• Slow Inserts SQL Server 2005

  I'm researching an issue with the following information: We had a logging table with about 90k records in it that had inserts taking several seconds(approximately 10 to 20s) in extreme cases. One of the columns of the table stores XML as the XML datatype. The XML isn't being parsed during the insert, just stored. We tried truncating the table assuming that the issue was related the number of records(althought 90k seemed "normal") and the inserts still are performing poorly. While I know there are other issues that can cloud the issue, what would be some "check this first" ideas that could help me debug this issue? Thanks for any suggestions and help in advance.

• IIS6 + PHP + FastCGI 500 Errors - Where to start looking?

  I've set up IIS6 with FastCGI to use php-cgi.exe. I have some php websites by external parties, that I'm trying to run in a test environment. One of the websites just plain gives me a FastCGI Error Page. Question: Is there some way to enable logging somewhere so that I can get a bit more information on this problem? I have looked in Eventlog IIS Website log (c:\windows\system32\Logfiles) PHP log But no results, except the IIS Website log mentions a return of a 500 page. Question: Is there any other way to debug/check where things might be going wrong? Here is what the page looks like: FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. • s3cmd run on command line not on cron

  Many have said that the problem is with environment but I still can't seem to solve this problem. BTW I am using Ubuntu 9.10 login as user, then sudo -s using this command: s3cmd put file s3://bucket worked! now here is the simple script intended for testing: #! /bin/bash env >/tmp/cronjob.log s3cmd put file s3://bucket issuing the command crontab -e * * * * * /opt/script 2>&1 | logger Then using tail to syslogs Dec 3 23:22:01 ubuntu CRON[10795]: (root) CMD (/opt/script 2&1 | logger) But by verifying it on s3Fox Organizer, the file is not uploaded. (I tried changing the #! /bin/sh (no effect), putting crons on /etc/crontab (no effect), setting HOME=/home/user (no effect) What are other options to try? Or other ways to debug this problem.   This is my first time developing Android applications. I'm developing an Android app on Eclipse on Windows 7. I would like to run the Android app from the Windows 7 command line interface. I have my Android device connected to the PC. The workspace directory that I use to store the Android project is C:\Users\Guest\Desktop\Software Applications Development\Java\Android Moblie Applications Projects\Eclipse Indigo for Java EE x64-bit\project workspace I opened the command line interface and I changed the working directory to the Android workspace directory. cd C:\Users\Guest\Desktop\Software Applications Development\Java\Android Moblie Applications Projects\Eclipse Indigo for Java EE x64-bit\project workspace I included Android sdk platform tools directory into the PATH environment variable. c:\Users\admin\Android-sdks\platform-tools Then I entered this into the Windows 7 command line interface: ant debug I have this error message on the cmd: ant is not recognised as an internal or external command, operatable program or batch file. What is the solution to this problem?

• nginx connection reset

  When first visiting my site after not visiting it for a few minutes, the connection is "reset" 100% of the time. I get this message when debug is turned on, along with a 400 bad request status message: client prematurely closed connection while reading client request line I've read that this could be caused by large_client_header_buffers setting. I have google analytics on my site. • What are possible causes of keyboard lag on my desktop machine?

  I am running Windows 7 and began experiencing keyboard lag in most applications, and it seems to be getting worse. Certain websites are the worst - on some, I can type a sentence, take my hands off the keyboard, and watch the characters continue to appear on the screen for several seconds. Others are not as bad, but still noticeable and annoying. I just started noticing it in non-browser applications (e.g. Outlook) as well. I've disabled all extensions in Firefox, rebooted my machine, and that did nothing. There is nothing using much memory or cpu cycles, even when the lag is occurring. This is a machine at work with very strict controls over what can be installed, so the chances of any kind of malware are very slim. I don't believe anything as been installed since before the problem started. What could be causing this, and/or what can I do to debug?

