). If that's the case, what happened to my recovery? Info: I'm on Dell Inspiron 7520 Windows 8 Single Language (Had Kali installed on SSD a couple of days ago, now I've just deleted that and will install Kali on VM on SSD, that's drive (S:). • Hibernate doesn't work in Windows 7 64bit

  Hibernate doesn't work in Windows 7 64bit. When I try to hibernate, it just turns off computer and when I turn on it, it doesn't resume and it just starts as 'fresh' again. I updated my drivers. What is the problem? Can you give me a hand? Thank you. Come on, please help me, I really need hibernate working, 100 of my reputation will go to you. Thanks. Edit, by the way, my model is: Inspiron N5010. After I hibernate and turn on my computer, it just show Shut down didn't shut down correctly.

• Which is the best way to catch an expiring domain name? [closed]

  I know a similar question has been asked, but I really don't know what to do. There is this .com domain which is currently on redemption period and should likely be available again within a month. I was wondering which is the best way to get it at a reasonable price. I don't think it's a highly valuable domain, it shows to have very bad ranking and has 0 exact same searches according to adwords. Why it is valuable to me is very simple: I have a project responding to this name. I already own the .net domain and would love to have the .com. I discovered the domain was going to be available thanks to an email I received by a backorder site. I did some research and these guys have a bad reputation on the web. I did further research and found that more reputable (at least in theory) companies should be the likes of snapnames, pool, namejet, godaddy, etc. I am a bit suspicious using these drop cathing services: What if they shill bids? What if they make it go into auction even if I'm the only person interested? What if I raise attention and interest to the domain by backordering? I just would rather wait for it to be deleted and available again to register it manually. It is really not an interesting domain name, and I don't think anyone would care to have it. But what if the domain is already being watched by the domain industry sharks? I did a whois research and my desired domain nameserves point to domcollect.com, which appears to be an auction site. What if I decide to wait for manual registration and I miss the chance to get it? I'm willing to spend the 60/70$ fees these sites require, but not really more than that. Suggestions? Thank you very much. I'm a bit confused and undecided.

• How Do I Get To Preferences In FireFox

  I'm currently trying to get to preferences in FireFox in Linux Ubuntu. Because I don't have 10 reputation, I can't post an image (otherwise I would). All I see in the browser is the Address Bar, Downloads and Home. If I right-click (or left click) on any of these, I don't have further options (other than Home, but it only allows me to add items to the toolbar, none of which are Preferences/Options/Etc). I tried vising a website to see if more options would open; nothing. I tried right clicking on the main page and each toolbar item (listed) to see if there was another options like "Preferences" or "Options"; nothing. I tried entering "Preferences" in the address bar, thinking maybe it would open automatically; nothing. I tried right clicking on FireFox on the Linux Menu to see if I could open options without opening the program (and tried this even when the program was open); nothing.

• Crunchbang asks for URIs to get build dependencies for php5 [closed]

  I'm trying to install PHP5, by compiling it myself. I'm doing this on Crunchbang Linux, version 11. Specifically, the version using the 3.2 kernel. Crunchbang 11 is based on Debian. This is a 64-bit Virtual machine, running on a 64-bit Win7 Professional. Using Virtualbox 4.2 This is my sources.list file: http://pastebin.com/rQJNwX7c When I try to do sudo apt-get build-dep php5, I get the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list I'm not sure what's going on here. Can anyone point out what's missing in my setup? Also, since I'm under 300 reputation on serverfault, I can't add the "crunchbang" tag.

  Hello, I have been writing articles on the wordpress.com blog, now i am looking to move it to self-hosted wordpress blog but i wonder: 1) Should i move all my articles on the new blog or just put an article on my last blog that more articles will be posted on my new blog?* 2) If i move all articles on my new blog, i am not sure about how google will react to it because there are articles with good number of visitors, won't this be seo-un-friendly because i am not sure but google will re-create page reputation stuff, etc or those articles will have same popularity even if i move elsewhere?* 3) What are the implications and side-effects in moving from wordpress.com blog to self-hosted wordpress blog?* Thanks

• Rotating images + content - jQuery or MooTools?

  I've found a feature on two different websites that I'd like to include on one of my web projects, but I can't figure out how they're doing it. I think they're using either jQuery or mootools, but I'm not sure. http://www.x-plane.com/index_desktop.html I'm new here so I don't have the reputation to post the other link, but if you do a Google search for "Andrews Institute of Orthopaedics" its the top result. I'll see if I can answer a few questions to earn my keep. The thing that I like about these is that the images and text (including links) are all rotated together. I've done a few web searches related to cycle, rotate and slide but it's not coming together for me. Can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction?

• How to manipulate the default behaviour of jQuery Imageflow?

