  • ideas for simple objects for day to day web-dev use?

    Dang-I know this is a subjective question so will probably get booted off/locked, but I'll try anyway, because I don't know where else to ask (feel free to point me to a better place to ask this!) I'm just wrapping my head around oop with PHP, but I'm still not using frameworks or anything. I'd like to create several small simple objects that I could use in my own websites to better get a feel for them. Can anyone recommend a list or a resource that could point me to say 10 day-to-day objects that people would use in basic websites? The reason I'm asking is because I'm confusing myself a bit. For example, I was thinking of a "database connection" object, but then I'm just thinking that is just a function, and not really an "object"?? So the question is: What are some examples of objects used in basic PHP websites (not including "shopping cart" type websites) Thanks!

  • Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

    It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

  • How to show, not download, images in apache?

    I'm dynamically generating some charts using mod_python, in .png and .pdf formats. When a user points to /some/path/some_imagefile_name.png, I want to show the image within the browser, like in this url. I also want the image to be accessible from an HTML <img src=> tag. So far, whenever I point my browser to a .png address from my server, the .png and .pdf are automatically downloaded instead of being viewed. How should I fix this? I tagged this under Apache, since I figured it would be an Apache config thing. If it's not, please point me towards the right direction.

  • Fast ceiling of an integer division in C / C++

    Given integer values x and y, C and C++ returns as the quotient q = x/y the floor of the floating point valued equivalent. I'm interestd in a method of returning the ceiling instead? For example, ceil(10/5) = 2 and ceil(11/5) = 3. The obvious approach involves something like: q = x / y; if (q * y < x) ++q; This requires an extra comparison and multiplication; and other methods I've seen (used in fact) involve casting as a float or double. Is there a more direct method that avoids the additional multiplication (or a second division) and branch, and that also avoids casting as a floating point number?

    Hello, I just started working on a Ruby On Rails project and i got to the point where i need to see the contacts of a company. They should appear once the company is selected.. <%= observe_field :empresa_id, :url={:action = "get_contactos", :controller= :contactos, :updatewith =:empresa_id} % but nothing happens, i don't see even a error on the script/server.   • YAHOO.util.Connect.asyncRequest does not work in Safari

    When I request a webpage using YAHOO.util.Connect.asyncRequest in Safari I always get Communication Failure message in callback's failure properties statusText. The same method works in IE. What could be wrong here? Here is the code. When the code is executed I always get two alerts: "Three" and "communications failure undefined" (corresponding to the second alert in the failure part below.) Also when I attach the debugger and put break point in the SAProvision.aspx's page load event, the break point is not hit. So it is sure that in safari the page is not being called.   • Passing arguments between classes - use public properties or pass a properties class as argument?

    So let's assume I have a class named ABC that will have a list of Point objects. I need to make some drawing logic with them. Each one of those Point objects will have a Draw() method that will be called by the ABC class. The Draw() method code will need info from ABC class. I can only see two ways to make them have this info: Having Abc class make public some properties that would allow draw() to make its decisions. Having Abc class pass to draw() a class full of properties. The properties in both cases would be the same, my question is what is preferred in this case. Maybe the second approach is more flexible? Maybe not? I don't see here a clear winner, but that sure has more to do with my inexperience than any other thing. If there are other good approaches, feel free to share them. Here are both cases: class Abc1 { public property a; public property b; public property c; ... public property z; public void method1(); ... public void methodn(); } and here is approach 2: class Abc2 { //here we make take down all properties public void method1(); ... public void methodn(); } class Abc2MethodArgs { //and we put them here. this class will be passed as argument to //Point's draw() method! public property a; public property b; public property c; ... public property z; } Also, if there are any "formal" names for these two approaches, I'd like to know them so I can better choose the tags/thread name, so it's more useful for searching purposes.     C really isn't my strong point and after reading 3 chapters of a book on the subject and spending ages trying to get stuff working it just doesn't: #include <stdio.h> char *a,*b; int main( ) { char input[10]; fgets(input,sizeof input, stdin); a = input; fgets(input,sizeof input, stdin); b = input; printf("%s : %s",a,b); } I've isolated the problem from my main project. This code is meant to read in two strings and then print them however it seems to be setting a and b to point to input. Sample output from this code when A and B are entered is(don't worry about the \n's i can remove them): A B B : B How do i store the value of input in another variable eg. a or b so that in the above case A B A : B Is output?     Is there a Vim script that periodically tries to compile/interpret the code that I'm working on, and highlights syntax errors? I'd like it to point out that something is wrong between these lines: int a = 42 cout << a << endl; Such a thing would save me loads of time.     Hello everyone, I need to develop an instant messenger (like MSN Messagner, but only simple and basic function is fine), based on .Net (C#). I want to integrate the instant messenger with my current web site user. I want to know any open source (better C#) instant messenger to reference? BTW: some of the users are using internal IP address (behind a gateway or proxy, like 10.10.xxx.xxx) -- so in this scenario two users can not use point to point message transfer if both of them are behind a gateway?   • global applied stylesheet link on debian box

