• Emulating CP/M under Linux

  I need to be able to run a very old piece of software -- the HI-TECH z80 C Compiler for CP/M. It has been released as freeware by HI-TECH. Alas, it only runs on CP/M. After a lot of Googling, I found a page of utilities for UZIX. One of those utilities is a script to abstract away the emulation of a CP/M machine, thus allowing you to use the compiler as you would any other UNIX program. The problem with this script is that it depends on their own CP/M emulator, which unfortunately will not compile on a modern (x64) system. My question: is there a usable CP/M emulator for Linux that could be used in a similar fashion? Specifically, I need to be able to somehow have it access files from the host system, a la DOSBox. I'm willing to rewrite a script (I don't have to re-use the UZIX one); I just need an emulator. Thanks for any help!

• What do I need to do to get IE8 to accept a self signed certificate?

  We use self signed certificates on our intranet. What do I need to do to get IE8 to accept them without showing an error message to the user? What we did for IE7 apparently isn't working. EDIT: IE7 wouldn't show any errors if I put the certificate into trusted root certification authorities. IE8 seems to show errors even with the certificate there.

• Would javascript and similar scripting languages benefit from being strongly typed?

  Just had my mind going today. I spent some time in IE debug mode, browsing the web as usual, and oh boy do I see many errors :) Most of these errors are because some value are of a different type than expected (at least as far as I interpret the error messages). What are the reasons JavaScript and similar scripting languages aren't strongly typed? Is it just to make the languages "easier" to understand and more accessable, or is the lack of a "compile-time" the real problem?

• Why catch Exceptions in Java, when you can catch Throwables?

  Hi We recently had a problem with a Java server application where the application was throwing Errors which were not caught because Error is a separate subclass of Throwable and we were only catching Exceptions. We solved the immediate problem by catching Throwables rather than Exceptions, but this got me thinking as to why you would ever want to catch Exceptions, rather than Throwables, because you would then miss the Errors. So, why would you want to catch Exceptions, when you can catch Throwables?

  What's an effective way to handle data validation, say, from a form submission? Originally I had a bunch of if statements that checked each value and collected invalid values in an array for later retrieval (and listing). // Store errors here $errors = array(); // Hypothetical check if a string is alphanumeric if (!preg_match('/^[a-z\d]+$/i', $fieldvalue)) { $errors[$fieldname] = 'Please only use letters and numbers for your street address'; } // etc... What I did next was create a class that handles various data validation scenarios and store the results in an internal array. I have made changes in the html file for the compact display of the image by defining "max-height" and "max-width". But i want to resize the image file on upload. The image file may have a maximum width of 100px and maximum height of 150px. The image proportions must be constrained. • Render as html from a remote link on Rails

  On my registration form i want to show a modal (of twitter-bootstrap) when the user has a successfull signup to tell him to check his email so i put "remote: true" on my form and render a .js.erb wich shows the modal, on my controller. BUT, in case of inputs errors i need to render the page as html to refresh de form showing those errors. Can I call the controller from the remote form as JS but render as html?   Is there anything like this: TEST DELETE FROM user WHERE somekey = 45; That can return any errors, for example that somekey doesn't exist, or some constraint violation or anything, and reporting how many rows would be affected, but not executing the query? I know you can easily turn any query in a select query that has no write or delete effect in any row, but that can lead to errors and it's not very practical if you want to test and debug many queries.
