• "cannot receive new filesystem stream: invalid backup stream" error when unpacking flash archive on solaris 10

  I've searched around but i'm having no luck with some peculiar behavior with a flash archive. I'm using HP Server Automation 9.14 to deploy the OS. I'm creating a Solaris 10 flash archive to create a snapshot default build in our environment. I create the flash archive with # flar create -c -S -n g8-solaris10-u10 g8-solaris10-u10.flar It seems to create the file without any problems (exit status 0). When deploying to a new system (same hardware), it extracts to a point and then bails. The last error in the log I can see is Extracted 2047.00 MB ( 82% of 2488.98 MB archive) ERROR: Could not read file (172.27.118.100:/media/opsware/sunos/flar/g8-solaris10-u10.flar ERROR: Errors occurred during the extraction of flash archive. The file /tmp/flash_errors contains the list of errors encountered ERROR: Could not extract Flash archive ERROR: Flash installation failed The error log contained the following message cannot receive new filesystem stream: invalid backup stream A previous version of this flash archive (1.8gb) worked ok, so I suspect size may be a factor. The source system (the one the flash archive is an image of) is an HP BL460C GEN8 some more info below. • Installing ImageMagick on Mac OSX 10.6

  I just got a new Mac and am trying to setup a local Perl development environment. I'm using MAMP but also need the ImageMagick perl module installed in order to do some of the photo processing our scripts require. I tried installing ImageMagick manually but ran into some issues and after reading online a lot of people reported having issues going this route. The general consensus was to install it using MacPorts instead so I went ahead and installed MacPorts. Unfortunately, MacPorts can't seem to install it successfully either. • PHP & MySQL on Mac OS X: Access denied for GUI user

  Hey! This question was first posted to Stack Overflow, but as it is perhaps just as much a server issue I though it might be just as well to post it here also. I have just installed and configured Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin on my Macbook in order to have a local development environment. But after I moved one of my projects over to the local server I get a weird MySQL error from one of my calls to mysql_query(): Access denied for user '_securityagent'@'localhost' (using password: NO) First of all, the query I'm sending to MySQL is all valid, and I've even testet it through phpMyAdmin with perfect result. Secondly, the error message only happens here while I have at least 4 other mysql connections and queries per page. This call to mysql_query() happens at the end of a really long function that handles data for newly created or modified articles. This basically what it does: Collect all the data from article form (title, content, dates, etc..) Validate collected data Connect to database Dynamically build SQL query based on validated article data Send query to database before closing the connection Pretty basic, I know. I did not recognize the username "_securityagent" so after a quick search I came across this from and article at Apple's Developer Connection talking about some random bug: Mac OS X's security infrastructure gets around this problem by running its GUI code as a special user, "_securityagent". Then I tried put a var_dump() on all variables used in the mysql_connect() call, and every time it returns the correct values (where username is not "_securityagent" of course). Thus I'm wondering if anyone has any idea why 'securityagent' is trying to connect to my database - and how I can keep this error from occurring when I call mysql_query(). Update: Here is the exact code I'm using to connect to the database. • Macbook Pro Triple Boot OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Windows 8

  MacBook Pro (Summer 2010 Model, Basic Model) I currently have OS X Lion and Windows 7 running side by side on my MacBook Pro. However I have a need to get Windows 8 running as well in this mix (a Virtual Machine is not good enough, I need the performance). I have created a suitably sized parition (80GB) that is recognizable in Boot Camp. However every time I try to boot from the USB stick (that worked to install Windows 8 on my PC) using the latest version of rEFIt, it just boots Windows 7 and not the Windows 8 installer. I cannot start the installation within Windows 7 as it will just install over Windows 7. I'm guessing the Boot Camp emulation is doing something werid to stop the "Press any key to install Windows..." message from appearing (which should happen if the installer detects Windows is already installed (e.g. if you left your install disk in). Is there a way to get around this / force the installer to start? (Note I cannot start the Windows 7 installer either if I wanted to install a second copy of Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8)