    Hi there, Having some trouble identifying what is wrong with my link to an external CSS stylesheet... I am using a debian box to host some things... including a file i am accessing page.py which is located in /var/www/cgi-bin. I need this page to link to a css file which currently has the pathname /var/www/styles.css. Now I know I could link as: <link rel="stylesheet" href="**../styles.css**" type="text/css"> and the problem is solved but I would rather have a 'global' link, that I can use in other py files elsewhere in my filesystem and they will all point to /var/www/styles.css The information I have searched suggests that <link rel="stylesheet" href="**/var/www/styles.css**" type="text/css"> should work fine... but it doesn't. I have tried multiple combinations of everything I know but it doesn't seem to link as I would expect. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    My goal is to display the same icon twice, but each time in different size. I tried the following: FileStream fs = new FileStream("name_of_the_icon_file.ico", FileMode.Open); Icon ico = new Icon(fs, 32, 32); //create an in-memory instance of the icon, size 32x32 Icon ico2 = new Icon(fs, 16, 16); //create an in-memory instance of the icon, size 16x16 ... Graphics.DrawIcon(ico, /*some point*/); Graphics.DrawIcon(ico2, /*some other point*/); The last line throws an ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range. Can some one explain me whats wrong and whats the way to do this right?

  • How to find foreign-key dependencies pointing to one record in Oracle?

    Hi folks, I have a very large Oracle database, with many many tables and millions of rows. I need to delete one of them, but want to make sure that dropping it will not break any other dependent rows that point to it as a foreign key record. Is there a way to get a list of all the other records, or at least table schemas, that point to this row? I know that I could just try to delete it myself, and catch the exception, but I won't be running the script myself and need it to run clean the first time through. I have the tools SQL Developer from Oracle, and PL/SQL Developer from AllRoundAutomations at my disposal. Thanks in advance!

  • Why Use java.lang.reflect.Array For Anything Other Than Array Creation?

    Java Class java.lang.reflect.Array provides a set of tools for creating an array dynamically. However in addition to that it has a whole set of methods for accessing (get, set, and length) an array. I don't understand the point of this, since you can (and presumably would) cast your dynamically generated array as an array upon creation, which means you can use the normal array access (bracket notation) functionality. In fact, looking at the source code you can see that is all the class does, cast the array, and throw an exception if the cast fails. So what's the point / usefulness of all of these extra methods?

Reading about the 'create workspace' doc on http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/rtc/v1r0m0/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.team.scm.doc%2Ftopics%2Fc_scm_cli.html it does'nt mention how to create a new workspace which contains all of the components of a given stream. So how can I implement point 2 ? Any comments on my methodolgy if can be improved upon also appreciated.

    Hi, In my db, I have a "sales" table and a "sales_item". Sometimes, something goes wrong and the sale is recorded but not the sales item's. So I'm trying to get the salesID from my table "sales" that haven't got any rows in the sales_item table.   • Why are mainframes still around?

    It's a question you've probably asked or been asked several times. What's so great about Mainframes? The answer you've probably been given is "they are fast" "normal computers can't process as many 'transactions' per second as they do". Jeese, I mean it's not like Google is running a bunch of Mainframes and look how many transactions/sec they do! The question here really is "why?". When I ask this question to the mainframe devs I know, they can't answer, they simply restate "It's fast". With the advent of Cloud Computing, I can't imagine mainframes being able to compete both cost-wise and mindshare-wise (aren't all the Cobol devs going to retire at some point, or will offshore just pickup the slack?). And yet, I know a few companies that still pump out net-new Cobol/Mainframe apps, even for things we could do easily in say .NET and Java. Anyone have a real good answer as to why "The Mainframe is faster", or can point me to some good articles relating to the topic?

  • How can you buffer two online videos alternately while playing one of them?

    On my website, I want my user to be able to launch video 2 at any point in the middle of video 1 without waiting or refreshing the window. How can I buffer the two videos such that I buffer video 1 enough to let it start playing, and then buffer just enough of video 2 that if the user launches it at any point, he does not have to wait to view its first few seconds, and then I can come back and buffer the rest of video 1? If this is not possible, I could also look at buffering video 1 and 2 in parallel while playing only video 1. Thanks!

  • How do you submit a rails 3 form without refreshing the page?

    I've seen this done using ajax & php, but not rails 3. I've tried using: <%= form_for(:technician, :url => {:controller => 'pos', :action => 'create_ticket'}, :remote => true) do |f| %> but the page still refreshes each time. I'm building a point of sale program, so I don't want the page to refresh. How do I send the form data to the controller to process and store in the database without refreshing?
