• How can I increase my application memory, till using the VirtualAlloc function, with the WOW64?

  I have application that runs on x86 32Win and we use 1.2Gbyte memory which allocated from the function VirtualAlloc(to prevent page faults). I really want to increase my application memory so I recompiled my project under MSDVE 2008 with wow64 (OS Exp 64Bit). I tried to allocate more than 2Gbyte and the function VirtualAlloc return error. I even tried to set the flag LARGEADDRESSWARE to on, and the result was the same! How can I increase my application memory, till using the VirtualAlloc function, with the WOW64?

• What are some good ways to do intermachine locking?

  Our server cluster consists of 20 machines, each with 10 pids of 5 threads. We'd like some way to prevent any two threads, in any pid, on any machine, from modifying the same object at the same time. Our code's written in Python and runs on Linux, if that helps narrow things down. Also, it's a pretty rare case that two such threads want to do this, so we'd prefer something that optimizes the "only one thread needs this object" case to be really fast, even if it means that the "one thread has locked this object and another one needs it" case isn't great. What are some of the best practices?

• Question about Content Delivery Networks CDN

  I've built a javascript code that my clients will be installing on their website and they will be calling a file from my server. I'm wondering if it would be better to host the javascript file on a CDN, instead of on my server? The benefits would be better response time and a much higher chance that it will always be available. However, In the future, if the CDN was acquired or went out of business I would have a number of clients linking to a file that doesn't exist. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

  I have an Outlook 2007 Add-in in VSTO 2005 SE that allows users to save e-mails into our document management system. From within our system users are able to open e-mails they have previously saved. However, when doing so I need to try and prevent them from saving them again. I am trying to figure out how to determine if the Mailitem being opened is coming from the Outlook e-mail client or from an external source. I know that normally the EntryId Property of the Mailitem is null or empty string when a Mailitem has not been previously saved in Outlook, however, it seems like when a Mailitem is being opened from within our system the EntryID is not null.

• Can you explain this odd behavior with dragging items into nested sortables?

  I have the following setup: A sortable list where one of the <li> has a table with lists in each cell. All of the lists are sortable with each other. Draggable items that can be added to any of the sortables Issue: When adding a draggable item ('drag 1', 'drag 2', 'drag 3') to one of the lists in the horizontal lists (table of lists) it duplicates the draggable when dropped. Sometimes it will create both copies in the same list or one in the item list and one in the column list. • Extra characters Extracted with XPath and Python (html)

  I have been using XPath with scrapy to extract text from html tags online, but when I do I get extra characters attached. An example is trying to extract a number, like "204" from a <td> tag and getting [u'204']. In some cases its much worse. For instance trying to extract "1 - Mathoverflow" and instead getting [u'\r\n\t\t 1 \u2013 MathOverflow\r\n\t\t ']. Is there a way to prevent this, or trim the strings so that the extra characters arent a part of the string? (using items to store the data). It looks like it has something to do with formatting, so how do I get xpath to not pick up that stuff?

  I have a 'Contact' class with two properties : firstName and lastName. When I want to display a contact's full name, here is what I do: NSString *fullName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@ %@", contact.firstName, contact.lastName]; But when the firstName and/or lastName is set to nil, I get a "(null)" in the fullName string. To prevent it, here's what I do: NSString *first = contact.firstName; if(first == nil) first = @""; NSString *last = contact.lastName; if(last == nil) last = @""; NSString *fullName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@ %@", first, last]; Does someone know a better/more concise way to do this?

• Android Canvas.DrawBitmap without blurring/AntiAliasing?

  I'm trying to make an android game using sprites, (or very pixelated characters, backgrounds etc.). I draw them on the canvas like so... matrix.preScale(xrat,yrat); canvas.drawBitmap(img, matrix, null); Where img is the Bitmap and the xrat and yrat are the scales. My problem is that when I test, the Bitmap is blurry or anti-aliased, is there a way to prevent this? The rigid-blocky art style of the game will be ruined if the blocks are blurry. Any (ANY) help appreciated!

  Hello, This is hard for me to word, but easier for me to demonstrate: I have a select option: <option <?php if($frequency[$key]=='1.10'){echo "selected";}?> value='1.10'>1 every 10 days</option> Really, $frequency[$key]=1.1; , but the above still shows up selected.   I'm using postGresSQL and my main table has about 20,000 rows. Sometimes count() methods can take ages or even timeout. Mod.manager.filter(...).count() I need to selectively override the count() method depending on what filter has been applied. Just having a cache of results would be a great gain but I'd like to be able to say: if filter query is just {'enabled'=True} then return 20,000 without touching the db. Note: I can't prevent the call to .count() as it's inside django's pagination, which always does a count.

  Can I kindly ask that we're allowed to login without the OpenID nonsense? This system is so popular that stack-overflow is the only place that I use it. If it is the policy of stack-overflow to prevent people to login, they've succeeded. I am a passive reader. For some reasons, I really don't like the idea of having one Id for all sites. To me, this system is dead in the water. Unless used within organizations I will never use it. Of course, until the government decides to reign us all in. Will you give them a hand? • Debugging a Browser Redirect Loop

  Hi all, I am using CakePHP with the Auth and ACL components. My page loads fine for non-registered users, but if I try to log in as a registered user I get an infinite redirect loop in the browser. I am sure that this is some sort of permissions problem, but the problem exists even for users who have permissions for everything. The only way to prevent this behavior is to allow '*' in my AppController's beforeFilter method. What is the best way to debug this sort of problem? Thanks!

