  How do you adjust the subtitles track? I have a video and I downloaded the subtitles from somewhere. It is a few seconds after the video. I mean can you push the track a few seconds forward or pull it backward in either VLC or Windows Media Player?

• NFS server Windows 2008 - mounting via linux - input/output error help.

  I want to try mounting a folder with NFS - I set up the NFS sharing on a windows 2008 R2 server, specified hosts in the NFS permissions (by IP address) and mounted via /etc/fstab it mounts, but when I try to list the folder, I get 'input/output error' the owner/group on the local mount point look weird too? drwx------ 2 4294967294 4294967294 4096 2011-02-10 19:15 data/ I mounted in /etc/fstab as: 10.0.6.55:/share$ /media/data nfs soft,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 What am I doing wrong?

• Not all pages are printed in IE8

  I have created a print.css, which doesn't include anything special, just some blocks are hidden for print media and some are visible. So no css code here. The problem is that when I'm trying to print or check a print preview, some of the pages (2 of 4) are not printed neither previewed. But when I'm changing a scale to smaller number than 100% (80%, 90%) all pages are shown and printed. So does anybody met the same problem - is this just an IE issue?

• Looking for Mini itx board suitable for hooking up to a television.

I would like to find a board with both HDMI and standard RCA hookups that would be powerful enough to play full HD video (if it has an embedded cpu). I came across the VIA VB8003 which seemed to fit my needs but it doesn't seem to be widely available. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

• Does anybody knows a replacement for TorrentSpy?

  Hi, I've used TorrentSpy since 2004 and it does a pretty good job but it is very slow with torrent files that have hundreds or thousands of files. Does anyboy knows a better tool for the same job in XP? If you didn't know it, TorrentSpy show the data contained in a torrent file in a readable way: URL's tracker, number of files, its size, number of complete and incomplete downloaders, etc. Edit: What I want is something that can be used from explorer right-clicking in the torrent file, like MediaInfo does with media files.

  I have a user that I log in with over SFTP to my Ubuntu box. They have permission to write to the home directory of course. The external hard drive gets mounted to /media folder but I can't write to it over SFTP while logged in with that user. How would I set the permissions to allow me to write to the drive?

• Use a RAID Controller without drivers?

  Ordered an Adaptec 1420SA RAID card for my Debian Squeeze media server but didn't check to see if it was compatible, turns out it's not because it uses something called hostRAID which requires special drivers that aren't available for Debian. Could I still use the card as an ordinary controller and just use OS software RAID?? I'm not looking for speed, just need to mirror some drives that will be used for storage, the OS will reside on a disk connected to the server's onboard controller so the system won't be booting from any drives on the Adaptec controller.

• Cannot write DVDs anymore (can still read them and write CDs) STUMPED

  I'm stumped. I used to be able to write to DVDs and now I can't. I've tried different media (Memorex and Imations) I've tried different drives (internal and external) and even different OS's (Windows 7 and Linux Mint). Nothing I've done will work and it's a real problem not being able to burn DVD's. I'm on an Acer 6930 if that helps. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Serving protected files using Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect header

  I'm trying to serve protected files using this directive in my nginx.conf: location /secure/ { internal; alias /home/ldr/webapps/nginx/app/secure/; } I'm passing in paths in the form: "/myfile.doc" and the file's path would be: /home/ldr/webapps/nginx/app/secure/myfile.doc I just get 404's when I access "http: //myserver/secure/myfile.doc" (space inserted after http to stop ServerFault converting it to a link) I've tried taking the trailing / off the location directive and that makes no difference. Two questions: How do I fix it! How can I debug problems like this myself? How can I get Nginx to report which path it's looking for? error.log shows nothing and access.log just tells me which url is being requested - this is the bit I already know! It's no fun trying things randomly without any feedback. I've also tried moving this block before the "location /" directive. The page I linked to has ^~ after 'location' giving: location ^~ /secure/ { ...etc... Not sure what that signifies but it didn't work either!

But in the end I have to concede it is still the best - especially while used on different platforms. One of the small but annoying short-backs is the ugly and universally known orange cone. I would like to have other icons than the same orange cone for all media files.