• ssh timeout issue connecting to an EC2 instance on OS X

  I am new to AWS and not a networking expert but curious to know more about it. I created a VPC with a public subnet only. Then i created an EC2 instance using an Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit pv AMI image (ami-e84d8480) as well generating the key pair needed to connect to it through ssh. I followed amazon's instructions to connect to an EC2 instance via ssh which did not work. Tried different usernames other than ubuntu, like ec2-user and root. Initially set an inbound ssh rule in the security group to connect to only my ip address. When that did not work, i changed it to allow any ip to connect. But those actions did not fix the problem. Here are my guesses as to what i am missing in getting the EC2 instance connection to work. My etc/ssh_config file may be preventing the connection from taking place. I may have missed an important networking detail when setting up the VPC. I do not have a public ip address specified for the instance. I am connecting through the private ip address. My questions for the community: Am i going about it the wrong way connecting to the instance through the private ip address? if so, do i need to specify a public ip address for it to connect or some other method?

• Configuring OS X L2TP VPN to use Certificate for IPSEC layer instead of Pre Shared Key

  I'm trying to setup a L2TP VPN on an OS X Snow Leopard Server setup, and have had success using a pre-shared key, however I would rather not rely on a simple string, and use a certificate instead. Setting this up on the server side is seemingly easy, you simply select a certificate you have generated from the list, and hit apply, however when I try to use the certificate on the client side it fails. I have exported the certificate into a P12 file, and then transferred to the client, and imported into the login keychain, however when I try to choose the certificate (from Network preferences, clicking Authentication Settings, then selecting Certificate and pressing Select) I am shown the following error: No machine certificates found Certificate authentication cannot be used because your keychain does not contain any suitable certificates. Use Keychain Access to import the certificate into your keychain. If you do not have the certificates required for authentication, contact your network administrator. Unfortunately even when I try to generate a certificate where I override the defaults, ensure the DNS name etc are set properly this doesn't change. When I select Certificate Authentication for the User Auth, and click Select the certificate for the server shows up there, but obviously this isn't where I need it to be available.

• Squid proxy in cent os often disconnected with error : tunnelConnectTimeout(): tunnelState->servers is NULL

  I am having very often internet disconnection problem with Squid proxy service. My server config; OS: CentOS release 6.3 (Final) model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz cpu MHz : 1600.000 My Local systems IP range:192.168.2.x Server IP: 192.168.2.11 Also this server is configured with lamp for development,Samba SMB file service manager and No svn currently. So i see maximum possibility is this squid proxy since this is where it stops to connect and am sure when i restart the server net started working so something wrong with this squid service only. And this server is connected with local 14 other windows machines and basically serves as a central development node. I am able to resolve it by restarting the server fully some time or sometimes by restarting the squid proxy which is totally killing our development. I have attached my cache log file here for the error info. • Painfully slow login to AD bound Mac OS X Leopard machine when off home network

  Dear all Just looking for a little help with this problem that seems to trip a lot of people up and is causing me no end of grief. I have a number of fully patched OS X Leopard machines that are bound to my AD (Server 2003). When on the home network, logging in seems swift and works as expected. When users take the machines off site, login can take 5 minutes or more. The user adds correct credentials but the desktop does not appear for a very long time. Outside the office, I have tried logging in using a local Admin account, switching off Airport and then logging in using an AD account. In this situation login is immediate again. It all seems as if Leopard is finding a suitable wireless network, spending far too long looking for the Domain before eventually giving up and using the cached credentials instead. I have read that disabling Bonjour on the machine will stop this problem (i have not yet tested) http://www.macwindows.com/leopardAD.html#111607z ...but I am reluctant to use this "Solution" as I would like to be able to use Bonjour on the local network as well as having AD-bound machines. However, is disabling Bonjour really the only answer? Is there not some time-out setting somewhere that could be amended to stop Leopard spending forever looking for home? • Mac creating files w/ wrong perms on samba share