• when connected to vpn, can't access certain things

  my companies vpn is not a standard windows vpn. It uses Juniper Networks and it intalls locally something called "Host Checker" prior to allowing me to connect. I have noticed 2 things that I can't access while on vpn. etrade.com - no idea why this specific website, but I can't get to it, maybe https? use of my magik jack - I'm assuming this is some sort of a port conflict issue. if im on a call when i connect, i lose all reception. if i try to make a call after conected, ic an't even get it to dial. Can anyone tell me how I would even begin to debug this. I expect if I call the help desk they won't be much help, but if I can tell them the specific problems of conflicts, maybe I have a chance of them working with me to get it working.

The scenario is like this: At our university we are offering a course in basic iPhone programming for between 4 to 8 groups of students. We have a few iPads, iPods and iPhones but only two Mac Minis. We want to enable the students to work on XCode in the lab (and from home if possible) without buying 8 Mac Minis. Is this possible to do using a Mac Mini Server? If so how would it work if 2 or more groups want to use XCode simultaneously and to debug their programs on devices simultaneously?

• Why would anacron not be running?

  I have a Ubuntu system that has anacron installed. However I'm pretty sure it's not running. It's not running the commands in /etc/cron.daily to rotate the syslog files (I'm using sysklog, which has its own rotating log method, not using logrotate). The last time the logs were rotated were in October 2009. /var/spool/anacron/cron.daily exists and the contents are 20091015. AFAIR we had a power outage then, and everything rebooted. How can I debug anacron? How can I see why it's not running? My first instinct is to look for /var/log/anacron, but that's not there. How can I fix it to make it run again?

• Aquamacs overrides my custom-set-faces options

  I've just installed Aquamacs on my Mac. I have a .emacs file in my home, which contains all my customizations. Among these, I have a: (custom-set-faces ... ) set of lines, which seems not to be applied automatically. If I select the lines from the .emacs and manually evaluate them, everything works fine. My guess is that these options are overridden in some other place. How can I debug this? Where should I set my custom faces? Thanks guys.

• Windows 7 'All Programs' folders self-close on right-click

  Odd issue on my Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) system. If I click on the Start 'orb' then navigate to 'All Programs', then navigate to any of the folders that appear at the bottom of the list (like Accessories) and left-click, the folder contents expand with no issue. If I right-click, the context menu appears for half-a-second or so, then the popup goes away and the entire start menu dismisses. I'm not sure how to debug this issue - I'm considering using Autoruns to try and disable things hooked into the shell one-by-one. Is there a way to use a tool like Process Explorer to narrow down the process that's actually dismissing the menus?

  Hi, I have a nginx server with 5 backend servers. We serve around 400-500 requests/second. I have started getting a large number of Upstream Timed out errors (110: Connection timed out) Error string in error.log looks like 2011/01/10 21:59:46 [error] 1153#0: *1699246778 upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream, client: {IP}, server: {domain}, request: "GET {URL} HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://{backend_server}:80/{url}", host: "{domain}", referrer: "{referrer}" Any suggestions how to debug such errors. I am unable to find a munin plugin to keep a check on number of upstream errors. Sometime the number of errors per day is way too high and somedays its a more decent 3 digit number. A munin graph would probably help us finding out any pattern or correlation with anything else How can we make the number of such error as ZERO

• Nginx Tornado Combination Causing 502 Bad Gateway Errors

  We are facing a problem with inconsistent 502 errors and tracking down the reasons has been a very frustrating exercise. We can reproduce the problem by sending several simultaneous requests quickly. The problem is that several is only in the range of 10 to 20 within a 5 seconds (not a typo). So clearly this type of load should be handled easily. We really like the Nginx + Tornado approach but are considering going to a more traditional (e.g. threading) approach because this problem has been very difficult to solve. I was wondering if you a) know how to fix this issue and b) how we can tracked down the culprit(s). The log files simply identify there being a connection refused. We have the same problem as this post: How do I debug a HTTP 502 error? But there is no answer provided on how to solve the problem so I'm hoping you can help because this may be a common issue with this type of setup. Thanks in advance, Paul

• How to enable the flash player plugin in IE8?