• HTML 5 drag-drop into wysiwyg editor in Firefox

  I have a wysiwyg editor using the HTML 5 drag-drop api to allow the user to place widgets within the page they are editing. When the OnDrop event fires, I prevent the default event, and insert some html within the editor that represents the widget they inserted. I use execCommand("inserthtml", false, html) for this in Firefox. This works fine in IE, but in Firefox the html is not placed in the location where it was dropped. It always gets placed in the location where the previous selection was, which leads me to believe that cancelling the OnDrop event to override the default drop also cancels the selection change. Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks!

  I've found an issue I believe where an assembly is making a call to a .Net3.5 method in a .Net2.0 only environment. (None on the .Net service packs nor .Net 3.5 is installed) I'd like to know if there are any programs that I can run like FXCop to check an assembly for adherence to only making method calls that are available in .Net 2.0 without the 3.5 extensions that were added. I've been bitten by this before and I'd like to have a way to check assemblies so that before they are released they can be checked to prevent these kinds of issues. Please don't say require .Net 3.5 because whilst I'd like to go to this, it's just not possible at this point.

• Entity Framework: Setting EntityReference EntityKey causes exception on save

  I have a table with a ModifiedUserID field that is a foreign key to a User table. In entity framework, I'm loading the first table, but not the users table. I have the user ID of the current user, and would like to set the ModifiedUserID to that value for all entities that have been modified prior to saving. Before calling SaveChanges(), I use the ObjectStateManager to get all modified entities. Since I do not have the user object, but I do have the user ID, I set the EntityReference.EntityKey property as follows: entity.UserReference.EntityKey = New EntityKey("MyContainer.User", "UserID", DatabaseUserID) This works fine, but when I execute SaveChanges(), I receive the following error: A relationship is being added or deleted from an AssociationSet 'FK_Table1_User'. With cardinality constraints, a corresponding 'Table1' must also be added or deleted. Now, I see that setting the EntityReference.EntityKey creates a new AssociationSet entry, but how to I prevent this error?

• Timeout in LINQ to SQL inserting millions of records

  I'm inserting approximently 3 million records in a database using this solution. Eventually when the application has been inserting records for a while (my last run lasted around 4 hours), it gives a timeout with the following SqlException: "SqlExcepetion: Timeout expired. The timeoutperiod elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." What's the best way to handle this exception? Is there a way to prevent this from happening or should I catch the exception? Thanks in advance!

To temporarily fix that I set presence to available on every connection initialized. Does anyone know how to prevent going offline? (I assume if i keep sending available presence every minute or so bot wont go offline but that just seems too wasteful.) Suggestions anyone?   hi, I am using php session for a basic login without encryption for my site. I want to prevent a user from directly accessing a php page by typing the url when he/she is not signed in. But this is not happening. I am using session_start(), initializing session variables and aslo unsetting and destroying sesssion during logout. Also if I type the link in a different browser the page is getting displayed. I am not very well versed with php , only a beginner. I googled for such problem and found few alternatives as keeping all files in a seperate folder from the web root, using .htaccess etc. Can someone explain in simple terms what could be a good solution.thanks in advance.

Second one: public Order GetMyOrder(int orderId) { // do sutff } This Method should only be called by the owner of the Order. I know it's easy to implement the security for each method like: public List<Employees> GetAllEmployees() { // check if the user is in Role HR } or public Order GetMyOrder(int orderId) { // check if the order.Owner = user } What I'm looking for is some pattern/best practice to implement this kind of security in a generic way (without coding the the if then else every time) I hope you get what i mean :-) Thanks for you help.

I've been browsing around some but most of them seems kinda complicated, I really liked what I saw about Symfony, but it looks like I will have to spend like a month until I really understand how to use it, and in one month I could code the app I have in mind 5 times without a framework. But I want to use one to "standardize" my code and prevent bugs. So I was wondering if someone could share with me which php frameworks you think are easier to learn how to use. My application will use mysql, and it will have some sort of "search engine" to search data that will be populated on the database using a few "scraper scripts" (that I also wants to code using the framework).

• iPhone webapp: my ressources don't get cached

  Hello, First of all, I'd like to say I'm not using any off-line feature from HTML5. I have a web-application which runs on the iPhone. When viewing it from safari, everything works quite well. But when I launch the application from the home screen (to remove the navigation bar), it can be really slow. I checked the logs in Apache and it appears that Safari does a good work to cache the resources (css / js / images), with Apache answering "304 Not Modified" when needed. However, when the web app run as a "real" application (navigation bar hidden), those resources doesn't get cached and Apache the content has to be transferred over and over again (response code 200 Ok + content), resulting in a significantly slower page load. How can I prevent this behavior? Do I need to always run my webapp inside Safari, even when it's launched from the home screen? Thank you!

• Which workflow engine should I chose for implementing a dynamic reconfiguration of workflows?

  I want to be able to interrupt a running workflow instance, say when a new activity is about to be invoked, and extract information both about the structure of the workflow and the data in the particular instance. Then I will consult with an external system and according to its response I will possibly alter the behaviour of the workflow. The options I would like to have are addition/removal of activities and altering parameters for the activities to be invoked. I am currently struggling with the engine it's best to go with. I have looked at WWF, Apache ODE, Oracle Workflow and Active BPEL and as far as I understand they can all provide me with the options I need. I would really appreciate any recommendations on which one will be the easiest to work with for my purpose and any restrictions either of the above might have that would prevent me from reaching my goal.