  In my group, which is very heterogeneous in terms of machines, we use a samba share to collaborate on files and such. In all but one case, it works as expected (or at least close enough). The one exception is my boss' laptop, a snow leopard macbook air. On his desktop (also snow leopard), if he creates a file it ends up serverside with perms of 774, but when he creates it with the Air, the perms are 644. The key problem is the lack of group write permission on the laptop created files. What's really confusing is that everything that I've looked at on the two machines are identical - same version of OS X, same version of samba (3.0.25b-apple), same settings for the same software, etc. I can't imagine why one machine would be different than the other, but it is. To try to be complete w/ the description, here is the relevant portion of my smb.conf file: comment = my Share path = /path/to/share public = no writeable = yes printable = no force group = myshare directory mask = 0770 create mask = 0770 force create mode = 0770 force directory mode = 0770 EDIT: I looked at three more Macs and all of them worked as expected which leaves this one laptop the true oddball. This wasn't as good as a test as the others though, as they were all leopard.

• Apple / Mac OS X - Is there a Package Manager like Linux

  I am a Linux/UNIX user and love the package management that comes with it. For the most part, I like Ubuntu, but just like anything else, it is the minor things that you live with daily that would be nice if they just worked. My main issue is my wacom tablet while it works, every time there is an OS update, I have to rebuild the wacom driver. The other slightly annoying issue is, my ATI video card is not fully supported. When I use the HDMI out, the sound doesn't go through it, and the screen is not entirely used. I would happily get an Apple if it had a similar package management system like Ubuntu, Gentoo, or other Linux distribution. This takes the work out of getting the latest enhancements or fixes. It also takes all the guess work out about what you need to get something to work. I just want to use my computer, not administer it. Aside from Apple applications, if I wanted to install the GIMP on an apple, would it go and fetch ufraw if I wanted support for that and whatever other dependencies GIMP has? If I want Netbeans installed, will it go and get a JDK and maven if I want that? If not, is there something in the works? I know I don't update my applications that frequently, but that is mainly because I'm not aware of the updates. The updates all happen in the background. Walter

• Mount EC2 instance via SSH on Mac OS X

  OK I just can't figure this out. I have an EC2 instance, which I'm able to SSH into just fine with: ssh -i XXXX.pem [email protected] I can even make it slick from the command line by creating a ~/.ssh/config with this in it: Host XXXX HostName XXXX User ubuntu IdentityFile ~/.ec2/XXXX.pem Which allows me to simple do a ssh XXXX with no -i option. Now, I want to mount this via SSH. I've tried MacFuse/SSHFS, MacFusion and ExpandDrive, but no luck. It's supposed to "just work" but the SSH-related command line utilities and the Keychain Access program in OS X is confusing and opaque to me. From what I've read, these GUI programs don't care about .ssh/config, they care about the Keychain. Somehow I can associate my domain name I'm connecting to with a particular "identity" private key file (.pem file) but I have no idea how. I tried this: ssh-add -K XXXX.pem Which does add to the Keychain but it's not associated to a particular domain. These GUI mounting programs I mentioned all just spin and do nothing when I try to connect passwordless. No keychain prompt, no nothing. I've pretty much given up and I'm thinking about just setting up an SMB server, but I'd rather just go over SSH since I believe it's possible.

• Spreadsheet application that can handle big data OS X

  I've been working with Excel for quite a while for some statistical analysis that I do regularly. The size of the data that I'm working with has gotten much larger as of late, however. The layout of the databases in question is quite simple, usually just three rows which includes a UNIX timestamp, and EST value, a proprietary numeric value and finally an average of the rows that have a timestamp +/- 1000 that row's timestamp (little AVERAGEIFS() formula). That formula and the EST conversion are the only formulas in the sheet. I'm beginning to work with files with 500,000+ rows. Running the average formula down the entire row takes forever. The end result is the production of print-worthy graphs. I'm looking for either a UNIX CL utility or separate spreadsheet/database application that can handle this amount of data without melting my CPU or making me wait an hour. Is there anything out there? TL;DR: Simple excel sheet with over half a million rows is getting too slow to work with. OS X alternatives?

