  I have updated yesterday to Ubuntu 12.04 but can not access the Internet. It is an old PC without wireless. But the older Ubuntu I had installed up until now (11.??) worked perfectly. I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu, and I have been trying Google for some time know, but I cannot find the answer. I noticed that running nm-tool resulted in some things that don't sound right: Type: wired Driver: ne2k-pci state: unavailable Default: no Carrier: off Does anyone have a way to fix the connection?

• Why do software patches have to be accepted by a developer?

  In open source projects, why do software patches have to be accepted by a developer? Couldn't contributors just release their own patches and allow people to add the patch if they choose to. I'm wondering why there are so many Ubuntu programs that could use such obvious work but aren't updated. For instance, lots of people want Rhythmbox to be more attractive. Why can't the people who design themes on DeviantArt turn those into code and let users download those themes themselves, even if the developers at Rhythmbox won't accept different themes?

• How to perform efficient 2D picking in HTML5?

  I'm currently using an R-Tree for both picking and collision testing. Each entity on screen has a bounding box for collisions and a separate one for picking. Since entities may change position very frequently, both trees must be updated/reordered once per frame. While this is very efficient for collisions, because the tree is used in hundreds of collision queries every frame, I'm finding it too costly for picking, because it only gets queried when the user clicks, thus leading to a lot of wasted tree updates. What would be a more efficient way to implement picking without as much overhead?

• Game Patching Mac/PC

  Just wondering what types of solutions are available to handle patching of PC/Mac games that don't have any sort of auto updater built into them. In windows do you just spin off some sort of new install shield for the game that includes the updated files, hope you can read a valid registry key to point to the right directory, and overwrite files? If so how does that translate over to Mac where the game is normally just distributed as straight up .app file? Is there a better approach than the above for an already released product? (Assuming direct sells, and not through a marketplace that features auto-updating like Steam.) Are there any off the shelf auto-updater type libraries that could also be easily integrated with a C/C++ code base even after a game has been shipped to make this a lot simpler, and that are cross platform? Also how do auto-updaters work with new OS's that want applications and files digitally signed?

• Is There A Security Risk With Users That Are Also Groups?

  I know a little about users and groups; in the past I might have had a group like 'DBAS' or 'ADMINS' and I'd add individual users to each group... But I was surprised to learn I could add users to other users - as if they were groups. For example if my /etc/group contained the following: user1:x:12501: user2:x:12502:user1 admin:x:123:user2,jim,bob Since user2 is a member of the admin group, and user1 is a member of user2 - is user1 effectively an admin? If the admin group is in the sudoers file, can user1 use it as well? I've tried to simulate this and I haven't been able to do so as user1...but I'm not sure it's impossible. • Recent Ubuntu update prevents MySQL root access

  I recently updated my Ubuntu (10.04 LTS) server (apt-get update, apt-get upgrade), and everything works fine, apart from the root access to my MySQL database. phpMyAdmin, CakePHP, and essentially all connections return similar access errors. For example, PMA returns 'Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.' I have tried to find similar examples of this instance, but cannot find assistance in what configuration I should be changing to restore root log in access. The same issue has occurred on two servers. One has additional users so I could get around it, but the other is a new development server with only root MySQL access, so I am stuck on how to resolve this.

• Regular wireless dropouts on new lenovo T440s in Ubuntu 14.04

  Over the last 24 hours my wireless has dropped out regularly. I've tested to make sure it isn't my router (my phone and everyone in the house isn't having problems using the wifi). This is a brand-new installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and according to uname I'm running kernel 3.13.0-24-generic. Now, my laptop has an Intel 7260AC dual band wireless card and I've read that Ubuntu has been having trouble with these. I notice that at http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034398.htm There are some updated drivers for my kernel version. However I have no idea how to update the kernel to use these drivers instead so that I can see if this will fix it. Can anyone help? These dropouts are really annoying. EDIT: Upgrading to 3.14.6 did not help.

