  • How to set up "vi" shell environment as default

    It could by silly question, but I can not find answer anywhere. So, I'd like to use vi (you know set -o vi can do the trick) as default in my shell instead of emacs, but I do not want to put it into bash startup scripts. Why? Because I work as verification engineer and I am using several user accounts, which are also quite often reinstalled. Changing of default profile is not answer too, because some of software creates its own home directory (independent on default profile).

  • Linux: shortname stuck as "localhost" even though full hostname is correct

    I have a linux (CentOS 5.2) server with the name myserver.mycompnay.com, which is correctly returned when I run 'hostname'. When I run 'hostname -s' however it returns "localhost" which is causing some backup scripts to put stuff in a "localhost" directory instead of a "myserver" directory. All of our other CentOS boxes correctly return the first part of their hostname when 'hostname -s', where do I go on this server to make it behave the same? Other than having "HOSTNAME=myserver.mycompnay.com" in /etc/sysconfig/network what should I be looking at?

    Here are the specs to put things into context: ECS P4M800PRO-M478 (V1.0) Intel P4 "Northwood" 2.8C GHz (HT) Socket 478 2x 512 MB PC2-4200 DDR2-533 RAM Visiontek Radeon HD 3650 512 MB DDR2 AGP Maxtor 120 GB SATA HDD The Best Power 500 W ATX PSU Anyways, it's not booting Windows XP SP3 properly. Specifically, there is a sound when it fails to boot and the computer automatically restarts. You can listen to the sound here. What could be the problem?

  • DVD ROM is not working

    (note: I don't know in which StackExchange site to put this question, I'll thank the moderator that will move it to a more appropriate place, if there is a S.E. available for my question). I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. I burned it on an other computer but when I try to run it in bios, nothing is done and I'm redirected to Grub of my HD.     I have my own VPS, on which I want to run a simple SVN + chiliproject setup. I have re-installed SVN, CHILI and the OS several times, and it always works for a couple of hours/days and then it just stops working. Well, everything works, except I can't upload any files. Committing directories seems to work just fine, but when I try to commit a file it breaks. The odd thing is that files won't get added, but directories are fine. I also have enough storage left on my machine. What I should note, perhaps, is that I use Ubuntu 12.04.3 with ruby 1.9.3, mysql 14.14 and I have it set up that Chiliproject handles the authentication and authorization for the project. It works, because I can commit directories and read it all correctly, though I can't upload files. Help would really be appreciated, as I don't know what on earth is going on with this 'truncated http response body'. I tried to read them with wireshark, but it basically gave me the same information. With regards, Ps. I have no clue what the delay between put and delete is, as it's a file of a mere 500 bytes, so it's uploaded in approximately a second. Pps. I copied this question from StackOverflow to this site, as I didn't know the existence of this site and another user suggested that I'd get more answers here, as it's basically a server fault.

  • Processor with higher FSB than motherboard can support.

    Hi all, Please redirect me if there is a similar question, but I have an ECS P4VXASD2+ (V5.0) motherboard, which supports a 533 MHz FSB. I want to put in a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz processor (Socket 478) with an FSB of 800 MHz. Would this be possible? Would the FSB of the processor just be limited to 533 MHz? Thanks in advance.

  • Is a dedicated server similar in setup to a VPS?

    I was thinking about getting a dedicated server (I may need the extra power that a VPS can't provide) from The Planet but I don't know to much about how you would operate one. I have experience in setting up multiple VPS's on Linode and Slicehost, I just select my OS in their CP and connect via SSH in putty and do my thing. Is it the same with dedicated servers (just chose you OS from the CP and connect via SSH and put on whatever crap you want)?

  • What are these folders in the root of my drive?

    The following folders keep showing up: C:\Default\ C:\NativeImages\ They both have a ton of folders in them witha bunch of html files in each folder. I'm assuming this has something to do with NGEN because of the NativeImages folder. How do I get rid of these folders and keep them from coming back? Or otherwise move them so they get put somewhere else? Thanks

  • Could not evaluate: certificate verify failed while using ssl proxy

    One of our machines was recently put behind an SSL proxy and since then I can't connect to puppet with "Could not evaluate: certificate verify failed." I have checked that the dates match, regenerated the certificates but to no avail. Debugging the verification with "openssl s_client -showcerts -connect puppetmaster:puppetmasterport" shows "Verify return code: 0 (ok)" Initially the Proxy SSL Certificate was not recognized with a "Verify return code: 20 (unable to get local issuer certificate)" problem which was then fixed with the answer in the question: Adding root certificate to CentOS 5

    I have MySQL running on a 32-bit RHEL box. The server itself has 4GB total memory with 2GB allocated to MySQL. I would like to know the max amount of memory I can put in the box and how much of that I can allocate to MySQL. I have heard both 2GB and 4GB as the per-process-limit on a 32-bit OS... Ultimately I'd like to know if I can increase the memory for MySQL without upgrading to a 64-bit OS.

I can't put the definitions into .profile or similar because the users I log in as are often shared with others who use the same systems and I don't have control of this.   • Windows 8 Fails to resume from sleep

    I have this weird issue. When I put the computer to sleep by pressing the power button, or using the sleep option in Charms, I can wake it up normally. However, if I close the lid, and later reopen it, all the fans come on, but nothing appears on the screen. I didn't have this issue using Windows 7.