• Problem uninstalling and installing Java on new pc running Windows 7 64 bit os

  I have a new Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 64 bit os. I am attending online classes which require IE 8 and Java version 6 build 20. The pc came with IE 8 32 bit and Java 6 build 21 already installed. I tried to uninstall Java using add and remove programs but after about 45 minutes of "Preparing to remove application" I got an error refering to a missing dll file and the uninstall failed. I used a third party program to remove Java and downloaded Java 6 build 20. My problem is when I try to install it I get the box telling me "Installing program ... this may take a few minutes" however after 30 to 45 minutes nothing has happend and there is no indication in the progress bar that anything is happening then all of a sudden the program bar is full and the program is supposedly installed. When I try to run it however it doesn't work. Someone help please! I can't get access to my classwork with out this! Thanks

• Forward all traffic from one IP to another Ip on OS X

  This is related to this question I just asked... I have two IP address on my iMac I want to "bridge". I'm not sure what the proper terminology is... here's the situation. My iMac has a firewire connection to my laptop and an ethernet connection to the rest of my office. My laptop has an ip of 192.168.100.2 (on the firewire interface). My iMac has an IP of 192.168.100.1 on the firewire interface, and two IPs, 10.1.0.6 and 10.1.0.7, on it's ethernet interface. If I wanted to forward all traffic coming in from 192.168.100.2 on my OS X machine to go out on IP 10.1.0.7, and vice-versa, can this be done? I assume I would use the ipfw command. Essentially I want to "bridge" the firewire network to the ethernet network so my laptop can see all the machines on the 10.1 network, and all those machines can see my laptop at 10.1.0.7. Is this possible?

• Linux Centos 6 becomes unavailable from time to time - OS&network issue

  I am encountering following problem. There is one server (DL160 G5) running Centos 6.3 with default kernel 2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.x86_64 - at this point I'd like to add that issue appeared also at older version - 6.1 and older kernel (do not remember exactly which version). There is cPanel installed and from time to time it becomes unavailable (network connection). What I've checked is (via KVMoIP): load average is completely normal it does not lack memory or disk space when problem occurs no console notifications checked all access logs and there is no sign that it can be caused by a client script cannot even access local interface (127.0.0.1) or main IP address running tcpdump I can only see packets arriving to server - no responses all services seem to be running properly (mail,sql,http,ssh) checked crontab and all clients' crontabs too network port utilisation is low ( up to several Mbits) arriving packet rate is low - hundreds per second (according to tcpdump) console (via kvmoip) works fine, no lags there is no conntrack at this server there is no ipv6 at this server flushing iptables, unloading modules does not resolve problem restarting network does not resolve problem, no errors appear it also occurs when two sepearate networks are configured (and multiple gateways) as well as one IP, one default gw and one network is configured - so it seems network configuration independent it seems to repeat randomly (load,packet rate,bandwith usage,load independent) checked server with different rootkit detection tools - it seems to be clean server has been rebooted, it did not change anything there are no interface errors it apperas randomly can be once a week or several times per day It usually works fine after 1-15 minutes. What I can also check? It is definitely OS issue - there is traffic at interface only in one direction when problem occurs, can not even ping loopback. Any ideas? Recommended checks? Anything I did not checked above.

