• Reasonable size for "filesystem reserved blocks" for non-OS disks?

  When creating a file system ( mkfs ...) the file system reserves 5% of the space for its own use because, according to man tune2fs: Reserving some number of filesystem blocks for use by privileged processes is done to avoid filesystem fragmentation, and to allow system daemons, such as syslogd(8), to continue to function correctly after non-privileged processes are prevented from writing to the filesystem. But with large drives 5% is quite a lot of space. I have 4x1.5 TB drives for data storage (the OS runs on a separate disk), so the default setting would reserve 300 GB, which is an order of magnitude more than the the entire OS drive. The reserved space can be tweaked, but what is a reasonable size for a data disk? Can I set it to zero, or could that lead to issues with fragmentation?

• How do we install Unity-2D and dependencies offline?

  We have installed 11.04 32-bit on an old machine that has no internet connection and with a graphics card that is not suitable for running Compiz or Unity. Still, we would like to run Unity-2D on this machine. We are aware of answers to this Question. Sadly Keryx will not run on 11.04 32-bit because of unmet dependencies. Building an offline repository is not an option because of limited storage capacity. Is there any convenient other way to find, download, install, and eventually update unity-2 and all dependencies (preferably from an OS independent download path)?

• New HDD formating on Ext4 root permission

  OK people good evening, I have this new 80Gb HDD I want to use it as a backup storage for my actual system (14.04) not a server. I formatted it with Gpart but I just can't write in it, when I search for permissions it tells me that only root users can write/create in it, log on as root user and try to change permissions, and I can't do that either. Long have I searched for an answer, looking everywhere but not to find any, is there a way to format it and use it with my user permission? Don't want it on NTFS, is there a way?, I have searched in these forums but there’s only an answer to format it in NTFS, so please. Thank you in advance.

• What web oriented language would work best with binary data?

  I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). So I wondered, what would be a better language to create such a website in? I have knowledge of PHP (and Javascript, HTML and CSS) but no experience with other things like Ruby, Perl, Python, and other web development languages.

• Configuring Dropbox on Ubuntu server

  I've got a Ubuntu server running on an old laptop. The OS is on a 4GB USB drive and I use a SATA drive attached for storage. Now I wanted to set up Dropbox on this machine. I've got it running using this guide: http://www.byteindia.com/internet/install-dropbox-on-linux/482/. But I haven't synched yet because there won't be enough room in my home dir. My /home is on my 4GB USB since I never use it and all my data is on the 2TB drive mounted in /media/. What is the best way to set this up? Dropbox doesn't support moving the folder in Linux yet. I found a script to move the folder but it seems outdated. Perhaps I can use symlinks in some clever way? Or maybe move my /home folder to my SATA drive? Thanks in advance

• Why is my content database so large?

  If your SharePoint site collection hasn't grown, but your content database has, the most likely culprit is versioning.  If a list -- or worse, a library -- has versioning enabled, the default is to keep every single one.  That means that every time someone edits and checks in a document, its storage footprint increases by the size of the document (and probably a little more).The solution?  It could be a bit painful, but you'll need to go back into each library and restrict the number of versions to keep (three is sufficient for most uses, but your needs may vary).  I suggest keeping only major versions as well, since minor versions are really just stopping points on the way to a published document.Of course if you have a real business need to keep all those versions around, then you'll want to look into an archiving solution that will take the old versions out of the content database but still make them available if necessary.

It's called What It Takes to Deploy and Manage a Private Cloud with Oracle VM. The paper is filled with useful information and it's written in a really entertaining style, tackling the IT challenges of a friendly systems administrator named Dave. It gives a great overview of application-driven virtualization and covers Oracle VM, Oracle VM Templates, Oracle VM Storage Connect, and Oracle Enterprise Manager. • Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

  A new release of the Sun Rack II capacity calculator is available on eSTEP portal. The tool calculates all the data necessary (power requirements, BTU, number of rack units, needed power outlets etc.) while inserting the many different kind of HW equipment in aSun Rack II cabinet (version 1000 and 1200). It takes into consideration most of the available servers, storage devices, tapes, and Netra products. There are also a couple of third party products which are taken into account. • Grub can't find device on boot resulting in Grub Rescue

  So I have 2 hard drives a HDD 320GB and a SSD 20GB. Before I had Windows 7 on the HDD and Ubuntu on the SSD but wanted to get rid of windows and reinstall a clean Ubuntu on the SSD then use the HDD for storage. So I deleted everything from the HDD and set up the SSD with 18GB ext4 and 2GB Swap and installed Ubuntu on the 18GB ext4. Though now when I boot up I get "Error: No such device Grub Rescue" I have a live USB and I ran the Boot Repair following these instructions - grub rescue after install of Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot) - it says successful though still have the same problem. • copy files to Nexus 4 on Kubuntu (13.04)

  I know, this has been asked a few times already but I'm still having troubles to get files copied my new Nexus 4 phone mounted on my Kubuntu 13.04 machine. I followed the guide at: http://www.pocketables.com/2013/03/how-to-mount-the-lg-nexus-4-as-a-usb-drive-in-linux.html I would only get: $ cp -r /mnt/media/Albums/A\ Perfect\ Circle\ -\ Thirteenth\ Step/ . cp: accessing ‘.’: Transport endpoint is not connected reg@regDesktopHome:/media/nexus4/Internal storage/Music$ ls -l but thereafter , mount still shows it mounted: mtpfs on /media/nexus4 type fuse.mtpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other) What's going on here? • Coherence Query Performance in Large Clusters

  Large clusters (measured in terms of the number of storage-enabled members participating in the largest cache services) may introduce challenges when issuing queries. There is no particular cluster size threshold for this, rather a gradually increasing tendency for issues to arise. The most obvious challenges are that a client's perceived query latency will be determined by the slowest responder (more likely to be a factor in larger clusters) as well as the fact that adding additional cache servers will not increase query throughput if the query processing is not compute-bound (which would generally be the case for most indexed queries). If the data set can take advantage of the partition affinity features of Coherence, then the application can use a PartitionedFilter to target a query to a single server (using partition affinity to ensure that all data is in a single partition). If this can not be done, then avoiding an excessive number of cache server JVMs will help, as will ensuring that each cache server has sufficient CPU resources available and is also properly configured to minimize GC pauses (the most common cause of a slow-responding cache server).