• Hardware for multipurpose home server

  Hi guys, I'm looking to set up a multipurpose home server and hoped you could help me with the hardware selection. First of all, the services it will provide: Hosting a MySQL database (for training and testing purposes) FTP server Personal Mail Server Home media server So with this in mind I've done some research, and found some viable solutions: A standard PC with the appropriate software (Either second hand or new) A non-solid state mini-ITX system A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system I've also noted the pros and cons of each system: A standard second hand PC with old hardware would be the cheapest option. It could also have lacking processing power, not enough RAM and generally faulty hardware. Also, huge power consumption heat generation and noise levels. A standard new PC would have top-notch hardware and will stay that way for quite some time, so it's a good investment. But again, the main problem is power consumption, heat generation and noise levels. A non-solid state mini-ITX system would have the advantages of lower power consumption, lower cost (as far as I can see) and long lasting hardware. But it will generate noise and heat which will be even worse because of the size. A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system would have all the advantages of a non-solid state mini-ITX but with minimal noise and heat. The main disadvantage is the read\write problems of flash memory. All in all I'm leaning towards a non-solid state mini-ITX because of the read\write issues of flash memory. So, after this overview of what I do know, my questions are: Are all these services even providable from a single server? To my best understanding they are, but then again, I might be wrong. Is any of these solutions viable? If yes, which one is the best for my purposes? If not, what would you suggest? Also, on a more software oriented note: OS wise, I'm planning to run Linux. I'm currently thinking of four options I've been recommended: CentOS, Gentoo, DSL (Damn Small Linux) and LFS (Linux From Scratch). Any thoughts on this? Any other distro you would recomend? Regarding FTP services, I've herd good things about FileZila. Anyone has any experience with that? Do you recommend it? Do you recommend something else? Regarding the Mail service, I know nothing about this except that it exists. Any software you recommend for this task? Home media, same as mail service. Any recommended software?   I had to throw a machine together in a bit of a hurry- to replace a machine that suddenly failed (no one had bothered to keep a "warm" backup) It has Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2008 The snag is, I installed them off our MSDN subscription media, due to me not having "licensed" software. I need to put this machine into production. We are in the process of buying the licenses from a MS reseller now. Is there a way to "convert" the MSDN license to production on both Windows Server and SQL?

• How do I preserve ownership permissions when copying to an external volume?

  When I upgrade or reinstall linux I backup my home folder by running sudo cp -pr /home/users/yitzchak /media/externalHDD/backups. When I do this I get errors saying that permissions could not be preserved and when I copy the folder back onto my local disk I see that ownership has been changed to root and I have to chown all of them back, which has to be done manually piecemeal because not all files have the same group. Is there any way around that?

In the product description it states that the card has 7.1 audio channel support, does this mean it will play the sound from the blu-ray through the HDMI, or do I need a separate sound card?

• How can I run a (16-bit) .COM executable that has been renamed to .COS?

  I'm trying to run a couple of 16-bit legacy DOS programs from a standard windows XP dos prompt. The problem is that the file extensions have been renamed from .COM to .COS and they are stored on read-only media and I can't copy them (special environment). Any tips on how to invoke such files despite the weird extension? If they had been 32-bit EXEs, it wouldn't have been an issue running them even without their proper extensions, but with these COM files, I'm unable to find a way to run them.

• gzip compression good or bad?

  I have a server that currently does a lot of processing in my application and the target users are those who have a very good internet connection. The output that is sent from the server is always text/html and we do not use any media (audio/video) only images (static site images like logo,etc). We are experiencing severe performance issues and I wonder if turning off gzip/mod_deflate on the server so that the server would avoid compressing the output. Will this cause an improvement in performance?

• Automount vfat (w95 fat32 LBA) on Centos

  I'm trying to mount an USB flash drive formatted as w95 fat32 LBA (as reported by dmesg) under Centos. I can easily mount it using the mount command: mount /dev/sdx1 /media/mydrive -t vfat But it seems that the system (Centos 6.3) cannot mount it automatically. It mounts all the other filesystem types automatically. I also installed fuse-ntfs and it correctly mounts NTFS drives. How can I enable automount for vfat partiotions too? Thanks

After a bit of research, it seems the most likely reason is that they are somehow the "wrong format" and iTunes can't get its tiny brain round them.   There are several different free software gallery projects (Gallery, Coppermine, etc), but as far as I know each of those creates a copy of imported images in their internal storage, be it directory structure or database). Is there any gallery software that would allow keeping existing directory hierarchy of media files (images, videos), as-is, and just store the meta-data of them in a database? I guess at least various NAS solutions ship with software like this.