• Mac always boots with incorrect display gamma (for years now including Lion)

  I think somewhere, something got installed but I have no idea what or how to fix it :( Basically, my old MacBook Pro running 10.5 Leopard had a problem where on boot it would show everything on the screen in a very sort of crunched color space. Everything below 15% white would just be pure black, everything above 85% white would be pure white and all colors look to be a touch more saturated. It's garish. To fix it, I found that I could boot into almost any fullscreen 3D game. When the game launches, the colors would still be off, but when I then quite the game and return the desktop everything is normal again. I've noticed Blizzard games work most reliably for this (World of Warcraft or Starcraft2). This problem has followed me through the years. When I upgraded to an iMac I migrated everything over to it, and the issue now happens on the iMac too. I then got a new MacBook Pro for work and migrated my iMac over to that, and it has the problem too. I had thought that it was an OS bug, but upgrading to 10.6 Snow Leopard didn't fix it and neither did 10.7 Lion. Furthermore I can't find any reference on any forum or help site where anyone else has this problem. If anyone has any idea what processes or settings or apps I should look at to figure out why this is happening I should would appreciate it! It looks sort of irresponsible when I open my laptop in the office to work and then boot up Starcraft 2 full screen...

• Shrink Windows OS partition with unmovable files

  I am trying to shink Windows 7 OS partition C: but cannot shrink as much as I plan due to unmovable files. I have tried Windows own defrag tool before but it does not move files that are unmovable. Here are some ideas I have learned from previous posts, and I hope at least one of them will work and wish to know the detail how to do: Inspired by this post, which suggests backup C:, then delete C: , create a smaller partition, and then copy the backup to the smaller partition. I was wondering if anyone here can confirm that Windows 7 will still work in this way? What reliable tools can be used for backuping the system, and deleting and creating partition, and then copying back the backup in this method? I am actually trying another way suggested in this post. I have identified what unmovable file currently stop further shrinking: \ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles\00010015.wid::$DATA If I understand correctly, the file belongs to Windows Search. Can I set up somewhere in Windows system settings to temperately eliminate the file and similar ones (because there are many similar files under the same directory which I guess will also stand in the way of shrinking and unmovable by defrag)? Any other idea that might work will also be appreciated. Thanks and regards!

• MySQL InnoDB/socket issue on Mac OS X 10.6.4

  I have an ongoing issue on my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.4. Intermittently, my MySQL install will not create a socket on startup. Rebooting sometimes, but not always, solves the problem. Deleting the ib* files in /usr/local/mysql/data and then restarting sometimes, but not always, solves the problem. My error logs tell me the following: Plugin InnoDB init function returned error Plugin InnoDB registration as a STORAGE ENGINE failed Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: Address already in use Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306? Aborting It then appears to attempt to start again and generates this error 20 - 30 times: Unable to lock ./ibdata1, error 35 Check that you do not already have another mysqld process using the same InnoDB data or log files Though the socket file is not created, I can connect to my MySQL db directly over localhost. Although, this does not help me from a PHP standpoint. Any thoughts on what I can do to resolve the issue or debug further? I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.

• Accessing CIFS shares from an OS X machine incredibly slow

  This is a longshot, because this issue seems over-reported and unanswered on the internet (see references below), but it is about time this issue is permanently solved. The facts: Server: Windows Server 2008, acting as a file server Client: OS X Lion 10.7.3. Method of connecting: directly via IP through Finder: smb://192.168.1.100/share The problem: The initial connection attempt takes about a minute. After the connection is made, it takes one more minute to show the directories in Finder. After navigating to any other directory, it takes several seconds/minutes to parse the directory, seemingly based on the size of the contents. Actually, my entire Finder has this problem after connecting. When using Finder to show my desktop, it can literally take up to a minute to load. Obviously, this is not right. I have no clue how to fix this and would appreciate any help I can get. I am unsure about other relevant information I can provide, but if there is any, please let me know so I can update the post. I seem to be not the only one having this problem: Most importantly, an apple.stackexchange.com entry. Unsolved and unanswered. Several users on the Apple support forums. Users on EduGeek.

  I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware.   I've developed an app using the 3.1.3 SDK and I want to set the deployment target to OS 3.0. The app uses iPod functionality which I can't test on the Simulator so my question is: Is there somewhere I can find a list of the changes from 3.0 to 3.1.3 so I can check if anything might be broken on an OS 3.0 device? I've looked on Apple's website obviously but can't find anything. How do people normally test on old software releases?