  Some of you sure know the jQuery-Plugin Imageflow on hxxp://finnrudolph.de/ImageFlow/ (sorry for that, I definitely need to gain reputation, working on it ;)) The default behaviour is that the images within the image-container (which has 100% width in this case) will be resized according to the image-container. There's an option to declare the distance between every image and it would be much better, if this value would be encreased and decreased with the window-resize-event. Everything seems to happen in a function called "moveTo" which is unfortunately also responsible for the resizing when moving to another image. I tried it since hours now but I don't come to a solution. Find the source-code here, and the mentioned function "moveTo" on line 554. Thank your very much for any help! Tim

• Creating new tags in StackOverflow [closed]

  Hi, Earlier users with more than 300 reputations or so (don't remeber exactly) had the ability to create new tags which is tagged to their Questions , so that it was easier to search for similar questions with the tags. And also the tags helped to identify the context of the Questions asked for. I had also created few new tags for the questions that i ask for. But now it seems the Stackover team without prior notice to the users or any intimation has revoked the permission for creating new tags and also has set the reputation to more that 1500 for creating new tags. Isn't this a bully act or did they feel its useless/unnecessary not required to inform all the registered users before making the changes ? thoughts....

  I wrote an app targeting a particular clientele. A software company with a reputation among my target audience is willing to negotiate a price to either license or buy it. As a newcomer to the app store, I am not sure that I will successfully market it myself. What would be appropriate terms of a sale or license and what about pricing? I am looking for answers that draw from personal experience with software, although not necessarily apps. • Procedures before checking in to source control?

  I am starting to get a reputation at work as the "guy who breaks the builds". The problem is not that I am writing dodgy code, but when it comes to checking my fixes back into source control, it all goes wrong. I am regularly doing stupid things like : forgetting to add new files accidentally checking in code for a half fixed bug along with another bug fix forgetting to save the files in VS before checking them in I need to develop some habits / tools to stop this. What do you regularly do to ensure the code you check in is correct and is what needs to go in? Edit I forgot to mention that things can get pretty chaotic in this place. I quite often have two or three things that Im working on in the same code base at any one time. When I check in I will only really want to check in one of those things.

• Integrating a C project in the iPhone SDK

  Hello, This is my first time doing this sort of project so apologies if the question is silly. I've got a question about using a C project with a project in the iPhone SDK. I've dragged and dropped the C project into the iPhone project in Xcode (so it appears in the screenshot below). sjeng.h is a file inside GameEngine.xcodeproj, but when I try to include the header file, I not only receive an error, but the file it is looking for seems to be capitalized whereas the import statement is not. (I would post a screenshot but this is my first time doing something on stack overflow and I need more reputation points.   Project Euler I have recently begun to solve some of the Project Euler riddles. I found the discussion forum in the site a bit frustrating (most of the discussions are closed and poorly-threaded), So I have decided to publish my Python solutions on launchpad for discussion. The problem is that it seems quite unethical to publish these solutions, as it would let other people gain reputation without doing the programming work, which the site deeply discourages. My Encryption problem I want to encrypt my answers so that only those who have already solved the riddles can see my code. The logical key would be the answer to the riddle, which is always numeric. In order to prevent brute-force attacks on my answers, I want to find an encryption algorithm that takes a significantly long time (few seconds) to run. Do you know any such algorithm? I would fancy a Python package, which I can attach to the code, over an external program that might have portability issues. Thanks, Adam

• Re-binding an ajaxForm after content re-loads with ajax (jQuery 1.4.2)

  I'm trying to figure out why this is a problem when using jQuery 1.4.2 and not 1.3.2.   I have Muttiple sequence alignment (clustal) file and i want to read this file and arrange sequences in a such a way that in looks more clear and precise in order. I am doing this from biopython using AlignIO object. • Job hopping etiquette

  I need to get out of a bad situation at my current work - I like the work, but they've been jerking me around with contract extensions coming at the last minute. I've been offered a job at a different company that doesn't look as interesting, but it's a chance to learn a few technologies I was interested in learning. It's "6 months contract to permanent" - does that mean that if I decide it's hopelessly boring and quit after the 6 month contract period that it won't reflect too badly on me and ruin my reputation in the town? What if I quit earlier than that? Edit I should mention that I don't think there will be one right answer, so rather than accepting one answer, I'm going to vote up the good ones.

  Possible Duplicate: Unable to post question despite having no hyperlinks I'm trying to leave a real question but I keep getting this error: We're sorry, but as a spam prevention mechanism, new users can only post a maximum of one hyperlink. Earn 10 reputation to post more hyperlinks. I have removed all the hyper links in the question but I'm still getting the error. Is there someone I can email the code to so we can figure out what the problem is? And I really didn't appreciate the smart ass comment left by whom ever close my last question.