  I updated to IE8 the other day on my Vista laptop, mostly because Windows Update kept bugging me about it. As a Chrome user, I don't really care so much about IE8, but I do have to use it occaisionally to test website compatibility. At any rate, flash seems to be completely deactivated, and I don't see a place to re-enable it anywhere in the preferences. I've done a bit of googling on the issue, but only found information about how to disable flash, not how to actually enable it. I have the flash 10 debug player installed, and it works fine with Chrome and Firefox. What could be the matter?

• What happens when router has been set to incorrect time?

  I have a D-Link router for my home Wi-Fi network. Everyday at least once the internet suddenly goes down. I am simply not able to connect to the Wi-Fi network. If I just restart the router, it starts working. To debug the issue I logged into the admin panel and noticed the time was set to something in 2002. I have set it to the correct time. Will wait to see if that fixes the problem. In the meanwhile I want to know what can go bad when the router has been set to show an incorrect time? What are the kinds of problems expected? My Wi-Fi was working just fine most of the time, but sometimes it lost the connection. Could this be linked to the incorrect time setting?

• Complex nagios command

  I have defined the following command for one of my service checks: define command{ command_name mycommand command_line $USER1$/check_by_ssh -p $ARG1$ -l nagios -i /etc/nagios2/keys/key1 -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -v -C 'source $USER10$ ; command.py -a get --alert-name $ARG2$ -q' } The problem is that it seems that nagios is parsing the command with the semicolon, and producing garbage which can not be executed. I have tried also putting a backslash \;, to no avail. If I run the command directly on the shell, it works. Which means that this is not a problem with check_by_ssh, but a problem on the parsing of the nagios configuration file. How can I debug this? Is there a way to get a listing of all the commands that nagios has parsed when reading the configuration files?

  Hi, There is a frequent occurence of FULL GC in our system. We are using Java application running on Tomcat server. Our application is running using internal load balancer setup. We are seeing lot of Full GC's in the server logs due to which the application is hung and Proxy errors are occured. The Java parameter values we are using are: Webapp wrapper: wrapper.java.additional.4=-Xms382M wrapper.java.additional.5=-Xmx1024M Backapp wrapper: wrapper.java.additional.4=-Xms382M wrapper.java.additional.5=-Xmx1024M The error found in webapp wrapper logs: INFO | jvm 1 | 2010/11/26 09:33:19 | [PSYoungGen: 1398460K-140291K(1514624K)] 4623364K-3491394K(5009920K), 0.7285303 secs] [Times: user=1.42 sys=0.00, real=0.72 secs] INFO | jvm 1 | 2010/11/26 09:33:19 | 68539.126: [Full GC DEBUG | wrapperp | 2010/11/26 09:33:19 | send a packet PING : ping Tried to change the JVM values to increase the heap size. But of no use. I suspect that there could be some other reason other than these parameters which is causing the issue. Can anyone please help me on this?

• Map localhost to IP address on Windows XP & Internet Explorer 7+?

  I'm trying to map 'localhost' to an IP address elsewhere on the network, say '10.0.1.1' for example. I've tried editing my hosts file, changing the entry from: 127.0.0.1 localhost to 10.0.1.1 localhost with no luck. The closest I've gotten is using DNS spoofing via Charles. Adding a DNS spoof entry mapping the host name 'localhost' to '10.0.1.1' works fine in Firefox, but fails in Internet Explorer, basically showing IE's 404 page. I'm wondering if there's some specific setting or way I can get DNS spoofing to work in IE? The main issue I'm trying to resolve is that our development environment points to 'localhost' and rather than setting the dev env up in a legacy Windows laptop to try and debug, point to a server that has it all setup and I can make the changes remotely.

• Unkillable process problem

  I closed application, but the process remained in the list. I try to stop in from the task manager, but nothing happens. No error messages, process just stays in the list. I try to debug it, but the debugger says: Unable to attach to the crashing process. The requested operation is not supported. This happens with VS2008 and some other programs, sometimes. What? The? Hell? How to kill it?