  I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server with LAMP support. Tomcat6 seems to run ok. But, I am unable to get into the manager-webapp...   At this moment, ever since I installed Ubuntu on this machine, the battery status says: not present. Looking at this answer, however, I find that /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info (sometimes its /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info, use tab complete to help) has the following info: present: yes design capacity: 4400 mAh last full capacity: 4400 mAh battery technology: rechargeable design voltage: 11100 mV design capacity warning: 300 mAh design capacity low: 132 mAh cycle count: 0 capacity granularity 1: 32 mAh capacity granularity 2: 32 mAh model number: BAT1 serial number: 11 battery type: 11 OEM info: 11 In accordance to this answer, I've checked the /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state file: present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: charged present rate: unknown remaining capacity: unknown present voltage: 10000 mV The acpi -b command returns: Battery 0: Unknown, 0%, rate information unavailable Any suggestions on getting the battery info updated?

• Cannot boot Win7 after updating to ubuntu 11.10

  I had a dual boot setup on my system, with ubuntu 11.04 and Win7. Yesterday I updated ubuntu to 11.10. Now , I cannot seem to be able to load Win7 , I do see an entry for it on the boot menu. I select that entry and then the screen goes black , with everything coming to a standstill. I tried to wait for it to respond but nothing happened. I went through the forums and tried "grub-update" but when I do that , nothing really happens. I am not sure of this , but I get no output from grub for upto 10 minutes ( can grub-update be made verbose ) How can I fix this and get back to booting both OS'es properly ?

• No Sound in HTML5 and Google Chrome after update to 13.10

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 i have no sound for HTML5 players in Google Chrome Browser. Firefox works. Flash Players are working. No sound on Youtube when using HTML5. No sound on vimeo (They have html5 player as standard). When I open the soundapplication, google doesn't show up when I try to play a html5 video. But it shows up, when playing a Flash Video. Or is it… If like me, you are someone that are running sites using a self-signed SSL Certificate (i.e. when running a site on a developer machine) you may come across the following lovely message; Fear not, this is likely as a result of you following instructions you found on the apache openssl site which results in a self signed cert using the MD5 signature hashing algorithm. Using OpenSSL The simple fix is to generate a new certificate specifying to use the SHA512 signature hashing algorithm, like so; openssl req -new -x509 -sha512 -nodes -out server.crt -keyout server.key Simples! Now, you should be able to confirm the signature algorithm used is sha512 by looking at the details tab of certificate Notes If you change your certificate, be sure to reapply any private key permissions you require – such as allowing access to the application pool user.

This is an updated re-release of the generic Partial Schema Exporter Tool.  The generic patch is for 7.3.1.x and 12.2.x. TABLE_REORG was introduced in 7.3.1.3 12.2.0.  Therefore for 7.3.1.x the schema must be at 7.3.1.3 or above. This is build 3 of the patch. It contains fixes for the following bugs - BUG 17495971 - DEMANTRA 12.2 - CUMULATIVE HISTORY NOT CORRECT   It now only uses DATA_PUMP COMPRESSION only on Enterprise Edition for 11g and and up. - Bug 17452153 - 1OFF:16086475:TRYING TO FILTER DROP DOWN IN A METHOD CALL USING MORE THAN 1 ATTR   It now builds GL level filters with and without the GL id column where applicable. • Not mounting/finding 1TB NTFS drive

  I am having trouble with Ubuntu recognizing/finding/mounting one of my hard drives. I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I had Ubuntu 10.04 and all drives showed up under "Places" I could click on any of my Windows/NTFS drives and they would mount as they should. I have since updated to Ubuntu 10.10. One of my drives no longer shows up in "Places" or in Nautilus. I can open gparted and it is listed there, but if I try to click the mount button, I get an error. I am currently at work and can not post any screenshots or errors, but will happily do so later. I was just hoping that someone might be able to give me something to try when I get home. 250gig SATA hard drive (Windows7/NTFS) - recognized/mountable 200gig PATA hard drive (Ubuntu 10.10) - recognized (obviously) 1TB SATA hard drive (NTFS) - not recognized/won't mount Thanks!

• How do Expires headers and cache manifest rules work together?

  I find the W3C's official Offline Web Applications specification to be rather vague about how the cache manifest interacts with headers such as ETag, Expires, or Pragma on cached assets. I know that the manifest should be checked with each request so that the browser knows when to check the other assets for updates. But because the specification doesn't define how the cache manifest interacts with normal cache instructions, I can't predict precisely how the browser will react. Will assets with a future expiration date be refreshed (no matter the cache headers) when the cache manifest is updated? Or, will those assets obey the normal caching rules? Which caching mechanism, HTTP cache versus cache manifest, will take precedence, and when?
